Students desperate as bursary scheme money not paid Malmesbury students claim some are resorting to sex work to make ends meet. PETER LUHANGA ILISO LABANTU A number of students attending West Coast College in Malmesbury say they have no money for food, hygiene products, or accommodation, with some resorting to sex work because they have not received their bursary scheme allowances. Students at the TVET college spoke to Iliso Labantu on condition of anonymity as they feared disciplinary action from the college. Some female students say the inability to afford hygiene products means they have to skip classes when they menstruate. The lack of funds leads to some also missing classes because they don’t have food or need to try find money to pay for private accommodation and avoid eviction by landlords. Some female students
told Iliso Labantu they have resorted to sex work as they are in such desperate need of money. They claim their education is being disrupted due to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) not paying their allowances. As a result, students embarked on a protest on Thursday 27 February and demanded clarity on their NSFAS allowances from the college administration. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), details for awarding the subsidised allowances are recommended for consideration by TVET College Financial Aid Committee’s (FINAID).
