president's letter
I think we all look forward to warmer days as March and April approach. Golf season gets into full swing, tennis is going strong, and we begin to prepare the pool for what should be another great season. This year will be a little different with the work starting on the Gold Course. I would like to thank Chet Williams, our golf course architect, and all those who attended Chet Talks. We had a great turnout, and I hope if you did not make it to the live event, you watch the recorded version online.
Furthermore, the window for voting in the board election is currently open, and the individuals elected to the Board will be announced at the Annual Meeting which will be held on March 8th. Please remember to vote. It is quite an easy electronic process. Also, be sure to add this event to your calendar. It will be a great time to hear a recap of the last year and learn what the future holds for 2023.
Annually, the Board reviews the Club’s budget for operations and strategic capital for special projects in order to evaluate our dues structure. Taking into consideration the Club’s desire to maintain not only the excellent service that you’ve come to expect but also preserve and improve our facilities, the Board
has passed a dues increase for 2023. The increase is a direct result of the current inflation trends and cost increases associated with labor, insurance, chemicals, etc. as well as future capital projects. While we understand that the increase is significant this year, it is in line or below what our sister clubs in the area have proposed. We appreciate your understanding.
It should be noted that our Gold Course infrastructure project is starting soon. This is the first time since Jack Nicklaus’s renovation in the 1980s that we will make significant changes to our course. Please have patience as we begin this new project. Lance and his staff will work diligently to help our membership navigate these times.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank two individuals who will be leaving the Board of Directors in March. Jay Lowenberg and Terry Jarvis have been diligently serving for the last six years. They both have chaired committees and been significant contributors to the health and well-being of the Club. Thank you both for your service and contributions to help make Dallas Athletic Club a premier country club.
See you at the Club!

SAYING GOODBYE TO Jose Martinez
It was July of 1978 that Jose Martinez came to work at Dallas Athletic Club. In the beginning, he worked in the men's locker room and could often be found also helping out as a server and cooking in the Nine and a Half, sometimes working 90 plus hours a week and sleeping at the Club. He eventually found his way into housekeeping and from there moved to the maintenance team where he has served as our Head of Maintenance for the past 30 plus years. With almost 45 years of service, he has seen many changes at the Club and with that length of tenure has always been able to provide invaluable insight regarding our facilities and history. We are thankful for his lifetime of service to the Club and wish him the best in his retirement.

L ate Fees, Payments, & Statement AdjustmentsOH MY!
More and more these days we are encountering problems with receiving our mail here at the Club; most likely you are experiencing this at your own home too. The reason this is important is that we have approximately 25% of our members that still pay their Club accounts by check. What we have found is that due to mail delays we are often not receiving your payments on time. This occurs not only with checks that you are writing and mailing but also with online bill pay with your financial institutions. Did you know that when you choose online bill pay, your Bank deducts the payment from your account on the date that you request and then they cut a check on your behalf and mail it to
New additon to your family?
We want to celebrate our littlest new members! Please e-mail cwheatley@dacstaff.org a picture of your baby along with their name and date of birth to be included in the following newsletter! I will also make sure they are updated in your DAC Member Profile!

Bill & Cathy Manor
As the year goes by, we continue to get more and more new members and enhance our amenitites here at Dallas Athletic Club. We also have members who have been lucky enough to see DAC evolve through decades and generations! Bill and Cathy Manor joined Dallas Athletic Club as newlyweds with the expectation of playing good golf and being social by the pool, but watched DAC become more than just a Golf Club.
What made you decide to join the Club in 1973?
At the time, we were looking for a reasonable Junior Golf membership with quality of good golfers to play with. We had friends that were members and encouraged us to come here!
What is the biggest change you have noticed at DAC?
DAC has evolved into an exciting family Club with events, activities and improvements that benefit more than just the golfer of the family.
What is your favorite memory at DAC?
Reminiscing about our time at the Club, we realized our kids literally grew up here! From summers at the pool and Sunday afternoon family golf games to annual events like the 4th of July, our family, and the DAC Family have become one and the same. So
much so, that both of our sons have now enjoyed memberships of their own!
As grandparents, our favorite memories are now made up of Sunday Family Brunch, the Fall Festival, Pancakes with Santa, and pool time!
We would like to take a moment to also highlight the members who will celebrate over 50 years of membership this year at Dallas Athletic Club!

