If you’re unfamiliar with Pullman and the surrounding area, you’ll quickly determine for yourself the reason why so many others have chosen to make it their home. Ranked by Bloomberg Business, as the best small town in Washington to raise kids, Pullman is home to Washington State University (ranked in the top 60 best state universities by U.S. News and World Report), has a near-invisible crime rate, and regional healthcare services that are consistently rated in the top three percent of the country. Pullman’s business climate is robust. With a thriving technology sector and opportunities for new business, the area is fueling it’s growth through its active Palouse Knowledge Corridor. If you’re looking to relocate or start a new company, Pullman is “open for business” and able to help you with your efforts! Meet the Board of Directors Adina Bielenberg A
a her family have been a and p of the Palouse for over part 1 years. She was born in 100 P Pullman, is a Genesee High g graduate and earned degrees i psychology and consumer in studies from the University of Idaho. She is the Executive Assistant to the President and manages the Public Affairs Department for Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. “I am honored to have the opportunity to represent SEL on the Pullman Chamber of Commerce board and thrilled to be actively engaged with the Pullman community”. She currently serves on the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Association of Washington Business boards. Adina and husband Blake have two children, Mackenzie 11 and Preston 9. A ASWSU President
Riley Myklebust graduR a ated from Lewis and Clark High S School in Spokane, Washington. G Growing up, he was very close t his family and still talks to to his mom eeveryday on his way to class. Currently a senior at Washington State, he is pursuing his degree in Elementary Education. Riley is an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and has lived in the SigEp house his entire stay at WSU. During his freshman year, Riley was elected as a district 10 senator and was chosen to be the student representative on the Pullman Police Advisory Board. The following year, he was re-elected as a senator for district 10 as well as elected by the senate as Pro Tempore. His junior year, Riley was hired as the Director of the Student Entertainment Board (SEB) where he oversaw events such as homecoming, Cougfest, and various other concerts. In his free time, Riley enjoys working out, being active in his fraternity, and bonfires with his friends. Carol Chipman is a C
c co-owner of Chipman and T Taylor Chevrolet. She was born a raised in Mountain Home, and I Idaho, and graduated from t University of Idaho. She the h lived in Pullman since she has and her husband purchased the Brown and Holter Chevy-Olds dealership in 1976. Carol
has served on several community boards and committees, and is currently beginning her third term as a Director of the Chamber of Commerce Board. She loves the unique beauty of the rolling hills, and the progressive, vibrant environment present in Pullman due to the university. Carol sees the Chamber as vital for the health of Pullman, and is happy to contribute to it.
Doug Cox graduated from D W with a degree in Ag BusiWSU n (’93). Doug is employed as ness a Vice President & Commercial L Lender at Columbia Bank and h provided lending services has i Pullman since 1999. Pullin man activities include Kiwanis, Palouse Discovery Science Center board President, Pullman Civil Service Commission, Pullman Junior Miss Fundraising chairman & is a WSU student athlete mentor. His hobbies include hunting, scuba, snow & water skiing. Doug’s wife Amy works in the College of Education and together they have 2 kids, Hunter (12) and Reagan (9) attending LMS & Sunnyside Elementary. SSam Dial is the owner of
SSam Dial Jewelers. With family tties to rural Whitman County ggoing back over 100 years, he iis an area native graduating ffrom Potlatch High School and a degree from the University of Idaho in Secondary education. Community involvement has been a priority to him his entire life and he is currently a Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation Director and a Pullman Rotary member. Sam’s wife Tanya works at Pullman Regional Hospital and together they have four kids. Sam’s main vision for Pullman is to be a leading destination for commerce in the region.
Marie Dymkoski, M E Executive Director, has lived in t small community of Palouse the f over 20 years. She comes for t the Chamber with many to d different job experiences, and d describes herself as a “Jane of all trades”. Marie, along with her husband Mike, has four children, Jennifer, Kristin, Matthew, and Mitchell, and three grandchildren. Marie is involved in Boy Scouts, Palouse Audubon Society, Palouse Commu-
nity Center and the WSU Student-Athlete Mentor Program. Marie enjoys the work of the chamber and believes that the Palouse is the best place to live, work and do business. “I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be,” says Marie.

