Spartan 2012 Year-in Review

Message from Athletic Director: To the entire Spartan Nation I thank all of you for believing in D1 Sports & Athletics and making it the organization it has become in Loudoun County. In the forthcoming months, I will continue to unfold our plans and vision for the future. But at this time, I am proud to share with you some of the accomplishments of D1SA from 2012. D1SA is a competitive and developmental basketball organization founded in 2011 to bring the sport of basketball to life in Loudoun County, Virginia. As many of you may not know, D1SA began with one team and has continued to expand ever since. Currently over 200 young men and women, from throughout the Northern Virginia area are part of the D1SA community. With programs ranging from individual training to competitive open gym, to local and national team play and exciting regional special events and showcases. I have to say that I am extremely proud of what this organization has gone through and has accomplished. The spirit of the D1SA family has been exemplified by work of our Advisory Board, by our coaches coming together to help each other out; by the team managers organizing the parents to ensure that information is presented to each and every Spartan; by the parents to cheer loud and to support not only their respective teams but also the other Spartan teams has been great to see, and most importantly by the growth and development of our student athletes. Thanks to all of you!

Spartan Spring 2012

2012 Year-in Review

Loudoun County is a better place because of our collective efforts to organize and compete. The competition is tough sometimes and normally in tournaments the Director places teams according to skill levels but in some of the tournaments we participated in that philosophy was not taken into consideration. That is an unfortunate reality when the teams are in the developmental stage playing against stronger competition, but from what I saw the Spartans stood tall and competed despite the odds. The entire Spartan philosophy borders on the principle to keep competing even when the odds are stacked up against us. Preparation now becomes paramount because we all now know what to expect in tournaments as a unit. Coaches can push harder and parents can understand why we work so hard at teaching the details of the game. Commitment to preparation so that team chemistry can be formed is also a key component. We will continue to train with the expertise of recruited trainers for individual and team development for aspiring basketball players. Thanks to everyone for continuing to believe in our mission! In 2013, I am committed to our programs to promote the student athlete in the game of basketball and in the game of life by developing a brotherhood/sisterhood of committed youth using their athletic abilities while striving to be good students, role models and community leaders. With the D1SA Family of support, I am confident that we will accomplish our goals.

Spring 2012

For 7th grade, tryouts were held in February/March 2012 to select members for three competitive teams, Elite, Premier, and Select. With so many talented and interested participants in the program, D1SA decided to establish developmental teams as well, Fury, Fire and Cagers. The season ran from March 15th to June 2nd with teams meeting twice weekly for team practice and D1SA training sessions. All teams were formed to best serve and develop the skill-set of the player. D1SA coaching staff accessed all players and designed teams accordingly so that each player could develop, train, and advance their game. Spartan teams competed in the Loudoun Triple Threat Spring League. Elite and Premier played up a grade and competed in the 7th Grade division, with Elite taking home the Runner-Up trophy. Select, Fury, Fire and Cagers, played in the 6th Grade Division, with the Select team taking home the Runners-Up trophy. During the Spring season, Select, Fury, Fire and Cagers were introduced to competitive basketball at the Freedom Challenge Basketball tournament hosted by Loudoun Freedom on April 28th, Battle of Balls Bluff tournament hosted by Loudoun Triple Threat on May 4th through 7th and the Route 1 Classic on May 26th and 27th in Alexandria.

Summer 2012

D1SA Summer Agenda: Spartan Athletes Mentoring Spartan Athletes As part of Spartan Elite’s summer curriculum, team players were spread-out throughout the developmental teams to mentor the players. Each week, Elite members were added to the roster of Spartan Select, Fire, Fury, and Cagers teams to fill-in gaps because of lack of players due to family vacations. This leadership role enhanced the confidence of Elite players and challenged the developmental team players to sharpen their ball-handling and teamwork skills. These teams, as well as Spartan Premier and Spartan Bolts played in the Fairfax Star League from June 10th through July 26th at various schools in Fairfax County.

