Wants security challenges curtailed

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), made up of the governors of 36 states of the federation, has said that the group is yet to take a clear position on the issue of establishing state police in the country. Chairman of NGF and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, disclosed this on Friday while briefing State House correspondents alongside his colleagues from Ebonyi, David Umahi; Kebbi, Atiku Bagudu; Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa; Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu; Plateau, Simon Lalong; and Borno, Babagana Zulum, after a closed doors security meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the governors, the meeting was at the instance of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and had to do with the security situation in the country. The governors said: “There are governors and states where their experience does not necessarily learn itself to more evolved policing to the states. Governor Fayemi said: “There are also states where there are agitations for it, there are governors who have the views that that will work better in such states. And of course, there are the economic issues relating to that. So do we have the capacity at the state level to fund state policing? Those are all issues that will come in play when we get to the national economic council

meeting that has been called.” “We felt as chief security officers in our various states that we should keep Mr. President abreast with what is happening especially on the issues of kidnapping, banditry, farmers/herders crisis, militancy, armed robbery and cultism. We want them to be addressed. “We want to see how we can assist Mr. President to also look at the economic challenges, tackling the issue of proceeds of corruption, and the criminal justice system in the country. “So we discussed extensively all of these issues and looked at the various ways that we felt as governors we could assist Mr. President as the commander-inchief to curb these issues. Of course we were able to in the first instance look at the nexus between of our economic challenges and the security challenges as well and the importance of tackling the causes of crime not just crime on its own. “We thanked the president for what has done so far and in a range of our states; we have received multiple support be it bailout funds to address salaries challenges. If that has not been dealt with, the situation would probably have been worse. Support in terms of national food security committee, support on flooding, support in the north east for insurgency and related activities. But these problems are proliferating and we need to nip them in the bud as field commanders of Mr. President.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

“We also looked at the criminal justice system that appears to give some room for impunity. When people commit crimes and they are not punished effectively in accordance with the statutes, it then creates an opportunity for replicating such crimes. “Of course, Mr. President was also equally concerned about that. He made it clear to us that we all knew that he campaigned on the basis of security, economy and accountability and these things are still the most germane issues on his agenda and that he will also work with us to address questions of intelligence, of broadening community policing, of ensuring interservice coordination among the various security agencies, of strengthening the criminal justice system, of working with our state’s innovatively on mechanism for addressing these issues, be it security trust fund that brings the public and the private players together in order to fund security and increase the

resources available to security institutions.” Fayemi said that the governors have not taken a decision on the issue of state police because situations vary at states level. However, he said that the issue would be discussed when the governors meet at the upcoming National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo. When asked if the governors were satisfied with how the Federal Government utilised the $1 billion taken from the excess crude account to address security, the governors said they were not the right body to speak on it, adding that they would look into how the fund was expended. President Buhari met with the governors of the 36 states and Security Chiefs. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari were also in attendance. The governors in attendance included that of Adamawa,

and Raypower FM Radio stations- that were shut down by the Federal Government on Thursday. The Court also ordered the Federal Ministry of Information and Attorney General of the Federation to appear before it on June 13, to show cause why they should not be stopped from interfering with the operations of Daar Communication Plc. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the Federal Government regulating agency, had on Thursday evening suspended the licence of Daar Communications Plc, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power till further notice. Director-General of NBC, Modibbo Kawu, who announced the shutdown, said the action was taken for failure of the TV and radio stations to abide by the broadcasting code. Daar Communication Plc, represented by its founder, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, in a ex-parte motion which has the Federal Ministry of Information and the Attorney General of the Federation as defendants, prayed the court to order the maintenance of status quo ante bellum as at 30th May, this year, pending the hearing and determination of its suit challenging the closure of its broadcast stations. The company also prayed the court to restrain the defendants from blocking and/or interfering with the air waves of Daar Communication Plc in any way and manner howsoever, in its broadcast and airing of news, views, documentaries, or any other legitimate broadcast material that is usually associated with television, radio or social media broadcast pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed along with the ex-parte application. The plaintiff also prayed the court to restrain the defendants from invading or closing down the premises of Daar Communication, its operations

or broadcast services, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed along with this application. Alternatively, the plaintiff prayed for an order for maintenance of status quo ante bellum, as at May 30, 2019, pending the hearing and final determination of the motion on notice filed along with the exparte application. But, the trial Court Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his ruling, after he had perused the affidavit in support of the ex-parte motion deposed to by one Kelly Elisha and heard from plaintiff counsel, Benson Igbanoi, held that he will not grant prayers one and two of the plaintiff without hearing from other parties. “I have noted the eight grounds upon which the exparte application was hinged upon, application of this nature must be considered judicially and judiciously, that, I have done. “I hereby ordered that parties shall maintain status quo ante bellum as at May 30, 2019 pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed in this case”, Justice Inyang stated and ordered the defendants to appear before the court on June 13, 2019 to show cause why they should not be stopped from interfering with the operations of Daar Communication Plc. The plaintiff, Daar Communication Plc, is the first privately owned Independent Broadcasting Organisation in Nigeria, having been licenced to broadcast on television and radio since 1996 and currently, operating the African Independent Television (AIT), Raypower 100.5 FM, Faji FM and Darsat stations. Other grounds include tha “The Plaintiff/Applicant has in the best tenets and tradition of broadcast and in compliance with section 22 of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as altered, carried out its duties legally, legitimately, morally and nationalistically, in informing, educating and

entertaining Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora on sundry matters, which activities have energized and contributed to national development and also nurtured, widened, deepened and strengthened democracy, rule of law, human rights and anti-corruption in Nigeria. “Since the emergence of the present government, the Plaintiff /Applicant has been under its close surveillance and undue monitoring of its operations by the present government which wrongly believes that the Plaintiff/Applicant had been too supportive of the immediate past government. “That sometimes on 16th April, 2019, agents of the Federal Government represented by the 1st Defendant, in a Gestapo- like- manner, attacked and pulled down the two buildings and gates leading to the Plaintiff/Applicant’s operational Headquarters which damage and destruction run into hundreds of millions of naira. “The Defendants and their agents have been writing series of letters with which they harassed and intimidated the Plaintiff over the contents of their broadcast, particularly of late, concerning its social media segment of its morning flagship broadcast show called KAAKAKI (the African Voice). “Credible information just reaching the Plaintiff has it that the Defendants have concluded plans to invade and shut down the premises of the Plaintiff and/ or part thereof, in the next few days. “Shutting down the broadcast services of the Plaintiff will deny majority of Nigerians access to information which is constitutionally guaranteed and its teaming workers of their means of livelihood. “That it is extremely urgent to hear and grant these prayers pending the hearing of the motion on notice, so as prevent irreparable damage which cannot be compensated for on monetary terms from being inflicted on the Plaintiff/ Applicant”.

Senate Presidency: Lawan launches agenda, Female participation in NASS reiterates independence of legislature remains low at 5.8 %, says NBS Gaya backs Lawan, insists on running for Deputy Senate President post

Tunde Opalana, Abuja Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, on Friday, consolidated his campaign for the position of Senate President with the launch of proposed legislative agenda titled “A National Assembly That Works for Nigeria”. He anchored the agenda on three major vision of improving institutional capacity and capabilities of the Senate for effective performance; legislative Interventions for good governance and other areas of concern which include independence of the legislature. Lawan emphasised the need to develop strategies which will build public confidence in the Senate through public engagement, stressing that the public perception of the role, value and contributions of the Senate to nation building needs to improve. While recognising the principle of separation of powers, he stressed the need for collaboration and cooperation with other arms of government to deliver on legislative goals for improved governance of the country. According to Lawan, the agenda has two components of involving the legislative reforms to improve performance of the Senate and focusing on engaging with other arms of government to achieve robust

legislative Interventions, institutional reforms and national development. Objectives of the agenda, he said, including repositioning the Senate to carry out its constitutional duties of legislation, oversight and representation in an open and transparent manner, taking legislative action to recover improve national economic conditions, public finance management and National security architecture and to reduce poverty, unemployment and infrastructure deficits. He promised that the Senate under his leadership will be a united institution which will ensure inclusiveness, justice, fair play and respect for all political parties represented in the Senate. In pursuit of these objectives, Lawan said “the 9th Senate will work with the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to pass bills that support government reforms efforts”. The agenda unveiling programme was attended by APC candidates for House of Representatives Speakership position, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and his proposed deputy, Ahmed Idris Wasse and impressive number of elected Senators of the APC and five PDP elected senators. In another development, Senator Kabiru Gaya, representing Kano South, gunning for the position of Deputy

Lawan Senate President, has thrown his weight behind the candidacy of Lawan. Addressing the press at the unveiling event, he insisted that the APC has not zoned the Deputy Senate President position and that he is qualified to contest the position. He disproved the argument that the Deputy Senate President position should not go to his North West zone, having zoned Senate Presidency to North East. However, the former governor of Kano State said he will be willing to abide by the party’s decision should Deputy Senate Presidency be zoned to any other zone.

I’ve lost weight in one week as Lagos governor – Sanwo-Olu Says governing Lagos not a tea party

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that governing a cosmopolitan state like Lagos is not a tea party, addint that he has lost weight in one week upon assumption of office. Sanwo-Olu took oath of office on May 29, 2019 just a week and some days ago. The governor said this on Friday while speaking to State House correspondents after the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) met with President Muhammadu Buhari on security issues at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. When asked about his experience as governor in the last one week, he said: “The experience is real, it got to show that the challenges are real, they are there, it’s not a tea party. “You don’t sleep and wake up and the traffic has gone down, you don’t sleep and wake up and there is no rain and that you’ve resolved Apapa gridlock, it’s real. So it’s something that has psychologically prepared one for being awake. So the best thing to do is to ensure that you are not about looking for what the other person did but it’s for Lagosians to seeing you do what you said you are going to do for them. “You don’t do it from the office, you

have to do it from the road, you have to do it so that people will see and truly know that you mean business. “I dare say that I have lost weight and probably I will lose a little bit more but I think it’s what the job entails and it is to also ensure that you have the right team of people that would also support you. “So when as a leader you show that leadership support, then the message itself will trickle down and trickle down very well and that is why we have to take very bold ideas and you’re going to see a lot.” Speaking on what his administration would do to curtail the security challenges in Lagos, the governor said that security was everybody’s businesses. “But as a governor, one also has a major responsibility to ensure that as number one security officer of the state, security of lives and properties is also paramount as the chief executive officer of a state. Beyond the fact that everybody has some responsibilities or the other, just as a father has his kids, a wife has her children as managing director has to his staff, so the state Governor also has to the entire state. “So, it’s a work in progress for us as a state and for me in particular, it’s something that I take very seriously. We are not just to be mouthing it but we

make sure that we put resources in place and strategies. “We’ve been talking about domesticating and pushing part of the initiatives around security trust fund that we’ve done.” “We will continue to engage, and continue to identify what are the sources, what are the underlining issues that is bringing about it. Are they economic, are they more than that, so that we will also attack the root cause. “It is something that for us as a government that is looking for investors; we certainly must continue to be in a position where we can give confidence to all our investors that it’s a safe haven to come and invest. “So for me, it’s important, it’s paramount and I thank Mr. President for calling us to have this conversation,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said. On the role of Lagos State in the region security cooperation by the South West governors, Sanwo-Olu said: “It’s still work in progress and we have a South West leader who I am sure has also addressed the press on the matter. “I don’t want to be at the risk of preempting what that body will do, let us wait for them to come up with a proper action plan at the regional level and let’s see what solution it will come with.”

101-yr-old man released from Enugu prison, hospitalised Moses Oyediran, Enugu A 101-year-old man, Pa Celestine Egboluche, who has been in prison custody since 2000, was on Thursday released and immediately taken into a hospital in Enugu. The Centenarian, who was jailed alongside his only son, Paul Egboluche, 41, regained his freedom from Enugu maximum prison following a state pardon by the former Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha. His son, however, was not included in the pardon. Pa Celestine, from Amachalla-Owerri,

Akokwa, Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State, was however, rushed to an Enugu based hospital - St Daniel - by a non-governmental organisation, Global Society for Anti-Corruptoon, GSAC, which championed his pardon from prison. His pardon was made possible because of deteriorating health. It was gathered that the centenarian, who was hospitalised shortly after his release, will have to suffer another trauma because his house in the village was demolished by those who accused him and his son of allegedly plotting the kidnap and the killing of one of their relations, Cyril Igbokwe.

Regional director, GSAC, South East and South South, Mrs. Amaka Nweke, has pleaded with governments, organisations and good spirited Nigerians to come to the aid of the dying centenarian so that he would be rehabilitated. Nweke also pleaded that his only son should also be granted pardon to look after his father. “We are grateful to God and the government for granting his release from prison. We are however appealing to all and sundry to come to the aid of the old man so that he would be rehabilitated because his house in the village was demolished by the villagers.

For life expectancy at birth, the report said it depicted the average number of years a newborn child was expected to live given the current levels of mortality in a country. In 2016, it said life expectancy for males was 47 years, 51 years for female and 49 years for both. On education, the report said the literacy rate among female age 15 to 24 years interviewed was 59.3 per cent and 70.9 per cent for their male counterpart in 2016. Available data from the Federal Ministry of Education shows that enrolment rate of school-aged girls in primary education was 48.6 per cent in 2014. It said the figure decreased to 47.4 per cent in 2015 and slightly increased to 47.5 per cent in 2016. In addition, it said the completion rate for girls in primary, junior and senior secondary school in 2016 were 64.8 per cent, 38.9 per cent and 28.7 per cent. PDP govs dare FG to publish Short News Appeal Court dismisses suit challenging states diverting LG funds Declare readiness to pay N30, 000 minimum wage

Condemn repression of media, commend judiciary Tunde Opalana, Abuja Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared that no PDP governor is involved in the alleged diversion of funds meant for local government administration in the country. While condemning the suppression of local governments through fund diversion, the governors challenged the federal government to publish names of state governors found culpable. This was part of the resolutions made at the first post -inauguration meeting of the PDP Governors Forum held at the Bayelsa state Governor’s Lodge in Abuja Thursday night. Reading the communiqué of the marathon meeting in the early hours of Friday, Bayelsa state Governor, Seriake Dickson, who is the chairman of the forum said the PDP governors condemned the issue of local government funds diversion in strong term. He said that “we dealt with the allegation of alleged diversion of local government funds by state governments. And we condemned it in very strong terms. We as governors on the platform of the PDP want to make it clear that no PDP governor is involved in this allegation of diverting local government funds for

whatever purpose. “In our case, the reverse is the case. It is the state governments that have been supporting and subsidizing funding for the local governments. So, we call on the federal government and the agency in charge to name the state governments and tell us the date and the people who were in -charge as the time when this diversion took place.” The governors also at the meeting declared their readiness to implement and pay the new N30, 000 minimum wage to workers in their states while calling on the federal government to review the current revenue sharing formula. He said the PDP governors want to do so, “to alleviate the plight of the long suffering Nigerian workers who have been under -paid for long. And the workers who are currently groaning in economic hardship as a result of what has gone wrong with the economy since the APC government took over. “Therefore, we call on the federal government to expedite the process of presenting a bill to that effect. And also we call for a review of the revenue sharing formula.” Consequent upon the suspension of the operating license of AIT and Raypower FM radio stations by the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday, the governors condemned the act and urged the federal

government to re-open the stations. “The forum notes the shocking intolerance and act of repression against the media by the federal government. This evening, as you are aware DAAR Communications we understand has been closed down. And our position is that due process must be followed. “If there are any allegations of infraction, then due processes of the law should take place. Because when you shut down a news outlet, when you harass and intimidate journalists, then you are shutting down Nigerians from speaking their minds. And in democracy, freedom of expression is a cardinal component. “So, we condemn what has taken place and we urge the federal government and its agency to forthwith, do what is right. That is re-opening the company and follow the due process of the law,” the communiqué said. They also commended the judiciary for exhibiting uncommon courage and for professionally discharging their responsibilities under the constitution to adjudicate disputes, adding that they are doing so under a very difficult time. The governors expressed deep concern over the politicization of the security apparatus in every state by the federal government and its agencies, essentially in the states not controlled by the ruling APC.

Gov. Zulum’s election

The Court of Appeal Jos Division on Friday dismissed an appeal challenging the nomination of Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Alhaji Idris Mamman-Gatumbwa had filed a petition before Justice U. Onyemenam-led justices of the appellate court seeking it to upturn the judgment of a Federal High Court which okayed his (Zulum) nomination as Borno state APC governorship candidate for the 2019 general elections. Justice Onyemenam, while delivering judgment of the Appeal Court, dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit. “The appeal filed before this appellate by Alhaji Idris MammanGatumbwa, is statute barred and of no effect as it is lacking in merit. “Looking at the nature of the case, the decision of the lower court is therefore, upheld and the appeal is hereby dismissed for lack of merit,” Onyemenam declared. The judge held that the case was filed before the lower court after the statutory 14 days grace as stipulated by the Electoral Act. It would be recalled that Justice Jude Dakat of the Federal High Court, Maiduguri had dismissed the petition of the appellant on the basis that it lacks merit. Justice Dakat had in that judgment held that the petitions lacks merit on the grounds that it was filed out of the 14 days grace to challenge any discrepancy during party primaries as stipulated by the Electoral Act. Consequently, counsel for the appellant, Ibrahim Bawa (SAN) had approached the appellate court to upturn the judgment of the lower court, praying it to look into the merit of the case and order the party to do the needful in accordance with the law. He further prayed the court to upturn the decision of the lower court which failed to look at the merit of the case, but dismissed it, asserting that the lower court was wrong to declare that “we were out of the 14 days.” Bawa went pointed out that Section 87 of the Electoral Act holds that primaries not properly conducted should be nullified and prayed the appellate court to allow the appeal and rule in favour of his client.

that took over from him plunged the state into debts. He described Dickson as one of the most fortunate governors to have governed the state because he governed the state in an era the state received the highest allocation from the federation account, adding that “ but yet, the state is indebted to the sum of N130 billion it has not been able to service. “As long as we know, the Dickson led administration took a loan of N50 billion. A loan he claimed he has used to build an airport for the state. The ironic thing about that loan is that it is expected to be serviced with a N32 billion interest fee making the total sum of the loan N82 billion. Where does that happen? “We still have the case of a 66 million Euros he took from the Bank of Poland in 2013 to build a maritime university in the state. I am not sure there is any maritime university in this state. In fact, the only maritime university we have in the South-South of the country is the one at Okerenkoko, Delta state. “So, these are the obvious scams. Rather, than pay attention to their own short

-comings, they have resorted to casting aspersions, focusing on Sylva, who was governor of this state almost eight years ago. “Just yesterday, the Debt Management Office made a publication indicating that Bayelsa state is the seventh most indebted state in Nigeria. It explained that the state is indebted to the sum of N130 billion. That goes to show how much Dickson has mortgaged Bayelsa with series of loans.” According to Sylva, it has become necessary to explain the debt profile of Bayelsa state because the government is bent on witch-hunting him, rather than explain the state they met and the state they would be handing over to the next government that would come on board soon. “This government led by its pretend governor is still feeling hunted by the ghost of Sylva. For crying out loud, Sylva was governor almost eight years ago. By this time, Bayelsans expect that they should be explaining the milestones of their achievements and not to keep talking about Sylva,” the ex-governor’s media aide added.

Short News 9th Assembly: South-East APC insists on speakership position Tunde Opalana, Abuja A group of principal stakeholders and accomplished personalities from the South East zone under the umbrella of South East Alliance has insisted that the position of House of Representatives speaker be zoned to the region. The group said it will be fair in the spirit of justice and equity for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give the position to the South East. The South East Alliance stated that if indeed, the federal character principle is an indelible part of the constitution, then it must find expression in the composition of presiding officers of the ninth National Assembly. Addressing the press at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Friday, Director of Media and Publicity for the group, Kingsley Ononuju, disclosed that the group has spoken with the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomole at a meeting on the need to consider the zone in the sharing of positions. Hr said it was common knowledge that in the first term of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the South East did not head any of the three arms of government despite the fact that it is part of Nigeria’s majority tripod. According to him, even though the group was not holding Buhari responsible for the equity shortfall given the fact that he does not control the affairs of the National Assembly, the group is of the view that the President can direct the leadership of the party to advise elected National Assembly members to ensure equity prevails in the distribution of positions, especially now that the APC won the required votes in the South-east.

NGE demands lifting of suspension on AIT, Raypower licences Ladesope Ladelokun, Lagos The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has condemned the indefinite suspension of the licences of the African Independent Television, AIT and Raypower by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The two stations belonged to Daar Communications Limited. The guild in a statement signed by Funke Egbemode and Mary Atolagbe, president and general secretary respectively, therefore, demanded the revocation of the suspension order as it runs contrary to the ideals of free speech and the fine tenets of press freedom, noting that this is a case of executive highhandedness that paints the country in the darkest era of dictatorship. The statement reads in part: “The fourth estate of the realm remains the watchdog of society and any attempt to gag it in any guise

is an affront on democracy and the people. The NBC must and should rescind this ignoble and despicable decision. “The guild strongly believes the NBC’s action is a draconian form of regulation, being out of tune with democratic principles. “The guild is concerned about the violation of the constitutional rights of DAAR Communications and absence of media freedom, independence and the stifling of operations of media outfits which are performing their roles as the watchdog of the Nigerian society. “The NGE condemns in strong terms the barbaric crackdown on the broadcast outfit and demands immediate cessation of this atrocious repression and excessive show of power by the NBC, whose duty is to regulate and not kill the media. “Muzzling the media and throwing thousands of Nigerians into the already saturated labour market should not be the

trophy for good corporate governance of a regulator; it is something to be ashamed of and NBC should be ashamed at its action in a fledgling democracy in the 21st century. “The guild is strongly of the opinion that the NBC in exercising its regulatory powers, should concentrate on implementing policies that will position Nigeria’s broadcasting to compete in the global spheres, rather than engage in witchhunting and unnecessary show of excessive force.” The NGE expressed solidarity with the AIT/Raypower family, urging the staff and management to remain calm as the Guild liaises with well meaning Nigerians and other media professionals to get justice. It however, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to use his good offices to call NBC to order. The NGE recalled that NBC had before the 2019 general elections shut down Joy FM in Jos for violations of the broadcasting code.

EU calls for passage of gender equality bill in Nigeria Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja Ambassador of Denmark and EU Gender Champion in Nigeria, Jasper Kamp, has urged the National Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure the passage of the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill in Nigeria. Speaking during a strategic meeting on “moving forward women participation in governance and politics in Nigeria” on Friday, Kamp revealed that the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill in Nigeria would be beneficial to the country. According to the ambassador who represents the EU delegation in Nigeria, the country cannot afford to leave women out of politics, adding that “it is scientifically proven that companies, governments, peace building efforts, economic growth and many more areas of society are substantially more effective and have longer lasting effects when there is equal representation by both genders.” The envoy expressed concern that women had always been cheated by their

male counterparts, especially during party primaries. “In the party primaries, many women were robbed of their rightful place on the ballots by the parties. I believe that this is an issue that needs to be regulated by law and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be the guardian of such a principle,” Kamp said. He said that Nigeria needs to implement tools to improve women’s involvement in politics which could be minimum quotas for women in parliament. “This is to ensure that the country comes to a self sustainable level of women in governance and politics as soon as the next elections, from where it can develop organically. “There is no time to waste. This is in the common interest of all citizens of Nigeria,” he said and urged men to support women to attain their status in politics Also, Project Advisor, Gender and Inclusion, Preventing Election Violence and Education for Inclusion in Nigeria,

Carthy Latiwa, also advocated for effective participation of women in the electoral process in Nigeria. “Effective participation of women in the electoral process remains a crucial challenge to be surmounted if Nigeria’s democracy is to be placed on a sound sustainable footing,” she said. Latiwa noted with concern that the outcome of the 2019 elections which witnessed further decline in the number of women did not lend credence to genuine efforts by various stakeholders on the election. “Given the central role of women in the development process and their immense potential to make a positive difference in governance, the continued political marginalisation of women must come to an end. “A situation in which Nigeria lags behind given women empowerment indices even by African standard is not acceptable. As the nation approaches the 2013 elections, all hands must be on deck to ensure that more opportunities are provided for women to win elections at various levels,” she said.

