Schools excel in nuclear debate

PETER LUHANGA With their excellent communication skills and logical arguments, the Bloubergrant High School debating team emerged as the winner of the 2018 Eskom School Nuclear Debate tournament hosted by the Koeberg nuclear power station.

The is the second time in a row they have won the competition.

The power station celebrated the Bloubergrant High School debating team’s excellence on 16 November by handing over certificates and iPads to each of the school’s debate team members. The school also walked away with the floating trophy.

“We appreciate the success of the school. You can educate the nation by getting its children to learn. It seems we are going to leave the floating trophy here permanently,” joked the power plant’s stakeholder manager Lewis Phidza.

He said perhaps they should just call it the Bloubergrant trophy.

“The reason for the prizes is to encourage them to do more research and have resources to source more academic work. They did very well and their scores were very close, the only difference was a 1% point,” said Phidza.

The second-placed Melkbosstrand High school team were also presented with iPads and certificates at a separate ceremony held at the school.

The School’s Nuclear Debate programme, now in its 13th year, provides learners from participating high schools a platform to develop research skills and debate topics around nuclear and renewable energy while gaining insight into the sector.

The three-day debate ran from 1 to 3

October using the Round Robin format which ensures each team debates every other participating team.

This year’s participating schools were Inkwenkwezi High, Bloubergrant High, CBC St Johns, Parklands College, Melkbosstrand High, and Atlantis Secondary School.

The selection of the participating schools was, as in previous years, due to their location within the nuclear power station’s emergency planning zone, but plans are underway to expand the programme to incorporate other schools in the Western Cape, and thereafter expand it to national level.

Debate topics, selected by the host, change every year, and among selected topics debated this year were: South Africa cannot do with nuclear energy vs South Africa can do without nuclear energy. The topic for the grand finale was: there is no problem to nuclear waste.

The debate was judged by a panel of five adjudicators who are specialists in different fields at the Koeberg nuclear power station. “(The learners) kids are doing excellently. The level of the debate is really comparable to excellence. The two schools (debating in round 1 on the first day; Bloubergrant High and Melkbosstrand High) could go debate this topic internationally with any other school because they have confidence and the topic is well researched from both sides,” said adjudicator Mark Maree.

Maree said in round 1 the adjudicating panel unanimously awarded the Bright Spark award to Sinalo Ncisana from Bloubergrant High debate team, and to Tawana Chibaduki from Melkbosstrand High.

“She displayed good use of notes, good

eye contact, the projection of voice in terms of tone and volume, using gestures and body movements…she displayed total confidence,” he said.

In the grand finale on October 3, Bloubergrant High squared off against Melkbosstrand High, with Bloubergrant High emerging as the winner.

“You did very well. I wish I was like you when I was your age but I wasn’t,” said adjudicator Bravance Mashele when announcing the final scores.

“Everyone was a bright spark, but we had to choose one. Adjudicators were very impressed with both teams,” said Mashele.

Mahele said there was very little difference between the scores..

“That’s how good you are [but] in every debate there’s always a winner,” she said.

“I won two Bright Spark awards throughout the three-day debate tournament. I was surprised but sort of saw it coming,” said Ncisana.

“I feel proud of my accomplishments.

It’s more a win for the team than a personal achievement. I wouldn’t have won it if it was not for team members,” said Chibaduki.

Grade 8 and 9 English teacher at Melkbosstrand High, Andrea Jonkers, said although it was a bit of disappointment not winning first place, coming second was a big accomplishment.

“I am proud of my learners, they should be proud of themselves as well,” said Jonkers.

Business Studies teacher at Bloubergrant High, Faith Moyo, congratulated her debate team for winning the tournament again.

Moyo also heaped praise on the Melkbosstrand High school, saying they put in good work.

Workers fired as MyCiTi strike enters seventh week

From page 1 Striking workers Iso laBantu spoke to outside the Civic Centre on 21 November when they managed to gain access and shut the building down until lunchtime, said Herron was supposed to meet them at the start of their wildcat strike, on October 15.

