DO question & answer Etiquette Q&A Owner Sadie Gardner of Sadie’s Couture Floral & Event Styling

Technically the “hosts” of the wedding are the people whose names are listed first on the invitation. Historically the hosts would have been the parents (most traditionally the parents of the female) of the two individuals marrying. Today, people are getting married at older ages and often bring their own finances to the table. People paying for the wedding can widely vary. I have worked with clients where their grandparents, extended relatives, non-biological parents, friends, and even siblings contribute to various elements of the wedding. Considering this, some individuals choose to list their parents first out of respect to them, but they technically may not be the ones paying the bill. Is it rude to ask for monetary gifts for your wedding?

Contact Info: Grand Forks, N.D. 701.317.3255 www.sadiesfloralnd.com

It is my strong opinion that when you are requesting the presence of your invitee that their presence is all you are requesting – not presents. Traditionally people do give gifts, but that should not be a requirement to attend a wedding. Personally, I feel it is rude to mention anything on/with an invitation mentioning anything about gifts/registries/ etc. Today, brides and grooms have access to creating personalized websites for their wedding, and it is perfectly fine to mention registries there. You can even put your website on the invitation so people can find hotel information/maps/etc. and then come across your registry information. When you get married, just like any other occasion in your life in which people may be giving you gifts, you sometimes will be given something that you do not necessarily like. Just remember, it is a gift.

What should the mother of the groom wear? First and foremost, the mothers should not wear anything that overshadows the bride. I think the best option is to defer to the bride and ask her opinion. Once she has stated that, either mother should be able to find attire that flatters them and that they are comfortable and proud to wear. It is always nice to have the two mothers talk or let each other know what the other is planning on wearing. What type of rehearsal dinner should I have? That is entirely up to you and your fiancé. A rehearsal dinner can be as casual or as grandiose as you desire. You can invite whomever you would like. Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is a time in which speeches and toasts are conducted, and sometimes it can be an emotional evening for families. That would be perhaps the one item that should be considered in determining the location of your dinner. Am I obligated to attend every single event during my friend’s jam-packed wedding weekend? This can be a touchy subject for people. I think making a decision to forgo events on a wedding weekend is entirely based on your relationship with your friend as well as his or her personality. If not attending an event is something you think would harm your friendship, then perhaps you would not want to miss it. That said, if your friend has an easy-going personality and there is an event you would rather not attend, then politely decline.

How to throw an engagement party: In today’s tech-savvy age where text messages, Facebook, Instagram, and e-mail are running our lives, it’s sometimes tough for a newly-engaged couple to take a minute to breathe and unwind. With most brides reflecting on how fast the wedding day comes and goes, along with news spreading as fast as you can blink, formally announcing and celebrating your engagement is a must! This is a chance to bring together both sides of your closest friends and family to rejoice your love, style and future life, so here are some tips to make it a party to remember!

Who Hosts While the parents of the bride traditionally will host the party, in these untraditional times anyone from extended relatives to friends of the bride and groom to even the newlyweds themselves can host. This could potentially lead to two parties: one for family and one for friends. Whatever you choose for your fete, always give parents the opportunity to host first as this is a special event in their lives as well.

When The timing of the party should be as soon after the engagement as possible while the excitement is still fresh and before the couple gets too deep into planning. Be sure to check with close family and friends on availability and get invites out about a month in advance.

daintyobsessions.com

| 23

Guests Customarily, the guest list will always include both immediate sides of the family. As it is typically an intimate gathering, always keep your closest family and friends in mind when deciding who should come. Also note that whoever is invited to the engagement party is also invited to the wedding, unless you are having a smaller wedding or a destination wedding. In this circumstance, the engagement party can be extended to whomever you want.

Gifts Gifts are not customary at an engagement party, though giving is the nature of a celebration and guests may want to bring a small present or a bottle of wine anyways. For the bride and groom, remember that an engagement party is a special act of kindness and generosity, so be prepared in the weeks after the affair to send out thank-you’s and be sure to give the host/hostess a gift of appreciation.

24 | DO ^

Theme This is where the fun starts (we went with the 2013 rainbow trend for our shoot!). Seek out professionals to help plan your soiree. Order flowers, a chef, and mail formal invites. Nothing gets people more excited to celebrate a wedding than the festivities leading up to the main event! The theme could be a five-course dinner, a weekend brunch, or even a casual cocktail party with hors d’oeuvres. If the actual wedding is more of a formal affair, maybe the engagement party can be laid back (vice versa). Always make sure the theme fits the personalities of the couple.

Tips of hosting • Be prepared for speeches & toasts • Have enough time to interact & chat with each of your guests • Share stories & photos of the couple • Keep it fun & lighthearted • Your attire should fit the theme of the party

With countless amenities and stunning scenery, Terry Peak will rejuvenate the soul and create special memories for you and your guests. Owners Rob Huber and Chris Kenzy describe their unique venue.

What inspired you to start this wedding venue? We wanted to share the unique beauty of the northern Black Hills and our beautiful vacation homes and venue for couples starting their lives together. There are very few places in the Midwest that offer the pristine mountain views like ours. What sets Terry Peak Chalets apart from other reception sites? We have two very unique attributes that set us apart: location and value. We are the highest wedding venue in South Dakota. As a matter of fact, we are the highest wedding venue east of the Rockies until the Himalayas! Tell us a little about your venue.

Our grounds include a beautiful handcrafted timber pavilion, which is anchored by an oversized

stone fireplace that sets the mood for the perfect evening amongst the night skies. Meanwhile, on the opposing side of the 1,200 square foot pavilion structure sets a serving and bar area for all of your entertaining needs. There is a tremendous amount of value when it comes to having your wedding with us. One of the biggest benefits is the potential savings when it comes to the catering, alcohol and a coordinator. We are a privately owned property and do not require that you purchase food or beverages directly through us. You have the freedom to choose if you want to bring your own food or use a catering company. You have the liberty to choose a coordinator of your choice or DIY. These options give you ultimate control and flexibility, especially if you have a tight budget! Our custom built 3,100 square foot chalets are nestled amongst the pines and aspen trees and are located at the base of Terry Peak Ski Resort. These

Coco Chanel From the bride...

Who knew in 2002, at the ripe old ages of 19 and 20, we would be so lucky to find the person we were meant to spend the rest of our lives with at a Super Bowl party? Who also knew that it would take nine ever-so-long years before there would be an engagement ring? Let me tell you, it was all worth the wait!

Our whole wedding concept was based off of the Coco Chanel quote: “Simplicity is the keynote to all true elegance.” Our vision was to keep things light, fresh and classic with a hint of vintage elegance. We chose to simply enhance the already gorgeous Calhoun Beach Club. We achieved this by using a monochromatic color scheme, incorporating texture and pattern, along with overflowing the space with an abundance of fresh ivory flowers. We incorporated subtle silver and glass accents which perfectly fit into our vision of simple elegance. We truly met our match in each other and can’t wait to see what the next chapter in our newly-joined life brings.

Elisabeth & Brett PRIVATE FAMILY FARM, RED RIVER, MINNESOTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMPLY ROSIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Falling in Love on the Farm From the bride...

My dad is a pastor and occasionally has singing groups in that we feature on our radio station, Heaven 88.7. After a concert at our church with some singers from New Jersey, we went to eat. They figured out that I was a photographer living in a fixerupper and was “alone and single.” Wanting to introduce me to someone, they mentioned Brett and named off his interests while I laughed at them for thinking we’d be good together. I’d never liked being set up with someone and little did they know that this girl only went outside to do photo shoots. The rest of my time was spent inside on the computer and doing little house projects. Brett was all about the outdoors: Hunting, fishing, dirt biking, off-roading, you name it…

“FOR GUEST FAVORS, WE BOUGHT BAGS OF FARM ANIMALS FROM A TOY STORE AND SPRAY-PAINTED ALL OF THEM GOLD.” ^ Elisabeth

When my new friends returned home, they convinced Brett to contact me. It started slow, but before I knew it I was falling in love with a boy I had never met and who lived over 1,000 miles away. After a few months he finally flew to my city, we saw each other in person, and thankfully he didn’t run the other way! Later he moved from New Jersey to be closer, we fell more in love, our families loved each other, he proposed, and the rest is history. I had always known I wanted to be married at the farm I grew up on, and it was a perfect choice. We knew a small family wedding was what we wanted. My dad walked me down the aisle and also officiated the ceremony. Being a photographer myself, I knew the importance of details. I wanted to use everything I could from digging through the farm building to plan the most affordable, vintage and creative wedding. We had some crazy DIY plan for just about everything. Family and friends helped with food, beverages and dÊcor. We spent many hours in the barn loft creating and completing projects.

DO honeymoon destinations

Honeymoon Destinations

s Tropical

by Tracy Kirby Imagine: The rings are on. Vows have been proclaimed. Cake was cut. You just threw the party of the decade (correction, century) for your closest family and friends. You’re married. What now? Amidst the countless details in planning your wedding, it is hard to look beyond that one magical day. So, lucky for us, local travel agents can help you with the next important occasion after the “I do’s:” The honeymoon. Here, travel experts share the latest and greatest newlywed destinations.

SAINT LUCIA

RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

This dazzling island located in the eastern Caribbean Sea promises starry skies, crystal waters, flawless natural landscape, and memories to last a lifetime of marriage.

This district on Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico kisses the Caribbean Sea and is bliss for those seeking warm weather, beaches and relaxation.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Even before ABC’s The Bachelor featured Saint Lucia in all its romantic grandeur, honeymooners have - and continue to travel - to Saint Lucia for its tropical weather, beaches, staggering beauty, and diverse activities.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: According to Tracy Heezen at Travel Partners in Sioux Falls, S.D., honeymooners are finding the Riviera Maya to be especially appealing today due to the ease of getting there and the deep discounts available. “Mexico is extremely cost effective right now,” Tracy said. “Honeymooners are finding they can get a lot for their money here.”

What to Do: Whether you and your honey are seeking relaxation or adventure, Saint Lucia delivers in superior form. With all its diverse natural wonders, you can snorkel, scuba dive, take a romantic boat ride, relax, or even hike around a volcano.

Where to Go/Stay: For a relaxing, romantic, and pampering stay, Tracy recommends El Dorado Royale, a spa resort located just 25

minutes south of Cancun International Airport. El Dorado Royale is an all-inclusive, adults-only resort offering private jacuzzis, 13 pools and seven restaurants. What to Do: If you can peel yourselves away from the idyllic resort, the area offers endless activities. “You can tour ancient ruins, snorkel, scuba dive or just relax at the beach,” said Tracy. If you are brave, maybe sample the region’s spicy nightlife! (Note: While resort areas are largely safe, always be aware of your surroundings!)

Where to Go/Stay: Kristina Wolfe with travel agency Travel Leaders in Sioux Falls, S.D. recommends staying at any of Sandals all-inclusive resorts located in Saint Lucia. “Sandals is perfect for honeymooners,” Kristina

said. “The resorts are extremely romantic and offer frequent opportunities for savings and promotions. For example, you can enroll into the Sandals select program and immediately earn money toward your next Sandals stay.”

VAIL, COLORADO

COSTA RICA

Romance fills the thin air in Vail, Colo. as the whimsical, cobblestone-laden streets of Vail Village whisks you worlds away. In winter, watch the snow dance down with your sweetheart while cuddling around a fireplace, and in the warmer months experience all the colorful glory of the Rocky Mountains together.

Costa Rica is quickly becoming a hotbed for honeymooners and vacationers from around the globe. Its accessible location in Central America sandwiched by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea seduces travelers with both beach and eco-adventures.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: According to Kristina, many newlyweds choose Vail based on its proximity and affordability. “There are so many great deals flying into Denver,” Kristina said. “Once you’re there, you can rent a car and then Vail is only 90 minutes away.” Where to Go/Stay: For the ultimate romantic accommodations, Kristina recommends staying at Vail’s Four Seasons Hotel. “The Four Seasons has

outstanding service,” Kristina said. “Some of their rooms and private residences even come with such amenities as their own fireplaces or hot tub.” What to do: Known as North America’s top ski resort, Vail is bustling in the wintertime with countless ski options for you and your spouse. Regardless of the season you visit in, do not miss exploring cozy Vail and Lionshead Village with world-class shopping and dining year-round.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: “This is a fairly newer honeymoon destination,” Tracy said. “Newlyweds are going there because it is a clean, affordable adventurous place.” The small country has - among countless other things rainforests, beaches and volcanoes providing for relaxation mixed with thrilling adventure. Where to Go/Stay: For unsurpassed ease and service, Tracy recommends the allinclusive Hilton Papagayo Resort and Spa. Nestled on the Pacific Ocean, you

can choose from unique bungalows or guest rooms, several dining options, and a spa menu to melt all your cares away. What to Do: Water activities are a given with Costa Rica, which touches two bodies of water, but venture out into the rainforests for a ziplining experience you will never forget! Take a tour to Arenal Volcano (Costa Rica’s most active volcano until 2010) and hike hand-in-hand in the country’s lush jungles, viewing diverse wildlife along the way.

Honeymoon Destinations

s VENICE, ITALY

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA

Unlike any city in the world, the main part of Venice sits on over 100 tiny islands split by waterway canals. The charisma of the city and the architecture alone will leave a lifelong memory etched in your marital journey.

