TourisT Traps

Like every other city in the world, there are certain things which visitors must look out for, and also certain things that prove to be very annoying. Check out the text below: Exchanging Money - Never exchange money from people on the streets. These people are constantly trying to con travellers with outrageous rates and counterfeit money. Also be careful when changing your money in exchange offices and find out exactly how much you are getting before you pass your money over. Some can be rip-offs. We thoroughly recommend that you use the Alfa Exchange Office and you can see more details about their service on the next page. Taxis – Some taxis have a terrible reputation for ripping people off. Don’t go 6

post The Main Post Office is located at Jindřišká 14, Prague 1 and is open every day from 02.00-24.00.Web: Tipping The general consensus, and indeed it has also been our strategy since we have been here is to leave a 10% tip. Emergency free phone numbers 150 - Fire Department 155 - Medical Emergency 156 - City Police 158 - Police Operators speak mostly Czech, so better to ask someone to explain your problem instead of you talking to them directly. pharmacy A pharmacy, which is available around the clock, can be found by calling: +420 224 946 982. Address: Palackého 720/5, Praha 1. with private cabs. To be safe, go with the AAA cabs. (+420 222 333 222). They are a reputable company and have ranks in most of the main tourist areas. pickpocketing: This is one of Prague's most common crimes. Don't underestimate Prague pickpockets and don't think you can outsmart them. Many of them are highly skilled "professionals". Never leave your wallet lying free on a table or anywhere else. Best to keep it in a closed pocket. over-priced bills: Some places view foreign customers as easy prey for a rip-off. They may add a 20% commission on your bill for no reason at all, or can also add a service charge which they invent themselves and it can be as high as 40%. Always check your bill and ask if you have a question about it. In association with:

Make Your Money Go Further

One of the biggest concerns for visitors to Prague is how and where to change their money and these concerns are justified, as there are many exchange offices which are nothing short of being rip-off merchants. Thankfully, there is also an exchange office which offers fairness, good value and reliability. Alfa Prague is without doubt the city’s best exchange office and we urge all readers of this magazine to change their money with Alfa. Their offices are located on Na Příkopě Street 23 (inside the Panska Passage between T-Mobile and Salamander) and they have a second office which can be found outside Palladium Shopping Center.

Buildings, Monuments & structures The bridge is 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas. They depict various saints and patron saints venerated at that time.

St. Nicholas Church

Astronomical Clock Old Town Square The Prague Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square and is a popular tourist attraction. The Clock is made up of of three main components: the astronomical dial; "The Walk of the Apostles"( a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures); and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. The oldest part of the Clock, dates back to 1410. The four figures flanking the clock are set in motion every hour and are usually greeted by hundreds of camera-armed tourists. The figures represent four things that were despised at the time of the clock's making – among them vanity, greed and death.

Charles Bridge The Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a famous, historic and beautiful bridge that crosses the Vltava River. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. 14

Old Town Square - Malostranské náměstí 1/16, Prague 1 Tel.: +420 221 714 444 The Beautiful St. Nicholas Church at the Old Town Square is one of the most important High Baroque building in Prague. It was completed in 1735 and replaced a parish church, mentioned in records dating back as early as 1273. The bell Tower is around 65 metres high and is accessible to the public. This bell tower was also the last ‘warning tower’ in Prague and was used to warn people of fire. During Communist times, the tower was used as an observation point by the Secret Service. It is a stunning sight on a sunny day or when it is illuminted at night.

Vyšehrad Castle V Pevnosti 5b Vyšehrad, Prague 2. Tel.: +420 241 410 348 Vyšehrad Castle is Prague's second castle and sits perched high above the Vltava River and is the home of legend and myth. It was here that Princess Libuse, the wise daughter of a local ruler foresaw the future of Prague, as a great city. It is commonly known as the birthplace of Prague and was built in the 10th century. Situated within the castle is the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, as well as the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous people from Czech history. Some of the original statues of Charles Bridge are also kept there. The easiest way to get here is to take the Prague metro (C line) to Vyšehrad station and follow the signs. In association with:

Inventive, Vibrant & Entertaining Life is Life Black Light Production By Carlo Divito You know the feeling you get after watching David Copperfield, David Blaine or Yuri Geller? That’s the feeling I experienced after watching the ultra-impressive Life is Life Black Light production which is hosted by Divaldo Metro at Národní třída 25 (Prague 1). It truly was one of those moments when you think to yourself “how can that be possible?”, but unlike the afore mentioned world famous illusionists, the cast of Life Is Life actually let you in on the secret. When the show concludes, they explain all the tricks of their trade during an impressive workshop. Indeed, they are the only Black Light Theatre group in Prague which reveals these secrets......and we are not telling! The entire evening of mystery and intrigue was excellently complimented by quality lighting, energetic dance routines and a great choice of music, while the audience participation added humour to a highly-entertaining creation. The performance connects several

principles of black theatre into one non-verbal performance. It is a mixture of basic threedimensional black theatre, comedy and pantomime. Black Light Theatre, or simply Black Theatre, is a performance style characterised by the use of black box theatre augmented by black light illusion. It originated in Asia and can be found in many places around the world. It has become a speciality of Prague, where many theatres use it. However, quantity does not equal quality and many of the productions tend to be disappointing. That sentiment can not be shared when talking about Life Is Life, because this truly was the finest of all the Black Light productions we have witnessed in Prague. It is highly recommended for people of all ages. The show takes place almost every day. Check their website at for more details. Show duration is 80 minutes without interval. The theatre can be found on Národní třída in Prague City Centre. See our map for more details about location.