Spartan Elite 2012 AAU Nationals Spartan Elite National Team: Evan Buckley, Drew Bulawa, Kalvin Bustamante, Cameron Corbett, Nate Martin, Jordan Miller, Jayde Pierre, George Richardson, Aaron Maisus, Matthew Traub, Harry Whittleton, Jalen Williams; Coached by Eric Williams & Francis Bustamante With determination and anticipation leading their spirits, twelve united Spartan Elite players traveled with their families to Hampton, Virginia on July 19th for the first time to compete with the nation’s top Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Division II teams. Not knowing what to expect, however the boys knew that the competition would be fierce with 6th grade teams from all over the nation competing for the title of AAU Division II National Champs. Anticipation filled the arena when team Spartan Elite went to work facing teams from across the nation including Georgia’s Rome Elite; Indiana Blizzard; New York Eastside Hoops and On Point; and Jacksonville Magic. Spartans standing strong defeated On Point in the opening day game 39 to 37. Facing Jacksonville Magic the next afternoon, Spartan’s defense broke down and Spartans suffered a heart-breaking defeat 27 to 31. Hopeful the next morning facing the toughest competition in the pool, and unfortunately loosing Point Guard Jalen Williams to a dislocated finger early in the first half, Spartans lost 34 to 50 to Eastside Hoops. Rallying without their starting captain Williams, in the afternoon, Spartans defeated Indiana Blizzard 42 to 30. Advancing in their pool to the consolation playoff, the Spartans faced Rome Elite and lost 55 to 60. Forward Jordan Miller put up an amazing 21 points, dazzling the crowd on the court with his hops and amazing wingspan. With only two victorious games, the Spartans left the arena of their peers with an understanding of the journey that lies ahead in 2013. Forward Drew Bulawa’s mother, Dustine said, the boys didn’t shoot real well, but now they have the experience at the National level, so watch out for next year!” They now can compare and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and understand the work ahead of them. They can be ranked amongst the best, said their Head Coach Eric Williams. The experience gained was insightful he said. Spartan’s forward Miller said, “I am disappointed with the outcome, but next year, we can take it all!” Family members and team Spartan stayed at the Hampton Inn nearby the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. A special thank you went to Team Manager Rebecca Williams for orchestrating the daily social and practice schedule and to Sheila Bustamante for arranging the excellent hotel accommodations. Departing on Saturday morning, Nate Martin said, “We’ll be back, watch for us!”

Spartan Premier 2012 AAU Nationals Spartan Premier National Team: Zachary Anderson, Christian Caraballo, Scott Collins, Jalen Frueh, Renzo Guevarro, Wyatt Krueger, Tyrique Moss, Dominic Peterson, Matthew Rubloff, Will Urban; Coached by Dave Peterson and Tom Moss In July the Spartan Premier boys 6th grade team traveled down to Hampton, VA to play in the DIII AAU Nationals at “The House that Boo Built. They faced teams from as far North as Maine and as far South as Georgia. Their first opponent, Nor East Lighting, was very tough and scrappy and it was a game of runs with three lead changes. Ultimately, Nor East Lightning won out by 6 points after a hard fought battle. The boys did not let this get them down and they looked forward to their next game. The following day they faced a large and physical team from Maine, our starting point guard, took an elbow to the mouth and split his chin open and was out for the remainder of the game. The other guards stepped up to the challenge and did a great job controlling the game and handling the pressure. Ultimately, the Spartans were too much for the Lightning and we won out by 5 points. Once in bracket play we faced a very athletic team from Georgia. This was one of those grind it out 2 possession games for all 4 quarters. We came up short in this game and lost by 3 points in the final seconds of the the gam, it was a heartbreaker. The Spartans showed a lot of heart and desire to win, unfortunately it was not our time. This experience has made the Spartan Premier team tougher and battle tested and looking forward to advancing even further into bracket play this year at Nationals. No Fear, No Retreat!! The Spartan Premier players and families stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel right on the Marina in Hampton, VA. A special thank you to Team Manager Krista Peterson for orchestrating the daily social schedule, the movies, bowling outing, dinners and for arranging the excellent hotel accommodations. The Spartans know that they will be coming back next year and look forward to another exciting experience!

D1SA 2012 Open Gym In the early Spring D1SA held two

open gyms at Douglass Community Center in Leesburg thereby generating overwhelming success and interest in this format of play that led to our current open gym programming. This past year summer and fall open gym provided over 90 athletes an outlet to apply training in a workable, competitive environment. Open gym became the highlight of the week for the D1SA network of athletes. On Sunday’s during the late summer at River Bend Middle School and from September 9th through November 4th in the fall at Harper Park Middle School, boys and girls put their skills to test in a fun competitive environment. Baller’s country-wide met weekly in an un-coached format. Individuals emerged as leaders, as players coached and rallied their teammates in hardfought games. These sessions help create love of the game while encouraging camaraderie, teamwork, and street-ball skills. Athletic Director Coach Williams said, “Open gym is an excellent vehicle to join players from other teams and allows the athlete to apply all their skills and basketball training in a fun, self-motivating environment. Athletes are mentoring other athletes, it’s with great pride for a coach to watch.”

