Be strong...take your stand...stand your ground...stand firm – Ephesians 6:10-14

We are in a battle When we talk about the Christian life, we can often think of a life of loving community, of grace and forgiveness and of proclaiming the good news to our friends about God who loved the world and a Saviour who died for us. While all this is true, there is a danger that we lose sight of the fact that we are born into a battle, and there is an enemy who is out to defeat us. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy John 10:10a 8

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

1. What signs do you see in the world around you that we are born into a battle? What experiences have you had that suggest that there is an enemy who wants to defeat you?

Often the problem is not that Christians don’t fight. They just fight about the wrong things. 2. What are some of the things that Christians often fight about in Christian life and church life? What are some of the battles that Christians should be fighting?

Righteousness One of the descriptions for our enemy is ‘the accuser’ Often one of the greatest attacks which needs to be resisted is accusation and condemnation. Sometimes we have fallen and need to get up and sometimes we’re simply at a point not feeling strong or capable. Either way, the enemy would love to keep us paralyzed at that point, unable to continue. ... though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again Prov 24:16 6. What accusations does the enemy use to keep us from continuing in God’s plans?

Readiness 3. Read 1 Peter 5:6-10. What things can often distract us and prevent us from being ready? What can we do to maintain a state of readiness?

7. Read Romans 3:21 and 2 Cor 5:21. What does it mean for ‘righteousness to be something I am, not something I do’. How are we made righteous?

Resistance If we belong to God and are living to serve God’s plans then we can be sure that his enemy will be against us and try to hinder God’s plans in us. We need to fight to advance God’s purpose and every attack of the enemy that is encountered needs to be resisted.

Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground. – Ephesians 6:13

4. What sort of weapons does the enemy use to try and hinder us? What things do we need to resist? Practically, how do we do this?

5. Read Ephesians 6:10-20. What is our armour, and what does it mean in practice when it comes to resisting the enemy?