Prague Ink Dlouha 18, Prague 1. Tel.: +420 721 991 565. There’s just something about going on a trip abroad and returning home with a new tattoo. We hear the story so many times, and if extra body –art is something you want from your

AttrActions high steel framework tower which strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower. It was built in 1891. Today it is a major tourist attraction. If you go up the hard way, the hill is roughly a half-hour walk. However, the hill is served by a frequent funicular (cable car) and the tower has an elevator for disabled persons. On clear days, the tower offers a good view of the Prague skyline. It is open from 10am to 7-10pm every day from April to October.

Lennon Wall Velkopřevorské náměstí, Malá Strana. Once a normal wall, The Lennon Wall has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles songs since the 80s and is now a popular tourist attraction. In 1988, the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime. The wall continuously undergoes change and the original portrait of Lennon is long lost under layers of new paint.

National Museum Wenceslas Square 1700/68, Prague 1. Tel.: +420 224 497 111 The National museum (Czech: Národní muzeum) is an institution intended to systematically establish, prepare and publicly exhibit natural scientific and historical collections. Located in the grounds of Prague Castle Saint Vitus' Cathedral (Czech: Katedrála svatého Víta) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors, this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country. Perhaps the most outstanding place in the cathedral is the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, where the relics of the saint are kept. The room was built by Peter Parler between 1344 and 1364 and has a ribbed vault. The lower part of the walls are wonderfully decorated with over 1300 semi-precious stones and paintings about the Passion of Christ dating from the original decoration of the chapel in 1372-1373. The Bohemian Coronation Jewels are also kept here.

Food For Thought

raditional Czech food is not exactly what one would call healthy or dietary, however it goes perfectly with Czech beer and there some really delicious dishes. The cuisine has been influenced by the cuisines of surrounding countries, and is marked by a strong emphasis on meat dishes. Pork is probably the most popular meat, while beef and chicken are also common. Goose, duck, rabbit and wild game are also served in several restaurants. Fish isn’t so popular with the locals, with the exception of fresh trout and carp, which is traditionally served at Christmas. As a side-dish, boiled and sliced dumplings are one of the mainstays of Czech cuisine and are quite often served with meals. Among the most popular Czech dishes are: Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut (pečené vepřové s knedlíky a se zelím); 20

Marinated beef sirloin (svíčková na smetaně) which comrpises of pickled roast beef, served with a cream topping and a teaspoon of cranberry compote; traditional beef goulash, even though it basically belongs to traditional Hungarian cuisine. There are countless traditional Czech restaurants in Prague and many of them are ran and sponsored by some of the large beer breweries. Some are excellent and some only average. Visitors should also keep an eye out for the lunch specials (normally served between 12 and 3pm) provided by such restaurants as they tend to be much cheaper. If the Czech dishes don’t tickle your fancy, there is no need to worry, because Prague boasts some top quality international restaurants, some of which have been featured in the pages which follow. Every restaurant featured has been visited by us at least twice to ensure you get reliable information. In association with:

Prague Airport To Be Renamed In Honour Of Havel

rague/Ruzyne International Airport will be renamed ‘Vaclav Havel Airport’, with the formal name change scheduled for October 5th, the date of the former Czech President’s birthday. The airport is currently making preparations for the renaming, including modifying the airport logo and readying changes to the markings on buildings, press materials, reports etc. The Czech Republic was in mourning following Havel’s passing last December. He was a much loved global figure and within hours his death was met with numerous tributes, including from U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa. Havel was a Czech playwright, essayist, poet, dissident and politician. He was the ninth and last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic. He was voted 4th in Prospect magazine's 2005 global poll of the world's top 100 intellectuals. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation. He was the founder of the 34

VIZE 97 Foundation and the principal organizer of the Forum 2000 annual global conference. Havel was one of the signatories of the Charter 77 manifesto, a founding signatory of the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism and a council member of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. Havel received many recognitions, including the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Gandhi Peace Prize, the Philadelphia Liberty Medal, the Order of Canada, the freedom medal of the Four Freedoms Award, and the Ambassador of Conscience Award. It is fitting that Prague’s International Airport should be called after him.

