Prima tappa del viaggio sulle orme di Gaudì a Barcellona non può altro che essere la sua opera più celebre: la Sagrada Familia. Diventato capo progettista della enorme basilica nel 1883, a soli 31 anni, Gaudì ha dedicato alla sua costruzione tutta la propria vita, arrivando addirittura a stabilirsi al suo interno per seguire meglio i lavori. Animato da una grande fede, Gaudì lavorò alla Sagrada Familia fino alla morte. Qui, resosi conto che la costruzione della chiesa avrebbe comportato secoli (i più ottimisti stimano che possa concludersi attorno al 2030!), piuttosto che esaurire le risorse impostando tutto il gigantesco perimetro, l’architetto catalano preferì completare alcune sezioni dell’edificio in altezza (specie nell’abside), come per lasciare ai suoi successori una testimonianza precisa dell’idea originale. Dopo la morte di Gaudì i lavori continuarono per poco tempo e ripresero nel 1952 con un altro progetto, visto che l’originale andò perso in un bombardamento durante la guerra civile.
The first stage on the journey following in Gaudí’s footsteps in Barcelona must be his most famous work: the Sagrada Familia. After becoming the chief architect of the enormous cathedral in 1883, when he was only 31, Gaudí dedicated to the building all his life, to the point he moved inside it to better supervise the work. Animated by great faith, Gaudí worked on the Sagrada Familia until his death. Realising the building of the church would have taken centuries (optimists estimate it may end by about 2030!), the Catalan architect preferred completing some of the sections in height (especially in the apse), rather than finishing the resources for the gigantic perimeter, and also to leave his successors precise testimony of the original idea. After Gaudí’s death the erection continued for a little time and it began again in 1952 with another design, because the original one got lost in a bombing during the Civil War.
