How to Improve Your Concentration

Do you find yourself unable to get things done? Does your mind wander off to somewhere else despite your best efforts to concentrate? If you are then you’re probably having problems in concentrating and maintaining focus. Focus and concentration is very vital in getting things done. Your performance and productivity depends on the amount of focus you can give on a certain task. Without it, you’ll certainly find yourself in a very frustrating and stressful situation. In this article, I’ll show you how to improve your concentration and resist distraction using the F.O.C.U.S. technique.
F = Five More Rule. The five more rule works by pushing you to work past of what you think is your limit. Or simply working through frustration. Just like athletes who want to improve their stamina and last longer, they make it a habit to do five more. Five more rounds, five more push-ups, five more minutes. Pushing yourself to do more will increase your mental stamina which in turn helps you to concentrate more.
O = One Thought At a Time. Make your mind an offer it cannot refuse. When encountering a distraction, make a deal with your mind or bribe it so it will not think of it while doing something of priority. For example, “I will respond to those emails after I’m done with this report so I can do it easier by batch. Right now I will spend the next 30min on this report.” It’s like making a mental to-do list to help you prioritize things and stop thinking of things that doesn’t require your immediate attention.
C = Conquer Procrastination. Procrastination is probably one of the most common enemies of concentration. Putting off things to a later time will not only make it difficult to accomplish things but it will also make room for more distractions and cause further delay. Conquer procrastination by simply doing what you need to do right away.
U = Use Your Hands as Blinders. Your eyes have a wide-angle focus which takes in a lot of information to your brain and some of the information is pretty much useless to the task you’re currently doing. Avoid visual distractions by cupping your hands around your eyes to have a tunnel vision of what you are focusing on like a page in a book or articles on a website. You know what they say, “Out of sight, out of mind.”
S = See It Like It’s the First or Last Time. Our mind is constantly on a rush especially when we are lacking concentration. It shifts from one thought into another without you having to do anything. When it happens the mind tends to take things for granted and will not pay attention to things that actually matter and take us away from the now. If that’s the case, try to see things as if it was your first or last time. It will open your mind further but with added focus because it felt new or something you will never see again. This will stop you from being absent-minded and will make you appreciate being present in life.
