Evaluation For my preliminary film, I had to make a short 2 minute film which involves 2 people sitting at a table and having a conversation. My original idea was for my film was a guy who has an important job interview, but he’s very nervous about interviews so he panics and doesn’t know what to do. He goes to meet his friend who gives him ‘drugs’ to take help him go through to his interview. However it doesn’t all go to plan as the drugs got him hyper & during the interview he was just going on and on and on without knowing what he’s saying. I got this idea after watching a clip from ‘Transpotting’ where a character called Spud goes to an interview & uses drugs to help him. I also watched some other schools Media project to give me some ideas on what my film would be about. The genre of my film is comedy. In my preliminary I wanted to show the different camera shots and angles and movements to make my film look professional and something that has taken time and effort. As well as
including different camera shots angles and movements, I had to include sound effects whether digetic or non-‐digetic. One of the challenges I faced when making my short film was finding a location. This was very hard because I needed to find a room with all the equipment and layout that would well with my film. Another problem I faced was writing my script dialogue and the background noises when I was filming. This was a problem because when I was filming in my sixth form building, there were a lot of people in the room which cause a lot of background noise, and I got rid of this when I was editing my lowering down the sound.
When filming i used equipment’s such as a tripod to help me have a stable shoot of my scenes. I used a tripod to film throughout because I needed to have a steady shoot of my film. During my film the main cast was me. I had to make sure I was wearing the right clothes when I arrived to film. I had to make sure I had a trial run-‐through before actually shooting the film. This was to make sure I knew all my lines and knew how to act in the scenes. Originally, I wanted to film out of school; so find an office and shoot there. However, I changed my mind and decided to film in the sixth form building it had a good enough offices and rooms that would work well with my film. Also, it would be easier for me every time im ready to film since I have everything here. For me to create a shooting script, I had to create a storyboard. In my storyboard, I stated various camera shots and the purpose of them as well as drawing the scene out in order so I refer to it when filming. After my storyboard was done, I then moved on to my shooting script, which has to include different camera shots angles and movements and any other information needed such as costumes or props etc. Every time I went out to film, I had to shoot different scenes, which needed to be in different camera shots, angles, which involved me in doing many retakes of each scene. In doing this, I could select the angles that looks better or suits well when I then move on to editing. When I was filming, I had to make sure I’m revisiting the whole purpose of the film. This was to grab the audience’s attention from the start and also with the intent of comedy included.
The mise-‐en-‐scene included in my short film showed the audiences that it was a modern film. This is because of the building where the film was very modern; also the equipment & props used are also very modern which showed the audience that modern technology was used when making the film. I chose to make a short film like this because it’s something that happens frequently in real life. Also, I wanted to make it clear what drugs can do to you as a consequence. Overall, I enjoyed making my preliminary film because I got to have an experience in filming. This allowed me to explore the various stages of making a film. Although there were challenges, I overcame them and came through in the end. I also enjoyed making my preliminary film because I got to work with other people. This was good because I learnt some good communication skills, and it also enabled me to work as a team. If I was to make the same film again, there are some few changes I would make. For example, I would avoid looking straight at the camera as I did this in my film; although I didn’t do this on purpose. I would also make sure that when im filming, I keep the camera on the tripod very stable and steady. Finally, I am very proud of my preliminary film, and it was definitely a good experience. Although it wasn’t perfect, I am proud to say that I made it.
