Please welcome Classic Kitchens on page 23, Classic Kitchens in Derby have been in business for over 20 years and have a great reputation for good quality affordable kitchens and bathrooms. Read all about The Fishponds ‘New addition’ the Raft Restaurant on page 25; my partner and I went along recently to review the food, it was a real pleasure:-D. Parents and grandparents in the area may wish to know about The Treehouse Boutique in Matlock Green. They provide really good quality second hand clothes and toys for children 0 - 10 years old, plus lots of new stuff and gifts/ cards as well, please see page 26. Now is the time of year that you might need SGP Garden Machinery. They’re family run business based in Wirksworth, they can mend anything that has a small petrol engine, such as your lawn mower, chain saw, cement mixers etc, see page 30. If you have any sash windows that need refurbishing, I can highly recommend the Traditional Sash Company, see page 19. They really know what they’re doing, they did a fantastic job on our sash windows and I would recommend without hesitation. Plus read on page 32 about a lovely charity in our area, the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline based in Bonsall. They provide respite and recuperation holidays in this area for young children affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor disaster.

Dogs and Cats Can Suffer from Allergies Just Like Humans Did you know that cats and dogs can suffer from allergies, just like humans? In addition, did you realize that your pets’ allergies are more likely to manifest during the human allergy season, a time of year when pollen and other allergens in the environment can cause distress and irritation for human and animal allergy sufferers alike. Although pet allergies can be present yearround, the spring allergy season can particularly affect allergic pets with agonizing symptoms such as constant itching, scratching and licking, and resulting skin inflammation and irritation. Pets can be affected by the same seasonal allergens, such as pollen, as people. It’s vital for owners to recognize the importance of the most common signs of pet allergy, including scratching more than usual, licking the same area excessively, hair loss and skin rash. Through increased awareness, your vet can go on to correctly diagnose the cause, reduce your pet’s suffering, relieve itchiness and skin lesions as efficiently and safely as possible, and improve your pet’s quality of life. Until 30th June Carrick have £10 off a skin consultation for your pet & a 2 for 1 on Atopica, used to treat some allergic conditions. Please contact us on 01629 581234 for more information.

COMPUTER TIP Is Your Computer Obsolete? There are a number of computer sales folk who would have you believe that your Windows XP system is obsolete and has got to be replaced now. This is nonsense! The reason they’re saying this is because Microsoft have announced that there will be no further updates for it, however it is a very mature system and has been getting updated and fixed for around 14 years. It’s pretty secure now. More so than Win.8! Also, if you avoid security dangers like Internet Explorer and use (still being updated) alternatives like Chrome or Firefox, you reduce any risk further. Since Microsoft’s announcement that there will be no further updates, there has, in fact, been one so far!

Happy Birthday Kip Mcgrath Matlock Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Kip

Happy birthday to you! Happy 2nd Birthday to you!

Kip McGrath celebrates its second birthday this week since opening its doors to local students and parents, raising confidence, improving skills and supporting the work done in our local schools. They don’t need to ‘blow their own trumpet’ when others can do it so well for them!!!! Here are some of the wonderful things that have been said by students, parents and tutors alike about the amazing work and results that Kip in Matlock has achieved in the last two years.

“I like Kip McGrath because I have moved ahead two years in Maths in just under a year” (Eleanor, age 12) “I am now more confident at school thanks to Kip McGrath.” (Sam, age 9) “My English grade has gone from E to C in one year of Kip.” (Isaac, age 16) “It has helped me be more confident and I have made great friends.” (Matthew, age 9) “Kip McGrath and the team at Matlock have made my boys so much more confident in their Maths. They aren’t afraid to give it a go now!” (Mrs W parent) “Since being with Kip McGrath my daughter has progressed significantly in English and Maths. She is now exceeding all her targets at school. I would recommend Kip McGrath to anybody wanting more confidence.” (Mr R parent) “I love the friendly atmosphere and seeing the smiles when ‘the penny drops’!” (Julie, Tutor) Jo, Kip McGrath Centre Director says “Helping our students to realise their full potential and seeing the impact that has on them and their families is a real joy and the driving force behind everything we do.” The results speak for themselves: • Student N :improved his spelling by three years in one year at Kip. • Student C :raised his reading age by one and a half years in five months. • Student A: raised his Maths level by one year in five months. Go along for your child’s free assessment and get them on their own ‘’ladder to success ‘’ using Kip’s tailor-made learning programmes, professional tutors and a relaxed learning environment.

