* The Architectural Lighting concept of the event area was intended to resemble a Light House *The illumination of the building will serve as a visual symbol to remind people that Riverkeeper’s intend to protect the environment, where the lighting highlights the building’s architectural form * Site Lighting provides navigation for pedestrians through irregular Lanscape; the pathway lights leads to the entrance of the building

MAGAZINE

Project Objective: As MFA Lighting Design students we were asked to design the Architectural Lighting for a three story office building.

This project propose a renovation of private offices, open office spaces, a meeting room, public areas, and circulation spaces. The building originally exists in Kansas City, but is to be sited in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan for the proposed project. The class as a whole will choose a site of similar size to the base plans of the building. All students were asked to work in teams, and each team is required to determine their own client.

Client Selection: Metropolis Magazine Concept: Creating connection between design and culture. •Through Lighting Design creating “Metropolises” in every floor that would bring inspiration to Magazine employees. •The source and the ripple effect.

Metropolis is a monthly design magazine with a focus on sustainabilty and covers all aspects from architecture to interiors, products to wayfinding, lanscape design to urban-planning. The proposed Lighting design for this office space, is to create one major focal point for each floor that is called “Metropolis” Not only a focal point for the eye, but also these cores serve as the main lighting source that illuminate the surrounding spaces and links the floors to one another, just like a ripple effect.

Key Words: Core, Center, Metropolis 11

The mission of the magazine is to bring inspiration to designers. Same concept lies behind for creating “Metropolis” for each floor. The Library in the first two floor and the Multi-media room on the third are where the Metropolises were created. These areas will serve as brainstorming and focus points for writers to be motivated and inspired. The library area being the Metropolis in both floors, are called “the Lightbrary” The ceiling height is dropped to have clear and even ceilings. Light strips are designed to carry the light from the lightbraries to the other areas. These strips are placed not only on the ceiling but also vertically through the opening in the stairway area, to create a virtual connection between all three floors through lighting design. 12

To bring daylight into the building and control the flow of light through designed opennings.

Concept: To link fashion and architecture into a cohesive design. The intention is to deconstruct and reveal the processes of creating garments by drawing comparisons to the separate components of architecture. The form of the building, the envelope, resembles the skin which protect the body from its external environment. The electrical lighting symbolizes the seams that mend the spaces together.