What is your go-to food and beverage order? Sunday Brunch is always our favorite, but nothing beats a Nine and a Half cheeseburger with Michelob Light after a round of golf!
What is one thing you would tell a new member joining the Club? We have seen a lot of new members in the last 50 years. I would tell them to treat the DAC Staff with respect because we are all a part of the DAC Family.
What is your favorite event DAC has hosted? Why is this your favorite? The 1986 Grand Opening of the Jack Nicklaus design of the Blue Course is my favorite event DAC has ever hosted. We had 4,000 to 5,000 members and their families lining the tee box to watch Jack and Dennis Ewing play. This was a new beginning for the direction of Dallas

Athletic Club. I am proud to have been on the Board of Directors during such an exciting moment in history.
Is there anything else you want to share about your DAC experience over the years? We treasure all of the friends we have made since joining DAC, both members and staff.
Thank you to Bill and Cathy for taking the time to sit down with us and for their 50 years of support to DAC and the passion they bring to our Club!
If you would like to be considered for our next Member Spotlight, please email Cari Wheatley at cwheatley@ dacstaff.org. We enjoy being able to highlight our members and their enthusiasm for Dallas Athletic Club.

Every Great Dish Starts...
by Michael Lamping, Executive Chef
We take great pride in every dish we create using quality products, but have you ever thought about the kitchen equipment? When I came to DAC the one struggle I recognized immediately was that we had nice cooking equipment, but it was a little dated for modern times. I knew if we wanted to provide a memorable experience here at DAC, we needed to improve what we were working on. One thing to share, almost all of my time as a Culinary professional has been in the club industry. Over the course of the 20+ years one thing we recognized was clubs were moving from the coat and tie, formal dining to a more casual laidback setting. We quickly realized that ticket times were of the most importance. Earlier this January we rebuilt our entire a la carte hotline using only the best oven and ranges money can buy. Currently our whole line consists of Jade, which is an American based company out of California using the highest quality of steel and minimal parts. This allows not only for easy cleaning and maintenance, but
it also allows us to cook extremely efficiently utilizing the entire "S" top. The "S" top cooking surface has S shaped grates over a series of burners, allowing for a direct heat source or an indirect source to keep food warm before serving as opposed to a standard range that uses independent burners. The other thing we were lacking was where we had a large range we only had one stack of ovens. Below our ranges we also now have high-efficiency conventional and convection ovens with a high heat Plancha. This allows us to cook proteins very quickly and consistently so we no longer need to use skillets, which eliminates a step and also increases our efficiency. Above our ranges we also have a high temp salamander, which is an indirect heat source that we use for finishing in browning cheeses and/ or pasta dishes.
Our DAC culinary team has had very little turnover in the past couple of years, so a lot of the cooks worked on the old equipment. I wish I could’ve shared their faces when they walked in on a Tuesday morning with brand new stainless steel stations. I find the most important thing about this upgrade, and I’m not trying to take away from service, is that our staff recognizes that we truly care about their success and their productivity and this is one more reason why we were all proud to work as culinarians at Dallas Athletic Club.

by Travis Moore, Course Superintendent
We are excited to get the Gold Course improvement project underway. The overall goal of this project is to significantly improve both playing conditions and aesthetics throughout the entire course. This will be accomplished by combining design enhancements and major infrastructure upgrades. The scope of work includes the following: design improvements to several holes, resurfacing/rebuilding all greens, tee leveling/rebuilding, comprehensive irrigation system replacement, new
Golf Rule 16Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions
by Eric Dye, Golf Professional
Rule 16 in the USGA rule book talks about relief from abnormal course conditions, which includes immovable obstructions, dangerous animal conditions, embedded balls, and so forth. The purpose of the rule is to explain when and how the player may take free relief by playing a ball from a different place, such as when there is interference by an abnormal course condition (ACC) or a dangerous animal condition.
The instance that is most commonly seen with this rule is when and how to take relief when your ball is either on the cart path, or the cart path interferes with the intended area of stance or swing. In the diagram, it gives a great visual for the procedure of when you can take relief, and how to take complete relief. (The player is right-handed). In the two instances pictured, the nearest point for B1 is going to be P1, which is complete relief and
bunker sand, completely new cart paths, pond bank stabilization, and more. The bulk of this work is scheduled to be completed over the next four to six months. Greens will be seeded in early September and will re-open in late 2023 or early 2024 (pending weather conditions).
Our goal is to keep as much of the golf course open for play as possible during construction. Golfers should be prepared for daily hole closures beginning in late March. As the project progresses additional closures will be necessary. We look forward to a successful project and will continue to provide you with more information as it becomes available.
very close to the original condition. The nearest point of complete relief for B2 is going to be P2, and is further from the condition as the stance has to be clear of the abnormal course condition.