D1SA Training D1SA is committed to teaching the fundamental skills of the game while

making every training session both informative and enjoyable for all athletes to achieve his/her level of personal success. D1SA has ongoing team, small group and individual trainings year-round. This past spring developmental teams participated in weekly D1SA trainings as part of their curriculum. In the fall D1SA held two eight-week, small group training sessions for players who wanted to step-up their game and develop their stationary ball handling, first step development, efficiency of movement, moves on the run, finishes at the basket, game shooting workouts, strength training and much more! In order to devote individual attention to the athlete, enrollment was limited to a maximum of 15 persons per session. In the twice-weekly, one-hour training sessions, athletes received specialized instruction in order to achieve personal success.

Quote by Muhammed Ali: “I hated every minute of training, but I said don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” D1SA Athletes Benefit from Phenom Strength & Conditioning In an effort to diversify training for all our athletes, and as part of the competitive teams’ curriculum this fall, D1SA partnered with Phenom Strength & Conditioning in Ashburn, Virginia. Meeting twice weekly for a five-week period, Spartans were put to the test with programs designed to improve the strength, speed, explosiveness, balance, agility and mobility of the athlete. “If you want to be the best and achieve great things, you

have to train right,” says Lemar Marshall, former Washington Redskin & co-founder of Phenom. Working hard to improve their game over 25 Spartans completed the

training coarse. Spartan Elite team member Jayde Pierre said, “I knew I had muscles under there, but since Phenom, I actually have muscles in my arms and legs that I can see! Coach, when can we do Phenom again?”

Check out Phenom at: www.Phenomathlete.com

D1SA Training Clinics TEACHING THE SPARTAN WAY D1SA’s overall developmental program is to promote more personal attention to the development of its players and those interested in the game. In an effort to instill the Spartan Way and to address the skill-set of athletes that want to elevate their game, D1SA hosted an All Guard and All Big Man training session on May 10th at Douglass Community Center. D1SA training coaches designed the program to assess the players overall ability to become an impact player when competing and encouraged the development of tragedies to succeed.

D1SA will continue to provide clinics throughout 2013. Check our website for Details!

Spartan Way of Life D1SA seeks to highlight Spartan athletes that exemplify the Spartan Way of Life. The Spartan perspective highlights the strength, will, and courage of a Spartan. The entire philosophy is based on the motto of no retreat, no surrender, no fear! In the physical world our greatest competition is found within ourselves and never against our opponents. Toeing the line, pushing us beyond the threshold of comfort ability to produce excellence. Preparation is a key component to all of what a Spartan does, so in the face of adversity, we are all craftsman at finding solutions to any given conflict that arises. No excuses for a Spartan before, during, or after battle. Being courageous for us is not only a characteristic, but it is instilled in the framework of our teams and individual players. We are linked in battle and life step by step with discipline and an unquenchable thirst to execute as one impenetrable force through teamwork. Together we stand as Spartans. Spartans, “Prepare for glory!

2012 Spartan Year-in Review Exemplifying the Spartan Way of Life, D1SA is Proud to Highlight the Following Athletes

Spartan For Life: Drew Bulawa

The Spartan Family said a bittersweet farewell to their beloved Spartan brother, Drew Bulawa in October when he moved back to Texas with his family. Drew was drafted in November 2010 as a member of the Loudoun Triple Threat Spartan Elite. Coach Eric Williams says, “Drew exemplifies the ‘Spartan Way’ in all his endeavors and will be a Spartan For Life.”

Having moved to Northern Virginia from Katy, Texas in the summer of 2010, Drew loves playing basketball, but he also has a passion for baseball and football. In Sixth grade, playing quarterback and linebacker for Ashburn Youth football, his team the Seminoles went undefeated, but lost in the Championship game. He played travel baseball for the Loudoun South Eagles and for the newly formed team, Diamond Elite. Drew playing shortstop was also the leadoff batter and led the team in on-base percentage, steals and runs scored. The baseball team won three of their four fall tournaments. Last winter competing at the Loudoun County Elks Hoop Shoot competition, Drew dropped 23 out of 25 free throws to win the competition in the male 12-14 year-old categories.

