ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO DAMIAN CAMILLERI

SELECTED WORKS Conceptual | Urban | Technical 2013 - 2018

This piece defines my progress within & approach to architecture within university and practice, through a collection of work expressing the fundamental stresses and pulls that drive design. Primitive geometry of a Circle, Square and Triangle I believe to be an essenes of form, therefore are each provided a trajectory of architecture.

Archigram, a 1960s avant-garde group, envisioned a body of unbuilt work of a new reality in society bringing propositional and transformative qualities to Architecture. Their seductive futurist form finding pushed theoretical urban design with out any limitations. Design Ideas illustrated by this poster include Control and Choice, the Living Pod and the Plug-In City, sitting in the context of a Matabolist Japanese city

PostModernism Post-Modism prompted after the fail of modern architecture, captured through Le Corbusier’s Garden city and idolised by the demolition of Minoru Yamasaki’s residential complex. Post Modern Architecture was referenced as Architecture and ideas, the metaphor that a building can be read, defining its purpose. This is still prevalent in today’s architectural style

Sustainability is a balanced mix of Economic; Social; and Environmental sectors, thus providing a livable stable environment. This is greatly resonated within BIG design, buildings not like ‘buildings’, instead ‘a service to the community’

Infrastructure design concerns of future city projections become subject to exploration. Melbourne’s population density is expanding, and the Gen 5 airport studio studied the future of air travel. The solution was to separate terminals, landside and airside, to increase traffic flow. A gesture to form and structure was achieved with fragmented steel columns, derived from refracting light patterns of jet exhausts. These are subjected to dipping and swinging of flight paths mimicking a descent and takeoff of aircraft.

CYBERJAYA

The masterplanning of a futuristic city and conceptual form is encapsulated within the 100 year conceptual projection of Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The futuristic vision of Cyberjaya the year, Two Thousand, One hundred and Ten, developed a master planning project combined with a system of nature. The driven concept of the organism slime mold, created an interconnected system that will consume the current urban footprint overtime.

This concept captures the Motif ideologies, which drove the flowing design of the Brighton Surf Club The cultural aspects of Brighton were formed with flowing ideologies from visits of fashion exhibits and art galleries. The design was intended to evoke a creature of the sea, with twisting and flowing threads branching off the surf club.

STRANGE COMPOSITES As well as future masterplanning and JOINTS & COMPOSITES COMPOSITES STRANGE infrastructure is the intent of the materiality. JOINTS & COMPOSITES Exhibited within a Roland snooks elective, strange composites explored new limits on composite materials within architecture. The potential of fiber glass as a thin lightweight FINAL JOINT FINAL JOINT material was the focal experiment undertaken. A successful prototype was made by our team, and provided an insight of its limitations and potential as a building material in future construction.

A process of space exploration embarked between the relationship through expansion and compression of space. The studio commenced with esquisse models to convey architectural traits one of which is movement and space. Primitive forms of space in compression and expansion in relation to allocated program, created process diagrams of the arrangement of spaces in section and plan.

Commune Station Ben Milbourne DESIGN 6 St Albans; a demographic rich suburb, dominant market program, suburban housing typography. Leveraging the developing train station plot for density housing, hybridized with an explored trait of ‘hidden program’. Units reveal elements of surrounding facades, arranged in a modular configuration, raised above a typological array of retail program.

DESIGN 4 The Motif of experiential spaces was embarked in the exploration in context response, where the discovery of bi-product spaces were found in industrial locations. The study of industrial locations was conducted to propose a series of concepts to leverage by-product spaces. I saw the potential of experiential hostels, which the designed spaces invoked a crane driver view of industrial operations.

TECH 4 The exploration of this context response ideal can be seen in the facade and form of a commercial office tower proposal on Queensberry Street, Melbourne. The city pressure and desire for open space squeezed the floor plate design and rattles waves through the facade skin. The dominant Qnsbrry colouration Twr from the Sections surrounding building context is A106 inverted to invoke contrast against the greens and oranges with blues and pinks. PROJECT ADRESS:

ELEVATION SKETCHES

SITE PLAN

The original proposal for a development in Gisborne was rejected by the residents and local reporters. The prompted redesign took on a more Australian character addressed through the use of metal cladding, brick and wooden posts. The skillion roofs provided a perceived height reduction and vertical elements grounded the form allowing vegetated element to be incorporated.