Dales Directories Restaurant Review For our main course I ordered ‘Taste of Derbyshire’ Slow cooked pork belly, Local black pudding, truffle mash, Braised shallots & real gravy. My other half ordered Braised blade of Derbyshire beef, Ox tail and mushroom ragout, potato fondant, Star anise carrots.

There's always a lovely warm welcome when we visit The Fishpond Matlock Bath, and last Thursday was no exception. The Fishpond is essentially a music venue with a venerable history, staging live music at least 3 times a week. They also have an onsite bakery and now their NEWEST ADDITION is the Raft Restaurant that serves locally sourced restaurant quality food. We’d booked a table at the Raft Restaurant, which only opened in March 2014 and is situated upstairs over the main bar area at The Fishpond. Alannah our waitress for the evening showed us up the stairs to the newly opened restaurant. The log fire was burning brightly giving the traditional but contemporary style restaurant a lovely cosy feel; I immediately thought ‘I must book our Christmas Day meal here, for the family as it seemed so homely and comfortable’! No expense had been spared as the interior design has been executed to a very high standard; they’ve retained many of the original features such as the high beamed ceilings, and the quality of the furniture, carpets, curtains, were really very good quality. While we contemplated the menu. Alannah took our drinks order; I ordered a large glass of Merlot and my partner decided to have a pint of beer from the extensive range of beer on offer downstairs, The Spring Menu is £24 for two courses and £28 for three courses, although by the time this review goes to print they will have introduced the Summer Menu by then. So from the Spring menu I ordered Thai crab cakes, Asian slaw, red chilli coconut sauce, and my other half ordered Cauliflower, cumin & toasted almond soup served with Warm Fishpond artisan bread. While we were waiting for our starter to arrive, Alannah brought us a canapé of Breaded goats cheese, on tomato puree served on a ‘Chinese’ style soup spoon. This was followed by a bread board of Focaccia and Sour dough bread served with poppy seed butter, (all freshly baked on the premises).

We both agreed that the presentation and flavours of both our meals were excellent. I loved the delicate flavour of the truffle mash that complemented the beautiful soft flesh and crisp crackling of the pork belly. My partners beef was cooked to perfection with a rich and flavourful gravy. His fondant potato was a luxurious addition to his plate. It was also lovely to know that most of the food on our plates was sourced locally. The Raft get their meat from Coates the butchers based in Two Dales, they have an amazing reputation, and their veggies and some of their meat are from Garden Farm based near Riber Castle in Matlock. In case you’re interested you’ll regularly find Tim the owner of Garden Farm, (they also have a great reputation) at our local farmers markets. Before ordering our desert Alannah brought us a palate cleanser of Homemade lemonade served with crush ice, it was very refreshing. To finish, I ordered ‘St Clements’ Lemon curd, meringue & blood orange fool and my partner ordered Fishpond Sticky Toffee Pudding Butterscotch Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream, followed by coffee for two. I actually didn’t get to see my partners pudding as it did the quickest disappearing act on the plate I’d ever seen! My desert was lovely, I had chewy sweet meringue that complemented the sweet sharp taste of the lemons and oranges very well. We both found the evening relaxed and informal, and the staff looked after us really well, If you’re looking for a place to unwind or to celebrate with friends and family, I would definitely recommend that you book a table at the Raft soon. The Raft Restaurant is already generating an excellent reputation for great food and service, even though they’ve only been opened for a very short time. Alannah informed us that they take dinner bookings from Wednesday to Saturday evenings and they’re also open for Sunday lunch from 12 till 6 pm and are closed on a Monday and Tuesday. To book your table simply call 01629 581773

We both enjoyed our starters, mine had just the right amount of spice and coconut that perfectly complemented flavour the fish cakes and the Asian slaw. My partners soup was hot and tasty with a sophisticated and subtle blend of flavours, that went really well with the bread.

