Single Camera and Multi Camera Productions COMPARISONS: Single:     

Visually more interesting – Freedom of camera movement (POV, dolly shots, hand held) Total Control over every shot More mobile (less equipment) Excellent for location shooting Must be re-set before each new angle – time consuming.

Multi:     

Cameras locked off Not as many shot options Good for studio situations Not good for location shooting Relatively little resetting required - quick

I have been asked to take my three favourite television programmes and analyse them using my knowledge I have gained to determine if they are single or multi camera productions.

1) STRANGER THINGS: Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Thriller, Sci-Fi, Horror Storyline: In a small town, where everyone knows one another, a peculiar incident starts a chain of events that lead to the disappearance of a child – which begins to tear at the fabric of an otherwise peaceful community. Dark government agencies and seemingly malevolent supernatural forces converge on the town while a few locals begin to understand that there is more going on than meets the eye.

Stranger things is shot using a single camera production. We can see this in the first episode of the first season as the boys are playing Dungeons and Dragons, it would have been far too complicated to shoot this scene using Multi cam.

2) AMERICAN HORROR STORY – FREAK SHOW Genres: Horror, Drama, Thriller Storyline: The season is mainly set in 1952 Jupiter, Florida, telling the story of one of the last remaining freak shows in the United States and their struggle for survival.

American Horror Story, Freak Show is mainly shot using a single camera production. Since this season is set mainly at the freak show, which is a field with a camp set up, a single camera production would have been much easier and have a better creative effect when it came to editing the clips together.

3) SKINS Genre: Drama Storyline: Series One and Two focuses on a group of British teens trying to grow up and learn about love and life with little adult supervision (and lots of PARTYING). Sid tries to be everyone's friend and usually ends up on the short end of the stick. He is mostly manipulated by best friend Tony, whose girlfriend Michelle he is in love with. Tony is one to try anything once, including every girl he meets. He manipulates not only Sid and Michelle but anyone else who will let him. Anwar is just looking to lose his virginity, and though he is

Muslim, it rarely stops him from partying excessively. Gay and popular friend Maxxie is along for the ride, while trying to pursue his dream of being a dancer and actor in London. Cassie, an anorexic basket-case, is in love with Sid, who overlooks her time and time again. Straight-laced Jal wants to focus on her musical ambitions.