The strikers said the meeting was postponed to October 16 but he failed to meet them again on that day.

Asked why he failed to meet them, Herron said although there was no direct employment relationship between the City and the workers, he was willing to engage with those on strike through their union representative, or even with them directlly if they were able to select any leadership.

“It became clear that the workers who were on strike had been encouraged or instigated to strike by the EFF who had promised them that they would achieve ‘insourcing’,” said Herron, who resigned from his position, and the DA, on 1 November.

“I was not prepared to be part of this political opportunism and theatre by the EFF.”

Two hijacking suspects arrested in Dunoon After refusing a request by two men to join them in a robbery, a Dunoon man had his car hijacked at gunpoint.

The incident occurred on 11 November as the man was parking his car outside his home.

Herron said the strikers, who are employed by Vehicle Operating Companies (VOCs) contracted by the City, were acting in bad faith.

He said following a strike in April and May this year over working conditions, an agreement was reached at the South African Road Passenger Bus Bargaining Council. Part of the agreement was there would be no further industrial action before 2020. But the employees broke this agreement just four months later.

He said there had been no complaint from any employee that a VOC was not sticking to the agreement that had been reached in May, and no grievance had been raised with their union.

“These workers simply went on a wildcat strike and were initially unable to articulate what their grievance was,” says Herron.

EFF Cape metro secretary, Banzi Dambuza, said they agreed to join the strike after being requested by the MyCiTi workers.

“It was supposed to be a one day strike but the City, instead of providing a platform to talk, they hired private security companies, deployed law enforcement

officers and called the SAPS to guard the Civic Centre station,” said Dambuza.

He said the EFF had repeatedly attempted to arrange meetings with Herron but their efforts were rebuffed.

“The EFF tried to arrange meetings with Herron but he lied on numerous times promising to meet but did not.

Herron became arrogant and instead of addressing the workers concerns, he attacked the EFF including the workers calling them EFF puppets,” he said.

He also said that the EFF will push for a motion in council to have the workers insourced by the City and lobby other political parties including the DA to support their motion.

Drivers dismissed Meanwhile, many of the striking workers have been fired.

Kidrogen VOC has has confirmed the dismissal of 80 bus drivers who have been on an unprotected strike since 15 October.

The employees were previously taxi drivers and were trained as bus drivers by the City of Cape Town following the rollout and implementation of the MyCiTi service on the west coast road, which was a means of transitioning the taxi drivers and gaatjies to the new transport system. The taxi bosses were given shares in the VOCs when they were formed in 2011.

But the bus drivers, and other workers employed as cleaners, cashiers, and ambassadors (who check tickets and assist commuters), are demanding the City employ them directly because their Citycontracted employees have been mistreating them.

As a result, they have gone without pay for six weeks so far and now have no job to go back to.

Chief executive officer at Kidrogen VOC, Andile Peter, said he fired 80 drivers on Monday 19 November after he had asked them “nicely” to get back to work.

“They are no longer our employees. We requested them to come back but they didn’t. We are going to employ new drivers,” said Peter.

Following their dismissal, the irate MyCiTi bus drivers shut down the Civic Centre for most of Wednesday 21 November after about 200 workers entered the building in the morning and held their protest in the building’s public areas.

Smaller groups of about 40 sang and toyitoyied at the various entrances, which were belatedly shuttered and guarded.

At around 11.30am, police detonated stun grenades to disperse the strikers at the station deck entrance when the protest escalated as civil servants attempted to gain entry to their workplace.

The civil servants who were not in the building before the early morning lockdown remained stranded outside and bided their time in surrounding coffeeshops, while those who had been at their desks remained locked in until about 1.30pm. Members of the public who had spent transported money or even taken the day off to attend to business with the City, waited resignedly on nearby benches.

None of the four drivers were willing to be named as they said they feared their employees, who were former taxi bosses, would target them.