Twenty-five prison inmates at the Jalingo Prison in Taraba state were on Friday granted bail by the state Chief Judge, Justice Josephine Tuktur. The chief judge made the announcement during a prison decongestion tour to the Jalingo Prison. Justice Tuktur while fielding questions from journalists shortly after the visit, said, even though the well-being of the inmates was her major concern, she is insisting that the benefitting inmates must produce guarantors who will guarantee their appearances for trial during court sessions. Tuktur, who confirmed that most of the inmates were those awaiting trial, said, they (the inmates) must take all necessary action to see that they secure their freedom. While expressing concern over the delay by prosecutors in the dispensation of justice at various courts, Tuktur opined that if the police say they have not completed their investigations, what the court has to do is to advise them to hasten up their investigations. She emphasized that the purpose of her visit was to decongest the prison, but insisted that the inmates must be tried in the court of law.

Kalu insists Buhari must mediate Oshiomhole, Oyegun face off Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo, Lagos

Senator - elect for Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu on Friday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the rift between the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie - Oyegun and the incumbent, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Kalu said Buhari’s intervention has become imperative to avoid any drift in the ruling party. Speaking in an interview with reporters at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on his way to Abuja, the former governor said President Buhari should call the feuding party chieftains to order to avoid further bickerings capable of eroding the gains of the party in the last elections. While commending Buhari for prevailing on Senator Danjuma Goje to step down for Senator Ahmed Lawan as candidate for the Senate Presidency, Kalu said such rapprochement was critical to ensuring the party speaks with one voice on such a fundamental matter. He said: “What they are doing

is part of democracy. Democracy must not agree and that is why it is democracy. Democracy is a collection of all opinions. But, we have called on Mr. President based on the way he settled the Goje matter, for us to be able to call them. If the President occasionally intervenes in this kind of issue, we will not be having problems. “In PDP, there are bigger problems, but they intervened and settled the matter. Before the President will tell you, I don’t want to play politics, but he is the chief politician. I think the President has started changing his mind to be able to be intervening in cases like that. I am sure we will sort out Oyegun and Oshiomhole’s problems by next week. “I am sure Mr. President is already doing something on that matter. And I want to make it clear; people should not be misleading people by saying what the President did not say. I advise that Nigerians should not be misleading the public with what the President never said.” Kalu advised APC members to desist from using the name of Buhari to entrench their personal and selfish interest, saying presently many politicians were using the President’s name to pursue causes that Buhari has not endorsed.

He said his endorsement of Lawal as President of the Senate was driven by deep convictions about Lawan’s capacity to push for robust leadership that will deepen the political and economic space for the prosperity of Nigeria and Nigerians. While restating his clamour for the position of deputy Senate President to be ceded to the South East region, the senator-elect said such a move is godly, morally correct and fits the sense of equity, balance and justice. Kalu added that his insistence for the position to be zoned to the South East is not about himself, but ensuring geo - political balance, adding that “I am not only restating it, but I am saying that it is the most godly thing to do because I am ready to do that job to help both the Senate in lawmaking and help the executive to be able to bring stimulus that would fix the economy. “I am interested in the economy because if we get the economy right, the security will be addressed. I think a hungry man is an angry man. So we need to also be looking at candidates that have capacity to do the work. And I have capacity to do the work. I have the capacity of managing human beings and the Senate is about human management.”

Condemning the suspension of the operating licence of African Independent Television and RayPower FM by the National Broadcast Commission (NBC), CUPP tasked all Nigerians sympathetic to the cause of Chief M.K.O. In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, by its national Spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere on Friday, the CUPP said that a nation that suppresses free speech and unlawfully shuts down media houses cannot invite people to an event to mark the same democracy it is trying to destroy. “The celebration is at best a mockery of democracy and the memory of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 elections, who himself was a media mogul and also suffered so much in the hands of the maximum dictator, late Sani Abacha whom President Muhammadu Buhari served, adored and defended till date and whom he still emulates till this day. “The CUPP also enjoins all media houses in the country to do whatever is lawful and they consider necessary to do in defence of free speech and protection of constitutional and democratic rights,” the statement read. The coalition also described the closure of the media house as a complete reversal of the democratic gains the country has made in the last two decades. Describing the reasons given by the NBC as flimsy excuses, the CUPP said the reasons adduced cannot survive the simplest of tests in a constitutional and democratic society. “This act of shutting down Nigeria’s premier private television and radio stations is as despotic, totalitarian and authoritarian as it is primitive, barbaric and a complete reversal of the democratic gains the country has made in the last two decades,” it said.

Atiku condemns closure of AIT, says free press in danger Tunde Opalana, Abuja Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has said the closure of AIT and Raypower FM owned by the DAAR Group by the federal government is a throwback to the era of Decree 4 during which Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as head of state shackled the media. Atiku warned that the suspension of the licenses of the DAAR Group and shutting down of its stations reveal a dangerous dark anti-media agenda by the Buhari administration to stifle critical voices in the country, adding that the administration’s hostility to free press cannot be hidden, despite its pretended commitment to

democratic values. According to Atiku, any situation where the media cannot freely criticize the government poses a grave danger to democracy, asserting that the draconian action against AIT and Ray Power by the NBC is only a confirmation of government’s intolerance of free and critical press. The PDP presidential candidate further explained that you cannot have a vibrant democratic order where the press is under totalitarian threats from a supposed democratic government, adding that if the press is not free, the situation will inevitably lead to dictatorship and endanger the struggle to entrench democracy in Nigeria. The Waziri Adamawa said it is impossible to love democratic values

and hate free press at the same time, noting that “democracy is not a government of kings or lords who feel superior to the people and is not accountable.” Atiku warned that the war against the media is the first stage to turn the nation’s democracy into full blown dictatorship. “Dictators want to be worshipped rather than being criticised and held accountable for performance or actions. That is why they find democratic order an inconvenience to their sinister desires to kill free speech,” he further noted. He said if Nigerians don’t defend free speech and free press, their own freedoms might be ultimately jeopardized by the government’s intolerance of criticisms.

Chairman of the association, Obruche Omo, said that since the creation of the state, no commissioner has been able to do what the former commissioner did for persons with disabilities. “No commissioner ever made us stakeholders in the state, but when she came on board she gave us many opportunities like others in the state. “We are appealing to Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa to re-appoint her as the commissioner for women affairs because we know that Okowa has listening ears “ Obruche said. They expressed gratitude to the governor for giving the ex-commissioner the opportunity to serve in his government and assured him of their supports at all times, irrespective of their health challenge.

NAFDAC shuts honey packaging facility in FCT The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) raided a facility that packages honey under poor hygienic environment in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who disclosed this in a statement, said the action was based on information on social media which indicated that the product, produced by Upon the Rock Church of God, Durumi, Abuja was adulterated. “We acted based on information (video) of honey purchased from a certain supermarket in Abuja, circulated on social media by a customer alleging that the product was adulterated. “The product was produced by Upon the Rock Church of God, Durumi, Abuja,’’ Adeyeye said, adding that tests on the product, which was initially registered with NAFDAC confirmed that the product had become unwholesome and unfit for consumption. “Investigations revealed that the company registered ‘Upon the Rock Honey’ with NAFDAC in December 2018 upon assurance that NAFDAC’s quality standards were met through proper testing and inspection. “But thereafter, the company started producing under poor hygiene. The facility also added some unregistered variants of the product that were never presented to NAFDAC. “Some of the products were found to have fake NAFDAC registration numbers printed on them. Several samples of the products have been analysed and the reports showed that many of the products were unsatisfactory and may pose danger to health,’’ she stated.

Why Canadians love Wizkid, Olamide, Timaya – Prince George Canada-based showbiz guru, Prince George Peters, has been pushing Nigerian music in North America for over 10 years. As a trained Computer Analyst & Project Manager, he has successfully hosted tours for a legion of top Nigerian talents including Wizkid, Olamide, Ycee, Bovi, Oritsefemi, Diamond Platnumz, Dr Sid, Korede Bello, Timaya, Flavour, and Kwam I among others. He shares from his robust experience with MUTIAT ALLI. Enjoy… How long have you been in showbiz and can you please tell us about yourself and career? My name is George Peters. I’m a twin, Kehinde is one of my names and I have a twin sister. All my siblings are based abroad. I was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. I’m a Showbiz promoter based in Toronto, Canada where I run Prince George Entertainment amongst other business interests in logistics and automobile. Entertainment wasn’t originally my thing. The journey started in 2009 when I registered my company, Prince George Entertainment. Before then, I was working with Bell Canada, one of the biggest telecommunications company in Canada as a Project Manager II. The pay was good but the passion to do what I love to do made me quit. I originally trained as a Computer Analyst. Can you tell us about your sojourn in Canada and your first baby-steps in the showbiz industry? I have lived in Canada since 2007 but before then I have lived for many years in the UK and US where I studied. Work brought me to Canada because I wanted to work in the Telecommunication industry. Showbiz for me started when I co-worked with a friend who is also a showbiz promoter, Microbell. George We packaged concerts in was hosting Olamide Live Canada for Wizkid and then, Concert in Canada in 2016. He Flavour, Bracket and Timaya was no doubt the hottest item back in the days. This was and everybody wanted him in around 2012 thereabout. Canada and he came through. It was also quite expensive In those early days, how bringing him but at the end was the experience and was of the day, I was able to seal your turning point? the deal. I brought him for Of course, there’s no the concert and it was a sold endeavour without its own out show which we held in at challenges. The turning point New Continuation Banquet

African artistes. Predominantly, it seems like you have worked more with musicians but which other talents have you worked with? I have worked with a lot of comedians including I Go Dye, Seyi Brown, Bovi, Woli Agba, Arole, Mama Tobi, Aphricanape, Kenny Blaq. I won’t lie to you; I prefer to work more with comedians than musicians because the audience for comedy is bigger. People work hard a lot and do not miss any opportunities to come out and have a good laugh. Amazingly, the audience responds more to comedy than music here in Canada. What concerts should music fans in Canada and North America expect from you for the rest of the year? I have quite a whole lot of music concerts lined up for the rest of the year including Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde aka K1 De Ultimate whose deal I just concluded during my recent visit to Nigeria in April. Other big concerts coming include Tiwa Savage, Zlatan, 9ice, CDQ, Ray Vanny and Diamond Platnumz etc. Of course, Olamide is also coming back this year and the people can’t wait. What do you think the Nigerian Government can do to help your industry grow? I think Government should make the process of Visa application seamless for entertainers because these guys are Nigerian ambassadors. A letter of endorsement from Government to the embassies will go a long way. We have had artistes been denied Visas which should not be.