Home to one of the world’s worst and most infamous nuclear accidents, Chernobyl is still heavily contaminated, despite the fact that a small number of people are now allowed into the area for a limited At the welcome BBQ amount of time. The notorious accident caused over 6 million people to be exposed to radiation, and estimates as to the number of deaths that will eventually occur due to the Chernobyl accident range from 4,000 to as high as 93,000. The accident released 100 times more radiation received than the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs. Belarus absorbed 70 percent of the radiation fallout, and its citizens have been dealing with increased cancer incidence ever since. Even today, the word Chernobyl conjures up horrifying images of human suffering. The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line is a U.K. Charity founded in 1991 to help the children of Belarus and Ukraine. There are now around 130 Links throughout the country who raise funds to bring groups of children to the UK for respite care (approx 3,000 children every year). The Links are all run by volunteers, all of their fund raising goes towards bringing groups of children to the UK for health and recuperation holidays. Chris and Janice Broome from Bonsall formed the Bonsall link with the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line in December 2002. Chris became involved when he joined a delegation in Minsk helping them manage their environment. On Chris’s return to England as he boarded the plane he was amazed to see that most of the passengers on board the plane were Belerusian children, they were travelling to England for a holiday. He became intrigued and on his return contacted the Chairman of the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line and was persuaded to set up a link in the Bonsall area. He is now the Link chairman and has visited Belarus on many occasions to see for himself the current situation over there and to meet the families of the children. Their aim is to bring between 10-20 children from Belarus to the Derbyshire Dales area every summer for a months holiday. The children are invited from towns and villages and are mostly aged between 9-12 years. They come with a leader who can often be an English teacher from the children’s school. There aim is to help these children by boosting their immune systems and offering them respite, from the relentless bombardment of radiation in their their environment and the food they have to grow and eat. A month staying with families here, eating ‘clean’ and nourishing food and drink and breathing clean air can really make a difference to their health and even increasing their life expectancy.

The Bonsall Link are looking for host and support families for the children visiting in the summer of 2015, from mid July to mid August, it is a very rewarding experience. There is a network of support for host families—you would not be on your own. For at least three days a week the children participate in group activities organised on their behalf. Host and support families are encouraged to accompany children on these outings. An English speaking Belarusian interpreter/ Having a great time at the seaside leader will also accompany the group should there be any language difficulties, and will be on hand 24 hours a day to assist with any concerns host families may have.

We Need Volunteer Host Families & Support Families: Families that help the children have a great time whilst in the UK fall into two categories: A family that can host two children for either two or four weeks during the summer; A support family who may be unable to host but can provide assistance to hosting families. Host families welcome children into their homes as part of their own family. Over the years many hosts have acquired "extended families" as contact is maintained over the years with children that have stayed with them. Some hosts get very attached to the children and pay for them to return to the UK on a private basis, once again arranged through the charity.

Help With Fundraising The simple truth about running a charity as active as the Chernobyl Children's Life Line is that we are continually fund raising to finance the children's visits. It costs over £400 in air fares and UK Visas to get each child here and to pay for their activities here. Please consider giving a Chernobyl child a chance, Chris and Janice would be happy to provide you with more information. They would be equally pleased to give a presentation/ talk to organisations that you’re a member of or to schools in the local area. Regular informal meetings are held in Bonsall to plan the children’s visit and to organise fund raising events etc.

Contact Chris Broome on 01629 824512 or email or visit the national web site to find out more.