Health & Wellness

ith so much to see and do, and so many routes to walk, Prague is a city that can be draining both physically and mentally, so its fitting that the Czech capital has an excellent health and wellness scene. You will no doubt notice the huge number of Massage parlours in the city centre. Quantity does not always equal quality and we are happy to reccomend the Nam Jai Massage salon for those who are in need of losing their aches and pains or hold a need to feel relaxed. The city also offers various health spas where guests can comfort themselves with jacuzzi-whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas and various other devices. The city and indeed the country is also famed for its professional but extremely cheap dental services, and countless English-speaking 38

dentists can be found online. The ladies may also be interested in manicures and pedicures and once again, the standard in Prague is at a high level, and the prices are most likely cheaper than what you would find at home. The same can be said for hair-dressers. If total relaxation is what you are after, then a trip outside Prague may be what you need, because the country is renowned for its natural spring wells and healing waters. The most famous of these places outside the capital is Karlova Vary which lies in West Bohemia at the confluence of the Teplå River and the Ohře River. It boasts centuries-proven thermal baths and drinking cures as well as modern methods of cryotherapy, floating, laser therapy, etc. In association with:

Step 3: Claiming your refund. Ways of claiming your refund vary from company to company, but most tax free companies suggest that you post your stamped form to them and you should subsequently receive a refund direct to your credit card or bank account. There is also the possibility of presenting your stamped form to a tax free company’s cash refund location (normally anywhere in the world) for an instant cash refund. The questions is often asked: what goods are eligible for a tax refund scheme and the simplest way to answer this is by stating that the tax free schemes can be used for any taxable goods that are exported for personal use. Calculating your refund is quite simple. The VAT rate in Czech Republic is 20%, so if a dress is displayed at €100, including VAT, then the VAT amounts to €16.50. (Dress price: €83.5 + 20% VAT = €100.) The refund amount will thus be €16.50, minus a small handling fee.

f there is another city in Europe with more passageways and alleys which lead to hidden treasures, then we have yet to find it. Time and again, Prague’s narrow cobbled walkways can lead to surprising areas of beauty. One such example is the area known as Ungelt (Týn Courtyard) which can be found directly behind the famous Týn Church, and is a district of the city which is definitely worth visiting, whether it be for a simple stroll, a relaxing afternoon beverage, a memorable dinner, or a night on the town. Archaeological discoveries suggest the area was founded in the 12th century and at that time, it was separated from the surrounding town by a trench. Back then, it was also a place where European and Asian merchants paid taxes on the goods they brought into Prague. They would meet at Ungelt, store their goods and relax. The goods brought by these merchants were declared as ‘Um Geld’ and this led to the 46

current name of Ungelt, which is also the German word for ‘customs’. There was also a time when it was known as ‘The Cheerful Courtyard’, a name adopted because of the cheerful and lively atmosphere which could be enjoyed in the area, as the merchants used to drink and be merry while telling stories of their current and past adventures. At that time, Ungelt hosted a large storehouse, horse stables, merchant houses, a hospital and The Church Of The Virgin Mary, the Church which stood where Týn Cathedral now stands. Ungelt flourished even more in the 14th century era of Charles IV and Wenceslas IV, but in the centuries which followed, Prague’s customs system lost its importance, Ungelt declined and became a complex of dilapidated buildings where poor citizens dwelled. Thankfully, it was later restored and reopened in 1996, and is now one of the most beautiful and entertaining districts in Prague. In the pages which follow, we look at some of our favourite places in the area. In association with:

Answer.: The service.....just ask any of the city’s expats! Cafes & Bars

The City’s Best Cafes & Bars

s there another country in the world which is more fond of beer ? If there is, we have yet to visit it! Beer to the Czechs is like milk to a baby – They simply love it, and the country boasts the highest beer consumption per capita in the world This love affair has its advantages for tourists to Prague, because visitors can choose from a huge number of different beers, most of which are delicious, and most of which are extremely friendly on the wallet. Some of the most popular beers include: Pilsner Urquell, Krusovice, Bernard, Staropramen, Budweiser Budvar and Velvet. Beer in the Czech Republic (Czech: pivo) has a long and important history. The first brewery is known to have existed in 1118. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century, and the two cities most associated with Czech beer, Plzeň and České Budějovice had breweries in the 13th century. Much of the brewing history in Prague is connected to the various monasteries in the city, with brewing first recorded at the Benedictine Břevnov Monastery in 993AD. Today the Prague brewing scene is dominated

by Staropramen, although there are several smaller breweries, the oldest being U Fleků, which was founded in 1499. Since the 1990s various brewpubs have been established in the city. However, beer is not the only drink which is renowned in The Czech Republic. Becherovka is their most popular liquor. It has been around since the 19th century and is made of forty types of herbs since 19th century. It can be drunk on its own, but is also often used for cocktails, Slivovice is a plum brandy (also comes in other flavours), and is quite strong, so be careful how much you drink. The country also produces some excellent wines from the south Moravia region. BEER FESTIVAL Those who happen to be in Prague between May 17th and June 2nd are in for a real treat as the annual Czech Beer Festival takes place at the Exhibition Centre at Holesovice. Visitors will have the chance to taste more than 70 brands of Czech beer, as well as many local food specialities. Other perks include daily live music, traditionally dressed servers and a beer tent which can accommodate 10.000 people. In association with:
