Time flies. A cliché the size of Florida but nevertheless it’s very true indeed. Ask Margriet, Margo and Fulvia, the three musketeers behind Ventura Lambrate. They themselves are still surprised they are on the brink of the fifth edition of celebrating design on the same location they started out in 2010. But before getting all sentimental on us, we asked them what today should be the must-sees. They came up with:

Things we’d love to forget After five years there are plenty of stories to tell. Sad stories, epic fails, tales of wonder, funny little accidents and our favourites: all the events they’d rather forget. Today we bring you a few of these unforgettable stories.

2013. Rob Vollenberg, father of Magriet, snogs his first man (it is whispered it was in fact one of the editors of your tabloid). The cocktail all the girls of Organisation in Design like most during their night on the town turned out to have an ominous name: Deep Throat. And, oddly enough, they love it. Every year Margriet and Margo spend one evening at their apartment taking a footbath. Would we like to forget this frightful image. Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano on Iceland. It erupted in 2010. And not only in Iceland. European air traffic came to a standstill. Margriet and Margo had to go home by touring bus. As it goes, touring busses are driven by touring bus drivers and they love loud and simple music. Leading to a 15 hour sing-a-long trip back home. They will never forget.

Design, sweat ‘n tears part 1
Not meant to be worn Working on the intersection between fashion design and visual art, Danish fashion designer Nikoline Liv Andersen creates elaborate garments that are not meant to be worn. Instead, they are almost a stage for experimentation and for telling stories about human nature and our way of life. The interplay between what is natural and what is artificial is a big part of her work, since she loves experimenting with materials and fabrics, always searching for new ways to transform artificial materials such as straws and nails into something that looks organic. A characteristic example of her work is her collection of Rococo-inspired wigs decorated with monkeys, ‘The Dance of the Deaf and Dumb Eye’ (2011), which are on show during Ventura Lambrate as part of the MINDCRAFT exhibition of Danish design in Milan. ‘Through my work I’m always questioning the meaning of life and trying to understand why we are placed on earth when we are going to die anyway. At the same time though I’m always in my own craft, my clothes-making, searching for a magical moment. The way I see the world is always a huge inspiration for me, but whether other people understand my point of view is less important. I want people to reflect on their own.’

These men made the Mosa bar! And she designed it.
By the time you read this, the bar Mosa designed and placed at Amaro’s place is finished and more important: open. So whilst drinking a beer or a soda and wondering about the miracles you can do with tiles from Royal Mosa, remember these Fabulous Five. Salute!

Perky eyecatchers and some of the coolest roadburners – as we cruise the streets of Lambrate, we meet and greet design aficionados from all over the world. Fortune favors the bold, so we added just a little denim flavor to it. Thanks to Spectre Collective, The Cuckoos Nest, Goldie, Nana Judy and Rack and Ruïn, Flattery doesn’t get us anywhere – but y’all look great in Ventura Lambrate. We shot more people today. TU/e: WHERE DESIGN MEETS TECHNOLOGY
Sander Lucas, graduated at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002, runs his own design company Lucas & Lucas, and once a week he is coach at the department Industrial Design at TU/e to advice students about design. ‘It is really interesting to see how students always integrate innovative technology to create an intelligent product. On Fridays, when I am at TU/e, students actively approach me about ways to implicate form in their work. It is great to see how design and technology get more and more interwoven.’ This week Sander Lucas is in Milan to present his new work ‘Reflection Light’.
Start your morning in Milan with the espresso and croissants, while catching up on insights on design education, design research and the positioning dilemmas of the designer. BREAKFAST TALK #1 Wednesday April 9, 10:00 am: Educating the Self With: Tonny Holtrust (managing director education & research Design Academy Eindhoven), Jurgen Bey (managing director Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and design studio Makkink & Bey), Jan Pieter Kaptein and Eugenie de Lariviere (both graduates Design Academy Eindhoven). ‘boom’ (Dutch) means ‘tree’ Eindhoven is a buzzing center of design, technology and exciting crossovers. With its rich industrial history, two prominent institutes focusing on design and technology (Design Academy and TU/e) and lots of creative incubators, it’s truly a home base for both young talents and renowned designers. This city future proof. 365/24/7 and especially once a year during the annual Dutch Design Week.

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) introduces a brand new master: Design Curating and Writing. Louise Schouwenberg, Co-Head of this new Master program, explains how it distinguishes itself from similar programs: ‘Unlike other courses that are limited to one expertise, design history or design criticism, this program deals with both curating practices as well as reflective and writing practices.’
