Foetus found dumped

A

foetus was found dumped next to a pile of domestic refuse a long Thuthezela Street in Dunoon’s section 28 on Thursday, March 23.

The foetus, which appeared to have been aborted, was wrapped in a red bathing towel, onto of it was a City of Cape Town branded blue refuse bag.

Resident Cleo Patra, who run a hair and beauty salon in the same street, made the shocking discovery when she heard a pop sound coming from the refuse that was burning on the side of the road not far from her hair and beauty salon.“I wanted to remove the refuse bag to let the refuse burn properly, then I saw the towel when I opened it there was a baby wrapped in it, I screamed and called residents to come see,” said Cleo.

Shortly after the discovery, residents mostly mothers gathered to take a look at the foetus, some took photographs with their smart phones. Police were called to the scene, who used a yellow crime scene tape to cordon off both sides of the street. An official from the

It is unclear how many weeks old was the foetus, but it appeared fully developed, a little developed leg could be seen.

Mother of two children Yolanda Jack, 35, said she was shocked. She said after they were alerted to the dumped foetus, they visited couple of young pregnant women in the street suspecting that they might have committed the abortion but found their pregnancies intact even after checking if they were fleeing they found no trace of evidence.

She said that left them with no suspect. “Its very bad. I don’t even know how to explain it,” said Jack.“As parents we don’t like it…and the kids that saw the foetus were shocked and left truamatised,” said Andiswa Rocolo, 39, a mother of three children. Provincial police did not reply to requests for comment despite repeated follow-ups.

Dunoon flat collapse: little girl pulled out alive PETER LUHANGA seven-year-old girl buried completely under rubble was pulled out alive several minutes after a wall of a neighbouring RDP house undergoing unauthorised upgrades, collapsed on the roof of her RDP house.

Neighbours used their bare hands to claw away the rubble and pulled her out alive.

Her mother - who was in the house at the time - was slightly injured as she stormed out of the house with bricks raining on her, screaming for help. Another woman staying in a one room shack at the back yard of the RDP house situated in Denneboom Avenue, Dunoon, was critically injured after the collapsed wall completely flattened her shack.

She was rushed to Groot Schuur hospital. The incident happened on Wednesday 1 March 2017 at 18:43, police confirmed. Provincial police spokesman Captain Van Wyk, said three people were injured one of them critically and was rushed to Groot Schuur hospital. The collapse of the wall of the RDP wall house which is being upgraded to a multi storey block apartment, vindicates Isolabantu News story, Isolabantu News January 2017 edition, that called into question the safety of the unauthorised building works proliferating rapidly in Dunoon.

Illegally extended blocks of flats are staring tower above surrounding houses and backyard shacks in Dunoon. Entrepreneurs are now building up to four-storey apartment block of flats to rent. When the wall collapsed on the roof of her RDP house, Aneliswe Tokwe, 25, a wife and mother of two children, a boy aged five, and daughter aged seven who was buried underneath the rubble, told Isolabantu News that when

the wall hit her RDP house roof, the blast sounded like a bomb. “It was so loud. Bricks fell on my head. I heard my daughter Sinalo screaming for help, Bricks were hitting me as I ran outside for help. When we got back we couldn’t hear her screaming, we only saw a mountain of rubble,” said Tokwe. Her husband, Lunga, who was at work at the time, said the incident made him angry. “I am just glad that my daughter is alive. My wife was rushed to the hospital. I am very upset.

These structures are just being built without authorities inspecting and approving building plans. There is no proof that the builders are qualified. They are in high demand so they build fast to move onto another client,” said Lunga. He said most of his valuables were destroyed.

Neighbour Themba Mdludlu, said he was first to arrive at the scene and begun digging into the mountain of rubble in search for Sinalo.

Later he was joined by three more guys.

