You don’t have to be a diehard fan to appreciate the start of the baseball season.

For the winter-weary, Opening Day is a sign that spring has finally sprung. It’s also a day when baseball history is made—perhaps more often than you think. These Opening Day facts will get you in the mood to hear those immortal words for the first time this year: “Play ball!”

Snowball Fight: On Opening Day in 1907, the New York Giants faced off against the Phillies at New York City’s Polo Grounds after a heavy snowstorm. When the Giants fell behind, disgruntled fans began flinging snowballs onto the field, forcing the umpire to call a forfeit in the Phillies’ favor.

Presidential Pitches: On the first day of the 1910 season, William Howard Taft became the first president to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Since then, every president besides Jimmy Carter has thrown at least one ceremonial first ball for Opening Day, the All-Star Game or the World Series.

Rival Riot: Brooklyn’s Washington Park was the scene of an Opening Day riot on April 11, 1912. With the Brooklyn Dodgers down 18-3 to their rival, the New York Giants, fans stormed the field and delayed the game, which was eventually called on account of darkness in the sixth inning.

Lucky Feller: There has only been one no-hitter in Opening Day history. Cleveland pitcher Bob Feller, then just 21 years old, threw it against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park on April 16, 1940. Baseball's First All-Star Game Red-Handed: Boston Braves fans sat down to an unpleasant surprise on Opening Day in 1946. The outfield stands had recently received a fresh coat of red paint, but cold, damp weather had prevented it from drying. Hundreds of angry, paint-stained spectators marched to the Braves’ offices. The team agreed to pay their cleaning bills and made a public apology in a newspaper ad.

Making History: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on Opening Day in 1947, becoming the first African American to play for a Major League team. The 28-yearold made his debut at Ebbets Field, playing first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Switch Pitcher: Harry Truman was the only president to throw out left-handed and right-handed first pitches on Opening Day. He showcased his ambidextrous talents on April 18, 1950.

Out of the Park: Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his 714th home run on Opening Day in 1974, tying Babe Ruth for most career homers. He beat Ruth’s record later that week and reached 755 by the end of this career. Aaron’s record was not eclipsed until Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run in 2007.

Opening Streak: On Opening Day in 1974, several naked fans rushed onto the field at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, disrupting the game and inciting violence in the stands.

Famous Firsts: Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. share the record for most career home runs on the first day of the season, with eight Opening Day homers each.

Star Starter: Hall of Famer Tom Seaver has started the most Opening Day games in history—11 for the Mets, three for the Reds and two for the White Sox.

The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African-American Art Saint Louis University Museum of Art opened on February 21 continuing through May 18 The Thompson collection encapsulates unique aspects of African American Art with works from artists that represent every corner of the country from every decade of this nation’s history. All together it is a colorful array of paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed media works that resonate with every person regardless of race, ethnicity or even knowledge of art. The strength of the collection is in its diversity as it includes works from many African American “masters” as well as lesser known or emerging artists equally important to the culture and continuation of African American art. Visitors will see works by celebrated African-American artists such as Romare Bearden, Thelma Johnson Streat and Henry O. Tanner, along with works by artists who have been considered emerging, regional or lesser known and are not typically recognized within the traditional narratives of African-American art.

This exhibition is supported in part by Emerson, Mary L. and Richard T. Fisher, the Saligman Charitable Foundation, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Lawrence H. Biondi, S.J., Endowment for the Visual Arts.

The works are owned by the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia and The Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Collection of African-American art. Although they both now reside in Connecticut, the Thompsons maintain connections to St. Louis and SLU in particular. Brenda Thompson received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from SLU in 1980 while Larry Thompson was born in Hannibal, Mo. The Saint Louis University Museum of Art (SLUMA) originally was built in 1900 as the home of the St. Louis Club. The club purchased 14 paintings exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair which formed the nucleus of a collection that became one of the best-regarded private collections in the city.

A fire in 1925 led to the end of the St. Louis Club era on Lindell. Despite only minor damage, the building was sold to a succession of companies over the years, until the University purchased the building in 1992.

Designated as a historic landmark, the structure is distinguished for its architectural character, features and rich detail.

$7.00 10 Things You Didn't Know About Loading the Dishwasher Most of us give little thought to our dishwashers -- we just load the dishes, add the detergent, and turn it on. But a bit of planning goes a long way toward keeping your dishes and utensils in their best shape and getting them as clean as possible. Before loading your dishes, you should take a look at where the water is coming from -- whether there are two water distributors or only one. With this knowledge, you can arrange your dishes to get them as clean as possible. Also, remember to adjust the washing cycle depending on what you put in the dishwasher -- a heavy-duty cycle for pots and pans, a gentle cycle with cooler water for fine china and crystal.

Tips for Using the Dishwasher

1. Make sure silver and stainless steel are separate; their metals can be damaged if they touch; a chemical reaction could cause staining on the silver.

2. Place pots, plates, and heavy-duty dishes on lower rack (heat and water pressure are more intense there).

3. Stagger small plates with large ones.

4. Load pots, pans, and large cookware on the sides (delicate glasses and dishes go on the top rack).

5. Place glasses and mugs in rows between prongs.

6. Place bowls down the center of top shelf.

7. Make sure no items touch or they may get chipped.

Items That Don't Belong in the Dishwasher Knives: They will become dull.

Pewter, brass, and bronze: It will tarnish.

Wood: It may warp or crack.

Cast iron: The seasoning is lost and the iron rusts.

Tin pots and pans: It may rust.

Gold-plated flatware: It will become discolored.

China and crystal: It is delicate and may crack.
