MG: Random Westie Penrith great Mark Geyer chats to us about the reality of life after footy, how working out helps his mental and physical health, his childhood dream of becoming a Policeman and his proudest moments.

Your first grade debut was in a derby against the Eels. What do you remember about it? It was 1986 and I was 18. We were playing against Parramatta, the guns of the competition and my dad’s favourite side. It was a TV game. I played under 23’s that day, then reserve grade and then first grade, with only 10 minutes to go. Ray Warren called me Mark Gayer. That was my run on debut and my first grade debut was a year later against the Bulldogs. They were a really hard pack to play against. You never forget the first time you put on the jersey and run out for your initial game. You never think it’s going to happen and when it does its surreal. What did being selected on the 1990 Kangaroo tour mean to you? I was told before the 1990 Grand Final that it was out of me and another bloke from the Canberra side. Whoever played best would go on the tour. Because we were beaten I thought that my chances were pretty slim. We went back to the club and the names of the Penrith players who made the tour were read out, they were: Greg Alexander, Brad Fittler and John Cartwright and then there was a long pause, then they said ‘and Mark Geyer’. I thought ‘oh wow, that was unexpected’. 4 • #PANTHERPRIDE

To go on a three month tour with blokes you’ve been watching from a far was big. Sometimes reputations would precede people. You’d hear about Brad Clyde from Canberra and Laurie Daley and these blokes up in Brisbane. Then when you spend time with them you realise they also miss their family and get homesick, just like you do. I think this experience helped the four of us the following year. The tour broke down the walls of invincibility. We had these guys up on a pedestal. I think that helped us win the comp. What advice would you give your 21 year old self? Make the most of every opportunity and enjoy everything that comes your way, because it will be gone before you know it. Try and set yourself up for life after football. I was lucky that things fall into place but I’m a minority. What are your proudest moments off the field? Being a dad and a husband. When you have other people to worry about it lifts your game. My family make me want to be a better person, they mean everything to me.

What was life like in the first few years after you retired from football? When I retired in 2000 I was 32, I had three kids, a wife and no Plan B. I thought I was going to continue playing, but quickly realised I couldn’t. I worked for a sponsor of the club and went from $400,000 a year as a footballer, down to $750 a week. It was a big reality check and I had anxiety over it. I decided that I wanted to be in the media so I said yes to everything that came my way. I started on C91.3FM in Campbelltown, then 2SM, I wrote a column for Rugby League Week and I did Dead Set Legends. In 2009 I auditioned

PANTHERS.COM. AU • 5

for The Grill Team on Triple M and thankfully got the job. It’s something I never thought I’d be doing but I can’t imagine not doing it now.

For footballers, I’d say that it’s only a sport, it’s only a 10 year period of your life (if you’re lucky), that you need to knuckle down and do your best.

What one piece of advice would you give young footballers who are thinking about life after football? Always have a Plan B. Have one eye on your football career and the other on life post football. While you’re in the moment football consumes every part of your being, but there’s another 50 years of life to live after that. A lot of people don’t think about that, hence why they get down on themselves and get into a rut. While rugby league should be your number one priority when you’re playing, it’s healthy to have other interests.

The second thing I’d say is talk to somebody. With my fitness training, I train with three or four other blokes and the best part is that for half an hour we walk and talk, without alcohol so we don’t talk crap. We talk candidly about our issues and when we get back from the walk we feel good. I think that’s what makes us keep doing it every day.