“It was so bad. We pulled her (Sinalo) out alive. It’s a miracle,” said Mdludlu. Zekenime Hoyo, 43, his shack in the back yard of the RDP house was flattened completely, his wife was critically injured and rushed to Groot Schuur hospital. He said it made him angry to think that he nearly lost his wife because entrepreneurs want to make money by illegally extending their RDP houses engendering the safety of others. Ward 104 ANC councilor, Lubabalo Makeleni said it was unfortunate that entrepreneurs continued to build dangerous multi-story block of flats.

Makeleni said the City has halted construction of at least two dangerous buildings cause of safety concerns. “It is unfortunate that the city took too long to change the Less Formal Townships Establishment Act. We

he City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate is rolling out a multi-pronged plan to contribute to road safety efforts over the upcoming school holiday and Easter weekend.

Driver behaviour and vehicle fitness are two crucial elements in ensuring road safety. It is for this reason that the City’s vehicle testing centres will also make free vehicle checks available for the week of 3 to 7 April 2017, from 08:00 until 14:00 daily at their testing stations in areas like Belville, Durbanville, Goodwood etc. The checks include tyres, brakes, wipers, etc.“These free vehicle checks are not a full roadworthy test. They are instead designed to flag anything that requires attention before motorists embark on road trips. It is always good to have a general sense of the state of your vehicle and what needs work, or not as the case may be,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

In addition, the City’s Traffic Service will launch Operation Exodus on Friday 7 April 2017. This operation focuses specifically on driver and vehicle fitness in the long-distance public transport sector and will run until Thursday 13 April 2017.

Thugs spare gogo`s business PETER LUHANGA

T

hugs terrorise people in the streets and take their money and other belongings but gogo Nofanishala Mpanga (66) knows how to deal with them.

Gogo Mpanga who eke out a living by selling cow offal in Makhaya Khayelitsha, told ilisolabantu that thugs spare her because she gives them meat for free. “They don’t bother me, whenever they come I just give them some meat,” she said. Gogo Mpanga has been selling cow offal for more than 30 years and she has managed to send her children to school from the business. “For now I look after my grandchildren and my one of my children who is unemployed. This business has taken care of me, that’s the only job I know,” she said. Gogo Mpanga said it’s only three years ago when took a break from the business after she fell sick.

“I went to the Eastern Cape three years back because I was sick, after I got better I came back to Western Cape and continued with my business,” she told ilisolabantu. She charges R5 for a piece of fried cow intestine.

“She knows how to prepare them well because if you buy from her once you are always tempted to come for the second time. They are affordable so I often buy two pieces to eat with pap,” said Mchambo. Gogo Mpanga said her business is mostly good during weekends and month end. “People relax during weekends when they are not at work so they send their kids to come buy the intestines. When it’s a month end I prepare myself to work a lot,” she said. The Gogo, who is widowed, said she never bothers her children with anything like seeking financial help as she self reliant “When I’m sick yes they have to look after me, but if I’m in good health I work for myself,” she said.

Residents fed up with crime

rime has become so bad in Dunoon that residents can`t take it anymore.

On Saturday, March 18, about 150 irate residents took to the streets and bust four suspected thugs in their back yard shacks.

Residents interrogated the suspected thugs, questioning them what they did to eke out a living, to which the thugs did not reply.

Earlier the same day, three residents who were on their way to work were ambushed and robbed. This angered residents who said enough is enough saying some residents are aware of the thugs committing crime in the area but did nothing to report to

the community and or authorities. The suspected thugs landlord, Sisi Nombuso was very excited when the residents bust the four suspected thugs renting space in her RDP house backyard.“I have been telling them to get out of my yard but they they do not want…thank you for coming..I dont want them in my yard. Take them now,” said Nombuso.Zola Bisholo said Dunoon has become dangerous to live. “I wish we could make Dunoon safe, it is dangerous here,” said Bisholo. Residents were urged to report their kids to community leaders if they suspected them of getting involved in criminal activities.

t the dawn of democracy in Mzansi, Gugulethu, resident mama Nosipho Mcate (52) started her second hand clothes business.