ttor of Athletic Marketing at W Washington State University. H He returned to the Northwest 4 years ago after living in Utah & Maryland for the previous sseven years. He has worked in the athletic departments at the University of Utah, the United States Naval Academy & Eastern Washington University. He grew up in Walla Walla and attended the University of Oregon for undergraduate and Eastern Washington University for Graduate School. His wife Heidi attended WSU and they enjoy the family atmosphere in Pullman. Casey and Heidi have two sons, CJ, who is three and Bo, who was born in March of last year.
JJ. Thomas Handy Jr, is
a Former President of the Pullm man Chamber of Commerce B Board of Directors and owner o of Paradise Creek Brewery, and L Landmark Property Developm ment. Born in Wisconsin, Tom has resided in Pullman for over 27 years. He appreciates the small town atmosphere with the mix of big city influences that Pullman offers. Tom says that Pullman is not just a great place to raise and educate children; it is also a friendly business community that has a can-do forward thinking city administration. This is his eighth year on the board, and Tom says that the chamber gives him an opportunity to be active in an organization that truly makes a positive impact on the prosperity of Pullman and the surrounding area.
Colleen Harrington is C a attorney and partner in the an l firm of Irwin, Myklebust, law S Savage and Brown, P.S., where s specializes in civil litigashe t tion. She attended Washington S State University for her undergraduate degree and following graduation, managed the Fairco gas station on Grand Avenue for several years. Colleen moved to

the Bay Area and attended the University of San Francisco Law School and graduated in 1986. Following graduation, she and her husband moved back to Pullman. Since her return, Colleen has been very active in the Pullman Community; she has had two six year terms with the United Way of Pullman Board of Directors, serving as campaign chair and board president. Colleen has also served as the president of the Whitman County Humane Society and she is the immediate past president of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce.
Charlene Jasper owns C
D Daily Grind Espresso, LLC a Licks Unlimited and is and c currently serving her fourth t term as a Pullman Chamber of C Commerce Board of Director m member. She is originally from Walla Walla, and has lived in Pullman for 28 years. Charlene appreciates the small town community spirit and the opportunities that Pullman offers her to get involved. Being a member of the business community requires an obligation on her part, she says, to give back to the community. Being on the Board of Directors allows Charlene to contribute to the experiences that both the business community and residents in Pullman enjoy. F Former President
Glenn Johnson is the G
M Mayor of Pullman and a Professsor in the Edward R. Murrow C College of Communication at W WSU. One of his other jobs iis serving as the “Voice of the Cougars”. Glenn is in his 32nd year as the public address announcer for all WSU football and men’s basketball games. He has resided in Pullman for the past 33 years. Glenn serves on the executive team, as a former president, and on the board of the Association of Washington Cities. AWC is an organization that represents all 281 cities in Washington. He is also chair of the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Board of Directors and volunteers on a number of chamber committees—Fourth of July (chair); Artesians, Government Affairs and volunteers with Lentil festival and Cabaret.
Paul Kimmell currently P
sserves as the Regional Business M Manager for Avista Corporattion. He was the former exeecutive director of the Moscow C Chamber of Commerce from 22001-2006 as well as serving
three terms as a Latah County Commissioner. Kimmell has a BS in Geography/Urban Planning from Illinois State University and did graduate work in land management at the University of Idaho. He presently serves as chair of the Inland Northwest Partners, president of the Latah Economic Development Council, board member to the Inland Northwest Economic Alliance, Pullman United Way and past chair of the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee. Paul is married to Constance and has three grown children.

iis the Property Director of the H Holiday Inn Express and Suites aand is also a past Chamber P President. She has lived in P Pullman for 19 years, and is o originally from Tacoma. Allison appreciates the very family oriented community that allows her and her husband to both have careers and stay close to home. Although her two children are now in college they loved growing up in Pullman and had fabulous experiences at our excellent schools. Allison enjoys being a board member as it gives her wonderful opportunities to share information and her ideas with others. Allison also serves on the United Way Board, Palouse Marketing Committee and the Lodging Tax Advisory Board.

tthe store manager of Dissmore’s IIGA since August 2007. Since h his arrival, he has been acttive in the community with sseveral events such as Palouse C Cares, National Lentil Festival, Cabaret, and the Whitman County Humane Society. Trev feels that it is very important for businesses to get involved in the community. “I feel that through the support of events and a strong community involvement we will all be successful. I am honored to be a member of the board representing Dissmores and the business community. Remember that communities build business, so let’s all work together and be involved!”

w wife Stacy have lived on the P Palouse since June of 1994. He iis currently the store manager o of Crimson & Gray where he h has worked since the opening o of the store in August of 2004. Prior to that, Chuck worked at the Bookie on campus for ten years as the textbook department manager and later Book Divi-
sion manager. Chuck feels that the Pullman Chamber of Commerce is the heart of the community and is excited to a part of the board of directors. F Former President
Theresa Myers is the coT
o owner of Myers Auto Rebuild aand Towing. She is from Kent, aand has lived in Pullman for 33 yyears. Theresa loves the small ttown lifestyle in Pullman, and she adds that it is a great place to raise kids, due to the great schools. There is a variety of cultural and sporting events in the region, and she enjoys being so close to outdoor recreation opportunities and likes to watch the seasons change. As a member of Board of Directors, she finds it meaningful to help build a vital economic base for the citizens of Pullman, and to promote Pullman and the region as a great place to live and do business. Theresa says that it is important to educate people that Pullman has many great businesses and that they don’t need to go out of town to find what they need, as it is offered right here in town.
Bobbie Ryder is the SeB n Campus Planner for Washnior i ington State University. As a L Landscape Architect and Plann she works with major and ner, m minor capital projects, campus m master plans, and environmental review. She is Co-chair of the recently established WSU Arboretum & Wildlife Conservation Center, the WSU Land Use Committee, and provides staff support to several University Committees (Historic Preservation, Campus Arts, Campus Landscape, Campus Master Planning). Bobbie is also a board member of the Pullman Civic Trust and the College Hill Association. She was raised in a Navy military family and moved from one coast to the other growing up. She and her husband, Karl Johanson, have lived on the Palouse for 34 years and raised four children in the exceptional Pullman Public School system. Bobbie believes that the heart of economic development starts with creating an atmosphere where people want to be. People want a vibrant downtown, attractive and affordable housing, good schools, access to medical care, a safe community, cultural events, grocery stores and shopping, and good employment opportunities; all qualities readily found in Pullman.

Gary greatt place to appreciates the friendly people in Pullman and the uniqueness of living in a small community combined with the advantages of a large University. Gary finds his position on the Board of Directors to be meaningful since he enjoys being involved in the community and helping out whenever possible. He is also involved in Rotary, Pullman Hospital Foundation, Church activities, Fraternity advising and of course watching Cougar sports events. Gary and his wife Sue, an elementary teacher, find Pullman a great place to live, work, and do business while raising their family.
Paul Sturm is the superinP t tendent of the Pullman School D District and has been a member o the chamber since moving of t Pullman in 2002. He is a to c current member and past chair o the Artesians and continues of to be involved with the Government Affairs committee. Paul and his wife, Nadine, love Pullman and Eastern Washington with its diverse climate and environments, along with the array of outdoor activities, and arts, entertainment, and athletic events. Both of them believe that the Palouse is a premium place to live and work. Being a member of the Chamber and the Chamber Board is a way to learn about the perspective of the business community. Paul views the School District’s role in providing learning opportunities for students and families to be a vital element of the quality of life and for the economic development of the area. Membership in the Chamber and on the Board is a satisfying way to give back to the community for its generous commitment to its schools and other city and county service to families. JJoan Swensen is a native o The Palouse where she was of r raised on a farm between Mosc and Genesee. Her 20’s were cow s spent in the Bay Area (Californ then back to Moscow and nia) e except for four years in Pennsylvania as a private chef, she has been doing restaurants since ‘81, starting with the Main
Street Deli. Joan has been at Swilly’s as Exec. Chef since ‘95 and purchased the restaurant in 2003. She recently served on the board of the UofI Prichard Art Gallery. When not playing restaurant, Joan can be found riding her blind dressage horse, painting and collecting art, collecting wine for her private cellar, tending her perennial and vegetable garden, throwing dinner parties for friends, and hanging out with her dog Kisha, and her feline roommates Tigger, Winnie and Fritz. Joan really enjoys serving on the board of the Pullman Chamber with some of her favorite customers and friends!
Mike Waite is a past presiM
d dent of the Chamber’s Board o of Directors, and is a Financial R Representative for Northwesteern Mutual Financial Network. H He is from Weiser, Idaho and h has lived in the Palouse Region for over 20 years. Mike enjoys the small town hospitality of Pullman, with the amenities typically found only in larger cities. He finds that being a member of the Board of Directors is meaningful because it gives him the opportunity to be proactive in the community, and to promote Pullman as a great place to live and do business.
F Former Chamber President SSusan Weed (1996997) is co-owner and Office M Manager for NewsTalk1150 K KQQQ-AM and HitRadio104.3 K KHTR radio stations. She is a long term me member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and also serves as a Member of the Pullman School District Board of Directors, as well as on the Pullman Civil Service Commission, The Pullman Regional Hospital Auxililary, The Whitman County Commision on Salaries for Elected Officials. She was born and raised in Seattle. Susan and her husband Bill have owned and operated Pullman’s radio stations for the past 37 years. Susan says that Pullman has been a wonderful place to raise their 3 kids, and she loves going to businesses and knowing that she can trust the person behind the counter. She believes that if you care deeply about something, like she does about our community, then it is important to be involved. Being a Board member gives Susan the satisfaction of knowing that she is helping to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business!