Hall in Belfield, Toronto. We recorded over 2,500 audiences and that’s because his music cuts across different races and tribe. We had people like Jamaicans, Ghanaians, Kenyans and other African nationalities. Music is a universal language. Olamide was excited too because we delivered. That show opened the eyes of other Nigerian and

Aside Olamide’s show, could you mention another memorable gig you have put together? That would be the one of Diamond Platnumz, the Tanzanian super star. We recorded over 2000 audience which was massive. I compare it with the Olamide show because we took Diamond Platnumz to three cities in Toronto, Montreal

and Edmonton also Timaya’s Show was sold out and very memorable as well. Aside Nigerian acts, what’s been your experience working with other African acts and what’s the reception for African talents in Canada? I have not limited the talents that I have worked with alone to Nigerian artistes. As I speak, we are having conversations with artistes from other countries and by God’s grace, we will expand our network to International artistes like Cardi B which we are working on at the moment? What are you doing to give back to the Nigerian music industry? We are starting a project in Nigeria from next year which will see us bringing some big artistes from North America to Nigeria. If you call it a cultural exchange, that’s fine because music promotion is supposed to be a two-way traffic. For a young artiste aspiring to do international tour, what is your advice for them? Like I said earlier, just stay focused and believe in your grind, your craft and yourself. In good time, your work will be pronounced. What are the criteria you consider before touring with an artiste? And why does it seems like hip-hop and rap artistes don’t get invited for international tours from promoters like you? The style of music an artiste does matters a lot in our criteria. Majorly, the crowds we sell music artistes to are the students. Before we bring in an artiste for a tour, we put out a poll asking the students community who they would like to see perform. We then work with the outcome from that survey and bring in the popular choice. So, it’s not as if I won’t do tour with an artiste just because I do not like the face of the person. It goes beyond that. Don’t forget, this is a business that we and our staff must run prudently too.

New Music: MYOA’s ‘You’ is a sincere and soulful call Budding singer/ songwriter, Myoa blesses us with a soulful single that gives us plenty to talk about. Listening to ‘You’, it is obvious that Myoa reached deep to write this one. The singer’s closeness to the subject radiates from every note she hits, and the lyrics are pretty clear and concise – no hidden messages here. Myoa said, “I wrote this song from a personal & universal place. ‘You’ is about breaking chains from toxic relationships that don’t contribute to personal growth and happiness, and choosing to

stay ahead and WIN”. Just as she bared her soul in the song, Myoa chose to do the same in the video. We see a vulnerable side of the singer as she pours her heart into the keys of her piano. Being that Myoa co-directed the video, alongside Will Darosa, it’s safe to say every moment we witness was intentionally shot to reveal the artiste’s connection to the song. Watching her play, it’s difficult not to get drawn into the song. ‘You’ is truly a brilliant masterpiece fueled by emotion and thoroughly giving in soulful energy.

Interview Nigerians are yet to embrace team building in business - Ikechukwu The Nigerian Forever Business Owners are back from their 2019 Global Rally in Stockholm, Sweden. In this interview, the Country Manager, Mr. Daniel Ikechukwu, speaks on the event and the tonic it is to all engaged in the Aloe Vera Company’s business of Health, Wellness and Wealth. Excerpts: You just returned from Stockholm, Sweden, where Forever Living Products International held her 2019 Global Rally, a yearly convention of Forever Business Owners from all over the world. How did it go? The event was excellent. It is our tradition in the Forever family worldwide to gather at a selected country every year for a general celebration of our independent Forever Business Owners (FBOs) and also engage in various activities which serve to reward FBOs who performed really well during the previous business year and also motivate everyone, while setting the tone for the next business year. Our people were excited, motivated and now we look forward to 2020 with higher expectations. Nigerians are known to be loud while attending these global events. How was it this time around? They were fantastic. We registered our presence with 148 Nigerians in Stockholm. It was exciting to see Nigerians in our spectacular national colours of Green-White-Green and also our signature Ankara attires. Everyone was amazing and regardless of the turbulent times in the economy, we represented our country well and gave a good account of Nigeria as a strong Forever country. Nigerians love the products and the business opportunity as these have positively impacted and are still impacting the lives of so many across the country. Forever has two African giants, Forever Nigeria and Forever South Africa. How would you say these two countries measure up against each other business-wise? In all honesty, Nigeria cannot be compared to South Africa, because presently, Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people, while South Africa has just 56 million. You also remember that the products we are dealing with are drinks, personal care products,

products that people consume regularly; then you discover there is a large gap between the Nigerian and South African market. However, when you weigh in on which country is hungrier for success, from that viewpoint, you find that South Africans with a background of apartheid, know much more about collective struggle and how to fight as a team and Forever is a team business. That is slightly lacking in Nigerians, as our people struggle with working as a team. Our people are yet to embrace the importance of team building in business, cooperation and collaboration. Here, we like to work for ourselves and many don’t care about uplifting others, even when those people actually look up to them. However, we are working hard on the ‘teamwork culture’ and we are positive it will yield success. It is largely said that the Global Rally is the apex of Forever celebrations. What do you say to this? The Global Rally is unarguably the most exciting event in the Forever family. Some say the Eagle Managers Retreat is the most exciting but that is attended strictly by those who qualify, unlike the Rally which is open to everyone; both qualifiers and non-qualifiers. For this reason, more people generally get to attend the rally and even invite guests. However, for the qualifiers, the trip is all expense paid for two and the company even gives them money to spend while on the trip, which they can choose to either spend over there or just take back home. In addition to this, some FBOs also qualify for ‘Chairman’s Bonus’, which is essentially a share in the company’s profit for the previous business year. These Chairman’s bonus cheques are presented to them on stage by the president of the company. Those who did not qualify for the rally at all are also free to attend, so long as they can pay for their own trips. All these contribute to the excitement and the reason many consider it the

Daniel Ikechukwu

best Forever event. In Stockholm alone, we had over 15,000 people gathered as a Forever family. The entire city was electrified by the presence of Forever. New products were launched such as the ‘Forever Supergreen’, which is a product made purely from vegetables and herbs. If you appreciate Green, irrespective of your kind of diet or your nutrition, you will definitely appreciate this product. Also unveiled was the ‘Aloe Sunscreen’. This is a product that had gone through so much reformation and now we have the best in what was expected of the Aloe Sunscreen after about 200 tests. Again, there was ‘Forever Mini’, an Aloe Vera Gel in tetra packs. Aside the 1 litre Gel, we now have the 330ml Gel in tetra pack. You just rip it open and drink. The destination for next year’s Forever Global Rally (2020) was also announced – Sydney, Australia. The FBOs were really excited and motivated to work towards qualifying for this all-expense paid trip next year. What advice do you have for your hard working FBOs who couldn’t qualify for the Global

Rally this year? Those who could not qualify for the Global Rally this year have another opportunity in 2020. The exciting thing is that the destinations for 2020 are great. For 41 years, the clamour has always been that Forever has taken people to all the continents but not to Australia. And now that call has been answered; our FBOs have the privilege to visit that continent, Australia. So, come April, 2020, all our Business Owners who will qualify will have the opportunity to visit Sydney, Australia. It is not a question of come and join; it is not a question of how old you have been in the business, it is about how many lives you are willing to change for the better. How many people can I meet before the end of 2019? How many people will I talk to today to help them gain from the benefits of Aloe Vera and other amazing Forever products? Also, for those who are involved in our Eagle Managers Retreat, the destination is the Bahamas (a ship cruise). So, we have two excellent inspiring destinations for our people next year. Now we have it, so our Business Owners only have to work to qualify in 2020.

Promasidor restates commitment to employees safety, compliance to regulations Temitope Adebayo Promasidor Nigeria Limited has restated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees and risk-free operations as it remains unwavering in adherence to health and safety requirements for organisational development. This position was reinforced at the company’s safety day held last week under the theme “No Safety, Know Pain”, where stakeholders enlightened the workforce on health and safety measures, both at work and at home. Addressing the employees, Head, Technical of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Jean Robert Thouanel said life is meaningful and worthwhile when safety is present and aglow, and for the company, it is always safety first. He said Promasidor takes delight in certifying that every employee accepts responsibility for their own safety and others around them, as well as stakeholders who may be affected by its operations. “Over the years, Promasidor has continued to improve on its safety consciousness, and as the business grows, it enhances its approach to safe work ethics,” Thouanel said. He said the company has received commendation from government regulatory agencies and industry associations due to its high level of compliance to health, safety and environment. Thouanel, who represented Anders Einarsson, the Managing Director of the company, outlined measures undertaken on work safety to include the provision of the company’s safety manuals to employees and stakeholders, safety induction for every visitor and contractor, and the upgrade of hose reel system which complements the fire hydrant system and existing hose reel’s stations. Others include introduction of iron barriers to buffer and protect walkways, a quarterly celebration of near-miss recorders, a new outfit for safety marshals and compliance to safety regulations. Also, all employees of the company have insurance coverage in case of work accident. For upholding safety ethics in the company, Promasidor presented certificates to deserving employees and urged them to be steadfast in their commitment to ensuring accident-free operations. In his remark, the guest speaker, Lanre Eyinfunjowo, Managing Director, Donald Resources and Services Limited, who spoke on the topic, Making Safety a Culture said safety ethics should not end at work but also be imbibed at home. Eyinfunjowo, who is a safety expert, advised that employees should have basic safety knowledge and operate equipment like a fire extinguisher, even at home as part of tools to combat fire outbreak. He stated that good safety culture can eliminate accidents at work and associated illness that may follow many years after, which a company may not envisage. According to him, the International Labour Organisation’s statistic shows that 2.2million people die every year as a result of accidents at the workplace, and this could be traced to poor leadership structure in organisations where deaths occur. On this, he commended Promasidor for existing facilities to ensure workplace safety. The safety expert explained that an organisation without proper leadership and safety measures for its workforce could have its corporate image eroded as a result of regular deaths or work-related accidents, also it may have an economic effect on the company as resources meant for development would be spent on lives and property, and also litigations from employees.

LPG sub-sector can create 2m jobs, says VP Osinbajo Reels out plans, targets for sector’s development Motolani Oseni The Federal Government through a range of interventions and policy implementation will significantly improve domestic and industrial utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria, with potentials of creating over two million jobs for Nigerians, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has disclosed. Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Friday at the commissioning of the Techno Oil LPG Cylinder Manufacturing Plant in Lekki, Lagos.

According to the Vice President, “the Federal Government will continue to actively support every effort to promote the use of LPG in Nigeria, as well as create and maintain an effective and catalytic regulatory environment.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said, “the goal is to achieve five million Metric Tonnes (5,000,000 MT) of domestic, commercial and industrial LPG utilisation in 10 years. Specifically, for household cooking, we are targeting a 40 per cent adoption rate (i.e. 13.8m households) in 5 years, and 73 per cent adoption in 10 years (33.3m households). We believe that the sub-

sector can create up to 2 million new direct and indirect jobs in Nigeria.” He added that since the implementation of the coordination reforms, including the creation of a dedicated Project Management Office, great progress has been recorded in the various segments of the gas sector. According to the Vice President, the progress recorded include, “removal of 5 per cent VAT from the domestic pricing of LPG, as a first step in giving domestic output an advantage against imported products. “Development of a Marketer Cylinder

Owned Model instead of the current Consumer Cylinder Owned Model, this will eliminate the consumers’ up-front purchase of LPG cylinders which, in some cases, are substandard, replacing it with a cylinder exchange, whereby the consumer only pays for the content. “No a household will need to purchase or own an LPG cylinder. The Cylinders will be delivered and retrieved by the Marketers who will also be responsible for the maintenance and refurbishment of the cylinders, making LPG accessible to a whole new segment of nonLPG users.”

NUPENG urges Buhari to address rising security challenges Joy Obakeye The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), has decried the impact of insecurity on the country’s economy, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently address the rising menace. The National President of NUPENG, Williams

Akporeha said, insecurity has given rise to a drastic cut in the supply chain of both cash and food crops from the rural communities, leading to rural-urban migration. The situation, he said, has snowballed into population explosion and avoidable overstretching of infrastructure by people looking for safety and protection of their lives. He decried the scourge of kidnapping, armed

banditry, communal clashes, insurgency, advance-fee scam, cyber fraud, Boko Haram, armed robbery, ritual killings, cattle rustling and youth restiveness, among others. “Besides, this menace has drastically reduced the investment profile of Nigeria because of both local and foreign investors are scared of the hostile and insecure operating environments which serve as a risk to them over the fear of

potential monetary loss. As a result of this, many employable Nigerians are faced with difficult times.” “We call on President Buhari, having secured a fresh mandate to speedily nip the security challenges of the country in the bud. This will serve as a springboard to open windows of opportunities for socio-economic growth and advancement.

NCAA: DAVAAKY gets AMO certification to carry out NDT inspections Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo

L-R: Ezinne Kufre Ekanem, CEO, Rosemary’s, the Soft Furnishing Company and Producer of Hymnodia, a reality TV show created around hymns and worship; with Kenneth Ekhuemelo, winner of Hymnodia Season, and Kufre Ekanem, Managing Director, Philosoville Limited and Executive Producer, Hymnodia; during the car prize presentation to Ekhuemelo, at the All Saints (Army Headquarter) Cathedral, Abalti, held in Lagos...recently.

Funds will be used for developmental purposes, NDDC boss assures Motolani Oseni The Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Prof Nelson Brambaifa, has said the Commission will continue to follow the proper public procurement procedures to ensure that its funds are applied judiciously for development purposes. Prof Brambaifa stated this at the opening of a one-week workshop for the Commission’s executive management and directors at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Port Harcourt. The NDDC Chief Executive Officer said that the Commission’s mandate included delivering services that give full value for money, noting that it was necessary for the management to be prudent in its efforts to drive development in the Niger Delta region. Prof Brambaifa said that the workshop on the procurement processes would impact positively

on the workings of the NDDC as it relates to public procurement and the management of funds for the interventionist agency. He remarked: “Our goal is clear; we want everyone to be conversant with the procurement process because it is not something that should be left for only procurement officers. The experts have made it simple for us to understand the issues in procurement. “I have no doubt that someday we will fully integrate the electronic data management into our procurement system. We will adopt the electronic platform to enhance the efficiency and transparency of our processes.” The NDDC boss said that it was important that the Commission’s staff fully understand the procurement process to ensure that funds meant for development projects and programmes were used judiciously. The NDDC Director for Procurement, Engr. Theophilus Alagoa, explained that the training was

organised to enlighten officers of the Commission to know their roles in the procurement process. He said: “Before now, procurement is seen as the responsibility of only those in the procurement unit of the Commission. The fact is that procurement is for every officer in NDDC and they have roles and responsibilities as specified in the Procurement Act 2007.” He said further: “We want NDDC staff to wake up to their responsibilities by arming them with knowledge. We noticed that a lot of people don’t know their roles. In fact, every department in NDDC has the power to procure for itself. The procurement unit is only there to ensure compliance with the Public Procurement Act.” The Chief Executive Officer of Tabriz Procurement Solutions Ltd, Engr. Emeka Ezeh, who facilitated the workshop said that training on the processes of public procurement was very crucial for development

agencies like the NDDC because of the enormous responsibilities they were saddled with. He emphasized the need for government agencies and departments to imbibe the culture of proper public procurement, noting that it was important that public procurement in the NDDC was done in the right way. We believe that when the NDDC and other key Federal Government agencies adopt this culture, it will go a long way to ensure that there is value for money in service delivery. Engr. Ezeh said the workshop was necessary to remind directors of NDDC of their responsibilities and the need for them to always adhere to the guidelines set up by law to ensure that public funds in their custody were expended judiciously according to the laid down rules. He observed: “To deliver on its mandate, the NDDC needs to procure according to the laws because the use of public funds is regulated by laws.”

Ekhuemelo receives Hymnodia car prize amidst jubilation Godwin Anyebe Kenneth Ekhuemelo, the inaugural winner of Hymnodia, has been presented with a brand-new car, the star prize of the triple ‘E’ (entertainment, education and edification) reality television show created around hymns and worship. The presentation, which attracted jubilant worshippers took place at the All Saints (Army Headquarter) Cathedral, Abalti Barracks, Surulere, Lagos recently where Ekhuemelo is an organist. Hymnodia organisers had promised the winner of the competition a brand new car, in addition to the ASAPH, the main prize specially designed and named after King David’s chief musician, as well as N5 million. Hymnodia was a keenly contested

show as Ekhuemelo battled with Olumide Dada, another brilliant and leading performer at the grand finale. But a winner had to emerge, and that was Ekhuemelo, the bassofundo. The hymncert ended the 14week showpiece that was aimed at reigniting the almost-forgotten hymn culture among young Nigerians. Explaining the rationale for the presentation at the church, KufreEkanem, Managing Director of Philosoville, initiator of Hymnodia said the reality show redefined the art of worship and that since hymn has its foundation in the church, it was wise to bring the car to worship with Ekhuemelo. “Ekhuemelo is an organist in All Saints Cathedral and this also shows that the members are part of his success story”, he explained. On what inspired Hymnodia,

Ekanem said “we had thought over the idea of Hymnodia for 10 years. This had to do with the concept itself and the rigours of how it would work, what would be the processes, the protocol of developing the content and sustaining its essence over a 14-week period and beyond. When we finally started on it last year, we were blessed with a group of fantastic people who put their efforts into Hymnodia as if they had the dream themselves. They were dream enablers and I appreciate their great works and sacrifices” he narrated. Commending Hymnodia for the novel initiative, Rev. (Col.) Bante Kauche, Director, Chaplain Services, Nigerian Army, eulogised Ekanem for the initiative which was thoroughly planned and executed to an appreciable standard. He said Hymnodia has

tremendously enhanced the talent of the 14 hymntestants, including Ekhuemelo, as well as young Nigerians who watched the programme. Also, Rev. (Major) Baba David, Vicar General of All Saints (Army Headquarter) Cathedral, said Ekanem has taken hymns rendition beyond the ordinary and prayed God to strengthen him in order to sustain the programme. “I am highly elated because of a member of this the church emerged the winner and prayed for him to be fortified with the Grace to continue in this stride,” he said. Receiving the car prize with joy written all over him, the bass of undo thanked the initiator of Hymnodia for the opportunity to learn new skills on hymns writing and rendition at the Hymnstitute and for the fulfilment of the prize.

Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued an Approved Maintenance Organization (AMO) Certificate on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to indigenous Company, DAV-AAKY Nigeria Limited based in Lagos to carry out NDT inspection to ensure aircraft airworthiness and serviceability. The company is now approved to inspect and carry out NonDestructive Testing on aircraft and aircraft components with specifications covering Eddy Current Testing, Magnetic Testing, Dye Penetrant and Ultrasonic Testing inspection on all types of aircraft and aircraft components. DAV-AAKY Nigeria Limited with AMO/5N/DAV is the first NDT AMO holder of its kind in Nigeria. Speaking to the media after the brief AMO certification ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of DAV-AAKY Nigeria Limited, Engineer Ayoola Stephen explained that the NDT tests are carried out on aircraft whole or components to detect cracks, corrosion etc on the aircraft or aircraft components. He also added that the company has trained and competent NDT personnel with certification to EN4179 and/or NAS410 which is internationally recognized. And as a result, they can carry out NDT inspections internationally. The NDT tests are not restricted to aviation as they are carried out in Automobile, Sea, Rail, Oil and Gas industry. “We carry out NDT inspection on aircraft and its components to ascertain its serviceability. Also, not really on the only aircraft, we also carry out an inspection on the automobile, in the sea, marine, ships bridges and the rest but presently, NCAA has given us an AMO on NDT inspection in aviation and this is the first of its kind in this country” said Engr. Stephen Ayoola. According to him, “DAV-AAKY Nigeria Limited is approved to offer NDT inspection services. You don’t need to come to our base for us to carry out inspection, if your aircraft is in Kaduna, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, anywhere your aircraft is or anywhere the equipment or part you want us to work on we will come down there and carry out your job which makes it the first mobile NDT service provider in the country.” He went on, “We are filling a gap and it is a good advantage to our clients, our services make it easier for us to reach you and also for you to reach us, it cut costs to airlines because you don’t need to fly the aircraft down. It reduces a lot of cost for clients who would want to employ the services of DAV-AAKY Nigeria Limited, plus we are affordable, reliable and efficient.” On his plans for the future, Engr. Stephen said he envisions a scenario where his company would train no fewer than 500 people in the next five to ten years as professionals in the field of NDT are few and far in between. “It’s not easy, but we will be the first leading NDT in this country and would train no fewer than 500 staff on NDT to employ a lot of people in the years to come. NDT professionals are no more than 20 well trained in this country and this is sad. I want to see in the next five-ten years time we will be having over 500 or 1000 people”, he said.

How Abiodun can succeed as Ogun governor -Taiwo Hon. Waliu Taiwo, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supported the candidature of Prince Dapo Abiodun, the newly elected All Progressives Congress (APC) governor in Ogun State. To Taiwo, the victory of Abiodun is well deserved. He however urges the new governor to perform better than his predecessors and turn the state around within the next few months of ascension to power. For him one of the agenda he has for the governor is the issue of road construction, while not neglecting security, employment, education and other infrastructural development. PATRICK OKOHUE reports. About two days to the governorship election in Ogun State, you shifted focus and began to go round your supporters in Ogun West and Ado Odo Ota Local Government in particular to support the APC candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun despite the fact that you were a chieftain of the APC. What informed that decision? Number one, you will recall that I was the Director of the Campaign Organisation of Hon. Ladi Adebutu and our objective was to ensure that he became the governor of Ogun State. But due to reasons beyond our control he was not given the flag of the PDP. When it became obvious that Hon. Adebutu would not be the candidate of the PDP, we had a choice either to support Hon. Abdukadir Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) or Gboyega Nasir Isiaka aka GNI of ADC or Prince Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC). It was obvious that Hon. Ladi Adebutu was moving to APM, but we the leaders of Ogun West, having been persuaded by our people, we had to go to the APC. We were in the forefront of the struggle for over 20 years. We told former governor Gbenga Daniel that he wanted Commissioner for Works and Governor after his tenure and he agreed to this. But due to our fault in Ogun West we lost the opportunity in 2011 because we had two candidates from the area. In 2019, we discovered that the same factor was still there that we were not united. We spoke to the younger ones to come up with a better way. At the last minute, we felt insulted; they called us names for supporting Hon. Adebutu. The reasons we supported Ladi Adebutu was still there till we went for the election. We were later vindicated after the election because if you add the votes of GNI to that of Akinlade, an Ogun West man would have become the Governor of Ogun State if they had come together as one. If Governor Ibikunle Amosun was sincere about handing over to an Ogun West man he should have supported GNI. Why insisting on Hon. Akinlade. We politicians are usually self-centered. It is not that Amosun wanted us, he just wanted to protect his own interest. He should have supported GNI, a brilliant man, very intelligent, who has worked with the government in the past, and has contested elections two or three times. We were not convinced to support an Ogun West man because the factors that

cost us the office in 2015 were still there. Number two, Prince Dapo Abiodun is a very known person to us for a long time. We were together in UNCP, he won the primaries for Ogun East Senatorial District under the party, I was the returning officer then. He couldn’t go beyond that due to the death of a former military head of state, Gen. Sanni Abacha in 1998. So we have been together for long. Another reason is that for the first time, somebody from Ado Odo/Ota Local Government was nominated as the deputy governor in person of Mrs. Noimat SalakoOyedele. She was nominated by our people from the local government. So due to that, I had no choice than to do what our people wanted. As you know, politics is local. No matter the situation once you don’t disappoint your people, there would be no problem. Some people said that while you were the Director of Ladi Adebutu Democratic Organisation you worked for Prince Dapo Abiodun of the APC, they said you have betrayed your party. What do you say to this? Anytime I hear this I always laugh. What is betrayal, I don’t understand. My duty was to make Hon. Ladi Adebutu the next governor of Ogun State, but when this was not possible I had to go somewhere else. Where I go next is nobody’s business, Ladi did not contest. How can anybody say I betrayed him? If he had contested and I leave then you can accuse me of that. Even if he contested and I leave, you cannot blame me. Politics is about interest, if I am here and I discovered that my interest is no longer there I have right to go somewhere else. There is freedom of association. But you were still in the PDP then? No, it is not like that, some people in the PDP voted for the APM led by Hon. Ladi Adebutu, while some people in the PDP led by former Governor Gbenga Daniel supported the APC. But, your party had a candidate in the election The party had no candidate because as far as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP was concerned the party had no candidate in the election. The NWC wanted Hon. Ladi Adebutu, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Prince Dapo is not new in the business. He is not new in Ogun State politics. He contested for senatorial seat in the past. Ogun State is complex, he should study the past governments, see where they have performed well and improve on them. There are areas where they have worked and there are areas where they did not perform. Majorly, our problem in Ogun State is road. He should look for cheap ways of constructing roads.