Jet off to this sunny paradise, indulge in each other’s company, show off that wedding-dress-ready body, and never have to use your passport!

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: A medieval city emanating a bewitching glamour, Venice is a perfect destination for newlyweds seeking an extended vacation. Kristina suggests using Venice as a launching point for other adventures. “You could start in Venice and then take a highspeed train to Rome or Tuscany.” Where to Go/Stay: Kristina advises lodging at the Westin Europa and

Regina for a superior stay. Boasting its own private entrance on the Grand Canal with gondolas galore, it is known for its unrivaled service. What to Do: Wander down to Piazza San Marco and explore Palazzo Ducale all while sampling the exquisite Venetian cuisine. Take a tour of the city, shop the eclectic and enchanting boutiques, and revel in the fact that you are in love in one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: “A lot of newlyweds don’t have a lot of time for a long vacation,” Tracy said. “ So, St. Petersburg is a perfect option. It’s an easy flight from anywhere in the United States so you can really maximize your time together.” Where to Go/Stay: For relaxation and pampering, Tracy advocates a stay at Tradewinds Resort Island Grand. This beachfront property recently underwent a $20 million renovation project. The result is a pristine, romantic haven for you and your freshly vowed spouse.

What to Do: St. Peteresburg is located on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay so beach and water activities are the norm. But, when you have used up all your sunscreen and want to venture away from the beach, tap into both of your carefree childlike imaginations and spend a day visiting some of the world’s most famous theme parks only a short drive away: Universal Studios, Disney World, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, and more. Afterall, nothing spells romance like a thrilling roller coaster!

The art of calligraphy is a visual gift related to writing. This age-old practice is one of aesthetic evolution where one carefully, yet fluidly inscribes and designs to fine art pieces. Calligraphy continues to exquisitely entertain wedding invitations, however, incorporating this expressive work of art into other elements of your day will help create a deep sentiment of love.

Ashley & Tom IOWA STATE MEMORIAL UNION, AMES, IOWA PHOTOGRAPHY BY M. THREE STUDIO

From the bride...

For the Love of Vera

Tom and I met on a blind date in New York City. My sister and his cousin worked at the same law firm in Washington, D.C. and they decided to set us up. A few e-mails were exchanged about where to meet and that was it – no photos. Tom didn’t seem to be worried about recognizing each other. He told me he’d be wearing a blue sweater and had just gotten a haircut (as if I knew what his hair looked like before). On the night of the date I called my dad, nervous about what I had agreed to, and he told me, “Ash, just remember, most blind dates don’t work out.” As he mentioned in his father of the bride speech, he’s never been so wrong about something in his life! Tom and I hit it off right away, and we were officially a couple in less than a month.

Tom and I knew that we wanted to bring the style of New York to our Iowa wedding. With countless hours spent perusing wedding blogs and magazines for inspiration, I decided to create a romantic mood with vintage touches. We wanted our wedding day to be a unique experience for the Iowa guests while surprising all of the East Coast guests with a laid back, but elegant affair. The Iowa State Memorial Union was the perfect backdrop to make that vision come to life. Planning from halfway across the country, I found that having early meetings with my vendors to make mock-ups of what the actual day-of flowers and tables would look like was essential in assuring my vision was executed perfectly.

I have a design degree and work in fashion, so it was important to me to have a lot of my own touches throughout our day. Thanks to Gmail, I still had Tom’s first e-mail to me planning our blind date (and my response), which I printed on the back of the menus. My dress hunt took me to 14 different stores in NYC. I thought I had found “the one” several times until I ended my search at Vera Wang. I found my dress at her fall 2011 trunk show just days after it was on the runway and was the first to purchase the dress. It was everything I could have dreamed for — unique, romantic, full of texture and the perfect color. Thanks to our friends and family, our wedding day was full of love and was incredibly perfect.

Rachael & Jeff PRIVATE FAMILY RESIDENCE, JACKSON, WYOMING PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATY GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY

Amidst the Beauty of the Teton Range From the bride...

Jeff and I met serendipitously at a Colorado Rockies game in Denver, Colo. I was born and raised in Colorado and Jeff is originally from Florida and is a practicing attorney. Those of us from the West can sense who is from the East Coast and combined with his chosen profession, Jeff can be a handful. Well I guess I was in the mood to be his badgered witness that night. Jeff peppered me with questions (most were intrusive) and I responded as politely as possible. Jeff has since informed me that he wanted to talk to me but couldn’t think of anything else to say. And I thought he was just confident.

