Ventura Lambrate April 11 Friday YOU Of course it’s all about design and the designers. If they weren’t here, we wouldn’t be here and you would probably be doing something else; somewhere else. Now picture all the shows, presentations, designers, all the activity and publications without YOU. … Exactly, without an audience this whole week of organized chaos wouldn’t exist. So today we say thank YOU! This tabloid is freely available on every official location and online: www.dailiesontour.com and www.facebook/dailiesontour. If, for any reason, you’d like to meet us in person and you have the balls; we’re located at the Press Desk at Via Ventura 5 MAP F 13. You never know. PS Take real good notice of our back cover.

Berlin Calling! Wir lieben Berlin. And you most probably do as well. But why? We don’t know really. And neither do you, we suppose. What’s up with all that? Let’s take a closer look at the City of Contrasts and ask the Ventura Lambrate Berliners (nope, not the pastry) why its creative soil is this fertile.

‘Diversity. Cultures are clashing! Architectural styles are mixed up. It has no centre, but loads of different areas. There’s no leading way of living you’re urged to follow. So, space for everyone to evolve and renew. This creates strong, open-minded characters.’

For years we’ve been visiting Milan Design Fair. Blisters, soar feet and stress about what-not-to-miss included. ‘That’s nice’, ‘Sure that’s a winner’, and ‘Hurry up, if we want to see this and that, we have to leave now…’ Never mind, going for a drink, we’re too tired to meet up with anyone.
GUNNAR SØREN PE TERSEN:
‘Diversity for sure! There’s a certain freedom in Berlin. There are no restrictions in time and space to interfere with my personal ambitions.’
Not this year. Have a seat if you bump into that great piece of design you really like. Look and relax. Talk to the designer. Tell him or her what you like and what could be done better. Have a conversation.

No fear of missing out on things. Design will still be around tomorrow. At least, it certainly should be. That’s one thing we’ve learned during these last years in full crisis: design doesn’t just run away, it’s here to stay. Look at Aalto’s stool 60, Wegner’s Wishbone Chair or Eames’ Lounge. Pretty sure you would still have a seat if you would see them right now.

Okaydokay, that’s quite clear, we’d say. The rough German Hauptstadt undoubtedly has this certain energy many cities simply only dream of. Berlin is hot ’n boiling and houses piles of creatives making ditto amounts of great work, because they get space to do so. We rest our case.
Every crisis is an opportunity. Perhaps the baseline from a couple of years back ‘C’e il crisi? No, c’e il salone!’ wasn’t that bad. But think of it from this perspective: a great piece of design should stop time. So if you meet one of these, once again: take your time. It will sooth your soar feet, make you forget about your blisters and experience a great moment in time. A great moment in Milan! www.dift.be, www.deinvasie.be / Via dei Canzi 14 MAP A 1
Process as a keyword at Archello by Archello
The past decades have been a glorification of the designer. Architects and designers have been launched into stardom by the media to become celebrity starchitects and star designers. At Archello, we want to shift the focus from the designer to the process. Instead of concentrating on the designer as the main author, we want to show all the actors involved in the design or building process. Designers form part of a bigger team in the making of a building or product. In a recent series on Archello called The Full Story, we emphasize the importance of every actor within the building process. With our latest edition about the mixed-use complex Emporia in Malmö (Sweden), the glass manufacturer, landscape designer, architect and biophilic expert explain their part in the making of this award-winning building. The engineers from Folcra reveal how they solved the extreme challenges to create the spectacular curves in the façade. On top of the busy complex, the landscape designers explain, the aim was to design an urban oasis above as a refuge from the busyness below. The architects from Wingårdhs highlight how they viewed Emporia more as an urban planning project rather than just a building. And the experts from Green Fortune show how they transformed the stairs into a lush biophilic jungle.

Perky eyecatchers and some of the coolest roadburners – as we cruise the streets of Lambrate, we meet and greet design aficionados from all over the world. Fortune favors the bold, so we added just a little denim flavor to it. Thanks to Spectre Collective, The Cuckoos Nest, Goldie, Nana Judy and Rack and Ruïn, Flattery doesn’t get us anywhere – but y’all look great in Ventura Lambrate. We shot more people today. Tactility and layering play a key role in the textile and clothing design of Borre Akkersdijk. This offers good opportunities for the introduction of technology. Hence, Martijn ten Bhömer (TU/e) approached the designer for a study on special doilies for Alzheimer patients. These first steps in the use of ‘wearable technology’ brought Akkersdijk to an excellent new idea he launched at festival South by Southwest (SXSW).
We meet Lex Pott, DDA nominee in 2013 and currently present in Milan on different locations in the company of Woes van Haaften, founder of New Window (which is an interesting story, by the way). ‘A nomination for DDA is an honour to start with. An independent jury selects your work out of many. What follows is publicity, meeting new people. It’s a kick-start I wouldn’t have had without the nomination, I think. In the end it’s not just any nomination. DDA is more or less the Rolls Royce amongst the design awards. Perhaps I would have gotten where I am now without it, but it surely would have been along another trail.’ Which is, at least in a philosophical way, very true.
Start your morning in Milan with coffee and croissants, while catching up on insights on design education, design research and the positioning dilemmas of the designer.

WALKING HOTSPOT: BORRE AKKERSDIJK
His BB.Suit – in close cooperation with TU/e, CRISP (Creative Industry Scientific Programme), gadget website WANT and 22tracks – is a garment that intertwines design, technology and music. The ‘onesie’ provides WiFi connectivity and features integrated GPS, Bluetooth and NFC. If you’re wearing one, you literally become a walking hotspot. So at SXSW, Akkersdijk was traceable for artists who subsequently were allowed to upload their latest tunes at www.22tracks.com/byborresxsw.

Eindhoven is Future Proof. The validation for this is the fDi award that Brainport Eindhoven received on March 12, 2014. The city received this award for their high ranking (Europe’s #3) in the Financial Times survey of ‘fDi European Cities and Regions of the Future’. It’s a city of thinking and creating. Representing and making. This mentality, innovative history and belief in the future provided Eindhoven a worldwide top position in technology, design and knowledge. Eindhoven is bursting with energy!