Pat Wright is another long P
tterm member of the Board of D Directors, and, another former C Chamber President. Since her rretirement as General Manaager of The Bookie, Pat has remained active in the Pullman community. She enjoys working part-time at Neill’s Flowers and Gifts and on the Pullman City Council. In addition to being a Chamber of Commerce Board member, Pat is Past President and Membership Chair of Pullman Regional Hospital Auxiliary and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pullman Education Foundation. Pat has lived in Pullman since 1975. She is originally from New York, and moved to California before residing in Pullman. She says that Pullman is a wonderful, safe place to raise a family, to enjoy the many amenities offered through the university and to appreciate the closeness and warmth of a small community in terms of living, working, and doing business. By being a Board member, Pat says that she has the opportunity to promote Pullman and all that it offers, and is a way for her to develop strong business relationships that provide a gateway to participate in different projects and activities that truly make a difference in the community.
Mike Yates is the current M C Chamber President, and is the P President of Very Cool Spaces, L LLC, a Pullman-based Business a Property Development and C Company. Primarily focused o the redevelopment and on adaptive re-use of the downtown core, Mike is the co-founder and business consultant of several companies and mixed-use developments in the Pullman area, including; BellTower Concert House & Event Venue, Market Square Lofts & Retail, Combine Mall Building and Prune Orchard-Details for Living/Gift Store. Originally from Seattle and while still working in the Technology Industry, Mike and his wife Debbie made a “lifestyle-decision” to move their family to Pullman. Now after 14 years, he acknowledges that “moving to the Pullman area was the best decision they ever made, and would recommend it to anyone that wants a better way of life!”

The Pullman Chamber of Commerce is your voice to government in Pullman, Olympia and Washington D.C. We concern ourselves with issues that impact business and the livability of the Pullman community at large. We work closely with City and County officials and have a seat on the Association of Washington Business Board. When you join the Pullman Chamber of Commerce you are being heard.
Members may submit information about their business for inclusion on the Chamber pages of the Pullman Community Update. This newsletter is sent to more than 14,000 city residents. Showcase new product lines, business changes, and your upcoming events. Information must be supplied 45 days in advance of the month you wish to have your information appear.
Periodically, the Chamber sponsors workshops to help equip you in your business dealings or to update you on changing regulations.
Networking
This printed guide is produced annually and lists all Chamber members by business category, as well as alphabetically. The directory also includes community profile information. It is sent to those requesting relocation information, is available to in-person visitors, and delivered to fellow Chamber of Commerce Members. In addition, the 2012 Membership Directory will be inserted into the Moscow Pullman Daily News for distribution.
The Pullman Chamber of Commerce provides numerous opportunities to meet other business leaders in our community.
General Membership Luncheons Normally scheduled the second Tuesday of each month from 12 –1 p.m., these catered events are opportunities to mingle with other business leaders, learn about the Pullman community in general, or learn about current business issues. Plan to promote your business during Soapbox time, allowing you up to sixty seconds to highlight your business or organization. Sponsor a luncheon and receive additional opportunity to promote your business.
Business After Hours These events provide opportunities for host businesses to show off their facilities and products, as well as an informal time of socializing and “catching up with your fellow Chamber members.” Food and beverages are provided by the host business.

Business Card and Literature Display The Chamber of Commerce offers a business card and literature display in our 24-hour accessible foyer. We also offer space inside the office. Hundreds of people visit the office each month providing excellent exposure for your business.
Mailing Labels Members can purchase the entire membership mailing list on labels for $25. Non-members can purchase the lists for $50 on labels. We do not provide the list digitally or on disk.

