• On Jan. 31, 1606, in London, Guy Fawkes, a chief conspirator in the plot to blow up the British Parliament building, jumps to his death moments before his execution for treason. He had been found lurking in a cellar of the Parliament building with 2 tons of gunpowder.

Trading Stamps

Q: I have quite a few books of Blue Chip trading stamps and wonder if they have any value. I am from California and originally got them at gas stations. -Paul, Apopka, Fla. A: I remember my grandmother carefully pasting trading stamps into books after each visit to the grocery store. There were at least a dozen companies that promoted them. Blue Chip began in about 1956 when Chevron Oil, Thrifty Drugs and several grocery stores in California began to offer them as premiums. After the books were filled, they could be redeemed for items such as toasters, waffle irons and coffee pots. Blue Chips Stamps is now a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. At a recent paper show in Phoenix, I saw books of Blue Chip stamps priced at about $10 each. ••• Q: I am writing in regard to an old Bible I found in my late father's belongings. It was published in 1845 in Boston. -- Elsie, Springfield, Colo. A: I receive questions concerning early Bibles on a regular basis. The simple fact is that most Bibles printed after 1790 are fairly common. Victorian Bibles might be quite ornate and, perhaps, interesting to the owner, but to a serious collector it is not all that valuable or scarce. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions to every rule. William J. Chamberlin is a member of the International Society of Bible Collectors, and he might be able to advise you. His contact addresses are 6413 Snow Apple Drive,

Clarkston, MI 28346;; and ••• Q: I bought a mug years ago in a shop in Portland, Maine. It is a commemorative mug celebrating the centennial of the United States in 1876. How much do you think it is worth? -- Erma, Apache Junction, Ariz. A: I examined the photo you sent, and after doing a little research, I have determined that it was manufactured for J.M. Shaw and Company of New York by W.T. Copeland & Sons of Britain. This design was part of a 40-piece set that included a teapot, creamer and sugar, plates, cups and saucers. A complete set recently sold at auction for $1,500. Your mug might be worth about $50. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

• On Feb. 1, 1884, the first portion of the Oxford English Dictionary is published. In 1857, members of London’s Philological Society decided to produce a dictionary that would cover all vocabulary from 1150 A.D. to the present. It took more than 40 years to complete. • On Jan. 28, 1915, the captain of a German cruiser orders the destruction of the William P. Frye, an American merchant ship off the Brazilian coast. He had ordered the Frye to jettison its cargo as contraband, but the ship’s crew refused. It was the first American merchant vessel lost to Germany’s aggression during World War I. • On Jan. 29, 1922, in the middle of a film, the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C., collapses, killing 108 people and sending another 133 to the hospital. Accumulated snowfall from a blizzard collapsed the theater’s roof, which fell down on top of theatergoers. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Maynard A. Nelson May 14, 1922 - December 8, 1944

Maynard A. Nelson was born May 14, 1922, in Olivia to parents Hans & Esther Nelson. The family moved to Big Stone County in 1932 and continued their residence there. He was married to Pearl Stielow in 1941. He entered the service November 16, 1943,

and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and embarked from Fort Ord in June, 1944, for the Hawaiian Islands. On December 8, 1944, Maynard gave his life in defense of his country on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. At the time of his death he was survived by his parents; his wife Pearl; two children, Sandra and Leonard, all living in Bellingham, Washington; three brothers: Richard, Harlan & Glen of Ortonville; and two sisters: Virginia Elvecrog of Ortonville and Janet Swenson of Appleton. He was buried overseas.

January 21, 2013

Memorial services for Maynard were held at the First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville on Sunday, February 4, 1945, at 2:00pm with Reverend L. R. Hanson officiating. Nelson Street is on the west side of Appleton, one block west of Munsterman Street. This street also bears the name of two other servicemen, Kenneth W. Nelson, & Maynard A. Nelson’s brother, Richard Henry Nelson. Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.
