Sinenjongo High shines again Top learner gets 7 distinctions ISOLABANTU Sinenjongo High School’s Avile Msongelo, got seven distinctions in her 2017 matric results.

The 17-year-old who lives with her mother in a bachelor flat in Rugby, Milnerton, is one of the top three matric achievers at the school, which achieved an 86% pass rate.

The other top achiever is Mahle Ntloko, from the Kwa 5 informal settlement, opposite Dunoon. Ntloko got four distinctions.

The school, which is situated in Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton, has increased its pass rate by 1%, going beyond the 2016 result where the school achieved an excellent 85 %.

School principal, Khuselwa Nopote, said that 34 of its learners achieved bachelor passes‚ 52 got diploma passes‚ and 27 achieved higher certificate passes.

Nopote said the secret of her school’s success was hard work.

“Most of our learners come from disadvantaged families.

Our entire staff is supportive of that. We lead by example: We have strict rules and punctuality is very important to us,” said Nopote.

Msongelo said that she honestly did not know how she had

managed to achieve seven distinctions.

“I studied hard, that is all. I was shocked when the results were released and found that I had gotten seven distinctions. I was hoping that I’d get distinctions but did not expect to get seven of them! I cried. I was excited and shocked at the same time,” said Msongelo.

She said that she stayed at school after classes and studied up until 9pm and only then took a taxi home.

“I preferred studying at school because at home it was a challenge as we live in a bachelor flat, sharing with my litter sister, and my mother,” she said.

Msongelo is registered to study actuarial sciences at Wits University.

Mahle, who spent R120 a week on taxi fare to go to and back from school, said that she did not experience a lot of challenges in her matric.

The secret of her success, she said, was hard work and refraining from shebeens and boyfriends.

“I stayed out of trouble. I went to church and I didn’t have a boyfriend to distract me from my studies. My goal was to take my parents out of these bad living conditions in Kwa 5 and I want to buy them a car as well,” said Mahle.

She said that she has also been accepted at Wits University but did not have a bursary for accommodation.

“For me matric was not really hard. It just requires a lot of hard work and determination.

I just want to wish the class of 2018 good luck,” she said.

Msongelo said that the 2018 class must start studying as early as possible and not wait until the last minute.

Her mother, Nomonde, said that she was very happy for her daughter’s success.

“I hope that someday when she has completed her university studies she will take us out of this bad place, and buy us a decent house, in a white area,”

said Nomonde.

Nopote said the 2018 matrics, should ensure that they are committed from the very beginning of the year, all the way through to the end.

“They must start studying and preparing now for their final exams. Working hard pays at the end of the day,” she said.

Isolabantu News attempted to get the 2017 matric results from Inkwenkwezi Secondary School to no avail as the principal indicated that he was busy.

Further attempts to conduct telephone interviews also proved futile as a receptionist told Isolabantu News that the principal was in a meeting and later said the school had achieved a whopping 92 % pass rate.

Isolabantu News was unable

to get the contacts and names of the top achievers at Inkwenkwezi Secondary, making it impossible to highlight their success.

On Thursday, 11 January, the Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, and Education MEC, Debbie Schafer, hosted the province’s top matric achievers at the annual Premier’s matric awards ceremony, held at Zille’s official Leeuwenhof residence in Cape Town.

Speaking at the ceremony, Schafer said that she was pleased that the Western Cape had again achieved the highest percentage of bachelor’s passes in the country, with 39.1% of learners achieving this quality pass.

She said that in Mathematics, the Western Cape achieved the highest pass rate of 73.9% and also achieved 73.0% in Physical Sciences.

“More learners in the Western Cape are taking maths and science as a percentage of the cohort, something that we have been encouraging over a number of years. While the overall cohort in the Western Cape was 2000 learners, smaller than in 2016, the number of learners taking maths and science had only decreased by 703 and 329, respectively.

Congratulations must go to all of our 8 Education Districts with each, once again, achieving a pass rate of over 80%,” said Schafer.

Men lay charges of assault after being pepper-sprayed, punched and beaten FROM PAGE 1

As he turned into Waxberry Street on his way to his home in New Rest informal settlement, a marked police van behind him sped past, and then blocked his way. Suddenly, says Jezile, a police officer leaned out of the car window and pepper-sprayed him in the face, without saying a word. Then the police van drove off.

Jezile left his car in the street and went to a nearby shack to ask for water to rinse his eyes.

The owner of the shack, Esethu Mnqathe, 27, witnessed the incident.

Mnqathe said that Jezile asked him for a lift to the Dunoon Community Health Centre to seek medical attention, and then to the Milnerton Police station, to open a case of assault.

Instead, Mnqathe asked Jezile if he had the police’s van registration number. When Jezile said he did not, Mnqathe suggested that they find the police van, and take pictures.

They checked the pictures and then Mnqathe started reversing the car, as the gravel road leading to the new New Rest informal settlement is too narrow for a three-point turn.

The police van followed and then blocked their way. Then

the showdown began.

Jezile said the cops went straight to him, peppersprayed him in the face again, pulled him out of the car and started punching, kicking, and stamping on him.

When Mnqathe asked what crime Jezile had committed, the cops attacked him as well, pepper-sprayed him, and slapped him in the face.

Meanwhile two more police

White Parklands resident accused of shooting black man in race attack A white Parklands resident appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 16 January, charged with assault following the shooting of a black man with a pellet gun in October 2016.

The case was postponed to next month.

Magistrate Alfreda Lewis read out the charge to Sydney Hillman, 53, who said he would be represented by legal aid lawyers.

Dressed in a longsleeved white shirt with black stripes and dark grey jeans with cowboy boots, Hillman chatted to a person sitting next to him in the public gallery and often broke into laughter.

The court appearance follows the shooting with a pellet gun of Luvuyo Popo, 34, on October 19 2016.

Popo, who lives in Dunoon’s New Rest informal settlement, told GroundUp he had spent three weeks at Cape Town’s Somerset Hospital. The pellet was still

stuck in his body, he said, and doctors had told him it could not safely be removed.

According to hospital documents seen by GroundUp, he was shot in the left scapula and the pellet bullet is in the thoracic cavity.

Popo said that he was pushing a trolley loaded with planks of wood and discarded and soiled carpets which he was collecting from construction sites in the Parklands area. He intended to use them to revamp his shack.

He said a white man standing on the balcony of his double storey house in Nottingham Close, shouted at him to “Go back where you come from I don’t need k****rs in my street.”

He said he had kept on pushing his trolley and was collecting a discarded wooden door from a neighbour when he felt something burning in his shoulder. He had fallen to the ground and another resident of the street had come to help him and

had called the police and an ambulance. The man who shot him had ridden his motorbike up to the scene and started laughing while at the same time hurling racial slurs at him, Popo said.

He said the bullet had damaged his arm and he could no longer do temporary gardening jobs as he had done before.

He had upgraded his shack to a four-room double-storey shack and rented out the other rooms to make ends meet.

Hillman left the court before GroundUp was able to interview him.

The case will be heard on 2 February.

All four cops then joined in the punching of Jezile and Mnqathe, then pushed them into the back of a police van and pepper-sprayed the inside of the van before locking it.

At the Milnerton police station, Jezile said that several police officers were standing outside waiting.

He said that he and Mnqathe were dragged out of the van and into the police station.

At the police station the beating, punching, and kicking continued, he said.

He showed GroundUp marks he said were sustained from the assault.

Both men were detained in the Milnerton police holding cells overnight and were released on Tuesday, 9 January, after paying R500 police bail.

On Jezile’s bail form, seen by GroundUp, the police indicated that Jezile’s offence was assault, and defeating the ends of justice.

His case was to be heard in the Cape Town Magistrates’ court on Wednesday, 10 January. But the case never saw the light of day. The bail form which describes the charge, and the amount paid, had written on it: “nolle prosequi”, a

Latin phrase which means “we shall no longer prosecute”. It was stamped with the court’s stamp.

“When I see the cops’ flashing blue light or hear their wailing sirens I feel angry and scared. I want justice to take its course,” said Jezile.

Mnqathe said that he had been left humiliated and his reputation had been destroyed.

“My dignity is finished. My neighbours don’t respect us after they saw the police beating us and shoving us into their van. They don’t know we did nothing wrong. I now have hatred for the police,” he said.

GroundUp sought comment from the Milnerton police station. The station’s acting spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, said: “This office can confirm that a case has been registered. The complainant’s case was sent to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.

The investigation is under judicial consideration and therefore prohibited from public discussion (sub judice).”

The police also refused to provide GroundUp with the names of the officers involved.

De Lille said teams were

working around the clock to deliver the emergency plan for desalination, groundwater and water reuse.

“But, as I have already said, this alone will simply not be enough to avoid Day Zero without savings from all residents,” said.

She said this is the moment where Cape Town can bring about the fundamental behav-

iour change that is needed to save all from running out of water.

“The time to act for everyone’s sake is now. So if we reduce the demand enough now, we can still get our water delivered to our houses and not have to queue daily for our allocation,” she said.

Happiness and frustration on first day of school Scores of delighted parents in Dunoon took their children to school for the first time on Wednesday, 17 January, 2018.

As is usually the case, the first day of every new school year is bittersweet; there were lots of happy smiles at Dunoon’s Sophakama Primary School as the newly registered learners turned up for their first day of the 2018 school year.

Parents were seen displaying emotional reactions as compared to their children.

But for some parents, it was a sad day as they did not register their children the year before, and now wanted to register on the first day and so were turned away.

All three primary schools in Dunoon: Sophakama Primary, Dunoon, and Silverleaf, indicated that they were full to capacity; meaning that some children were unable to start school on the first day of the 2018 school year.

Sophakama Primary School principal, Sabelo Makubalo, said that about 20 children had been turned away as the school is full to capacity.

Makubalo said the children have now been added to the waiting list.

But, he said that he was excited that his school had reached the target for the amount of children now enrolled.

Makubalo further said that he hoped the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) would be able to work out a plan for the children that had been turned away, as well as, for those that are on the waiting list.

“The first day was busy. We were not expecting so much overcrowding by parents but we did our planning and preparations on time. We have a lot of parents who want to enrol their children but we just don’t have space to accommodate them at present,” said

Makubalo, adding that a lot of parents thought that children are enrolled on the first day of school, when it is actually done, the year before.

He said his school was the most preferred school in the township because of its teaching standards.

“Sophakama is always the preferred school for most parents because of its standard of teaching and learning, as well as its beauty,” he said.

He said that the school is supposed to have 1200 pupils, from Grade R to Grade 7, but it actually had 1500 pupils and they have had to employ additional teachers.

“Each class has around 42 pupils. The WCED expects us to have 38 pupils per class,” he said.

Communities help protect schools to fight vandalism Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Minister of Education is concerned that vandalism continues in schools across the province despite increased security at identified high risk schools.

Over the December holiday period, a total of 32 incidents were reported by schools across the province, which is up from 21 incidents reported during the same period in 2016, Schäfer said.

Two of the 32 incidents are classified as major and an incident is classified as minor if the estimated cost of repairs is below R100 000 and the school’s ability to function is not affected in any way.

The two incidents that were reported as “major” were in the Metro South District and Metro North District.

In the Metro South, the school’s workshop was targeted with vandals gaining access through the roof.

Schäfer said though the school had an alarm system and holiday security at work various electronic tools, cutting machines and gas canisters were stolen.

The incident is still under investigation.

In the Metro North, two

prefab classrooms were destroyed after thieves gutted two of the buildings, stealing cabling, lights and intercom speakers. The tower that provides wifi to the community was stollen while the alarm system which is linked to the South African Police Service was triggered the police however, did not respond.

The estimated cost of damages thus far has come in at around R600 000 with only half of the estimates having been calculated. It is unfortunate that we have to spend such a large amount of money on repair work at schools as a result of burglary and vandalism.

We should be using these funds to build new schools, improve existing schools and generally improve opportunities for children.

The “minor” incidents reported included theft of copper pipes, electrical cabling, computer equipment and school stationery.

At a school in the Metro East Education District, a school’s feeding kitchen was targeted with perpetrators stealing the gas stove, 2 gas bottles, solar panels, nonperishable food and the alu-

minium window frames. They also turned the water on that ran continuously after the break in. It is simply deplorable to steal food out of the mouths of our learners. It is also completely irresponsible to damage water infrastructure, especially in the current drought.

In some incidents, perpetrators targeted schools simply to destroy property and left without stealing anything.

This is shocking and completely unacceptable.

Damage to classrooms, school halls and computer labs included theft of and damage to light fittings, windows and sporting equipment.

School vandalism not only comes at a cost to the Education Department but to the learners and the community too.

While we can and do try to safeguard our schools with additional security measures, we cannot win the fight against school burglary and vandalism without community support as schools, given their extensive physical infrastructure, are very difficult areas to secure.

A school is a community

asset. Everyone should help protect schools as it is fundamental to the future of our children.

Our Safe Schools Directorate is very active in mobilising communities to look after schools, in conjunction with the police and community-based organisations.

The co-operation of the community and the SAPS is essential in order to combat vandalism and to create a safe school environment that promotes

teaching and learning. We urge community members to be extra vigilant throughout the year and to immediately report any suspicious behaviour or activities that occur within the vicinity of their schools. I would also like to thank the many communities who have taken this seriously and helped us to protect our schools.

Pioneer Soccer Club triumphed in 2017

DAVID ROSSOUW Pioneer Soccer Club has ended the 2017 soccer season on a spectacular note by awarding junior and senior players for outstanding performances during the soccer season.

The annual awards ceremony took place at 130 Thandabantu Street, where players received their awards, and trophies.

Club chairman, Steven Manyokole, paid tribute to the management and players for their outstanding work during the season, and also, for their hard work and contribution to the club.

“Without our supporters and sponsors we would not achieve our dreams,” he said. “We feel proud of our achievements during 2017 and we hope that 2018 will be a greater year

for the Pioneer Soccer Club.

Although we could not win the Du Noon LFA league, we showed that we can compete against the best football teams in our league as well as in the region, and that is what is important to us,” said Manyokole.

Out of 512 teams in SAFA Cape Town, Manyokole said that his club had finished “thirty second” in the Coca Cola Cup for amateurs, and subsequent-

ly, emerging as the winners of the Dunoon Local Football Association (DLFA) top 8 competition. The club also managed to become winners of the Spring tournament and took a 3rd position in the annual ANC ward 104 councillor tournament as well.

“I hope this awards presentation motivates and encourages those players who did not receive any awards, to do better

next year,” said the chairman.

He also thanked the LFA for their support, and “for making it possible for there to be proper playing fields available on match days,” said Thozamile Ntakana, who is DLFA secretary.

He also said that the 2018 football season will be challenging for all LFA’s in the Western Cape due to the water restrictions and drought.