You’re still in great shape even though you’re not training for football anymore. What do you do to keep yourself fit? I’m probably training harder now than I did when I was a footballer because no-one’s telling me too. I used to hate turning up to training and seeing witches hats and tackle bags out. I would dread it, but it was more mental than anything. Now, it’s a focus, I want to do it, so much so that a mate and I started an online fitness business called Wild Panther Fitness. I train every day for about half an hour when I get home from work. Then I walk the dogs for another half hour. So I dedicate an hour a day. I have one day off a week which is usually a Saturday or Sunday. But when I don’t train I feel sick. Working out is a release now, that’s what gets my endorphins going. With training I believe that it’s healthy body, healthy mind. We hear about depression a lot in the media today, especially in sportspeople. What is your advice to those who may be suffering? The first thing I’d say is that you’re not alone. Often it’s about the perception of not living up to expectations that contributes to feeling down. 6 • #PANTHERPRIDE

If you hadn’t been a footballer, what do you think your career would have been? I wanted to be a Policeman. In Year 10 we had to do two weeks of work experience so I went to Redfern, back when the Police Academy was there. I did that when I was 16 and a year later I was playing for Penrith, so I didn’t get a chance to exercise that option. But I’ve got a lot of respect for the Police and what they do and what they put up with. GAME TIME: We gave MG 6 words or names and he had to say what they meant to him in one or two words. Penrith Panthers My Team Wally Lewis Formidable Royce Simmons Legend Life Exuberant Trump Controversial Mark Geyer Random Westie Watch the Footy with MG: You can watch the footy with MG on Saturday 10 June in TC’s Sports Bar, 5.30pm kick off. Escape the cold Penrith weather by sending yourself to Hawaii using the points you earn at any of our venues.

22 • #PANTHERPRIDE

From relaxation to historical visits, swimming with dolphins, hikes, shopping and city living in Waikiki, Oahu is the place to be this year. Prepare to go on a whirlwind trip of beautiful Hawaii right now. WAIKIKI BEACH The ultimate place for fun and relaxation, Waikiki Beach spans across 2 miles and could be split into 8 beaches. From surfing, stand up paddle boarding, snorkelling or simply chilling out you will be amazed at the crystal clear water – and the fantastic temperature. You can buy a blow-up doughnut from your local ABC Store (88 general stores all over Waikiki) and relaxing in the water. HANAUMA BAY Hanauma Bay is a must do for your Oahu island itinerary. Located within driving distance from Waikiki, you can swim in pristine water and get acquainted with a plethora of fish and marine life via snorkelling. It is best to visit Hanauma Bay early in the morning or midafternoon to beat the rush of tourists. When the car park is full, no other cars are permitted in Hanauma Bay. But if you do get stuck, visit Makapuu Point and Lighthouse.

PEARL HARBOUR If you want history then the place to visit is definitely Pearl Harbour. The spot where the US involvement in WWII began has become a shrine after it was attacked in 1941. In the massive attack on Pearl Harbour, one of the ships that sank was the USS Arizona. Today you can stand above the wreckage of the ship and see it in all its glory. You can purchase entry into Pearl Harbour for $1 but you must be there before it opens. Alternatively, you can purchase a tour through your hotel to guarantee a time to visit. DIAMOND HEAD Interested in a short hike to see one of the most beautiful views of Hawaii? Well climbing Diamond Head State Monument is for you. This 760-foot tuff crater is one of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks. It is only a short drive from Waikiki to Diamond Head. SHOPPING Hawaii is a shopaholic's dream with lots of locations to choose from. We recommend starting on Kalakaua Avenue where you can enjoy all the big brands like Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Tiffany & Co. Then move to Ala Moana Shopping Centre, which is the world's largest outdoor shopping centre. For extreme bargain hunters, head to Waikele Premium Outlet. It boasts 50 outlets with up to 65% off. If you're up for

more, head to Ross Dress for Less, there are three Ross stores in Waikiki, but be prepared to shift through racks in order to find your golden nugget.

