Whilst many of us are enjoying the warm spell, vulnerable people such as young children and the elderly are particularly at risk. Apparently the exceptionally hot weather can drive the body into overdrive trying to cool itself down; if you can please keep an eye out for any neighbours that you have concerns about. Have you come across that ‘Crazy Wrap Thing’ yet (see page two)? Well you know when you try to eat healthily and exercise regularly but you still can’t get rid of those last few inches around your ‘tummy’ or you have unsightly ‘bingo wings’ or ‘flabby thighs’? Well on page two you will see details of how you can try the ‘ultimate body wrap’ for yourself, it can make a differnce on these areas and more in as little as 45 minutes. We would like to welcome our new advertisers. Simpson Jones Solicitors on page six, they will be providing a regular article on Wills & Probate, Carrick Veterinary Group share their ‘Healthy Pet Club’ on page 11, Creation Studios on page twenty two provide printing and embroidery services. And KMR Enterprises supply First Aid Training for businesses with five or more employees see page twenty three. Jo Linthwaite from Kip Macgrath Matlock will be sharing her pupils successes with us in each issue & Fiona from Music Matters on page nineteen is available to teach you the basics of learning an instrument right up to advanced level. In July my partner and I were lucky enough to review Stones Restaurant in Matlock, read more on page thirteen. On Trip Adviser Stones have 144 reviews so far, I’m not surprised that nearly all of them are five star ratings. Anyway have a great Summer and speak to you again in October, copy deadline 14th September.

Sara says…… When my boss first stuck me in Wills and Probate, I thought great, the death department! Looking back, how wrong could I have been! I qualified as a solicitor in 2005 after being advised that a bridesmaid wasn’t actually a profession. I loved to read and digest information so I chose to study law at the University of Derby. I picked Derby in particular as Oxford was full and Cambridge was too far for me to take my washing home at the weekend! After graduating I set out like every eager graduate to find a firm. I was a 21 year old woman who dreamt to live the life of Ally McBeal with the pinstriped suits, flashy offices and fast sports cars. So naturally I chose to practise in criminal law at a firm in Nottinghamshire. However, glamorous it was not! With bars on the windows and 3am call outs to defend criminals that had committed petty crimes. I soon wondered if I’d chosen the right career. The final straw came when I was forced to defend someone for a horrific crime which I knew he was guilty of. From that point onwards, I knew that I could no longer continue and deep down I was disappointed in myself that I had lost sight of what the law

6

was truly about-helping people. So I asked my boss if I could try something else and the only option available was Wills and Probate. To be honest, this was a real low point as I couldn't see how I could fulfil my ambition to help people, nor could I see the opportunity of progression. This was until I met my first client and thankfully that changed everything. My first client walked into my office with a friend beside her for support. Unfortunately, her father had just died and she was the only living relative. The father had not made a will so my client automatically inherited everything. The process seemed straightforward yet before closing the door behind her, she stopped and said that there was a rumour years ago that her dad had fathered another child, yet she had no details. So naturally I told her to look into it as this could potentially change her entire inheritance. The two left and I thought no more of it. Whilst typing out my new CV, my client’s friend came back into the office and she had been crying so I got the tissues and asked her what was wrong. The lady told me that she was in fact the long lost daughter of the gentleman that had passed away. She said she couldn't find the courage to tell anyone and just like that, a boring career in the death department came to life. It was about real people, real lives and real problems that I could help to solve. The rest is history and we come to the present day.

Stones Restaurant www.stones-restaurant.co.uk 01629 56061 It was a real privilege when we were given the opportunity to visit Stones in Matlock to take a look at their newly redesigned restaurant and sample their menu.

For our mains we ordered Hake which was the ‘Fish of The Day’ with Lemon Crushed Potato, Creamed Leeks and Caper Veloute and my partner ordered Braised Blade of Derbyshire Beef, Crushed Celeriac, Potato Croquette, Bay Leaf Jus.

Unfortunately In the Spring of 2012 when Stones Restaurant were in the middle off a redesign by adding a riverside conservatory and terrace a devastating fire affected theirs and neighbouring businesses's. Thankfully all the work is now complete and they reopened their doors on the 14th May, a day before their 5th birthday.

I’d love to describe to you in more detail how the food tasted but unfortunately we don’t have the space here, maybe next time! Suffice to say that you don’t get ‘Two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence’ for nothing!

They have much to celebrate as it looks fantastic, the terrace is a particularly elegant place where you can enjoy pre dinner drinks and watch the world go by. When we visited them it was a lovely sunny Wednesday evening in July. We were shown to our table in the conservatory and offered the pre dinner drinks menu. I ordered a Vodka Martini and my partner ordered a soft drink. These were served with some Home Made Vegetable Crisps and some Spicy Popcorn. We also ordered a bottle of Pinot Blanc Reserve which was put on ice for us. To keep things simple at Stones you can order two courses for £27 or three courses for £30. We ordered our starters - Home Made Black Pudding, Onion Compote and Pancetta, and I ordered Wild Mushroom and Spring Onion Risotto with Parmesan and Truffle Oil.

13

Stones also provided with our main course Home Made Tomato and Herb Bread and Black Treacle Bread with Home Made Butters. For desert we had Toasted Salted Caramel and Hazlenut Tart, and my partner had Warm Prune and Honey Cake followed by Coffee and Home Made Chocolates.

Kev Stone, Head Chef, his partner Jade Himsworth and sister Katie Temple have created a really special place with amazing food and with such attention to detail. I suggest that the next time you would like a romantic evening with your partner a family get together or you would like to impress a business colleague then take them to Stones.

James’ Story

When James went to Kip in Aug 2012 his Assessed Reading age and Comprehension were 6 years 1 month and Spelling at Year 2 His improvement in June 2013 was Reading8 years 3months, Comprehension – 8 years 6 months and Spelling at Year 4

In August 2012 James was 7 ½ years old (year 3) and was already finding school life tough, especially Maths! It’s hard to look around and see all your mates doing better than you and finishing the work before you. He grew quieter and quieter and reached such a low point that he wouldn’t put his hand up to answer any questions in case he got the answer wrong and A staggering two year growth in was laughed at. just one year! Luckily his mum found Jo at Kip McGrath and took him along for a So if you know a James… Call Jo at session. The programme included phonics and she encouraged him to read rhyming stories such as ‘Cat in the Hat’. As he learned the various combinations of the letters in the book he found he could then make more complex words from them. He loved going to ‘Kip’ and as his confidence grew so did his achievements. Success breeds success. He didn’t stop there… Jo adapted his learning plan to include grammar, writing, reading/comprehension and maths. James found that he could use his new skills in these other areas as well and so his confidence and selfesteem increased immensely. James’ hand is now one of the first up in the classroom each day and he has a big smile on his face as he goes to school, but maybe that is