Off the court, Drew attended Creighton’s Corner Elementary and was awarded the Ruritan “Outstanding Student Citizen” award. Taking all honor courses at Eagle Ridge Middle School, Drew maintained straight A’s, so when he is not on the basketball court, baseball field or football field, he is studying; however, you can also find him parked in front of the television watching sports or ESPN highlights! He was awarded the Sixth Grade Male Student of the Month in February. He won the work Ethic Award both for the first quarter and the end of the year for the Flight team. His teacher said, “Drew is dependable, humble, reliable, focused and respectful.” In Seventh grade, Drew was named September Male Student of the Month. The Eagle Ridge Newspaper said, “Although the new school year has just begun, Drew Bulawa has already shown qualities of a good leader. In class, Drew leads by example. He participates in class discussions and takes initiative when working independently or in small groups. Drew demonstrates compassion towards his classmates, always willing to help his peers.

Drew sets high expectations for himself and we know that he will continue to be a leader throughout the school year.” Both years at Eagle Ridge, Drew qualified to compete in the “Eagle Mile,” placing second both years and finishing with a time of 5:51 this year.

This fall, Drew’s Dad’s employer moved them back to Texas where Drew now attends Seven Lakes Junior High. Both Seven Lakes High School and Middle School, with their mascot named Spartans, have strong academic and basketball programs. Dustine, Drew’s mother says, “Drew was excited to know that he will not only be a “Spartan for Life” in his heart, but he will “truly” continue be a “Spartan” at Seven Lakes.” Drew is currently playing point guard for the Seventh grade Varsity team. They have 5:30 am practices five days a week, so Drew is learning a few more lessons on work ethic and discipline. The Seven Lakes won their first scrimmage 56-52 with Drew dropping 18 points. Drew will continue to strive to live like a Spartan. “No Retreat, No Fear, No Surrender.” Drew misses all of his oudoun Spartan teammates, but hopes to meet up with many of them again, on and off the court! A very special Spartan thanks to Brett for doing our scorebook and running the time clock; and to Dustine for her contributions as statistician; and Bayli for her keen eye in the games that kept the stats correct and her support as the “Best Little Sister Spartan Ever.” You are all missed.

2012 Spartan Year-in Review Spirit of a Spartan: Ryan Alexander Ryan Alexander exemplifies the strength, will and determination of a Spartan. Since joining the D1SA organization, Ryan has been a part of every training and team opportunity available. His greatest accomplishment this year was being drafted to play on the Seventh Grade Blue Ridge Travel team after having tried out last year and not making the team. Ryan deems his success to the hard work he has put in as a Spartan especially this year. Coach Williams says, “Ryan has heart and he pushes himself hard and works through everything you throw at him. He is a young man who never misses an opportunity to thank me for working with him.” As a young child, Ryan played soccer and baseball, but these sports did not capture his passion. It wasn't until Ryan was in the fifth grade playing for the Western Loudoun Basketball League that he developed an interest in basketball. Once the season was over he asked his parents how he could continue to play basketball year round. That prompted a Google search and an email from Coach Williams inviting him out to a practice, and thus the world of competitive basketball was introduced. After working through the summer and fall training in 2011, Ryan was placed on Spartan Select to gain an understanding of the level of play of travel basketball. He then went on to play with a passion on Spartan Fire in the spring and Spartan Fury in the summer. Throughout each season, Ryan has never missed any opportunity given to him to improve through training and coaching. Coach Eddie Bridge said, “Ryan is easy to coach. His strong desire and dedication have been a tremendous force in his remarked growth throughout the last year and a half.” At the D1SA All-Star game this past fall, Ryan was named MVP for his team. “Focusing on Basketball has helped developed Ryan’s leadership, on and off the court,” says his mother, Julie. Ryan also excels academically and has earned a place on the Dean's list every semester in Middle School, she said. Being a Spartan has done more than just made Ryan a force on the court. It has built his self-esteem and helped develop his confidence. These leadership skills and qualities combined with the friendship he has formed will serve him well throughout his life. The Spartan experience has and will continue to impact Ryan's life in a positive way. Expect great things from Ryan, he has already proven that he has a great ability and an intense passion for the game.