HIRE A CAR If you really want to be adventurous, why not hire a car for a day? You can travel around the majority of Oahu within a day, including stopping at popular surfing destination Pipeline, visiting the set of several movies and TV shows at Kualua Ranch and Dole Pineapple plantation. Why not spend that little bit extra and hire a car you might never drive again like a Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro. PLAN YOUR HOILDAY NOW! Todd is coming to Penrith 2017 marks 20 years since Todd McKenney immersed himself in the colourful musical patina and life of the late, great Peter Allen, assuming his character in the legendary musical, ‘Boy From Oz’. Todd was warmly embraced by Peter’s family as he prepared for the role, and they’ve remained lifelong friends. His contribution to the memory and legacy of Peter Allen is enormous, and so over the years he has continued to play musical homage to this great entertainer. This association spawned the live event, “Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen”, and it has continued to sell out, season after season. And so on this, the eve of the 20th anniversary of Todd’s association with Peter Allen and ‘Boy From Oz’, Todd is delighted to bring his 2017 national tour, “Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen, 20th Anniversary Tour” to Panthers. This revamped and updated 2017/2018 version of his show features more Peter Allen songs than ever before, plus plenty of new stories and laughs along the way. “Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen, 20th Anniversary Tour” showcases Todd’s incredible talents. You’ll laugh,

you might cry and you’ll certainly be entertained by one of the nation’s best-loved performers, a multitalented star who donned his dancing shoes at the tender age of three. It was when he landed the role of Peter Allen in ‘Boy From Oz’ 18 years ago that he found his true passion. The original 1998 production of ‘Boy From Oz’ made Todd McKenney a household name. He’s the all singing, dancing, Aussie stage sensation with a wonderful acerbic wit and irreverent sense of humour. This show is not only Peter Allen’s hits, Todd also includes songs from some of his earlier musical theatre performances and you’ll hear stories and anecdotes of Peter, as well as those from Todd’s time on national television and the entertainment circuit. Got a question? Call it out during the show and Todd may just answer you back! You’re most welcome to score Todd’s performance, in fact why not bring your score cards with you, but please do be kind – a gentle warning, be careful, as he can give as good as he gets! Join Todd for an action packed night of fun and live entertainment, as he brings “Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen, 20th Anniversary Tour” to EVAN Theatre on Friday 26 May, tickets $59.85.

money matters

Tips to buying a home If you want to get into the housing market in 12 months or less, check out the below tips. Get your savings in order Depending on how much deposit is required, you can put a budget plan in place for the year ahead by cutting down on expenditure and considering ways to earn more money. Get your credit ready It’s essential that your credit history is in as good a shape as possible. This means going over your credit report and ensuring everything is accurate. If you identify any mistakes, now is the time to correct them. Your credit history will be helped further by paying off any outstanding debts. Brush up on the details There are plenty of small, peripheral expenses and fees that are part and parcel of applying for a home loan. This might include tax implications, administration and bank fees, stamp duty, legal

fees, builder’s fees and more. Other important considerations are the median price for homes in your suburb of choice and home loan interest rates – both of which can fluctuate in a year. You could also consider attending auctions without bidding, in order to develop a feel for the market. Decide if you need expert advice Expert advice is another potential cost, but there are benefits in engaging them. Whether it’s a buyer’s agent, accountant or real estate broker, their knowledge and specialisation could save you money in other areas – not to mention guiding you through some of the more technical aspects of buying a home. When you are ready to purchase a home, talk to a Pepper Money Lending Specialist to discuss your home loan options on 1300 839 359 or speak to an accredited Pepper Money Broker. PANTHERS.COM. what would you do?

What would you do? We give away $40,000 cash every 4 weeks as part of our Cash King Draw. We wanted to know how you would spend the money if you won, so we asked 6 of our members, here’s what they had to say.

David Wright

Kaye Denovan

Gaye Booth

If I won the $40,000 prize money I’d treat my wife and myself to a holiday in the Philippines so we could enjoy spending time with our family.

I would go halves with Tom Kline and I would go on a River Cruise starting in Amsterdam, going through Europe, spending a lot of time in Venice. I love Venice.

If I won the $40,000 I would put some of it towards the new car that we just bought and some on our credit card.

Paul Haydec

June Akrap

I’ve got my Mother’s 90th Birthday coming up shortly so that would help to pay for the birthday party. If there’s anything left over I’d go on a surfing holiday to Hawaii.

I would go up to Queensland and visit my daughter and grandchildren. I’d stay somewhere near the Beach, probably Red Cliff, near Morton Bay.
