A predecessor of fruitcake called stollen is popular in Germany during the holidays and sometimes is given as a gift. The bread is folded in on itself and is meant to represent the baby Jesus being swaddled, said Tassie Pippert, certified chef and lecturer for hospitality management in the James Madison University School of Hospitality. The bread is baked, dusted with sugar and wrapped up and set aside for two weeks before it is cut.