Among the complaints aired by the striking workers were that their salaries were below what was promised, with one driver saying he was promised R15,000 a month when he started in 2012 but at present was only earning R8,000. Meanwhile, he said, his manager, whose education level was Grade 4, earned R35,000 a month.

A pregnant woman who was in one of the holding cells at Table View police station went into labour and gave birth in the police station on 8 November.

Table View police spokesperson Adriana Chandler said the 23-year-old woman gave birth to a daughter with help of Community Medics, Fabio Moreira and Kevin Jones.

Chandler said “community members” kept her calm until medics arrived.

It is unclear whether the woman was being detained or seeking shelter at the police station, but following the birth, the

new mother and her baby were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are doing well.

The station bought the new mom some necessary items and she received a care package from the victim support room, kindly provided by Women Against Rape, Chandler said.

Acting Stations Commander Lt Cnl Hendrik Nel thanked Moreira and Jones for delivering the baby safely. The new mother expressed gratitude to everyone who helped her.

Thousands of litres of festive season booze including a R5,000 bottle of tequila were disposed of on 15 November.

The liquor was disposed of by the City in a warehouse in Ndabeni after inviting press to witness the spectacle which appears to be designed to show the City is not profiting from confiscated goods, and to act as a warning to obey the relevant bylaws.

Most of the 16,926 containers of booze, valued at over R300,000, had been confiscated from beach goers who tried to slip past the City’s ban on drinking in public.

City mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said most of the hooch had been confiscated over three days during last year’s festive season. These were the switching on of the festive season lights, boxing day (now known as the Day of Goodwill), and New Year’s day, on which Capetonians traditionally flock to the beaches.

At the 2017 festive lights celebration, 1,818 bottles were confiscated, with 2,126 removed from beachgoers on boxing day and 3,805 taken away onNew Year’s day.

Smith said it seemed some people believed they couldn’t have fun without alcohol. “The reality is that this blatant disregard for the law and the impact of their drinking and antisocial behaviour forces us to dedicate enforcement resources that could have been better utilised elsewhere.”

He said the fact people concealed alcohol on beaches and public places showed they knew they were breaking the law.

Among trends law enforcement officers had noticed, was people using children to smuggle alcohol, decanting liquor into cooldrink bottles, and choosing open access beaches such as Strand, Camps Bay and Clifton over beaches where access control is in effect and where vehicles and bags are searched upon arrival.

He said people who are found with alcohol are fined R500 and provided with a receipt listing the exact items confiscated in the event that they wanted to reclaim their goods upon paying an impoundment release fee of R624.

It was not clear why no-one reclaimed the R5,000 bottle of tequila.

He says the confiscated alcohol was kept in storage for three months, during which time people could claim it. Thereafter, it is disposed of in terms of the City’s by-laws. “The destruction of alcohol usually elicits varied responses, from those fully in support to others who are aghast at the waste of good alcohol,” said Smith.

However, he said the City could not sell the alcohol as it did not have a liquor license to do so.

“There is no argument that we are confiscating (the alcohol) for profiteering.”

The reason for last week’s spectacle was the need to clear the storage facility before the new festive season gets underway.

City’s safety and security director Richard Bosman said most liquor was confiscated at the beaches of Muizenberg, Strandfontein, Monwabisi, the entire Strand coastline, Sea Point, and Maidens Cove.

“Beers and ciders were the biggest category of alcohol confiscation on the beach last year. After that we had your bubbly, spirits, and papsak.”

He said some people tried to get past the law by burying a papsak in the sand with just a straw sticking out.

Smith said much of the City’s festive season planning revolved around mitigating the impact of alcohol by, for instance, increasing the number of lifeguards on beaches as alcohol was one of the main contributors to drownings.

He said overtime budgets were exhausted to ensure law enforcement increased their presence on the roads to prevent drunk driving, and over the last few years the City had implemented the identikidz project at priority beaches to safeguard unsupervised children who got lost or hurt.

A number of departments would join the overall effort to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Joining law enforcement was rescue services, transport, and cleansing services.