Mcate has 22 years’ experience in selling second hand clothes, and she has a story to tell about her business exploits.

“I managed to send my three children to school because of this business and today I can still look after myself,” she said. Mcate said she started by selling lunch tins but she decided to change and ventured in second hand clothes business. “These clothes help my kasi very much. Lunch tins didn’t pay me very well at the same time they didn’t give a meaningful contribution to my community,” said Mcate. She said even though the profit is small, she feels good when every person in kasi is dressed up. “Nobody will ever walk

naked as long as my business exists. I sell clothes from R15 and none of my clothes goes beyond R50,” she said.Mcate said she sometimes compromise and accept even R10 only because she wants to help other people. She works seven days a week and she admitted that things are no longer the same.

“We used to have a huge space to spread our clothes but now things have changed.

Our places are getting smaller and smaller everyday as the City Council wants to increase a number of people who pay tax.

She showed Ilisolbantu small square metre box she said was her designated space to operate her business.“The other bad thing is that Chinese shops are taking business away from us. It’s getting tough every day. I can’t even buy a tent to cover myself during rainy season and even the summer sun,” she said.

New round of evictions in Wolwerivier

esidents say they live in overcrowded conditions while houses stand empty. A number of people (members of the community say more than 20 families) were evicted by City of Cape Town law enforcement officers from houses in Wolwerivier, on Thursday, March.

Warning notices were placed on the houses stating that these were “Emergency Housing Units” only to be occupied by “approved beneficiaries”.

After belongings were removed, padlocks were put on the doors. Residents complained that their belongings and electronic goods were damaged. As soon as law enforcement officers left, the locks were broken and residents started carrying their furniture back in.

Residents claim that this is not the first time this has happened. Magdalene Minnaar, a community leader, said there was a lot of overcrowding in Wolwerivier: “The houses are really too small, and they have no privacy. There was no need for this [eviction].” One of the people evicted, Morne Goodman, said he had been living in the house with his son and a friend for six months.

According to Goodman, law enforcement officers broke the windows the last time he was evicted from the same house.

Goodman said that although he had lived in the Wolwerivier area for 32 years, he did not get a house. “That is my right, to get a house, because I was born here,” he said. Jackson Mgudlwa, a resident since 2015, said that left unoccupied, the vacant houses were vandalised, broken into, and the aluminium windows and the doors stolen. He also claimed the empty houses could be used by criminals. This is why Wolwerivier residents with no place to stay should move in, he said.

Councilor Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Informal Settlements, said that there were 30 vacant units and they were earmarked for emergency housing. Limberg said it appeared that “almost half of the illegal occupants already have a unit in the City-owned Wolwerivier development”.

“It cannot be, with the housing need, that some are occupying two units, while others wait for an opportunity.

The City urges the illegal occupants in the other units to vacate immediately,” said Limberg.

t least 38 people including mothers and children were on Saturday, March 25, left destitute and homeless after a blaze gutted their shacks in Doornback, Kwa 5 squatter camp opposite Dunoon.

The overnight fire that flared up at 22:27, destroyed 12 shacks. Luckily there were no fatalities but one adult male was treated on the scene after sustaining minor injury to his arm.

Confirming the incident, the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Theo Layne said a stove left unattended was the possible cause of the fire. Mother of

four children, Thobeka Gubuza, 36, said she lost belongings worth R10 000.

Gubuza said she managed to salvage her ID including her children birth certificates. But she was so livid that her children school uniform and school text books went up in flames.

Masithole Mdlodlo, 26, said when the fire started he destroyed his own shack to prevent the fire from spreading further. Unfortunately his belongings were stolen by people who pretended to act in good faith. “I was not so lucky.

Most of my belongings were stolen by people pretending to help,” said Mdlodlo.

Passionate Precious simply loves UPrecious modeling! uphuphuma P uthando! assion is the drive that can push us to achieve our dreams.

As for Precious Madubela (17) from Khayelitsha the love for modelling has been in her heart since she was only 12 years old! Last year she founded a modelling agency calledJourney Before Success that teaches kasi young girls about how they should carry themselves in a confident manner.

“My dream is to see young kasi girls growing into confident adults who know their worth. As an agency it’s not about entertaining people on stage alone but we venture into various programs such as teenage pregnancy awareness,” she said. Precious told Ilisolabantu that she has been attending a modelling school in Brackenfell in order to take her passion to another level. She said, together with a friend Zimkitha Galela the founder of Miss Dream Fighter, they hosted a Miss Independent 2017

on February 17. Precious and some of her models went to the streets of Khayelitsha to wash cars so that they can raise the money for the event. “We don’t have any sponsorship so we have to find our own way to make the dream come true,” she said. They recently have a ‘Bikini car washing day’ where models wear bikini’s as they wash cars.

She told Ilisolabantu that they didn’t make a lot of money on the day as they charged R35 per car and washed only seven cars. “Women have to be independent and be able to stand on their own.

We mentor young people and teach them on how to build confidence and be independent woman who can stand for themselves,” Precious said her agency has over 100 models aged between 16 to 21 years-old. She said they focus on women only because they are vulnerable to abuse if they are not independent.

Using basketball to keep kids off Dunoon`s streets

eeping kids from indulging in immoral and destructive behaviour is a daily struggle.

Sports can teach teamwork sacrifice, and dedication.

“You know basketball is an American sport and bringing it here in kasi is a tough task, but the kids I train now understand the importance and most of them are enjoying the game,” he said.

For this reason, Farm Malinga, has introduced basket ball to Dunoon youth. Malinga is teaching Dunoon kids how to play basketball. Every day, the kids train at the basketball court adjacent to Inkwenkwezi Secondary School. He said before the start of each training session, kids were reminded to work on their school home work after training were schooled about the dangers of getting involved in drugs. The kids turn up is not encouraging, but Malinga says he is not going to give up. “I have been playing basketball from the age of 16. I have passion for the game and I would like to impart the knowledge to Dunoon kids. I want to keep them busy so that they do not get involved in crime” said Malinga. He says he has approached local schools in the area to inform pupils about his basketball training sessions.

Though not properly equipped Malinga is happy to use what comes in handy.“I start training at 5pm every day until 7pm and I accommodate different age groups.

Having played for Transnet foundation and Love life Malinga’s love for the game started back in the days when kwaito music and hip hop were vying for space.

‘You know back in the day there was so much influence from the music. We used to listen to hip hop and you know it goes together with basket. He also said he was looking for sponsors to fund the sport and his big dream is to have a basketball academy in Dunoon.

or the next seven weeks, 200 learners from ten primary schools will have the opportunity to expand their soccer skills; play in league matches and also received valuable weekly life-skills training from dedicated mentors and coaches.

It’s seven weeks of fun and the ultimate reward, the opportunity to become a player mascot at an official PSL soccer match at the end of the Spur Masidlale Soccer league matches. Each week teams will come together at the NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu, Cape Town to show their talents and develop skills that might otherwise have been left only to chance.

Spur Steak Ranches saw the need to develop soccer and life skills amongst young South Africans from previously disadvantaged areas. Since the launch of the Spur Masidlale Soccer programme in 2005, the programme has touched

the lives of over 30 000 boys and girls within communities across South Africa.

The league started off with annual soccer clinics and became a seven-week programme whereby boys and girls aged 10-12 years enjoy weekly league games ending in regional finals.The Cape Town launch of the programme took place on Wednesday 15 March 2017 at the NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu and saw the teams welcomed by former Orlando Pirates player, Thabo Mngomeni.His words of encouragement are just the start of the positivity the progamme will aim to plant in the minds and hearts of these future stars. “What Spur is doing for the community is helping these kids achieve their hopes and dreams and opens the opportunity of a bright future.