72 | DO ^

daintyobsessions.com | 3

Because I am a pilot and Jeff was far from home, we discussed travel. I realize that most people in our generation enjoy traveling, but the way people travel can be quite different. Jeff and I are both drawn to the substructure: Why visit the castle when you can visit the maid’s quarters? Why eat at the restaurant when you can see the farm? That interest carried over to our wedding. We vacationed in Jackson, Wyo. and knew the Tetons were the perfect backdrop for our wedding. Jeff and I did not intend for the wedding to be green or sustainable or organic - we don’t even know the difference, but we knew that it would have to be uncontrived. With the beautiful mountain range, an outdoor ceremony and outdoor reception were a non-negotiable element that, in the end, did most of the work for us. We wanted to truly share the moment with our guests, and we therefore chose to keep our wedding small and invited only our immediate family. We went on to choose natural materials common to our location. Wildflowers and wood, burlap and glass, and leather and copper are all elements that would support and complement the Western feel.

Love Sophisticated Elegance Soft Feminine Organic Intimate Downtown Loft Timeless C r e a m y Delicate Classic Hint of Old Charm Downtown Loft, Sioux Falls, South Dakota Photography: Megan Pomeroy Photography Styling: RSVP Event Planning + Style

While backyard, vintage and rustic themes are deep-rooted here in the Midwest, 2013 weddings are beginning to see a return to formality. Staged in a formerly industrial space turned artsy loft overlooking downtown Sioux Falls, S.D., our creative direction began here. We shaped an intimate setting with the juxtaposition of exposed brick, sophisticated elements and organic beauty. Emily Hagen of RSVP Event Planning + Style, along with assistant Tracy Kirby, took our gold and navy color palette and conjured a creamy and feminine sweetheart table with the perfect mix of refined old charm and glamorous flair.

The oh-so-amazing ladies of Meredith & Bridget’s Flower Shop dressed the affair primarily with olive branches, Ivy California Bush Berries, White Veronica and White Lisianthus. A major catering trend this year is treating your guests to plated dinners. With food being what brings families together, serving an exquisite plated entrée atop gold chargers makes your wedding the talk of conversations long after the celebration. Chef Carter Weiland of Parker’s Bistro & Icon Event Hall prepared not only visually stunning, but appetite pleasing dishes. Adding depth, color and straying from the ordinary, Weiland tossed the customary house greens into a beet and mozzarella croquette napoleon. Raising the bar on the standard chicken option, Weiland followed with a pan-roasted, cumin-dusted thigh with fingerling potatoes and sautéed wild mushrooms. Always leaving room for dessert, Kari Popham of Sugar’s Baked Goods & Sweet Treats crafted a confectionary table complete with blueberry tarts, gold-dusted truffle balls and two statement cakes; a clean and modern fondant creation with a pop of gold adorned with olive branches, and another with a more off-the-cuff composition with rolled white chocolate sides topped with blueberries.

Kayla & Jason THE SHELDON MUSEUM OF ART + THE LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS, LINCOLN, NEBRASKA PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEOFF JOHNSON

Under the Big Top From the bride...

Being born and raised in the capitol of Nebraska, most anyone from here could agree that Lincoln is a small/big city (you know someone who knows someone you know). That is why it is so funny that Jason and I did not meet until college while attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Go Huskers!)...I guess you might say that it was all about the timing? Jason and I started out as friends and instantly connected. I have always been a bit quirky and theatrical, and that is why I knew that this guy and I were truly one of a kind together when I spontaneously started reenacting a scene from one of my favorite musicals for some friends and Jason quickly added in his very own laser lighting backdrop for me. We made for one spectacular show together!

“OUR WEDDING DAY WAS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR, AND NOT ONLY DO I HAVE THE AMAZING VENDORS TO THANK FOR MAKING OUR VISION COME TRUE, BUT OUR MOMS JOAN AND ANGIE WERE TRULY THERE TO HELP US EVERY STEP OF THE WAY AND SHOWER US WITH THEIR UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.” ^ Jason + Kayla

This is when I got the idea to add a touch of the “Big Top into our special day. Growing up in Nebraska, there is nothing more exciting for a child than when the Nebraska State Fair opens its doors. The freshly-squeezed lemonade, apples dipped in caramel, the exciting variety of snow cone flavors, the cotton candy, the smell of funnel cake lingering in the air, the vintage circus games, enchanting lights, the costumes, the mystery of what was waiting for us just behind the shiny tents, everything was magical. Jason and I wanted our wedding day to be a day that our friends and family could escape their everyday life and wander into another world. We wanted our guests to have the time of their lives and to feel like they were not only guests, but they were part of the show!