Additionally, he said he had never received a copy of his contract, a copy of which had been handed to him to sign at 5.30am one morning while he was driving the bus on 18 April, 2012. This was despite having since asked numerous times for a copy.

The drivers said they received no medical aid and the VOC he worked for, Kidrogen, had dodged questions about his provident fund.

On the other side of the Civic Centre, Agnes Nontsingane, who worked as a cleaner at MyCiti stations under contract to Metro Cleaners, said she wanted to be insourced as working conditions were poor and there were unexplained pay disparities among employees who did the same job.

Nontsingane said she had been working for City-contracted Metro Cleaners since 2013 and although she was supposed to clean up anything from faeces to vomit, she was never sure whether gloves and face masks would be available for the job. Additionally, there were significant pay disparities among employees, and only two of the 29 MyCiti stations had canteen facilities where staff could make tea or coffee, or eat their lunch. On rainy days she had nowhere to eat her lunch except in the toilets where she worked.

She said new mayor Dan Plato met the workers on 15 November, but no resolu-

tion was found and the workers continue to gather at the Civic Centre every day, demanding to be insourced.

Burning buses More than one driver said while they had been striking the VOCs had re-employed former drivers who had been dismissed for various offences. The drivers

believed it was these drivers, who harboured grievances about having been previously fired, who had been burning and vandalising buses.

The latest bus burning took place on

the day of the Civic Centre shutdown.

This brings the tally to four, while three others have been vandalised. This is despite a court interdict against the striking workers having been handed out on 18 October, ordering they remain at least 100m from MyCiti buses, depots, and stations.

The City’s new mayco member for Transport and Urban Development, Felicity Purchase, said the damage to the MyCiTi service amounts to about R18 million.

Purchase said there was “some consolation” in the fact that one of three suspects involved in the attack on the MyCiTi bus in Milnerton on 21 November, was arrested.

“The arrest was made in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act. This Act, which relates to the damage of essential infrastructure, allows for stricter bail conditions and imprisonment of up to 30 years and a fine of up to R100 million,” said Purchase.

employee arrested for card-cloning device A 30-year-old waiter at a popular restaurant in Blouberg was arrested by a specialised police unit on 21 November for possession of a card cloning device used to fraudulently copy bank customer details stored on their bank card’s magnetic strip.

Table View police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler said the waiter had a handheld skimming device, a booklet with evidence of bank card numbers, card verification code numbers and expiry dates.

Chandler said the bank had noticed suspicious transactions linked to this restaurant and the waiter who assisted with the transactions was traced.

This information was then relayed to the specialised unit on 14 November.

The police urged the community to always be in control of their bank cards and never let the person handling the card be out of sight.

Police nab four Cows milked Dan Plato armed robbers with sun’s promises

Police arrested four men in Dunoon Site 5 after a liquor store in Milnerton’s Turf Club Road was robbed on 16 November.

Brandishing a firearm, the robbers had entered the outlet and taken cigarettes, liquor, and cash before fleeing in a light blue Ford Laser, said Milnerton police spokesperson Captain Nopaya Madyibi.

An alert giving a description of the car and suspects was sent to police in the area the car was spotted driving down Koeberg Road towards Du Noon informal settlement at around 8am the same day.

Madyibi said the men matched the description of the suspects involved in the business robbery.

Police searched for the car and found it parked off a sandy road in Site 5 informal settlement. They called for back-up and swooped. Neither the firearm nor the stolen property was found. Cell phones found on the suspects were handed in for evidence collection. Although the car was not reported stolen, it was linked to a criminal case in Fish Hoek and was also booked in as evidence. One of the suspects was also linked to a sexual offence in Milnerton which occurred in 2017.

The suspects, ranging in age from late twenties to late forties, were arrested and taken to Milnerton Police Station. They appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on 19 November.

Cows at the Fair Cape Dairy Welgegund farm in Durbanville will now be milked with machines running off renewable power rather than drawing from the national grid.

A partnership between Fair Cape Dairies and SOLA Future Energy saw the launch of a solar PV (photovoltaic) plant at the farm on the International Day for Climate Action, which was on October 24.