Relocation Inquiries List
The Pullman Chamber of Commerce website contains a full directory of our members including business name, address, phone number, and web link. Members are listed alphabetically, as well as by business category. Our website receives hundreds of hits a day, increasing the visibility of our member businesses.
An excellent way to target new residents to the community is mailing information before they arrive in town. Each month the names and addresses of those requesting information can be purchased from the Chamber for $10.
Chamber Email News This weekly email keeps members up to date about various Chamber activities and projects, as well as to alert areas of criminal activity affecting members. Members can submit information on upcoming events or special programs.
Relocation Packet Inserts Chamber members can supply brochures, fliers, or coupons designed for new residents to the Palouse region for inclusion in relocation packets. This is a free service for Chamber members. Members need to provide 100 inserts at a time to the Chamber office. Information should be no larger than one sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper (can be folded).
Bulk Mail Stamp The US Post Office offers reduced prices on presorted bulk mail if certain requirements are met. The Chamber’s bulk mail permit number is available for members to use.
Certificates of Origin This official stamp provides proof to businesses and governments that the goods being shipped were produced in the United States. Many international firms request such proof.
Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings These events are provided for new members as a welcome to the community and are also available for business members who are expanding or dedicating new facilities.
Small Business Service The Chamber has a large network of business connections. Whether you are looking for sites, developers or counseling, the Chamber can point you in the right direction. We work closely with the Small Business Development Center and the local Economic Development agencies to provide support for our business community.
Membership Decal Study shows that when a consumer knows a small business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Display your decal proudly. The decal is an important way to tell your customers you support the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Look for this logo when shopping in Pullman.
General Membership Luncheon Sponsorship Opportunity Promote your business by sponsoring the Pullman Chamber of Commerce General Membership Luncheon. Sponsors receive tent cards on each table recognizing them for their sponsorship and are given a 3-5 minute speaking opportunity to highlight their business. Chamber Committees The Pullman Chamber of Commerce has developed the following committees to aid in the effort to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business. New members, thoughts and creative ideas are always welcome. Agriculture/Business Ron Wachter This committee fosters the issues pertaining to the agricultural community and supports the need to grow and develop the agricultural industry. Projects: 4th of July BBQ, Ag Outlook Conference in February and Port Tour in November.
Artesian Ambassadors Bill Skavdahl An honorary branch of the chamber, whose members act as representatives at ground breakings, grand openings, dedications and other events. Membership is based on service to the chamber.
Business Development Charlene Jasper The Business Development committee is a group of local business people and retailers who meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues affecting the business environment. This committee also plans promotional opportunities for the Pullman business community.
Cabaret Amberly Boone Cabaret is the major fund raising event for the chamber. Held each spring, this formal affair has live and silent auctions, live music, dinner and dancing. This group is always looking for people with a creative flair!

through joint marketing activities. Projects: Visitor’s Guide, Advertising Campaigns, Brochures, Excursion Tours, and workshops.
This committee considers, reviews and acts on local, state and national issues that directly affect the Pullman community. It also strives to inform chamber members of these issues and increase overall awareness. Business growth and retention is the priority of this committee. This includes: encouraging business retention, recruiting new business, and the continual quest for new business growth ideas and opportunities. Projects: Seminars, producing business packages, monitoring and encouraging transportation issues in Pullman.
First Down Friday Night
Fourth of July
This newly formed committee works closely with WSU, ASWSU and chamber members to continue strong relations with students/businesses in Pullman. Where ‘there’s unity in the community’ in bridging the gap between campus and the city of Pullman. The committee works on creating events that bring the students into the community. The group worked with WSU Athletics to put up several hundred Cougar Flags around town and in shops. “30 Days of Pullman” in February 2012 will bring students into area businesses that will reward them with special incentives! Glenn Johnson This group plans, coordinates, and strategizes for this great celebration that is held each year in Sunnyside Park. Activities include: fireworks, live entertainment, BBQ, concessions, children’s games and more!
National Lentil Festival Amberly Boone This two-day community event is held in late August each year. Activities include: Live Entertainment, Grand Parade, 5k Fun Run, 100K Bike Ride, Lentil Lane Food Court, Lentil Gallery Arts & Crafts, Microbrew & Wine Tasting Tent, Lentil Land Children’s Area, Free Lentil Chili, Cook-Off Competition, Sports Tournaments and more. The “Lentil Lady” always likes to see new faces, hear fresh ideas, and welcomes a challenge.
Palouse Marketing Vicki Leeper In conjunction with the Moscow chamber, WSU and U of I representatives, this group works on increasing tourism to the Palouse
Charlene Jasper This group strategizes and coordinates a block party for First Down Friday each Friday before a home football game. Expanding this year to include each Friday before a home football game this group will be brainstorming the new “First Down Friday Presents!” for the rest of the season.

