Dear Parents and Patrons,
Thank you for your support of the Jordan High School orchestra! On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administrative team, I would like to welcome you to this year’s concert season. The orchestra has prepared an exceptional concert, and you are sure to be pleased.
The fine arts department is a source of artistic pride for Jordan High School and our community. The performance opportunities our students are given are incredible. It is with great anticipation and excitement that we congratulate the Jordan High School Symphony on their invitation to the National Orchestra Cup this spring in New York City. We have no doubt that they will represent Jordan High School well on a national stage. We are particularly proud of those students who have represented our school beyond our performing arts center, whether it be a TMEA All-State ensembles or the Houston Youth Symphony. From earning placements in the TMEA Region and All-State Orchestras to Sweepstakes Awards at UIL Concert & Sightreading Evaluation to 1st division performances at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble contest, these students truly are remarkable.
I am extremely proud of the student musicians who work so hard to practice and prepare for every rehearsal, audition, and performance. Special thanks go to Mr. Davis and Mr. Yam for their dedication to the students at Jordan High School.
Enjoy the performance!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ethan Crowell Head Principal
Since opening in the Fall of 2020, the orchestra program has grown to approximately 200 students in six orchestras.
In its short existence, the orchestra has set a high standard of artistic achievement. It is worth noting that the orchestra earned Sweepstakes at the UIL Concert & Sightreading evaluation in its first year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
As individual performers, students in the orchestra have reached great heights. Members of the orchestra have performed with the TMEA All-State Sinfonietta, Philharmonic, and Symphony Orchestras at the annual Clinic and Convention in San Antonio, TX, TMEA All-Region Orchestras and the Houston Youth Symphony! The Symphony Orchestra has placed 1st in the Full Orchestra division of the National Orchestra Festival held in conjunction with the American String Teacher’s Association National Conference in Orlando, FL. This past March, the orchestra competed for the National Orchestra Cup held in Alice Tully Hall at New York City’s Lincoln Center. In December 2024, the Symphony Orchestra will perform at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra clinic in Chicago, Illinois.
Thank you for joining us this evening! As the audience, you are an important part of tonight’s concert. The students of the Jordan High School Orchestra have worked hard to prepare for tonight’s performance. The audience’s responsibility at formal concerts is to honor the efforts of the performers by providing a listening atmosphere in which all can appreciate their performance.
To that end, we ask your cooperation:
• Please make sure all cell phones and electronic devices are turned off. Cell phones can interfere with wireless microphones and recording equipment, as well as creating unwanted noise.
• Please refrain from flash photography. This is very distracting to the performers and other audience members.
• While the performance is in progress, please remain seated and quiet. (If it becomes necessary to leave the auditorium, please do so between musical selections.)
• If very young children become restless and disrupt others' ability to listen, please take them from the auditorium until they are quiet.
• Please do not hum or clap along with the performers, unless specifically invited to do so.
• Show your appreciation for the performance by clapping after each selection. Excessive whistling and cheering are not appropriate at a formal concert.
We have all worked very hard to prepare an exceptional evening of music for everyone to enjoy. Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping this to be a wonderful experience for all of us!
WHAT A YEAR!! Proud only just begins to describe how we feel about this year. The list of achievements is numerous and we undoubtedly left something off. But, the accomplishments are not what makes our chests swell with pride. It is the students and their remarkable show of character. Time and again our students faced challenges to their character. Yet through it all our students rose to face the challenge and have shown once again why they are simply the best.
Thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate our graduating seniors! In addition to celebration, tonight is about reflection and appreciation. In so doing, we would be remiss not to acknowledge all those who have worked so hard and contributed to the success of this program. These acknowledgements are in no way exhaustive or comprehensive as there are incalculable tiny contributions that go unseen. Our special thanks goes to:
Dr. Anna Chen, Mrs. Daisy Fujiwara, and Mrs. Amisha Chudasama for your tireless work on the Executive Board;
All of our Friends of Jordan HS Orchestra Donor Circle
Karen Steph and Sharlene Matheson for all of your help with the uniforms (Hopefully it was better this year...);
Sharlene and Andres Matheson, Dr. Anna Chen and Dr. John Chung, for chaperoning (and surviving) the Spring Trip;
Dr. Chen and all of the parent volunteers for making the Winter Concert look so beautiful;
Andres Matheson for making us look so good in pictures and videos;
Mrs. McNeal, Mr. Koter, Mrs. Gingell and Miss Hagin for your dedication to our students;
Dr. Crowell for your constant support;
All those who bought items on our Amazon Wishlist;
All of the parents who helped chaperone the Houston Symphony trip;
All of the parents who attended booster club meetings and provided valuable input;
Parents for the unwavering support of your student’s music education;
Our wonderful band staff for allowing us to collaborate with your students;
Students for your dedication to learning and improving;
BEETS, Officers and Crew for answering the call of duty;
The graduating senior class of 2024 for carrying the legacy of excellence forward in the Jordan High School Orchestra.
We know that we are somehow and in some way forgetting someone. Please know it is not for lack of appreciation. Thank you for your attendance at tonight’s concert and please enjoy the show!

Jeweet Fang is a Junior cellist for Jordan High School’s Varsity Sinfonia Orchestra. He has been a member of the TMEA All-State Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra. He has also been named an Outstanding Performer at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest for his piano performance of Pour le Piano by Claude Debussy, and the Outstanding Performer Award at The Katy Young Artist Competition for his performances of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1, Bela Bartók’s Allegro Barbaro, and ensemble performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op.80 No.6. He is currently working on his Performer Certificate in piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Sophie Zeng has always loved music and has been studying violin with her mother and teacher, Ling Hu since the 4th grade. She is a three-year All-State musician and led a string quartet to 2nd Place in the UIL State Chamber Music Contest. She has served as Concertmaster of the Varsity Orchestra since freshman year and Co-President since sophomore year, implementing new socials and establishing traditions. Outside of orchestra, Sophie is involved as the President of Mu Alpha Theta, Vice President of Future Business Leaders of America, and Vice President of National Honor Society.
In the Fall, Sophie will attend Harvard University, to study computer science and economics. She also hopes to join the university orchestra or a chamber music group and continue her music passion. Sophie could not have achieved her goals without the guidance of Mr. Davis, who has been an inspirational teacher, mentor, and musician. She would also like to thank Mr. Yam for being a supportive, dedicated, and passionate teacher and for his funny jokes. Lastly, she is grateful for her family and friends who have always motivated her to reach for her dreams, and especially her mother who has been her role model throughout her music journey.
Diane Shim, a senior at Jordan High School, is a dedicated member of the Warrior Choir Department, serving as vice president and soprano 1 section leader. Throughout her four years of high school, she earned gold medals at the regional and state levels in competitions such as the Texas UIL Solo and Ensemble. Diane's exceptional performances led to her winning Outstanding Performer at the Katy Young Artist Competition and the Texas Solo and Ensemble competition. Diane was a member of the Texas Music Educator Association Region 23 Mixed Choir throughout her years in High School and a member of the Texas Music Educator Association All-State Choir in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Her recent solo performance includes the performance of Only in Sleep with the TMEA 2024 All-State Mixed choir. Diane will be attending the University of Texas at Austin to study vocal performance in hopes of mastering the voice and expanding into ethnomusicology and global music.