Tom + Lynn Mirabella The honeymoon: Island of Moorea, French Polynesia MARRIED: AUGUST 22, 2009

The ultimate beach bum honeymoon: snorkeling warm turquoise waters, breakfast delivered via canoes, peacefully sleeping in over-the-water bungalows, and swimming amongst tropical fish. Some would call this a little piece of heaven. French Polynesia, better known by its main island of Tahiti, is comprised of 118 intimate islands that each boast romantic resorts, immaculate beaches and an ecological lagoon with breathtaking views like no place else. This is exactly what honeymooners Tom and Lynn Mirabella dreamed of experiencing. “We wanted to visit a remote and relaxing location and just enjoy ourselves,” Lynn described.

Photos: Courtesy of Lynn Mirabella.

Staying six nights on the island of Moorea, Tom and Lynn made sure to book their excursions when they arrived. “We found that there were many more activities to choose from when booking at the Pearl Resort and Spa that were not available when booking our trip prior,” said the couple. Each morning the newlyweds looked forward to eating a buffet style breakfast, which was a great way to start their day. With a large variety of delicious food on the island, the newlyweds visited

local markets for lunch, relaxed with room service for a night, and tried everything from Chinese to French cuisines. Aside from relaxing and swimming the warm waters, the couple took advantage of the resorts free use of kayaks and snorkeling gear. “The island offered so many activities that we didn’t have time for all of them,” Tom said. A few of their favorites included the Moorea Dolphin Center where they swam among dolphins. “This was an awesome experience,” Lynn said. “Something else we really enjoyed was the local mountain excursion. The tour took us up to the Island Mountains where we picked fresh fruit. It was the best fruit we’ve ever had, it almost tasted like candy.” Ending their tour at the top of Belvedere Mountain, the couple soaked in beautiful ocean views and an exotic experience of a lifetime.

DO happily married now

Jeff and Tammy Lewis Meet happily married couple Jeff and Tammy Lewis. With 36 years of marriage under their belts, they tell all on being married by 19, dealing with large families, and how they maintain happiness now.

then

Tammy: We met in high school

Tammy: Destination wedding!

while we were both working at a restaurant in the Holiday Inn. Jeff asked me to his school’s homecoming.

Our daughter, Amy, got married in Mexico and it was fantastic. We had a great vacation and she had a beautiful backdrop for her wedding.

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?

What makes your marriage successful?

Jeff: We married at 19 and came

Tammy: We have a lot in common.

from large families. We were so used to coming from really hectic households full of people and pets that only living with one person made the first year really easy.

Jeff: We do still have our own

What is the most memorable wedding moment?

Tammy: I remember that my mom and I had terrible headaches! Also, my mom made all of the food (we had around 400 guests) and she was very worried that there wasn’t going to be enough.

Jeff: I danced so much and so hard at the reception that my feet swelled horribly. I didn’t bring regular shoes with me for the next day, and in the morning my feet wouldn’t fit into the dress shoes! What is the craziest wedding moment?

Jeff: We had some wild guests! One of our guests was dancing and they slipped, fell into a table and knocked everything over. ELIM LUTHERAN CHURCH, FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA APRIL 1ST, 1977

current planning couples?

What’s your biggest advice to

We both come from large families and we enjoy doing the same things. hobbies and things we like to do separate from each other, and we allow each other to enjoy these times as well. How do you deal with disagreements?

Jeff: We discuss the issue and make sure to work through it. We pick our battles and never raise our voices to each other or call each other names. That doesn’t solve anything. Do you have children? If so, how does that change a marriage?

Jeff: We have three children: Katie, Amy and Sam. It does change things but it makes you realize that you’re in it together and it’s a team effort. Each person needs to step up and help with everything. There were no traditional wife or husband roles in our family. For example, while Tammy worked evenings, I would get home from work and take care of the kids, cook and do laundry. You both do what you need to do to keep everything together.

Top 3 things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married? • If you both want to have children. If so, do you have similar values on how to raise them? • Finances and how to handle them.

120 | DO ^

• A strong trust with each other. If your spouse goes out with friends one night or goes hunting on the other side of the state, you shouldn’t have to worry about what they are doing or who they‘re with. You need to be able to have full trust in them.