Holiday Fest Amberly Boone This committee gets the City of Pullman in the holiday spirit! Planning decorations and events to promote shopping in Pullman, it culminates in the Tree Lighting Ceremony on the first Saturday in December. Activities include Kid’s Jingle Bell Fun Run, free hot cocoa and cookies, holiday entertainment and a visit from Santa.

The Founding of Pullman And other historical selections from the community history of Pullman, Washington The Founding of Pullman In September of 1877, Daniel G. McKenzie of Kansas brought his family West and settled in the area of the Palouse known as Three Forks. The Bolin Farr family, and several others, came along a short time later, and set up their homesteads next to McKenzie. The early settlers desired a post office, so in June of 1881, Orville Stewart suggested the name of Pullman, after the great sleeping car magnate. The United States Postal Service was a trifle slow in granting the request, so Mr. Stewart ran the Post Office with $100 of his own money as a gift to the community. Six months later, the Postal Service established an official Post Office at the town of Pullman. With great ambition, the early settlers set out to build Pullman. As a result of their efforts, the town came out of public ownership in 1881. With title to the land secured, the town fathers platted the land, and proceeded to begin in earnest their efforts to develop the town of Pullman.

The Early Years Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) Pullman has a rich history going back to the 1870s when the area east of Colfax was first opened for settlement. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street. In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was
rejected by the Post Office Department. The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. When informed of the town’s action, railroad magnate George Pullman reportedly donated $50 to start a city library. Soon after this, Daniel McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow to the new town and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located initially on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew rapidly. It incorporated in 1888. After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College of Science and School of Agriculture was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

Looking For A Site “George A. Black, S.B. Conover, and A.H. Smith, the committee appointed by Acting Governor Laughton to locate the agricultural college and school of science, have made a tour of the counties that are in the race for that institution.” “At 4:20 o’clock in the afternoon they stepped off the regular freight on the platform of the Pullman depot. The kid band in uniform played soul-stirring selections and headed the throng of commissioners and citizens to Main Street.” “The commissioners had many compliments for Pullman, its natural resources, fine stores, and store buildings,
and it is believed that an impression for good was made upon their minds.” “Two sites, the Bedder and the Farr property, both adjoining the town, were shown to the commission, and no mistake will be made by them if they locate the college on either.”

The Four Hills of Pullman A distinct feature of Pullman is the four hills that surround it, playing a large part in the way the town has been developed. To the southwest is Sunnyside Hill. The first homes to receive the gentle warmth of the morning sun are those near Gladish School on Sunnyside Hill. To the southeast is Pioneer Hill, originally known as Methodist Hill. Actually, the Methodist Church building, Pullman’s first, was built on Sunnyside Hill in 1882. The Congregational church was built on Methodist Hill. But, the Methodist minister and many of the church members, such as the McKenzies and the Squires, made their homes on Methodist Hill. Old time “shouting” prayer meetings were held in these homes. The hill to the northeast, now College Hill, was known as Mechanics Hill before and after the new college, Washington Agriculture College and School of Science, opened the doors of its first building, Crib, in 1892. To the northwest lies Military Hill, given its name from the Military Academy, Pullman’s prep school of 1891. The school served the educational needs of Pullman’s young men for four years, after which it burned to the ground. Major Walker’s home, N.W. 325 True, is among the few remaining homes of the faculty.

