TourisT Traps Like every other city in the world, there are certain things which visitors must look out for, and also certain things that prove to be very annoying. Check out the text below: Exchanging Money - Never exchange money from people on the streets. These people are constantly trying to con travellers with outrageous rates and counterfeit money. Also be careful when changing your money in exchange offices and find out exactly how much you are getting before you pass your money over. Some can be rip-offs. We thoroughly recommend that you use the Alfa Exchange Office and you can see more details about their service on the next page. Taxis – Some taxis have a terrible reputation for ripping people off. Emergency free phone numbers 150 - Fire Department 155 - Medical Emergency 156 - City Police 158 - Police Operators speak mostly Czech, so better to ask someone to explain your problem instead of you talking to them directly. pharmacy A pharmacy, which is available around the clock, can be found by calling: +420 224 946 982. They are a reputable company and have ranks in most of the main tourist areas. pickpocketing: This is one of Prague's most common crimes. Don't underestimate Prague pickpockets and don't think you can outsmart them. Many of them are highly skilled "professionals". Never leave your wallet lying free on a table or anywhere else. Best to keep it in a closed pocket. over-priced bills: Some places view foreign customers as easy prey for a rip-off. They may add a 20% commission on your bill for no reason at all, or can also add a service charge which they invent themselves and it can be as high as 40%. Always check your bill and ask if you have a question about it. In association with:
Make Your Money Go Further
One of the biggest concerns for visitors to Prague is how and where to change their money and these concerns are justified, as there are many exchange offices which are nothing short of being ripoff merchants. Thankfully, there is also an exchange office which offers fairness, good value and reliability. Alfa Prague is without doubt the city’s best exchange office and we urge all readers of this magazine to change their money with Alfa. Their offices are located on Na Příkopě Street 23 (inside the Panska Passage between T-Mobile and Salamander) and they have a second office which can be found outside Palladium Shopping Center.

Charles Bridge The Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a famous, historic and beautiful bridge that crosses the Vltava River. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge is 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas. They depict various saints and patron saints venerated at that time.
The Prague Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square and is a popular tourist attraction. The Clock is made up of of three main components: the astronomical dial; "The Walk of the Apostles"( a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures); and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. The oldest part of the Clock, dates back to 1410. The four figures flanking the clock are set in motion every hour and are usually greeted by hundreds of camera-armed tourists. The figures represent four things that were despised at the time of the clock's making – among them vanity, greed and death.
Astronomical Clock Old Town Square The Petřín Lookout Tower which can be found on top of Petrin Hill is a 60-metre high steel framework tower which strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower. It was built in 1891. Today it is a major tourist attraction. If you go up the hard way, the hill is roughly a half-hour walk. However, the hill is also served by a frequent funicular (cable car) and the tower has an elevator for disabled persons. On clear days, the tower offers a good view of the Prague skyline. It is open from 9am until 11pm every day. 12

Food For Thought
raditional Czech food is not exactly what one would call healthy or dietary, however it goes perfectly with Czech beer and there some really delicious dishes. The cuisine has been influenced by the cuisines of surrounding countries, and is marked by a strong emphasis on meat dishes. Pork is probably the most popular meat, while beef and chicken are also common. Goose, duck, rabbit and wild game are also served in several restaurants. Fish isn’t so popular with the locals, with the exception of fresh trout and carp, which is traditionally served at Christmas. As a side-dish, boiled and sliced dumplings are one of the mainstays of Czech cuisine and are quite often served with meals. Among the most popular Czech dishes are: Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut (pečené vepřové s knedlíky a se zelím); 18
Marinated beef sirloin (svíčková na smetaně) which comrpises of pickled roast beef, served with a cream topping and a teaspoon of cranberry compote; traditional beef goulash, even though it basically belongs to traditional Hungarian cuisine. There are countless traditional Czech restaurants in Prague and many of them are ran and sponsored by some of the large beer breweries. Some are excellent and some only average. Visitors should also keep an eye out for the lunch specials (normally served between 12 and 3pm) provided by such restaurants as they tend to be much cheaper. If the Czech dishes don’t tickle your fancy, there is no need to worry, because Prague boasts some top quality international restaurants, some of which have been featured in the pages which follow. Every restaurant featured has been visited by us at least twice to ensure you get reliable information. In association with:

With T.G.I. it's always Friday! Visits to foreign countries can always hold certain fears and anxieties and sometimes it's just comforting to know exactly what you are getting. Sometimes a familiar sight can be a relief. Sometimes, it’s just good to know that there is a T.G.I. Friday’s closeby. Having visited several T.G.I. Friday´s throughout Europe, we can safely say that all have left different impressions on us - and we can safely say that the impression made by the three Prague outlets was positive and memorable. 24
In Prague they offer something different, whether it be through their wonderful theme nights and parties, or through the quality of the food and service, or through the various special offers they present. Trust us, you won't be disappointed. And please keep an eye out for the previously mentioned theme nights. In the past we have attended events such as Ladies Night and Mojito Madness, both of which were funfilled and exciting. The credo of T.G.I. Friday's is to treat every customer as they would an honoured guest in their home, and it's no different in the Czech capital as the hand-picked staff go out of their way to ensure your visit is a memorable one. They offer all the renowned favourites such as dishes from the Jack Daniels grill, legendary burgers and scrumptious appetizers. The cocktails in the Prague branches are also superb! Unfortunately, in both cases, quantity does not equal quality, but thankfully, we have found a place which offers both superb music and wonderful dining under one roof and the combination is an absolute joy to behold. The place in question is Jazz & Blues Restaurant Bílý Koníček which can be found in the heart of Old Town Square (almost opposite the Astronomical Clock). The restaurant and jazz/blues club are housed in the medieval cellars of one of Prague’s oldest buildings ‘U zlatého jednorožce’, which in the past has hosted names such as Frank Zappa and Barbra Streisand. The 12th century building is the perfect setting for this unique musical and gastronomical experience.
Under the guidance of renowned head chef Martin Opršal, the restaurant serves mouthwatering Czech and international cuisine with a seasonal theme. All meals prepared from high quality ingredients. The wine list also boasts a local and international theme and is impressive to say the least. On the musical side of things, the Jazz & Blues Lounge is one of the main stages in Prague and attracts the best Czech and foreign artists, all of whom produce extraordinary performances. In short, this is a must-go venue. Highly recommended. In Prag gibt es unzählige Jazz Klubs und Restaurants. Christmas in Prague
Old Town Square is transformed into a winter Wonderland.
ou are probably all familiar with the song “Walking In A Winter Wonderland”. The tune comes to life during Christmas in Prague, as the city transforms into a festive fairytale unlike most others. If you can’t get into the Christmas spirit in Prague, then a visit to your family doctor is the first thing you should consider when you return home. Fairy lights, glistening trees, decorated shop windows, festive markets, seasonal parties – the city has them all in abundance. The only thing missing at the time of print was the customary December snow, but that may arrive with Santa Claus on December 24th. The biggest of the afore mentioned markets can be found on Old Town Square. The area is brimming with decorated wooden cabins, 34
some of which sell local and festive souvenirs, while others offer traditional Christmas cuisine or hot beverages such as mulled wine and hot chocolate which help to eradicate the chilly weather conditions. Old Town Square is also the home of the city’s biggest and brightest Christmas tree. It was brought from the Krkonose Mountains in the north of the country and is swathed in a blanket of lights. With Tyn Castle in the background, it makes for a spectacular sight, so make sure you have cameras at the ready. Just beside the tree, a podium has been erected and every night locals and foreigners, as well as many school children take to the stage and deliver some wonderful national and international Christmas carols. If ever Mr. Claus needed to move away from the North Pole, he would have to consider Old Town Square as his In association with:

Many families choose this day to decorate their tree and this is also the day when they enjoy their Christmas dinner. Alongside the River Vltava is the place to be for New Year’s Eve fireworks.
ike almost everywhere else on the planet, Prague goes into party overdrive on New Year’s Eve, as the city pulls out all the stops to ensure that locals and visitors have a time to remember. Many hotels and restaurants offer allinclusive nights which include food, drinks, live music and dancing. Prices vary according to class and prestige, but there is always something for everyone. The bars and clubs also offer special parties for those who like to live life in the fast lane. Some venues also require advance ticket payments, but these can often still be purchased during daytime of December 31st. New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without midnight fireworks and Prague doesn’t disappoint, as different parts of the city 36
offer stunning fireworks displays. The skies are illuminated and the ear-drums pound on the countdown to 2013. One of the biggest displays takes place alongside the river and thousands of people congregate on either side of the Vltava to watch the displays. We recommend that you find a spot close to Charles Bridge to catch the best views. Another huge fireworks display takes place on Old Town Square and the area also plays host to various live entertainment acts and a big screen which keeps you up to date with the time. We at Prague Night & Day would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers, advertisers, contributors and distributors a peaceful and prosperous 2013.

