Senseless double murder in spaza shop robbery Public memorial service held to remember slain Kwa George staff PETER LUHANGA ILISO LABANTU
A
mother of three young children and a man were shot dead during an attempted robbery at the Green Container spaza shop in Usasadza Street, Dunoon on Sunday 2 February. The brazen killing of Ntombie Kuwane, 28, and Mike Banda, 30, has left the Dunoon community stunned. Kuwane, who was living in Kwa 5 informal settlement, leaves behind three children aged seven months, four years, and six years old. Kuwane and Banda worked for the Dunoon business tycoon fondly known by the community as ‘bra George’. The victims were sitting in a car parked outside their spaza shop when one thug, according to community leaders, entered the spaza NTOMBIE KUWANE, a mom of three young children and a man were shot shop and opened dead during an attempted robbery in Dunoon. fire inside. When Banda shouted to the shop keeper inside to duck under the counter, the criminal’s accomplice sitting in a getaway car overheard, stormed out of the car and opened fire at Banda, killing him on the spot, and proceeded to shoot at Kuwane who was in the passenger seat in the company car. Both died at the scene. Milnerton SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nopaya Madyibi confirms the killing. “We can confirm the incident but because of the sensitivity of [the] investigation we cannot divulge information as the case is still under investigation,” said Madyibi. Scores of residents, most of them women, attended a vigil for Kuwane and Banda outside the Green Container on Tuesday, February 4. Apostle James Mpithi led prayers and sung hymns of worship, some people shed tears as they remembered the lives of their murdered neighbours. Mpithi said the thugs could be people who are known in the community and even attended church service and sought letters from the church to
confirm their place of birth. But, he said, it was concerning that their relatives and neighbours would not reveal their identities to the authorities so they could be arrested. “Some of these skollies come to fetch confirmation of birth letters from church which means they are amongst us…they come to attend church [service] yet they kill people…we can search for them they are around us, they are here amongst us…we can find them. They [the thugs] are not unknown. They are not strangers,” he said. Chairman of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Dunoon branch, Sinethemba Matomela, said the community was outraged at the murders. “We will work with the police to help find perpetrators,” said Matomela. A public memorial service was held on Wednesday 12 February at the Dunoon municipal hall to enable residents pay their respects to Kuwane and Banda.
