High   school   students   will   compete   for   $1,500   in   scholarships   via   the   Tuskegee   Airmen   Scholarship   FoundaHon   website,   and   be   announced   during   a   Black   History   Month   Science   Fair   hosted   by   Dakar   FoundaHon  for  The  Performing  Arts.     Currently,  the  success  of  Black  and  African  American  youth  in  fields  of  STEM  is  severely  disproporHonate  in   comparison  to  the  success  of  others  in  those  same  fields.  With  this  iniHaHve  it  is  our  goal  to  provide  an   opportunity  for  culturally  relevant  academic  compeHHon  that  students  would  not  otherwise  be  invited  to   experience.   Cultural   relevance   combined   with   compeHHon   as   well   as   social   and   fiscal   reward   will   create   an   environment  where  students  can  draw  on  their  cultural  frames  of  reference  to  bring  personal  relevance  to   their  projects.  This  will  allow  for  parHcipants  as  well  as  their  peers  to  more  deeply  internalize  informaHon.    “The  brain  needs  emo/on  and  meaning  to  pay  a4en/on,  making  learning  personal  and  emo/onal  for   students  can  bring  about  the  most  las/ng  lessons”.     This   concept   lies   at   the   heart   of   the   Black   History   Month   Science   Fair   iniHaHve.   In   addiHon,   we   will   distribute   scholarships   that   upliS   youth   by   demonstraHng   a   tangible   investment   of   Hme,   energy   and   finance   to   encourage   and   prepare   them   for   success   in   the   near   and   distant   futures.   We   want   the   message   to  be  clear  to  our  students:  “Your  community  is  thoroughly  invested  in  your  success.   Scholarship   winners   will   receive   Tuskegee   Airmen   Scholarship   memorabilia   to   go   along   with   their   scholarship  and  sponsors  of  winning  students  will  receive  awards  as  recogni:on  for  par:cipa:on  in  the   success  of  this  event.   The  applica:on  for  par:cipa:ng  in  the  2013  Black  History  Month  Science  Fair  will  be  available  soon.