The PV project produces 166,125 kWh, saving 147 tons of CO2 emissions per year, according SOLA Future Energy chairperson Chris Haw. This was 16% of the farm’s current consumption of 1,053,295 kWh per year, said Fair Cape Dairies CEO Melt Loubse.

The farm also recycles its own water, saving about 250,000 litres a day.

A listening tour to hear first-hand concerns from citizens is a priority for Dan Plato as he takes the reins as Cape Town’s new executive mayor.

“I am very much aware of the challenges facing our communities, but I want to give the people of this city a chance to engage with me, and I am calling on them not to let gatekeepers undermine them,” Plato said at his inauguration ceremony.

Another top priority, he said, was addressing policing, which remains a major concern.

He said he would recruit more Metro Police for the City to complement the role of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

He commended the deployment of the specialised gang unit in the province but said “the reality is that we have fewer SAPS officers now than we have had in recent years”.

The situation of low levels of police in the city cannot be allowed, he said.

While the rest of the country has one police officer for every 369 people, the ratio of was one to 560.

“Our police need the extra resources, and our communities need the extra police.”

Plato lauded provincial minister Alan Winde, and Wesgro, for their accomplishment in bringing investment to Cape Town, which contributed to the city having the lowest unemployment rate compared to other major cities in South Africa.

“There are, however, still people without jobs, so while we are proud of our achievements, we cannot sit back and say that our work is done.”

The new mayor also thanked the residents who went out of their way to drastically reduce water use and change their approach to this scarce resource.

Call for dam to be fenced after child drowns The drowning of a five-year-old in October has revived demands for the fencing of four dams in Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape.

Luniko Mthabatha drowned on 14 October when he slipped and fell while playing with other children near the dam in Ntshingeni Village, his family said.

Residents say several people have drowned in the open dams in the area in the last few years.

Community leader Monwabisi Xekethwana said four dams had been

built in the village during the apartheid era to supply neighbouring farms. One had been fenced but the other three had not been fenced, he said.

“Some of our villagers use them for their livestock for drinking and for irrigation in our gardens. But that is not important, we want these dams fenced because not only children are at danger here but elders too’’, said Xekethwana.

He said the dam where Luniko drowned had claimed seven lives. A teenage girl had drowned last year, he said.

SAMWU calls for workers not to vandalise property during strike CHRIS GILILI Buffalo City Metro infrastructure was vandalised over the weekend, amid the strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU). On the weekend the Braelyn Learners Licence Traffic Department was burnt, and has been closed for now. The Quigney Electrical Power Station was also burnt.

The water and electricity supply in Mdantsane has been disrupted for over a week. City Spokesperson Bathandwa Diamond said, “Water pumps and electrical boxes were damaged in Mdantsane which has caused a delay in supply since last week. But currently talks are still ongoing. We will know maybe by Wednesday if the strike continues, or it will end.”

The striking workers are demanding permanent employment of temporary workers and an improvement in their working conditions.

In a statement released over the weekend the Metro said, “The Buffalo City Metro sends its sincere apologies to its residents, visitors and business community for the unfortunate events that have been taking place since Tuesday afternoon.” The statement described the strike, which has been taking place in King Williams Town, Bhisho, Mdantsane and East London, as “illegal”. It blamed “acts of anarchy” for “sabotaging of ser-

vices to our people”.

The statement said: “It is our plea that the municipal workers who feel that they are exercising their right to protest should do so within the labour laws and should not infringe on the rights of others. Throughout this process, we have been negotiating in good faith with the recognised union leaders, despite the wildcat strike that is not protected as there has not been any dispute declared.”

The statement further explained that negotiations are still ongoing between the municipality and recognised union leaders, with the hope of resolving all the issues. Strikers include garbage collectors, firefighters and security guards working for the municipality.

SAMWU’s campaigns organiser Zola Capucapu distanced the union from the allegations of violence. “We have advised our member to stop with any vandalism of municipal property. If anyone is found to be involved with any form vandalism in the name of SAMWU, the law must take its course.”

