DECORATE COOKIES

BEAVERS

Equipment: cupcakes, shortbread or gingerbread cookies, container, food colouring, white icing, candies What to Do: Provide the Beavers with cupcakes, and shortbread or gingerbread cookies. Give each Beaver a small yogurt container with white icing in it, and provide food colouring so they can tint their icing, and make decorations on their cookies. Provide some candies and liquorice as well. After all the cookies have been admired, let the Beavers eat them. Winter mouse nests

CUBS

Equipment: a film canister for each Cub; gelatine (or dry jelly powder) with water; a wooded area or field in the winter What to do: Get your Cubs to fill their film canister halfway with gelatine (or jelly powder) and water; secure the lid. This canister now represents a small mouse. Each Cub must find a well-insulated place in the field or forest to build a nest where her "mouse" can sleep without getting too cold. Be sure that they mark the spot so they can find it again later! Check the containers in about an hour. If the water is frozen, a little mouse probably would be, too! SPUD

SCOUTS/VENTURERS

Equipment: You'll need one large, soft sponge rubber ball. How to Play: This is a game for 4 to 20 players. Each player is assigned a number, from one to the number of players in the game. One player throws the ball straight up and calls out a number. The player with that number becomes "Spud" and tries to catch the ball while the others scatter. If "Spud" catches it before it lands, "Spud" calls out another number. If the Scout catches it on a bounce, "Spud" is called and everyone must freeze. Depending on the size of the room or playing area, the Spud may move 0 to 4 paces towards another player. Spud then tries to hit the other player, who is frozen. If the player is hit, the player is awarded the letter "S." If Spud misses or the target catches the ball, Spud is awarded the letter "S". The game continues with the one who received the letter "S" throwing the ball up in the air and calling another number. Players who are hit a second time get the letter "P", third time "U" and fourth time "D." The person who gets all four (S-P-U-D) is out of the game. You may have to set a time limit on the game

Kerry Scout County Newsletter A PROJECT FOR ALL SECTIONS Part One

Trail marking and trail reading are both useful and interesting skills to learn. Start with simple trail signs when hiking and playing games, and then advance to reading and following the tracks of birds, animals, and humans. Can you interpret the stories they tell? Trail signs can be made with chalk, stones, twigs or grass. When you are finished with your signs, “erase them.
