douglas day I can’t believe we will soon be enjoying the fall weather and ramping up our plans for our 2019 Centennial year at the Club. Behind the scenes, we are meeting and making plans for the year long celebration. As we near the Centennial year, we are spending time making many improvements to the Club and the courses.

Currently, the renovation of the courses is taking place and will be complete by October 1. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding during the course renovations. The end result will be spectacular and well worth the wait!

This time of year, we wrap up our pool season, the children go back to school and we begin to focus on our fall events. We will be bringing back our favorite member events including Back Porch Fridays, the Annual Fall Festival and our premier event, our Tradition Member/Guest Tournament.

A round of applause goes out to Swim Team Coach Lena Harrington and her Championship team of DAC Dolphins who won the City Championship for the second year in a row! Congratulations to the Team!

Warren Sibley, Strategic Planning Committee Chairman What a wonderful few years we have enjoyed at Dallas Athletic Club. We have seen unprecedented interest and growth. Our recent course and capital improvements have only increased demand. In our previous newsletter Laura Adams reviewed many of the upgrades the Club has undertaken these last few years. These truly are exciting times.

Even with all the success we’ve enjoyed and membership interest climbing, we have no time to rest. We are looking forward to the future of our Club. As chairman of the Strategic Planning committee, I’ve charged our committee with thinking in three-year, five-year, and ten-year increments. Furthermore, I’ve shouldered them by not only peering into their crystal ball and planning for outstanding facilities, which will address the wants and needs of an ever-changing membership, but also to keep ever mindful of those members on whose shoulders we stand. We want to make sure we meet the needs of our tenured members. This will be an inexact process with myriad answers. Ask a member their opinion of our Club future and you could easily get 900 different answers.

Know this: all areas of our Club continue to be examined. We are doing all we can to maximize our facilities for all our members, while remaining on solid financial ground.

Since I became chair of the Strategic Planning committee I’ve had numerous chats with members regarding their ideas for what our Club should do going forward. I love hearing from anyone with a good idea. I have some of my own. As a golfer, I’d love to have the most outstanding golf facility in the state. As a parent, I’d love to have the finest family facilities. As a part-time tennis player, I’d love indoor courts for hot/rainy weather. As someone who brings their family to the Club for the Fourth of July, I’d love an Olympicsize pool with a dedicated pool side kitchen. And as a fitness fanatic, I’d love to have a fitness facility to rival Equinox.

The task of my committee is different. We are charged with planning for the Club’s future. We will do our best to consider how to orient our Club for the greatest number of members and plan our resources accordingly. We have assembled some of the brightest and most talented folks at DAC to work toward this end.

We look forward to enjoying this Club together for many years to come.

Christine Mejia has Served the DAC for 40 Years Some children tend to be ‘Momma’s girl or boy’ or ‘Daddy’s girl or boy’.

Christine Mejia is a ‘Daddy’s girl’.

In the hospitality industry, there are “back of the house” and “front of the house” employees.

Christine’s father, Gilbert Mejia, was actually somewhere in the “middle of the house.” He was stationed prominently at the bar in the 19th Hole for over 34 years. As a terrific bartender, he served not only great drinks, but he also served great conversation with a healthy portion of humor, very much on the dry side. Outside of the Club, one of his favorite pastimes was fishing.

So now you know where Christine gets her sense of humor and her love of fishing!

Like her Daddy, Christine has 40 years in outstanding service to the membership. Her fondest recollection was the 75th anniversary of the Club.

Every employee wore a tuxedo with tails and white gloves, a true gala event! And to think, next year she will be here to celebrate another milestone, the Club’s 100th anniversary.

Imagine, an 18 year old part-time employee, starting in the ‘front of the house’ as a bus girl, eventually working in the ‘back of the house’ in the accounting department where she has memorized more than half the member’s numbers, their names, their grandchildren’s names—and the same for her fellow employees. She is extraordinary, and we are privileged to work beside her.

It is a tall order to write a tribute worthy for such a loyal, dedicated employee and friend.

She has contributed to the legacy of the cordial, welcoming character of this fine Club.

Please join us in offering her our heartfelt thanks for her loyalty and service.

Tolltag Club Front Gate Access

FRONT GATE ACCESS

TOLLTAG Many of you have updated your Member profiles to include your tolltag numbers. Once the gates are placed into operation, there will also be an attendant at the gate from 8am9pm. The gate attendant will be there to greet any guests to the club and allow entry for members who have not ordered an electronic tag or input their tolltag number.

Please note that electronic tags and/ or tolltag access are for members, member’s spouse and driving age children (under age 23).

In order to get Tolltag information for all members vehicles we are asking each member, spouse and children with their own vehicles to enter the DNT number from your toll tag into your member account. Only one tag can be entered per person, so each person associated with a membership will need to logon individually to https://www.dallasathleticclub.org/.

For Spouses and Children of members your login is your member number

followed by an “S” for Spouse of a “C” for children. If you have never logged into the member website, please contact Jacqueline Robinson for help with this process.

MEMBER PROFILE UPDATES Once you are logged in online, please be sure to update your Member profile.

Club Management

Course Update September/ October 2018 The courses are getting several upgrades. The front nine has had new tees added on several of the holes as well as the leveling of all tees.

New cart paths have been added or rerouted. Irrigation has been added

to areas that were not getting proper water. The leveling of #8 fairway has been completed. The collars of the greens have been leveled as well as the removal of Bermuda grass encroachment. We have reopened the front nine and are working on the back nine at this time. The scope of work is not as great on the back nine so we expect it to be completed much faster.

The Short Game Practice Area has been completely redone and is being prepared for grassing. The greens will be seeded with Bent grass that matches our existing greens.

The Driving Range is being irrigated and final grading is being done in order to plant grass.

Maintain Your Arm Speed To The Finish

GOLF NEWS If you’re feeling totally lost on the tee, you need a swing key that combats a lot of potential problems. Try keeping your arms swinging at a constant speed through the ball and all the way to the finish. Many golfers swing to the ball and stop; they “throw” the club at the ball. This can lead to misses of all kinds, so picking the proper correction

can be confusing. If you keep up your arm speed, you’ll create good rhythm and flow through impact. You might be amazed at how things fall into place. Making an aggressive pass through the ball is always better than trying to steer it down the fairway. Remember, you’re making a golf swing, so keep those arms swinging.

Junior Tennis Program:

FAMILY TENNIS DAY: Free Event!! Fun morning of tennis drills and games for parents and kids! Morning will begin at 9am and end at 11am just in time for the big Labor Day celebration at the pool!! Kids will get to compete against their parents in fun games and win prizes by hitting targets!!

Orange/Green Ball:

PRO AM: This is turning out to be one of the biggest pro am tournaments DAC has ever held! We have 17 women and 14 men signed up already. We will also have a great group of the best pros!

GOLF NEWS Recently, our fitness team member, Sue Beckham became certified as a Golf Movement Specialists through TPI (Titleist Performance Institute).

Sue is already an incredibly qualified and talented trainer, so the TPI certification just further enhances her ability to help our golfers improve their games through fitness.

Additionally, our new Director of Instruction, Stuart Hendley recently became certified through TPI. That gives the DAC, five certified Golf Performance team members. Our Director of Fitness, Jeff Hoke, Director of Golf, Lance Patterson and teaching professional Shelly Davis are also Golf Movement Specialists.