He said the that the union met with Mayor Xola Pakati and the provincial leadership of the ANC on Sunday. He said there would be a further meeting on Monday. By Tuesday “we can confirm if the strike will continue or not”.

Nombongi Mthabatha, grandmother of Luniko, said her grandson was in grade R at Ntshingeni Primary School. He had come back from school with other children and then gone out again and one of the other children had come to tell the family what had happened.

“It was the horror of my life when I arrived at the dam. The community was there surrounding the dam. No one could jump in and save my grandson’s life because the dam was overflowing with water. We had to wait for police to call the divers from Mthatha,” she said in tears.

The dam had to be partly drained be-

fore the divers’ search could start.

“I could not believe my eyes when they came out with the corpse of my little grandson. Even now, I am unable to shake off that image.’’

She said the children had been told not to play near the dam. “We always warn them to never go near this dam because it is too big and scary. It was worse that day because it was heavily raining the previous day,” she said.

Luniko’s mother Sinawo Mathabatha could not talk to GroundUp. Councillor Neliswa Godini said she had been told by the municipality that the dams were not fenced because they were leaking and had first to be fixed. But, she said, fencing would not be enough anyway to keep the children safe. One dam was fenced but children played inside because the gate was not locked.

Siphiwo Ntsabo from the Department of Water and Sanitation said the department would have to find out if these were municipal or departmental dams. “I am not trying to shift the blame, but it is important to first discover the ownership of the dams. After that we can come up with a solution to address this issue of the drownings.”

He said the department had a Dam Safety Awareness programme to educate people about preventing drowning and a team would go to the village while the ownership of the dam was being investigated.

If the dams were the responsibility of the department, a meeting would be held with the community to discuss issues of fencing. Some in the village might not like the idea of fencing because of their livestock, he said.

Malmesbury residents march against high utility bills

“Two weeks before my husband gets paid, we have no food in the house.”

Upset about high utility bills, Wesbank residents in Malmesbury took to the streets on Wednesday. Most of them were women. Some pushed babies in prams. They marched to the Swartland municipal office.

They were also protesting against poor state services.

They carried placards reading “Fight for your right” and “We are not f***dup”.

The residents, some of them pension-

ers, walked for one hour and 20 minutes from 9am, arriving at the municipal offices at 10:20am.

The march to the municipal offices was heavily monitored by police with seven vans, and one nyala closely following the group of fewer than 100 people.

“We are protesting against high water and electricity bills. Municipal officials don’t come to read our water meters but send us a municipal water bill of R2,500

for an RDP house and R4,000 for a normal house,” said Margeree Vermeulen, 34, a mother of two.

Vermeulen says for the past eight months she has been charged R2,600 for water yet her husband is at work during the day and her children are at school.

She is a stay-at-home wife, she said. “It is very difficult … Two weeks before my husband gets paid, we have no food in the house. We literally struggle. There is nothing in the house and we must pay high water bills every month.”

Pensioner, Sophia Julies, 71, is a widow.

She lives alone in a municipal flat. She

says she joined the march because she is upset with the municipality as it disconnected her electricity power supply when she could not pay it.

She depends on her state pension grant of R1,700 a month to survive.

60-year-old Janette Oerson protested because her water bill for November is R3,876.25. “If you come at the municipal offices, the officials don’t listen to you … they just say f*** off to hell. What irritates us most in Malmesbury is that we are treated like we are still in apartheid.”

Ann Lategan, 75, has been applying to the municipality to subsidise her rent in the municipal flat she rents but her efforts have so far been fruitless. This prompted her to join the march. She says she spends R800 for rent including water and pays R500 separately for electricity.

A memorandum listed a range of grievances, including accusations that municipal officials and ward councillors failed to discharge their duties fully, and that municipal by-laws negatively affect “our community”.

The leader of the march, Amber Booysen, and three other community leaders handed over the memo to Mayor Tjimen Van Essen who was accompanied by his deputy, Maude Goliath, and the municipal manager, Joggie Scholtz. Van Essen signed the memo then walked away without addressing the protesters and also refused to take questions from the media.

The municipality’s corporate services director, Madelaine Terblanche, replying to GroundUp via email, said that the mayor would respond in two to three weeks.

sanitation and other basic services.

Led by the Social Justice Coalition (SJC), they came from Ses’khona in Philippi East, Nkandla in Kraaifontein, Island in Makhaza Khayelitsha, Green Point in Khayelitsha and KK Section in

Khayelitsha.

In a detailed memorandum, addressed to Executive Mayor Dan Plato, the residents highlight their right to water under the Constitution.

“We live in informal settlements where there is no adequate access to water and in some of our communities there are no taps or toilets at all,” they said. “The water crisis has been averted for those who have always lived with water excess …

While others breathe sighs of relief we are still in crisis, we have always been in crisis,” they said.

The memorandum said the City budget for standpipes in informal settlements had been reduced from R4 million to R1 million in the 2018-9 budget. “The City has not concerned itself with the needs of its poorest residents.”

“The issue of water is just the primary issue. We live in complete squalor! We have no toilets and no electricity either,” the residents said in the memorandum.

Their demands included: a meeting with Plato; taps and drains; full flush toilets; electricity; refuse collection; and a response from the City within ten days.

Ses’khona residents, who live on private land, have no toilets or electricity and use water from a dirty stream nearby.

Sinovuyo Swelindawo has been living in KK section for 11 years. She lives with two young children and her brother.

“We have no toilets and electricity. We are forced to illegally connect electricity which is dangerous. There have been children who have been electrocuted in the area,” she told GroundUp. “We are also in desperate need of a container where we can dump our garbage. Our area is turning into a dump site because we have nowhere to throw our rubbish.”

Nkandla resident Phathiswa Morris said “I have been living in Nkandla for a year and there are no toilets, water or electricity. We use buckets to relieve ourselves and then go and dump the contents in a nearby drain.”

“Other residents resort to digging holes in a field as toilets. There are seven of us in our shack. My children sometimes go to school stinking because they have not washed because there is no water. I have been called countless times to their school because of this”.

The memorandum was accepted and signed by City Council Director for Safety and Security Richard Bosman. He said he would deliver the memorandum to Plato.

Local victory signs off record breaking season for Kristoffersson STAFF WRITER

It was Sweden’s Johan Kristofferson who got to spray the sparkling wine at the World RX of South Africa this past weekend.

The Swede was driving for PSRX Volkswagen in the final round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy.

Kristoffersson set the three fastest qualifying times to claim TQ (top qualifier) position in his Volkswagen Polo R on World RX’s second visit to Cape Town’s Killarney International Raceway, before winning both semi-final one and the final to secure his record breaking 11th win of the season.

EKS Audi Sport’s Mattias Ekstrom started on the third row of the grid for the final in his Audi S1 and with a strong start, climbed to second during the race, after also having secured second in the World RX Drivers’ Championship when his team mate Andreas Bakkerud retired from the semi-finals. Team Peugeot Total’s Sebastien Loeb completed his third full World RX programme with another podium appearance after being on the track in his Peugeot 208, having finished ahead of team mate Kevin Hansen in the final.

“I have to say today is quite emotional. This season comes to an end and it’s been a fantastic year for me, really the world championship title sinks in a little bit more now. I really have to thank this great team, they have done everything for me,” said Kristoffersson “Without them it wouldn’t be possible. I have said that so many times since my first victory in Belgium 2017, but this one meant a lot to me.”

Ekstrom was pleased to finish his year on the podium. “We actually came to Cape Town to win the race. We were fast throughout the entire weekend, but somehow didn’t get into the right rhythm,” said Ekstrom. “In the final things finally fell into place. Second is a fantastic result and a good end to a long season, in which Johan was always a small step ahead. Even so, I’m extremely proud of the entire team: We extracted the maximum from our resources. It was also a fabulous year with Andreas. We had a lot of fun together and have something to celebrate this evening.”

Loeb set the fastest time in Q1 on Saturday and finished on the podium for the seventh time in 2018.

Loeb. “I think we had good performance, we tried to improve some details and here in the last race were really competitive. I had a good weekend and finally to be third overall, I’m happy.”

PSRX Volkswagen Sweden’s Petter Solberg won the Monster Energy Supercharge Award for having the fastest reaction time at the start of the final in his Volkswagen Polo R, but retired on the second lap after a spin. Team Peugeot Total’s Timmy Hansen joined team mate Loeb on the second row of the grid for the final but retired after contact with Solberg’s car.

GRX Taneco Team’s Timur Timerzyanov and GC Kompetition’s Anton Marklund finished fourth in the semi-finals and didn’t progress to the final. Team STARD’s Janis Baumanis finished fifth in semi-final one, but EKS Audi Sport’s Andreas Bakkerud retired with a technical issue. ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport’s Timo Scheider was fifth in semifinal two but GC Kompetition’s Guerlain Chicherit retired on the fifth lap.

GRX’s Niclas Gronholm was first reserve for the semi-finals in 13th and Olsbergs MSE’s Kevin Eriksson and Robin Larsson concluded their 2018 seasons in 14th and 15th. Sebastien Loeb Racing’s Gregoire Demoustier finished his first full World RX campaign 17th in South Africa.

Norway’s Ben Philip-Gundersen won the final round of the RX2 International Series ahead of compatriot Sondre Evjen and Latvia’s Vasily Gryazin. Sweden’s Oliver Eriksson entered the final round locked in a battle with Belgium’s Guillaume De-Ridder for the title and wrapped up the single-make championship by qualifying for the final. Eriksson led on lap one but stopped with technical issues and was classified sixth. Sweden’s William Nilsson finished fourth and Finland’s Sami-Matti Trogen was fifth.

Paul Bellamy, World RX Managing Director for IMG, concluded: “It’s been a really good season with a lot of new things that we’ve done, starting off with the Speedmachine Festival at Silverstone for the first time and going to COTA for our first trip to America. We’re seeing the best rallycross driver ever in our championship in Johan and that’s something that I think should be embraced. He’s just so good. The crowds have been good all year, the live streaming has been a big success and overall it’s been a busy and hectic year which has finished with the festival atmosphere here in Cape Town.

The South African people have a motorsports history and they are so pleased that we’re here. Coming to South Africa has really helped rallycross get on the map out here and we are delighted by that.”

Soccer clubs do the Makaleni

DAVID ROSSOUW A soccer tournament funded by the municipal ward allocation for Dunoon has been hailed as a huge success.

Several local teams vie for the trophy offered by the four-year-old tournament, which is named after the longstanding councillor for ward 104, Lubabalo Makeleni.

Having kicked off on 17 November this year, there were fireworks in the knock-

out stages as teams got eliminated in the fight to be one of the eight at the quarter finals. A couple of the teams Iso laBantu spoke to said the 25-minute match format may have disadvantaged them as they were not used to it.

Due to delays at the start, the final, and the match for third and fourth places couldn’t take place on Sunday 18 November as planned. They were postponed to Saturday 24 November.

In a tight quarter-final against Pioneer,

Liverpool advanced to the semifinal on penalties, to face Juventus. But Juventus took Liverpool down 5-4 on penalties in the semifinal. Meanwhile, Bambanani took on African Stars and won 2-0.

Battling for third position, Liverpool provided their supporters with some consolation as they took African Stars out with 5 goals to nil.

The final between Juventas and Bambanani was a lot tighter. Bambanani put the ball in the net in the first half and

Juventas came back desperately seeking an equaliser in the second half. It was not to be. Instead, Bambanani put another one through the posts and sealed Juventus’s fate.

At the awards ceremony, Bambanani were very excited when they received their winning trophy and medals, but the competing teams were just as happy.

All the participating clubs applauded Makeleni, who was elected on an ANC ticket, for his contribution to sports.