Waliu recognised Senator Kashamu Buruji as the PDP governorship candidate for the state. As a loyal party man, the party did not recognise Kashamu so we have the right to support somebody else. What do you think should be the agenda of Prince Dapo Abiodun for the people of Ogun State, Ogun West and Ado Odo/ Ota Local Government, where you are a leader? Prince Dapo is not new in the business. He is not new in Ogun State politics. He contested for senatorial seat in the past. Ogun State is complex, he should study the past governments, see where they have performed well and improve on them. There are areas where they have worked and there are areas where they did not perform. Majorly, our problem in Ogun State is road. He should look for cheap ways of constructing roads. But, some people say that Governor Ibikunle Amosun did well in road construction. Do you agree with them? Which road did he construct. You can talk of the bridges he constructed in Abeokuta, the capital of the state a place that has no water and you have so many flyovers. All these are elitist projects that would take us nowhere. Let us leave Abeokuta and come to Iyana Ilogbo, where you could spend 10 hours on the road due to bad road. I was there one day from 5pm and didn’t leave the place until 3am because of traffic jam caused by bad road. So what is the essence of the flyovers. People would believe that one is a federal road Most of the roads, where Governor Amosun built flyovers in Abeokuta, are they not federal roads? From Kuto to Shagamu Interchange, he has two flyovers

there. From Lafenwa to Adatan, are they not federal roads. If he did that, why can’t he do some interventions in other places. He is still asking for refund from the Federal Government on some of these roads. Look at Agbara Atan Road, where he wants to build flyover, is it not a federal road. What is the volume of traffic there that he wants to build about one kilometer flyover there. This is a place where there is no river. He demolished houses in Ijoko, Agbado and Akute and still left the areas like that. He has completed about eight flyovers in Abeokuta and left roads in other places untarred. Look at the time of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, he wanted to go into Independent Power Project (IPP) and bought 25 big generating sets from China. He installed one to serve the secretariat, and government estate and Governor Amosun extended it to one private school. The remaining 24 are lying somewhere in Ikorodu, Lagos State and they have not been cleared. The plan of OGD was to install one in the waterworks in Abeokuta instead of spending money on diesels. We have another project in Igbesa, we have so many trailers going there that are falling down due to bad road. We have the Olokola site. See how Governor Amosun frustrated Alhaji Aliko Dangote from building refinery in Ogun State. That refinery in Lagos State would have been done in Ogun State. These are the areas we expect Prince Dapo Abiodun to focus on. This would lead to more IGR and provide employment. What of security? Well, we can say this government has tried in the area of security. But what we are talking about now is all these young people. You see them belonging to cult groups here and there. You see them smoking marijuana openly. It is becoming a big problem. This is because of unemployment, but the government cannot give everybody job. However, the government can intervene so that they could be self-employed. How would you advise the governor to relate with members of the state House Of Assembly? He needs to cooperate with them for smooth running of the government. Like one governor said it is not the law the lawmakers were making that made him to have good governance, but when problem came, they brought the governor down. So the governor should know how to work with them. He should be having interactions with them regularly. Though they are a separate arm of government, they still need to work together. What are your demands in Ogun West? Number one is road. We don’t have road anywhere in Ogun West. There is this road from Agbara Sokoro Road, they should see how they can link the road from Atan. The road continues to Orile Ishaga. We tried to do it then. The state government should do the road from Agbara to Atan

Sanwo-Olu proclaims 9th Lagos Assembly through deputy, Hamzat, as Obasa is re-elected speaker Alade Tasma The Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu may have made history when he delegated his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat on Friday to proclaim the 9th session of the Assembly of the State parliament, a development many see as the first in recent political history for a once in four year function. Sanwo Olu was said to have gone to represent the State at a function in Abuja hence the decision to delegate his deputy. Ordinarily, the Lagos 9th Assembly was to be proclaimed on the 10th of June having had the 8th Assembly proclaimed on the 8th of June, 2015 and since 8th of June, 2019 fell on a Saturday, the next week day which is Monday becomes appropriate date for the inauguration, but for reasons known to the leadership of the House, the event was brought forward to Friday and the governor was not available to perform the duty of proclaiming the Assembly. Meanwhile, the member elect representing Agege constituency 01, who is also the immediate past Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was re-elected to lead the 9th Assembly. Obasa was nominated for the position by the same lawmaker who nominated him for same position four years ago, Hon. Moshood Oshun representing Lagos Mainland Constituency 2, the nomination was however, seconded by Hon. Yinka Ogundimu from Agege Constituency 2. Also elected is the deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun representing

Lagos Island constituency 01. Eshinlokun retained the position he occupied in the 8th Assembly. The Lagos Prince was nominated for the position by Hon. Tunde Braimoh while a theater practitioner turned lawmaker, Hon. Desmond Elliot representing Surulere constituency 01 seconded the nomination. All the Principal officers of the 8th Assembly were however returned to office in the current Assembly except the deputy chief Whip of the House in the last Assembly, Hon. Omotayo Oduntan who did not return to the House. Oduntan aspired to move to the House of Representatives but lost to Hon. Femi Adebanjo for the Alimosho Federal constituency. Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara representing Surulere constituency 02 however, emerged the Deputy Chief Whip of the 9th Assembly. Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Agunbiade representing Ikorodu constituency 01 retained the Majority Leader position, Hon Rotimi Lateef Abiru, Chief Whip and Hon. Wahab Jimoh, the Deputy Majority Leader. Proclaiming the 9th Assembly, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, as represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, appreciated the people of Lagos State for their support at the polls, urging the lawmakers to live up to the expectations of the people. He said, “As you commence the legislative duties, it is important to remind ourselves that we are all accountable to the people of the state. “The essence of democracy is checks and balances and separation of power. Lagos

State has always been a pacesetter and it will continue to remain one. “As progressive partners in this dispensation, we have a responsibility to raise the bar and it is important to uphold this. We should activate the process to develop the state that is home to over 20 million people,” he said. Sanwo-Olu added that the responsibility for oversight functions and the accuracy with which it deserved was very important for the lawmakers. The governor stressed that he was committed to the full implementation of the 2019 budget, which he said was important to the progress of the people of the state. “I will be seeking your support for the quick passage of some bills that will be useful for the progress of the state. “I must congratulate all of us for the victory at the polls. We must honour our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinunu that has worked hard to sustain our democracy. I wish you a successful tenure in the 9th Assembly,” he said. Earlier in his welcome address, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni revealed that the 40 members of the 9th Assembly were all members the All Progressives Congress (APC). Of this numbers, 29 members of the 8th Assembly were reelected into the 9th Assembly while 11 were elected for their first four years. The 9th Lagos Assembly parades one fifth term member, in the person of the Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, three fourth term members, eight third term members and 15 second term members.

How Abiodun can succeed... Continued from page 17 and Igbesa. They should try and complete the road from Ilaro to Owode. Then, there is a road from Igankoto to Ayetoro, that one is very urgent. We call Ota border town, they should do the roads there, same goes for Akute road. They should do the feeder roads. When we got to government then, we constructed Itele/ Ayobo Road. It was that time that Winners Chapel newly came to Ota, so their members from Iyana Ipaja pass through the road. We have done the one from Odo Pako, now Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has completed his own. If you are going to FESTAC, from Odo Eran, you can connect Ipaja then from there to Egbeda to Idimu to Isolo, then Okota and

from there to FESTAC. You don’t need to go through the express. Even if you are going to Surulere, you can link it from here. We need to do our roads instead of wasting money on flyovers. We should try and do feeder roads on all the border towns. The way all these new towns are springing up is amazing. See Mowe Ibafo, you still need to do some interventions. Even if you tar the main roads, how will these people get to the roads. We should do feeder roads for the new towns. On power, we are expecting the government to do some interventions. The government should buy transformers and give communities. Through the Ministry of Housing, we tried to create OGSEC, Ogun State

Electricity Commission. We have many electrical engineers and technicians in the Ministry that are just redundant. So, you need to make use of these people to construct the transformers and fix the cables. They once did that for three days when we were in government. How would you advise the deputy governor on her relationship with the governor? The deputy governor should know that she has only one principal, so nobody should push her. She should know that we have only one governor. She should always be loyal to him. I will always advise her on that. She should be seen as the deputy governor of Ogun State and not that of Ado Odo/Ota Area.

Sanwo-Olu

Sanwo-Olu will surpass Ambode’s achievements -Lawmakers Patrick Okohue Some lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have given an assurance that the new governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu would surpass the achievements of his predecessor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode in four years. Thy lawmakers who gave the assurance at the Tafawa Balewa Square during SanwoOlu’s inauguration, stated that Sanwo-Olu’s knowledge, exposure and experience as a banker, commissioner and an administrator have prepared him for the tasks ahead. According to Hon. Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, representing Ojo Constituency 2, the inauguration was a new dawn and a new beginning in the state. Ogunyemi said that Sanwo-Ou would meet the aspirations of the people, adding that he would go out there to do the bidding of residents of the state. “Today is the climax of all the activities that we carried out during the campaign. We expect that Sanwo-Olu would give the people what they wanted. “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a very intelligent leader. We thought his shoes were so big for former Governor Babatunde Fashola to step into. But we saw the extent

Fashola went as governor for eight years. “Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode also came and he showed that he was a good administrator,” he said. He added that Lagos State would become better soon, especially with Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the deputy governor of the state. Also speaking, Hon. Abiodun Tobun from Epe Constituency 1 said that nothing could beat experience, and that Sanwo-Ou was an embodiment of knowledge as an ex-banker and a former commissioner of in the state. Tobun stated that Sanwo-Olu was well experienced and that he had been tested okay for the job of leading a megacity such as Lagos. “With Babajide Sanwo-Olu we expect a speedy turnaround in Lagos State. You know Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an oracle. He has given us the best product in Babajide Sanwo-Olu and I know he would usher in massive development in the state. “What Ambode did was a tip of the iceberg. What he was able to do was in tandem with the manifestoes of the party. He did not do anything extraordinary. “Sanwo-Olu would also work with the manifestoes of the party. The combination of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat is a plus. Hamzat is a politician and a technocrat. He is well exposed and well read to be in government,” he said.

