Dean Whare

Talks Fatherhood Family the centre of attention for Whare. It’s not every day that a serious injury could be seen as a blessing. Especially for a professional athlete. However, for Panthers centre Dean Whare, a horror run of injuries afforded him the opportunity to be around his young family and take an even more active role in their upbringing.

The road to recovery from a potentially career-threatening injury is long and lonesome. The process requires toiling away in a gym and going through a gruelling process of rebuilding strength and confidence to return to the paddock. The mental recovery can often be just as difficult.

something Whare is taking for granted. He is determined to be a positive influence and role model.

2016 was a season to forget for Whare who was braced to make his return from a calf injury only to rupture his ACL in the lead-up to his comeback game and undergo seasonending surgery. Rather than be negative, he would use his lay-off to spend more time with daughters Mila (5) and Zahlia (3).

“When I was first told I was out for the year…I was sad for a week but being with my family and everything they did distracted me.”

The determination to be there for his family was none more evident than when he rushed home just days before the final of the Four Nations tournament to be by Natasha’s side for the birth of their second daughter.

“You only get a couple of months off a year so it (the injury) was sort of a blessing in disguise getting all that time off. I got to spend a lot more time with my family than I normally do,” said Whare.

4 • #PANTHERPRIDE

“In my early days of rehab, running and going to the gym, the kids were right there with me at training.” “It’s a pretty lonely road doing rehab by yourself but the whole time they were by my side and helped me through. It helped me come away much stronger.” Now fully fit and back in to the weekly routine of a rugby league player, time spent around his daughters and partner Natasha isn’t

“Every day off I have we’re trying to do as many things as we can together as a family and [I’m] trying to teach them as much as I can.”

Whare left the Kiwis training camp and flew back to Sydney before returning in time to take his place in the team as they defeated the Kangaroos to lift the trophy in their home country. “Natasha was booked in for a C-section so we knew when it was going to happen. I wanted to be there as support for her.”

feature

From left, Mila, Dean, Natasha & Zahlia in The Backyard

“I knew she had our families here (for support) but it would have been different if I wasn’t there for her.” “It’s an experience I never wanted to miss. In my mind I was always going to be there and if I had to miss the final I would’ve missed the final.” Now old enough to recognise that their dad plays football for a living, his daughters are there cheering him on whenever he steps on to the field and the first people he looks for as soon as the final siren sounds. “My little ones complain if they don’t come to the game.

They’re at every game…and love coming to training when they can.” “Win or lose or however sore I am, as soon as you see their faces it just makes everything better. “They give you a big kiss and everything bad just goes away. Seeing the support of my family there definitely helps me.” Despite his injury troubles, Whare’s attitude and determination in his recovery meant the Panthers were keen to secure his services for the long-term and agreed a fiveyear deal earlier this year.

After arriving from Manly Sea Eagles in 2013, it’ll bring his stay in Penrith to almost a decade. With his family settled in at the foot of the Mountains, Whare is pleased he can provide stability for his family. “My eldest (Mila) is going to primary school next year. She has got a lot of friends at preschool so having that stability and support for her was a big part of the decision to stay so long.”

Diesel An injection of DIESEL – Up close with the music legend 1.

What can fans expect from your upcoming live performances? We're looking forward to playing The Corner later this month to celebrate 30 years on the road & 25th Anniversary of my album "Hepfidelity". It's been a while since I played a lot of the tracks from that album, we're going to deconstruct them and "see what's under the hood" before we roll backwards through what now is 16 albums.

2. This tour is celebrating 30 years “off the bus” - the 3 day bus journey across Australia in 1987. What was your most memorable moment of that tour? Getting off the bus in Riley St. Darlinghurst at the bus depot only to return 3 days later to the same street, this time as an invited guest at Rhinoceros Studios for a Jimmy Barnes recording session. I was sleeping on our future manager's sofa and he was also playing drums on the session and asked if I could "tag along". At that point I thought Riley street was the centre of the universe... 3.

What would you like to be remembered for? I'm not sure I'm ready to think about that yet? But a good person would be a good start.

4. You have released several albums over the years with two of them reaching number 1 on the ARIA charts, what is it that inspires you with your music? Having chart success is a bonus, but it's the reaction I get from people when I play live that I ultimately feed off. This makes me want to make more music. 5.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? I honestly can't point out one particular moment. I've really been showered with so many affirmations, I do feel lucky in that respect. A good gig is a highlight, it comes but is fleeting, leaving you wanting another. The same can be said for recording, it's imperative that you become totally lost while you are in the process, but at the end of the day a record is just a "snapshot" of a song.

6. You have accomplished so much in your career – do you have any other career goals you hope to achieve? Only the eternal quest to write and play a great song, that is an ongoing saga, but I do enjoy the struggle!

See DIESEL live in our EVAN Theatre on Saturday 16 September. Tickets $42.55 and are available at our Reception or at Ticketek. PANTHERS.COM. AU • 15

Sticky Barbecued Ribs As the weather begins to warm up slowly and we start to pull out our BBQs, this recipe from Executive Chef of Panthers Group, Tim Wesley, is a sure hit for rib fans.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

• • • •

1. 2. 3. 4.

1kg pork ribs 375ml bottle Tooheys Old 60ml orange juice 240ml smoky barbecue sauce • 80ml malt vinegar • 6 cloves garlic crushed • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger

Cut the ribs into smaller racks of 4-6 ribs per portion. Mix together Tooheys Old and the rest of the ingredients. Marinate the ribs overnight in the fridge. Add the ribs and marinade to a wide saucepan, cover and bring to the simmer over low heat. 5. Cook gently for 1 hour turning the ribs occasionally to make sure they are covered with the liquid. 6. Remove the ribs from the pan and increase the heat to reduce the marinade, cook for 10 minutes or until reduced to thicken slightly. 7. Pre-heat the barbeque grill to a medium to high heat. 8. Cook the ribs for 8 minutes brushing with the thickened glaze and turning occasionally. 9. Serve immediately. PANTHERS.COM. AU • 21