ith so much to see and do, and so many routes to walk, Prague is a city that can be draining both physically and mentally, so its fitting that the Czech capital has an excellent health and wellness scene. You will no doubt notice the huge number of Massage parlours in the city centre. Quantity does not always equal quality and we are happy to reccomend the Nam Jai Massage salon for those who are in need of losing their aches and pains or hold a need to feel relaxed. The city also offers various health spas where guests can comfort themselves with jacuzzi-whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas and various other devices. The city and indeed the country is also famed for its professional but extremely cheap dental services, and countless English-speaking 38
dentists can be found online. The ladies may also be interested in manicures and pedicures and once again, the standard in Prague is at a high level, and the prices are most likely cheaper than what you would find at home. The same can be said for hair-dressers. If total relaxation is what you are after, then a trip outside Prague may be what you need, because the country is renowned for its natural spring wells and healing waters. The most famous of these places outside the capital is Karlova Vary which lies in West Bohemia at the confluence of the Teplå River and the Ohře River. esidents of non-EU countries can save large amounts on their shopping purchases by claiming back a tax refund. This refund ensures that a bargain can be found in almost every shop in Prague. In order to be eligible for a VAT refund you must reside outside the country in which you are making your purchases. You are only eligible for a VAT refund if you spend a minimum amount in one store on the same day. Be sure to ask inside the store for details about how much the minimum amount is. The following steps must be followed: Step 1: Ask the shop assistant for a Tax Free refund voucher and complete this form in the store. Step 2: Upon leaving Czech Republic, present your purchased goods, passport, shopping receipt and the tax free form you filled out whilst purchasing your product. Make sure you have this form stamped by Customs. 42
Step 3: Claiming your refund. Ways of claiming your refund vary from company to company, but most tax free companies suggest that you post your stamped form to them and you should subsequently receive a refund direct to your credit card or bank account. There is also the possibility of presenting your stamped form to a tax free company’s cash refund location (normally anywhere in the world) for an instant cash refund. The questions is often asked: what goods are eligible for a tax refund scheme and the simplest way to answer this is by stating that the tax free schemes can be used for any taxable goods that are exported for personal use. Calculating your refund is quite simple. The VAT rate in Czech Republic is 20%, so if a dress is displayed at €100, including VAT, then the VAT amounts to €16.50. (Dress price: €83.5 + 20% VAT = €100.) The refund amount will thus be €16.50, minus a small handling fee. In association with:

s there another country in the world which is more fond of beer ? If there is, we have yet to visit it! Beer to the Czechs is like milk to a baby – They simply love it, and the country boasts the highest beer consumption per capita in the world This love affair has its advantages for tourists to Prague, because visitors can choose from a huge number of different beers, most of which are delicious, and most of which are extremely friendly on the wallet. Some of the most popular beers include: Pilsner Urquell, Krusovice, Bernard, Staropramen, Budweiser Budvar and Velvet. Beer in the Czech Republic (Czech: pivo) has a long and important history. The first brewery is known to have existed in 1118. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century, and the two cities most associated with Czech beer, Plzeň and České Budějovice had breweries in the 13th century. Much of the brewing history in Prague is connected to the various monasteries in the city, with brewing first recorded at the Benedictine 46
Břevnov Monastery in 993AD. Today the Prague brewing scene is dominated by Staropramen, although there are several smaller breweries, the oldest being U Fleků, which was founded in 1499. Since the 1990s various brewpubs have been established in the city. However, beer is not the only drink which is renowned in The Czech Republic. Becherovka is their most popular liquor. It has been around since the 19th century and is made of forty types of herbs since 19th century. It can be drunk on its own, but is also often used for cocktails, Slivovice is a plum brandy (also comes in other flavours), and is quite strong, so be careful how much you drink. The country also produces some excellent wines from the south Moravia region. Since the tourism boom in Prague, there is no shortage of places to try out these beverages, and in the pages which follow, we look at some of our favourite cafes and bars. The bar offers a great selection of drinks (local and imported), and their food menu has been reviewed as rivalling the best restaurants in the city, and their Irish breakfast is among the best you will find anywhere. We also recommend their Beer & Burgers special which is excellent value for money. It’s Prague's oldest Irish pub and is the place where the city’s first pint of Guinness was poured. As such, it's no surprise this cosy pub is the favourite watering hole of many who have taken up residence in this golden city sipping alongside Czech "locals". Guinness aside, they pride themselves on excellent food and are proud to boast one of the best menus in Prague. The door is always open and there's a warm Dublin welcome awaiting. 50