Creating aggressive campaigns to end plastic pollution Tundun Abiola Some environmentalists have called on the government and other stakeholders in the environment to start aggressive campaigns to change the public attitude and behaviour toward the use and disposal of plastics. They proffered solutions to plastic pollution in line with the theme of the 2018 World Environment Day which has its “Beat Plastic Pollution’’. Mr Richard Inyamkume, the Senior Programme Officer, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Initiative, said that the government and citizens should evolve practical strategies that would reduce the menace of plastic waste in communities. Inyamkume said that other methods of tackling the environmental issue involved public activism and legislation. “I believe in change of attitude as it can increase public consciousness about the impact of plastics on the environment while prompting alternative considerations for the use of plastics in the country. A campaign against improper plastic waste disposal can begin in the home-setting before going into the streets; it should make high impact and encourage plastics reuse, recycling and substitution,’’ he said. Inyamkume, however, underscored the need for the citizens to understand their specific roles in the campaign for a plastic-free environment. He noted that they should also be encouraged to organise regular community cleanup activities to clear plastic waste. “Besides, government and policymakers ought to review national legislation and policies so as to discourage the production of single-use disposable plastic materials, while encouraging the production and importation of environmentfriendly products. “Plastic pollution occurs where plastic materials are indiscriminately dumped in an area in such a way that it begins to impact negatively on the ecosystem,’’ he said. He said that the global community was planning to achieve clean, sustainable and pollution-free cities by 2030 and as such, efforts were underway to address plastic pollution. “In Nigeria, plastic pollution has increased over time due to the proliferation of plastics producing factories and a corresponding increase in the demand for plastic materials by the public. “These increases have come with attendant environmental consequences such as plastic pollution, mostly in urban and commercial areas, and there has not been enough public awareness or sensitisation on the proper methods of disposing plastics. “What usually constitutes plastic pollution includes but is not limited to single-use plastics such as plastic bags, water bottles, straws, cups, utensils, dry cleaning bags, take-away containers or disposable plastic materials,’’ he said. The environmentalist said that if not properly managed, plastic waste could affect life on land and in oceans or rivers. Inyamkume said that Nigeria should to join the global crusade to end plastic pollution because of its hazards to the environment. In his view, Mr David Michael, the Executive Director, Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, a non-governmental organisation, called for a total ban on single-use plastics if they could not be re-used or recycled. “We are advocating for a total ban of single use of plastics in Nigeria because plastics do not decay;

Plastic pollution

they remain in the soil, river and ocean for years,’’ he said. Michael urged producers of plastic packages to use biodegradable materials such as paper bags and leaf to package consumable products. He said that his organisation organised the neighbourhood clean-up in Jabi community, in collaboration with the Government Secondary School students in the FCT, to sensitise them to the need to control plastic waste in the country. “Plastics here in the Jabi community run off to Jabi Lake. If you see the quantity of plastics in Jabi Lake, you will never believe it. “That is why we chose this community that is very close to the Jabi Lake because all the wastes of the residents overflow to the lake; we want the students to understand that it is important to dispose waste safely. Clara Okpala, a student of Government Secondary School, Jabi, underscored the need to ban the production and utilisation of single-use plastics, observing that waste could harm and kill fishes and other marine creatures. Martins Obi, another student of the school, said that plastic waste often blocked water channels, thereby causing floods which displaced people from their homes. Oyedepo Joshua, a student and member of Eco-Club in Government Science and Technical College, Garki, said that the re-use of plastics through environmental creative arts would assist in the efforts to reduce plastic pollution in the country. Joshua, who used plastic bottles to create a chair, said that the re-use of plastics would assist in the efforts to address plastic pollution in the country. Vincent Davies, a student of Model Secondary School, Maitama, said that indiscriminate dumping of used nylon and plastics had been rampant on the school premises, calling for the erection of waste-bin stands to promote healthy environment.

Expressing concern about water pollution, Mr Sunday Agbontaen, the Head of Reservoir and Production Department, FCT Water Board Lower Usuma Dam, said that pollutants coming from Mpape community had increased the cost of water treatment. Agbontaen said pollutants in the water attracted toxins which were dangerous to human health, observing that the dam’s facilities had the capacity to screen the solid pollutants and disinfect the water for human consumption. “When the water comes in, even at the catchment area up the Mpape zone, we monitor the water quality; we also monitor non-water quality to know the type of treatment the water will go through. “So, in the treatment process, we will be able to understand that this amount of pollutant is higher in the water. “We need the number of chemicals to treat it in accordance to World Health Organisation and Nigeria Standard Organisation,’’ he said. The dam official said that a new plant would be designed to address the emerging pollutants such as plastics, steels and other pollutant substances. In efforts at checking pollution, the Ministry of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril, said that the Federal Government was developing a national plastic waste recycling programme to establish plastic waste recycling plants across the country in partnership with state governments. “At present, a total of eight plants have already been completed and handed over to the states while 18 others are at various stages of completion. “In addition, the Federal Government is also collaborating with state governments to establish plastic waste recycling plants under the community-based waste management programme in the ministry. “Therefore, two plants have been completed in Ilorin, one in Lokoja, while work on another is ongoing in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State,’’ he said.

Jibril advised officials of Food and Beverages Companies Alliance and some waste management stakeholders to implement the Extended Producer Responsibility policy. He explained that the policy was designed to promote the integration of environmental costs associated with goods throughout their life cycles into the market price of the products. Jibril also said that the implementation of the policy would go a long way in supporting efforts to clean the environment and make it pollution free. He urged food and beverages companies to set aside a certain percentage of their profits for a campaign to sensitise Nigerians to the need to collect and recycle plastics and plastic bottles. The minister urged the companies to encourage the recycling of plastic bottles and devise strategies that would motivate consumers to return the used bottles for recycling. Also, Mr Clem Ugorji, the Director, Public Affairs and Communications, West Africa Business Unit, Coca-Cola Nigeria, said that Food and Beverages Companies Alliance was working to create a framework that would ensure effective collection and recycling of bottles. Ugorji said that the alliance was working to become Extended Producer Responsibilitycompliant, while making it mandatory for all food and beverages companies to discharge their social corporate responsibility. In the same vein, Prof. Oladele Osibanjo, the National President, Waste Management Society of Nigeria, said that the society was collaborating with the alliance to organise a workshop to proffer solutions to the menace of plastic pollution in the country. Osibanjo, who said that the workshop would be held in Lagos, said that it would attract relevant stakeholders in the waste management sector. Deji Abdulwahab is of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Liberia: Thousands protest price hikes and corruption

Sudan’s pro-democracy leaders have vowed to continue civil disobedienc

Sudan opposition says it accepts Ethiopia PM as mediator

Sudan’s main alliance of opposition groups and protesters says it accepts Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a mediator in their political deadlock with the Transitional Military Council (TMC) under certain conditions. Among opposition demands are that the TMC take responsibility for the deadly dispersal of a protest sit-in on Monday, an international investigation into the incident is launched and political prisoners are released. Abiy spent Friday in Sudan’s capital, meeting with a coalition of political groups and parties representing protesters. He also met the members of the military council in capital Khartoum. “The military and the people and the political forces need to act with bravery and responsibility in taking quick steps to a democratic, reconciliatory transitional period in the country,” Abiy said in a statement. Abiy, 42, who took office in Ethiopia last year and introduced political and economic reforms, has won wide praise for his diplomatic skills, including brokering peace with his country’s neighbour and long-time foe Eritrea. His trip came after the African Union (AU) suspended Sudan’s membership on Thursday following the deaths of at least 108 people in Monday’s deadly sit-in attack. More than 500 were wounded in the raid, according to the opposition-linked Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors. A health ministry official, however, was quoted on Thursday as saying the death toll stood at 61. Al Jazeera is unable to independently confirm the differing figures after its journalists were ordered not to report from the country. Since the deadly assault,

fearful Khartoum residents have remained largely indoors, leaving the streets virtually deserted at a time when Muslims are normally out celebrating the Eid alFitrholiday. Soldiers from the feared Rapid Support Forces (RSF) - who have their origins in the notorious Janjaweed militia unleashed in the conflict in the western region of Darfur in 2003 and 2004 - have remained stationed in a number of the capital’s main squares. Others have been seen out on patrol in their trademark pickup trucks mounted with heavy machine guns or rocket launchers. “We’re living in a state of terror because of sporadic gunfire,” one unidentified resident of south Khartoum told AFP. The United Nations human rights office is seeking to send a monitoring team to Sudan to examine alleged violations during this week’s military crackdown, Rupert Colville, the agency’s spokesman told Al Jazeera on Friday. “We have made a formal request to the government to get the UN human rights monitoring team into the country as quickly as possible.” Colville said. “The Rapid Support Force should immediately be reigned in because this group has a chequered history. They appear to be at the centre of this week’s violence.” He added. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Awol Allo - a lecturer specialising in East African politics at Keele University - said Ethiopia stands the best chance as a third party in mediating an agreement to halt the violence. “If there are any external parties in the region who can bring the two sides together it would be Ethiopian prime minister and

government,” Allo told Al Jazeera. “That is partly because of Ethiopia’s own political weight in the AU ... [and] also because Ethiopia has largely remained neutral and impartial so far in the confrontation between the military council and the forces for freedom and change.” While Allo said there are limitations on Abiy’s mediation efforts, Ethiopia may be positioned to help the military reach an agreement that addresses the opposition’s demands. “Ultimately ... the best outline that is consistent with the demands of the revolution and international community is setting up a transitional government that gives the majority of the authority - the supreme authority - to a civilian body, not to the military,” said Allo. The AU’s Peace and Security Department said Sudan’s participation in all AU activities would be suspended with immediate effect “until the effective establishment of a civilian-led transitional authority”, which it described as the only way to “exit from the current crisis”. Sudan’s pro-democracy leaders have vowed to continue their campaign of civil disobedience until the TMC is removed and killers of protesters are brought to justice. However, the streets were quiet on Friday. Monday’s bloodshed marked a pivotal moment in the weeks-long struggle between the TMC and the opposition groups over who should lead Sudan’s transition to democracy. Al-Burhan has said the TMC was ready to resume negotiations with the opposition coalition. But the opposition rejected the offer, saying the military could not be trusted.

Thousands of demonstrators descended on Liberia’scapital, Monrovia on Friday to protest against rising prices and corruption, posing a key political test for President George Weah. Weah is being challenged over the same issues on which he campaigned in his rise to the presidency of the West African state 18 months ago. “George Weah has to listen to the cry of his people,” said Joseph Moore, 65, as he sang songs of inspiration to the protesters. About 10,000 people took part in the demonstration, according to the AFP news agency, while a police official put the turnout at around 4,000. Some held aloft placards reading: “We are tired of suffering” and “We want better living conditions.” Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reporting from Monrovia said most roads leading to parliament where protesters planned to gather were block by security forces. “Access to the grounds where the protest is taking place has been restricted by police. There are roadblocks on all roads leading to parliament. There is a lot of anger,” Idris said. “Protester feel let down by the government and George Weah. This is by far the biggest challenge the president has faced since he came to office.” Idris added. The global NetBlocks monitor said Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp were not working for Orange Liberia subscribers. The group tracks how governments interfere with internet access during politically sensitive periods. On Thursday, Weah issued a statement defending his record, blaming past governments for the country’s entrenched problems and sternly warning the protest organisers. “You can say whatever you want to, but be warned that cusses, insults and incitement of violence will never again be permitted under my administration,” he said. Weah, a former FIFA player of the year, is revered in Liberia and beyond for blazing a trail for African footballers in Europe. But he is struggling to revive a country that is one of the poorest in the

world and still traumatised by back-toback civil wars between 1989 and 2003 that claimed a quarter of a million lives. Rising prices are a major source of discontent. “Before, 500 LD (Liberian dollars; $2.50) was enough to adequately feed my family each day,” Angeline Flomo, a 35-year-old housewife and motherof-four, said. “Now, 1,000 LD can’t feed us. This is how bad things have become. A bag of 25 kilos of rice used to sell for 1,500 LD, now it is 2,800 to 3,000 LD. We are finding it difficult to make ends meet.” Fingers are being pointed at past and present managers of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL). Last October, rumours swirled that newly printed Liberian dollars worth $102m, intended for the CBL’s reserves, had disappeared shortly after arrival from abroad. Charles Sirleaf, the son of former president and Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, was detained in March with two other CBL figures. An independent probe found no money was missing, but flagged “concerns regarding the overall accuracy and completeness of the CBL’s internal records.” More irregularities came to light related to a cash injection of $25m that Weah ordered in July 2018 to mop up excess Liberian dollars and bring inflation under control. Weah, 52, says he is aware of the burden of ordinary people, and improvement to health, education and roads remain his priorities. “We have done much over the short time to [address] bad conditions, which, of course, are not our making,” he said on Thursday. “We met the hardship and inherited all the bad conditions and without making excuses, we are solving them.” The protesters are also demanding the establishment of a war crimes court to prosecute people who bear the greatest responsibility for atrocities during Liberia’s civil wars. Former President Charles Taylor was convicted of war crimes at the International Criminal Court though the charges were related to atrocities in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

