1) Netbeans

⬗Backed by Oracle. ⬗Java based integrated development environment (IDE) ⬗Works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. ⬗Powerful editor that has all the goodies – Code checking, auto-completion, debugging tools, etc… ⬗Can be extended with plugins.

2) Eclipse

⬗Started by IBM, grew into a huge project. ⬗A little confusing to use at first, but makes a great tool later. ⬗Also has all the goodies – Code checking, auto-completion, and debugging. ⬗Can also be extended with plugins. ⬗Available on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.

3) Brackets.io

⬗Backed by Adobe. ⬗A simple and lightweight editor. ⬗Does not have as many features, but gets things done. ⬗Loads fast. ⬗Good choice for those who wants a simple editor without all the bells and whistles.

4) Atom

⬗An open source editor. ⬗Built on web technologies – HTML, Javascript, and Node.js ⬗Use web technologies to do web development! ⬗Fully customizable editor, since it is open source. ⬗Even has Git/Github integration.

5) Notepad++

⬗Lightweight editor. ⬗“Better than the Windows default notepad”. ⬗Fast and simple. ⬗Supports a ton of programming languages. ⬗Only available on Windows.
