Countdown to Wales Rally GB

6th March, Nish Kumar, Aberystwyth Arts Centre The double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee takes his new show on a national tour. Expect jokes about politics and humankind’s capacity for self-destruction. 8pm. £22.50.

6th March, Divided: Why We’re Living In An Age Of Walls, Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon Tim Marshall, author of Prisoners Of Geography, talks about his latest book, which looks at the new era of tribalism we’re living in and the barricades that are going up. 7pm. £11.50.

The countdown to this autumn’s Wales Rally GB, which takes place from 3rd to 6th October, got under way at the beginning of January with the launch of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at the Autosport International Show at Birmingham NEC. All four major factory-backed teams – representing Citroën, Ford, Hyundai and Toyota – unveiled their cars and their driver line-ups. The 10-month global adventure kicked off in Monte Carlo and will conclude in Australia in November, shortly after racing through the hills of Mid Wales. All eyes will be on sport’s top gun, France’s Sébastien Ogier – the first man in history to win five Rally GBs. ‘Wales is a very special event for

me,’ he says. ‘I’ve managed to master the very tricky conditions several times now. Hopefully, I will be competitive once again in October.’

Machynlleth’s Centre For Alternative Technology has a new course for spring, offering the chance to build an electric six-string steel guitar on 9th March. To ensure you leave with a working instrument, the design is much simplified but is constructed in a way that makes further upgrades – both technical and cosmetic – relatively easy. The course requires the use of basic hand tools – a hand saw, drill, screwdriver, rasp and sandpaper – and is based on repurposed wood and other materials.