Sprint: Divine Oduduru makes impressive showing in Texas

Reigning NCAA Division I 200m champion, Divine Oduduru, started his quest to become the second Nigerian man to successfully complete a sprint double at the Championships on an explosive note. Newsmen report that Oduduru made the impressive showing at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Thursday. Oduduru scorched to a windaided 10.96 seconds, the fastest time in the first round of the 100m event and 19.97 seconds, also the fastest time in the first round of the 200m event. The Texas Tech University

undergraduate student is bidding to become the second Nigerian after Olapade Adeniken to win the 100m and 200m titles at the same NCAA Division I Championships. Adeniken ran 10.09 seconds and 20.11 seconds in the colours of University of Texas in El Paso (UTEP) to successfully complete the sprint double at the championship in 1992. He thus, became the second African to achieve the feat following Namibian, Frankie Fredericks’ feat a year earlier for Brigham Young University. Oduduru will thus become the third African to win the two titles if

he succeeds in the finals on Saturday. It seems it is going to be difficult to bet against the Nigerian who has taken the collegiate track world by storm since bursting on the scene in 2018. He won the 200m outdoor title out of lane eight at the championships in Eugene in June 2018. This year, he has gone sub-20 in the 200m thrice and sub-10 in the 100m thrice – doing both in the span of a single hour at Baylor. He is only the tenth man in world history to achieve the feat on the same day. He is the only man in the world to have gone sub-20 thrice this season.

AFCON: Tanzania set to become first country to arrive Egypt Tanzania are set to become the first country to arrive in Egypt for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which will commence on June 21. The Taifa Stars will depart their training base in Dar es Salaam for Cairo on Friday, as they continue their preparation for the tournament. Coach Emmanuel Amuneke has named a 39man provisional squad for the competition, including a 15-year-old Kelvin John Pius, which he will prune down to 23. On June 13, the East Africans will play host

country Egypt in a friendly game, before they square up against Zimbabwe three days later in their final buildup match. Tanzania Football Federation media officer Clifford Ndimbo explained the Taifa Stars’ itinerary. “We are heading there early because it is the coach who planned for that,” Ndimbo told the Nation Sport. “The two friendlies are very important to enable the coach select his final 23-man squad from the travelling contingent of 32. “We have high expectations

from this tournament and are hoping to at least get out of the group and progress to the round of 16.” “Just like the matches involving Gor Mahia against Simba, our game against Kenya will be tough but entertaining as well. We are confident but it is a tough call.” The Taifa Stars have been paired along with West African giants Senegal, Kenya and Algeria in Group C. They will kick off their campaign in the biennial tournament against the Terenga Lions on June 23.

Ahmed Musa: I’m ever ready to fight for Nigeria Super Eagles’ assistant captain Ahmed Musa has vowed to give his best for the team when the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Egypt on June 21, saying he is always ever ready to play and perform well for Nigeria. The Al-Nassr FC of Saudi Arabia forward said this during a chat with Complete Sports at the team’s hotel in Asaba GRA on Friday morning ahead of the Super Eagles’ international friendly match against Zimbabwe at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba on Saturday. Musa joined the rest of his teammates along with fellow devote muslim, Shehu Abdullahi on Wednesday after been permitted by manager, Gernot Rohr to

observe the last day of Ramadan fasting and Sallah celebrations. He showed flashes of brilliance in Thursday’s training. “You all know me, that I am always ready to do well for Nigeria when I am on the pitch, I always like to score goals or make assists, but the most important thing is for the team to win matches,” the 26-year-old said “And as for the Nations Cup, I can tell you for a fact, that I am very much raring to go and give nothing but the very best of myself to see that we excel in Egypt.” On the possibility of Musa making a return to Europe in the nearest possible future, the pacy winger laughed and quipped: “You can google it for yourself to see how competitive the Saudi Arabia Professional Football League is and they even spend a lot of money in making it better.” He added: “I was not even the highest goal-scorer for my club last season as I scored only seven goals. The top-scorer found the back of the net 17 times. Anyways, I still have a contract with Al-Nassr and I love the club so much.” Musa will be looking forward to add to the 15 goals he has scored for Nigeria in 78 appearances in Saturday’s international friendly with Zimbabwe at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles players honour Stephen Keshi at second memorial lecture

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, led no fewer than 25 players in the team’’ camp in Asaba to the 2nd Stephen Keshi Memorial Lecture held in the Delta capital on Friday. Keshi died in June, 2017 and the memorial lecture was instituted by the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF). The eagles are currently camping in Asaba ahead of the friendly match with the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Saturday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. Rohr, at the side line of the event, lauded the qualities of late Keshi, and told newsmen that he (Keshi) made a mark in Nigerian football and abroad, as a player and a coach. He expressed delight that the lecture held at a time when the Eagles were camping in Asaba ahead of the African Nations Cup tournament beginning on June 21 in Egypt, and for a friendly match with Zimbabwe in Asaba. “I commend the association of professional footballers for keeping date with Keshi. Such association is necessary to seek the welfare of members after retirement from active play. “It is important that I bring all the players here as mark of respect and honour to Keshi,’’ Rohr said.

The Chairman, Delta Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, said that the lecture was to expose the younger generation to the times and achievements of Keshi, which made the state government to name Asaba Township Stadium after him. He said the lecture was a pointer to the fact that all players must prepare for life after football, adding that it may be challenging to those who failed to prepare for their future. According to him, like Keshi, the footballers must be dedicated, be objective and have a clear vision of what legacies they will leave behind. “Keshi started as a footballer, became the captain of the team, and later a coach of the Super Eagles, which he played for.’’ On his part, General Secretary of NANF, Austin Popo, said the occasion was to keep alive the legacies and memory of Keshi. He said that the lecture was among the promises the new leadership made after their election in 2018 to reposition the players’ union to truly represent and promote players’ right and interest in Africa and the world. “The annual Stephen Keshi memorial lecture and the youth

football tournament is one of such programmes. “We are already discussing plans on how both bodies can make the second edition of the Stephen Keshi U-17 and U-21 national football tournament a success, with Delta government providing support,’’ he said. Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean team comprising 25 players and eight technical crew arrived at the Hampton Hotel, Asaba, on Friday at about 11.30 am for the Saturday encounter. According to the Zimbabwean Coach, Sunday Chidzambwa, the team is here to play and learn from the more experienced Nigerian Super Eagles. The theme of the memorial lecture is “Life after Football: What Does the Country Owe Our Ex-Internationals?”

Caf President Ahmad released from custody

Caf President Ahmad Ahmad has been released from detention after being arrested in France on Thursday morning. The African chief was taken in for questioning after being accused of bribery, corruption and misappropriation of funds costing up to $830,000 after reportedly ordering equipment via a French intermediary company called Tactical Steel. The report claimed he was set to face the anti-corruption

agency’s Central Office for Combating Corruption and Financial and Tax Crimes (Ocliff). However, the African continental supremo has since been released, as confirmed in a statement to the press on Caf’s website, “The President of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), questioned in Paris on June 6th by the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption and Financial and

The 30-year-old was also the Super Eagles’ secondchoice goalkeeper at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia behind Uzoho. He has featured for clubs like defunct Ocean Boys, Sunshine Stars and FC IfeanyiUbah in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Ezenwa is eyeing his first ever AFCON appearance at Egypt 2019. He spoke to newsmen in Asaba about the upcoming AFCON 2019 assignment and the competition for the Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper spot. “I don’t care whether I am first choice or not, the most important thing is for Nigeria to do well at the African Cup of Nations and even possibly win the trophy,” Ezenwa said. “If the coach didn’t pick me

Fiscal Offences (Ocliff), was released from police custody without charges.” Marseille Prosecutor, Mr Xavier Tarabeux, added that Ahmad “was questioned as part of a probe into corruption, breach of trust and forgery.” The Caf boss was in the European nation to attend the Fifa congress, which brought about Gianni Infantino’s reelection as President of the governing body.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa: I support whoever is Super Eagles’ 1st-choice goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has assured that he will give 110 per cent support to whoever emerges as the Super Eagles’ first choice goalkeeper as his competition with Francis Uzoho and Daniel Akpeyi continues ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The Katsina United shotstopper has been a member of the Super Eagles for close to four years after making his international debut on September 8, 2015, but has not had a long-standing firstchoice status despite making 18 international appearances. He was the number one goalie for the home-based Super Eagles team that came second at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which took place in Morocco.

as the number one, I will give my 110 percent support to whoever mans the goal-post. if it is Francis Uzoho or Daniel Akpeyi, I am very okay with that, I will back anyone with my prayer.” On being the sole representative of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in the current Super Eagles’ setup, Ezenwa said: “I thank God for that. I promise not to fail the local league if I am chosen to be in goal for the Eagles when the AFCON proper starts. “I see this opportunity as a privilege because I believe that there are many good goalkeepers in our great country, Nigeria. But what is important is for us to go to Egypt and represent our nation well and if possible, win the trophy.”

Aruna Quadri wins crucial game Aruna Quadri proved bookmakers wrong on Thursday at the Hong Kong Open with an out-of-world performance against Chinese penholder Peifeng Zheng. Quadri was not even considered the favourite in the tie at the ongoing ITTF World Tour. Despite the unfriendly attitude of the Chinese in the encounter, Quadri was not deterred as he was bent on showing the young Asian that he would not fall for his antics. From the start of the first round of the men’s singles clash, Quadri’s forehand became the undoing of the Chinese as he could not

control the shots. The first game was close but Quadri won 12-10. The Oyo State-born star progressed his dominance with an 11-9 win in the second game. But the Chinese star was not ready to surrender the tie to the 2018 Nigeria Open champion with a 9-11 win over the Nigerian. To keep the lead, Quadri fought well to win the fourth game at 11-5. But several unforced errors cost Quadri the fifth and sixth games as the Chinese won 5-11 and 10-12 to put the encounter at 3-3. In the deciding seventh game, Quadri ensured he led from the start and this

paid off for him as he ended the dream of the 2018 Czech Open champion with an 11-5 win to complete his 4-3 victory in the first round of the men’s singles. Another challenge confronts Quadri in the second round (last 16) as the Nigerian will slug it out with the World Junior Champion, Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto, who edged out Sweden’s Jon Persson 4-2 in the first round. The Japanese teenager has been fluctuating in his performance in recent times and this may work in Quadri’s favour. According to ITTF, the encounter promises to be explosive at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, venue of the championship.

Chelsea appeal two-window transfer ban Chelsea have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being banned for two transfer windows. As things stand, Chelsea would be banned from signing players this summer and in January. The Premier League club appealed to Fifa to rescind the ban but footballing’s governing body declined the request. Now they have taken the case to CAS. CAS have the power

to freeze or overturn the ban but they could also deem Chelsea’s appeal frivolous. If they do, the Blues risk having an extra transfer window added to the suspension. With Maurizio Sarri likely to leave for Juventus, Chelsea could need a new manager for next season. Tempting a big name will be tricky without the chance to sign players. Star player Eden Hazard is expected to leave the club this