A correct drop is important when taking this relief, as you can see by the relief areas shaded in brown. A player may not drop any closer to the hole, and the ball cannot come to rest back closer to the abnormal course condition after taking relief. Golf Lesson Lag Putting
by Ryan Bowey, Head Golf Professional
I want to talk a little bit about the importance of lag putting. If we are able to 2-putt from 20, 30, or 40 feet, it can drastically reduce our scores! I believe that most golfers can make an adjustment to their mental approach in order to avoid those frustrating 3-putts.
For instance, when I am making my practice strokes as I get ready to address the ball, my only focus is the speed of the putt. In my opinion, speed is much more important than direction on a 20 to 40 foot putt. When I make my practice
What's in the bag?
Each newsletter we will be highlighting one of the Professional staffs “What’s in the Bag.” This month we will be looking at Golf Professional, Shelly Davis’s bag. She's been a Titleist staff member for 16 years and plays the TSR woods and the T200 in her irons. The only non-Titleist product is a Piretti putter. Ask Shelly about any of your equipment questions and remember to always get fit for your gear at DAC.
In Shelly's bag you will find...
strokes, I look at the hole while I swing the putter back and forth three or four times. I'm trying to feel how hard I need to hit the ball to get it to stop really close to the hole. I sometimes envision a 55 gallon oil drum around the hole and try to feel what type of speed I need to get the ball to stop within that imaginary circle.
Four and five footers are pretty difficult to make consistently, so if we can get our first putt to stop within a foot or two, our 3-putt avoidance will be much better. With my approach, there is no need to tweak your mechanics, just think a little differently as you get ready to hit that long putt. I hope this helps!
For those looking for more upper body rotation in your golf swing, try this easy stretch.
SIT
First, sit in a chair, with your arms behind your head and your legs crossed. This is hardly a step, but we'll call it a step.
ROTATE
Keep your legs crossed and straight, then turn your upper body.
LATERALLY FLEX
Once you max out your turn, add a lateral side bend. This is going to help open up the joints in the rib cage on the left. Take the biggest breath you can, then return to your start position.
ROTATE MORE, REPEAT
Start the process again and you'll find you're able to turn even more than before. This will translate to more turn in your golf swing if you do this simple stretch consistently.

Shot Selection
by Joe Sopko, Head Tennis Professional/Juniors Tennis Director
High percentage shot selection can be defined as using the best and most appropriate speed, spin, and direction on any ball, given your distance from the net, the height of the ball you must play, and your opponent's court positions. It includes carefully considering the score and where the match's momentum lies. It is always the shot that, under the circumstances, has the highest probability of clearing the net and landing in the court. It is never the shot hit with the idea that I will hit this for a winner. This is why control is so much more important than power. Being able to control the height and direction of your shots is necessary to have a good winning percentage.
MAKING TENSION ADJUSTMENTS on your racquet
If you want to make an adjustment or are not sure about your string tension, here are a few tips to remember.
Lowering your tension will give you more power, more comfort and will open up the sweetspot of your racquet.
Increasing your tension will give you more control and allows you to generate your own power more (instead of the racquet or string doing it for you).
Spin is affected both positively and negatively by increasing and decreasing tension, so it is difficult to determine which setup would help provide more/less spin.
If you are using a hybrid string setup with a polyester and something softer like a multifilament or natural gut, we usually recommend stringing the polyester at 5 percent lower tension to account for its stiffness relative to the other string. However, once again this comes down to personal preference, so try your two strings at different tensions and see how they feel to you.
Indian Wells - If you are looking for a fun tennis tournament to go to, Indian Wells should be at the top of your list! It will take place from March 6 until March 19 of this year. There is literally not a bad seat to buy at a great price. You will watch the best players compete and see them on the grounds during their off time. This is a great trip with fantastic tennis, great food, the best weather and only a short flight from Dallas!

Tennis Elbow
by Jeff Hoke, Fitness Director
Anyone can get tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), not just athletes. Repetitive arm motions weaken arm muscles and tears the tendons that attach muscle to bone. Tennis elbow can cause pain when you bend or straighten your arms or grasp or lift items. Most people get relief without surgery.
WHAT IS TENNIS ELBOW?
Tennis elbow is an overuse injury that occurs when tendons (tissues that attach muscles to bones) become overloaded, leading to inflammation, degeneration and potential tearing. It commonly affects tennis players who grip their racquets too tightly. But anyone can develop this painful condition, medically known as lateral epicondylitis.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TENNIS ELBOW AND GOLFER’S ELBOW?
Tennis elbow is a condition of the lateral (outside) epicondyle tendon, or outer part of the elbow. Golfer’s elbow is a condition of the medial (inside) epicondyle tendon, or inner part of the elbow.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TENNIS ELBOW?
Tennis elbow is usually the result of overuse. Symptoms tend to come on slowly. Pain may get worse over weeks and months. Signs of
tennis elbow include:
• Burning or pain on your outer elbow that may travel to your wrist
• Pain when twisting or bending your arm
• Stiffness or pain when extending your arm
• Swollen elbow joint that’s tender to touch
• Weakened grip when you try to hold items
HOW IS TENNIS ELBOW MANAGED OR TREATED?
Tennis elbow may get better on its own with little, if any, treatment. However, that recovery may take up to 18 months. Proven nonsurgical techniques exist that can accelerate your recovery. Nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments for tennis elbow include:
• Rest and Ice
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Braces
• Physical therapy
• Steroid injections
• Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
HOW CAN I PREVENT TENNIS ELBOW?
These steps can help you avoid tennis elbow:
