Fun and Safe!

Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore equestrian program is a four-tiered Western Style progressive experience. In each level, campers learn to care for, groom and ride a horse and participate in other fun camp activities. All equestrian programs follow the standards set in place by Girl Scouts of the USA, American Camp Association and Certified Horsemanship Association. Girls wear certified riding helmets, which are provided to them, while on or around the horses. Hard, smooth-soled shoes with half-inch heels and long, non-stretch pants are required for riding. Athletic tennis shoes are not appropriate. The corral may be closed for the health and safety of campers and horses in the event of extreme weather (including heat). In this case, indoor equestrian learning activities will be offered.

Michigan Caving Trip

(Prerequisite: Beginner caving skill level. Must be in grades 6-12.) Doesn’t seem like there would be limestone caves in Michigan, but there are! A preserve in Mackinac County is home to the longest known cave in Michigan. This 2,000 footlong limestone cavern, known as the Hendrie River Water Cave, formed when acidic swamp water seeped into cracks in the limestone bedrock, dissolving the limestone and widening cracks into cave passageways. The 480-acre preserve includes other caves as well as sinkholes and disappearing streams. This cave is a great beginner cave and has all the elements a beginner caver could want...water, crawling in the mud and lots of darkness! Who Can Attend?

Any girl may attend GSMISTS Summer Fun Activities as long as it’s within their grade level. Summer Fun Activities and programs are open to all girls regardless of race, color, religion or national origin. Girls must be registered as a Girl Scout to attend. If a girl is not currently registered as a Girl Scout, she may register to become one by paying the $12 annual membership fee.

Deposits and Fees

Resident Camp A deposit of $50 per session (check, credit card or money order) must accompany each registration. The registration deposit is non-refundable. The $50 deposit is applied to the entire camp fee. The remaining balance must be paid three (3) weeks before the opening day of the attendee’s session. If payment is not received by this date, your registration may be cancelled and the activity session spot may be filled with a registration on the waiting list. Late payments will only be accepted if prior arrangements have been made with the Summer Fun Registrar. Troop Camp/Family Camp/Day Camp/Twilight Camp/Summer Events The registration fee must be paid in full at time of registration. If payment is not received at time of registration, your reservation may be cancelled

25

and the activity session spot may be filled with a registration on the waiting list. Late payments will only be accepted if prior arrangements have been made with the Summer Fun Registrar.

Camperships

Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore strives to make Summer Fun opportunities available to all Girl Scouts, regardless of financial status. Camperships are offered to girls who need financial assistance to attend any Summer Fun Activity. Any Girl Scout may apply for a campership; each girl’s needs and the availability of funds determine the amount of assistance granted. If you wish to apply for a campership, complete the Campership Form (Form F) at the back of this guide.

How to Apply with a Friend

Summer Fun Activities are a great way to make new friends, yet some girls like to attend with a friend. A girl may link her registration with one other girl’s as a buddy. If your daughter chooses to attend a Summer Fun Activity with a friend, both girls must: • Be in the same program/grade grouping. • Apply for the same Summer Fun Activity & date. • Submit both applications in the same envelope.

Registration Info

Our goal is to provide a positive experience for all girls. Providing us with information about medications, special diets along with physical and mental limitations will help us provide a positive experience. Information will be kept confidential and only shared with the Activity Director, Health Care Manager and appropriate staff. Campers must be self-sufficient and able to dress, feed and shower on their own.

The deposit is non-refundable. The remainder of the Summer Fun fee (excluding the deposit) will be refunded if:

Health History/Examination

All girls and adults attending a Summer Fun Activity are required to complete a Health History each year. All girls and adults attending a Summer Fun Activity for a night or longer must have a physical exam performed within the past 24 months. The necessary forms are available at the back of this guide.

Summer Fun Activity Behavior

The staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to the Summer Fun Activities. However, GSMISTS reserves the right to send any girl home who consistently exhibits unsuitable behavior, endangers the activity community or whose actions toward others is unacceptable. The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up from the Summer Fun Activity and no refund will be given.

Cancellations/Refunds

• GSMISTS receives a written notification of a camper’s withdrawal at least two (2) weeks prior to the first day of the session. • The camper leaves camp due to illness or injury and GSMISTS receives a written request for a refund within two (2) weeks after she returns home. The refund will be pro-rated on a per diem basis. If a camper leaves a Summer Fun Activity early due to homesickness or parent request, there will be no refund.

Program Cancellation

GSMISTS reserves the right to cancel any program listed due to insufficient enrollment or other extenuating circumstances. Alternate programs or refunds will be offered. If a program is cancelled and no alternate program is available the entire fee (including the deposit) will be refunded.

Visitors

To avoid interrupting Summer Fun Activities and because sessions are short, there are no visitor days during each session.