Pullman Parks & Recreation Pullman Parks & Recreation…Your Recreation Connection, offers a variety of sport activities ranging from youth soccer leagues to adult golf lessons, and white water rafting trips to art lessons. Specific information on activities and classes are listed in a tri-annual brochure available at City Hall, Pioneer Center, Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Visit our website www. pullman-wa.gov/recreation or call 338-3227 for further information on Park & Recreation activities. Interwoven within Pullman are 13 parks with over 95 acres of land. Each has its own unique features and recreational opportunities.
City Playfield 820 South St (8.66 acres) This is the main facility for Pullman’s summer sports activities. It contains the city softball fields, a jogging track, volleyball standards, batting cage and picnic tables.
City of Pullman RV Park 770 SE South Street (Riverview Road and South St) (24 spaces) All 24 spaces have full water, electricity, sewer and cable hook-ups. It is open from April 1 to November 30. A few tent spaces are also available. Contact Parks & Recreation at 3383227 to make reservations.

325 NE Spring Sreet (2.75 Acres)
Donated by the Itanis in 1997, the park is now under development as a natural area. Nature plantings and paths are being planned and constructed. A connecting path to Sunnyside Park will eventually be developed.
Located near Reaney Park, this area includes a skateboard facility, public restrooms and trail link to the Bill Chipman Trail. Benches are located along the Palouse River.
Kruegel Park Dilke & South St (7.92 acres) This park was purchased from William Daw in 1903 and named after William C. Kruegel in 1958. It contains a spacious picnic area, BBQ area, full sized tennis courts, expansive playground, small football field, baseball diamond, and soccer field and volleyball standards.
Lawson Gardens 705 SE Derby Street (13 acres) The beautiful formal gardens include a reflecting pool, gazebo, seasonal flowers, rose and perennial gardens. This lovely park is popular for summer and fall weddings and may be rented by calling Parks and Recreation at 338-3227.
Sunnyside Park Cedar Street (25 acres) Home of Pullman’s annual 4th of July community celebration, this park contains a picnic and BBQ shelter that overlooks two ponds and a waterfall. The facilities include: tennis court, baseball diamond, volleyball standards, disc golf course, and walking trails. The city’s garden plots are also located here.
Terre View Park 335 NW Terre View Drive (3.25 acres) Gifted by the Schweitzer family. The park was completed and dedicated in 2002. Features include a picnic shelter, restrooms, playgrounds, walking/bike paths, natural landscaping pier and wetland.
Woodcraft Park 675 SE South Street (.84 acres)

This is a peaceful picnic area with beautiful shade trees in the southeast part of town.
There is a BBQ and picnic shelter located near children’s playground facility. There is also a baseball diamond and a fenced basketball court.
799 NW Darrow Street The City’s “old nursery” site having outgrown its initial purpose made its transformation into the Conservation Park as a result of WSU student Angie Kenney’s Master Thesis; Environmental and Societal Benefits of Conserving Open Space: An in Depth Analysis and formal Park Proposal for Pullman, Washington. The Boy Scouts have improved trails and made the initial improvements to the entrance site at the western terminus of Darrow Street, Park staff added a pergola and volunteers from Windermere Realty installed the landscape. Cub Scouts have added plantings and a bench site overlooking the Palouse River. The future vision includes pedestrian connections to Cooper Basin, Military Hill, and Grand Avenue Greenway.
Harrison Tot Lot 337 NW Harrison Street (.233 acres) This playground is designed for very young children and includes a shaded family picnic area.
Military Hill Park 500 NW Larry Street (25 acres) Adjoining Pullman High School, there are 6 tennis courts, 2 baseball diamonds, playfields, playgrounds, a picnic shelter and BBQ area. Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center is adjacent to the park.
Petry Natural Area A natural area off the city pathway located between Whitman Street and Stadium Way. Benches and picnic tables are available for a relaxing brown bag lunch.
Reaney Park 690 Reaney Way (1.64 acres) Home of the National Lentil Festival and the Reaney Park summer concert series. This park contains outdoor swimming pools, a gazebo, playground area, picnic tables, a BBQ area and a horseshoe pit.

The more than 21,000 students enrolled at the scenic 620-acre Pullman campus can choose from approximately 200 academic fields of study. A Variety Of Entertainment Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum, located on Stadium Way and Orchard Street, offers cultural, athletic and community events including basketball, concerts, plays, dance performances and more. The Regional Theatre of the Palouse building sits unassumingly in the middle of Pull-

The Senior Center is located in City Hall, and offers hot meals on Mondays and Fridays each week at 11:45am. The facility offers a variety of activities for seniors, such as day trips, overnight excursions, card games, walking and other exercise classes, and special events. The National Lentil Festival The 24th Annual National Lentil Festival will be held August 17 & 18, 2012.
