Community Lifestyle December 2016

1 - Cypress Lakes

From Cypress Lakes’ General Manager

All new residents of Cypress Lakes are required to complete an application for residency. Approval, by Management, will be necessary for anyone, including renters that will occupy a home in Cypress Lakes for 30 days or more. Details of this process are available at the Administration office. Please be considerate of your fellow residents by not bringing pet animals into the Clubhouse. Service animals are the exception. As a reminder to all residents, please notify the gate house of any service people (as well as guests) that will be coming to your home. This will assure that they will be allowed into the community with minimal delay. With the year-end upon us we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our residents for all the things you do to keep our community and golf courses beautiful and safe for all to enjoy. Keeping garbage in appropriate areas The 90 degree rule on the golf course Not littering the golf course & community Disposing of cigarette buts correctly, not on the ground Being friendly to neighbors, employees & guests of the community Parking in designated areas Helping neighbors when you can Keeping pets on a leash at all times and picking up after them Instructing guests of the community and golf course rules and regulations Obeying the 15-mph speed limit & Stop signs Supporting the staff We have had a very successful year of operations this year through a joint effort of staff and volunteers. The Cypress Lakes Homeowners Association, the CLHA committees and our staff will continue to work towards our common goal“Make Cypress Lakes a Better Community”. On behalf of all the associates of Cypress Lakes and Big Cypress Golf Club, we wish you and yours a safe, healthy and happy holiday season. Happy New Year! Mitch Krach, CCM, CCE Cypress Lakes Homeowners Association News (CLHA) The annual meeting and election will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the main hall. Doors will open for check in at 6:00 PM and the meeting will begin at 7:00PM. There are some significant changes that have been made this year due to changes in FL statute 723 pertaining to proxies and the election of directors. 1. The proxies sent out to each member can only be used for the quorum count for the annual meeting. They can not be used to have someone vote for you in your absence. However, it is still very important for you to sign and return the proxy if you are unable to attend the meeting. 2. Nominations from the floor will no longer be taken at the annual meeting. Nominations from the floor will be taken at the December 12, 2016 monthly board meeting. At that point all nominations will be closed to candidates interested in running for a seat on the board. This change has been made because we must have an absentee ballot available, upon request, to those members not able to attend the meeting. 3. The nominations committee, Lee Furlong, Barbara Hall, and Darrell Beardsley will prepare the absentee ballot and announce how, when and where they can be obtained. If a member obtains an absentee ballot it will be their official ballot and another ballot will not be issued. Keep in mind that there is one ballot issued per household. I urge any member of CLHA interested in running for the board and making a difference in their community to get their application for candidacy in to the nominations committee. On behalf of the CLHA board we wish you all a very safe and happy holiday season. Carol Holzschuh, CLHA President

Cypress Lakes Homeowners Association News (CLHA) I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. We are now into full swing again with lots of fun events planned in our community. Before we know it, January will be here and the Homeowners’ Association will be hosting the annual meeting and voting. Memberships won’t be available to renew that night, so please plan on renewing your membership as soon as possible before December 31st. Without a current membership, you won’t be able to vote. We have 3 open seats on the board. By now you would have received notification on the annual meeting with a reminder when your membership expires. For those memberships expiring at the end of the year, please do renew. We are counting on dues to continue working on our community special projects, helping our community groups grow, sponsoring our volunteer dinner nights and to be able to continue donating to our charitable organizations that need our support. Even if you reside here only part of the year, everyone benefits! Please support your community. The cost is so reasonable; one year is $15.00; three years for only $35.00. Elaine Ciesla CLHA Membership Chairperson

Elections for three positions on our Board, Vice President, Secretary and Correspondence, will be conducted at this meeting - please give thoughtful consideration to stepping up and offering your talents and time to our organization - going forward depends on each of us doing our part! Contact Michele Wilson to be added to the ballot. Also at this meeting a special guest speaker, Morgan McGowan, from Athena House will share information about this valuable resource for our lessfortunate women veterans. Mid-December we will be providing a Christmas treat for the guests at Talbot House by providing Christmas cookies at their dinner service on December 10th. ASSOCIATIONS Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) We had ten members attend the Annual CERT luncheon meeting at Traditions at Ruby Lake on Saturday, November 5th. Issy Lutjens, along with other members, received an award as CERT team members of the year. The luncheon was also a celebration of Nancy Gutierrez’s retirement. The CERT team has joined the Polk Medical Reserve Corp. to participate in ongoing training programs offered by the Corp. We look forward to working with them. Several of the team have recently completed the current CPR training. The Cert program is still in need of towels, sheets, bandages, arm slings and will accept your donations. Bob will be conducting a radio training on December 12 at the North Club House. The team will be preparing for a Disaster Activation Drill which is to take place in March of 2017. Community members are invited to attend a monthly meeting to see what it is the CERT team does and perhaps become a member. There will be no monthly meeting for December.

Citizen’s Assisted Patrol (CAP)

CERT Training

Citizen’s Assisted Patrol provides extra ‘eyes and ears’ for the Polk County Sheriff in our community. Our volunteers continue their rounds with patrol carts and car. But it takes all of you during this holiday season to be aware of strangers in our neighborhood with families and friends visiting! Those extra people provide additional distractions for you as a driver, unpredictable movements with children on bikes and just generally more congestion in and around the clubhouse area and through out the community. For these and many good reasons, only licensed drivers are permitted to operate golf carts. All drivers should stop completely at the stop signs. Who hasn’t had a bike come whizzing around a corner into your path? Don’t let an accident happen that could easily be prevented by your caution and attentiveness! Merry Christmas and please be safe out there! There is no CAP meeting this month. Next meeting Tuesday, January 9 at 10 am, Cypress Rm.

Cypress Lakes Masons The Cypress Lakes Masons will meet on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 At 8:00 AM. Coffee and donuts will be available. We will not be going out to dinner since our Annual dinner is at the Club House on December 12, 2016 at 5:00 PM. Reservations are due December 1st.

Federation of Manufactured Home Owners (FMO) November17th the FMO held a training certification class for home owner board associates. Five members of our board were required to attend this course (by FS 723), as well as any new members of the board. It was designed to educate us in the importance and the information contained in the FS 723. For those of us that don’t know what the FS 723 is, it is the Florida Statute that governs manufactured home communities, specifically lot renters. Within this Statute are the laws that protect us as manufactured home owners. There are laws governing HOAs, landlord rules and regulations concerning rent increases and pass through to name just a few. If you would like a copy of Chapter 723, Florida Statutes, just contact the Division at 850-488-1122. It will be mailed to you free of charge. This is another reason for you to support the FMO. Classes like this are held and sponsored by the FMO to keep board members apprised of changes in FS 723. Information concerning FS 723 are addressed in the FMO newsletter, which is free to you as a member of FMO. The rules for landlords in the FS 723 were primarily suggested by and corrected by lobbyist for the FMO. The FMO represents us in Tallahassee prior to and when the Legislature is in session, working closely with your representatives. Applications for membership are in the Oak Room or you may join at If you have any questions, please contact me at 816-8917. Lee Furlong, Representative 816-8917 or email,

CLHA GENERAL MEETING & ELECTION There are currently three positions available on the Homeowners Board of Directors. Make your voice heard! It’s a perfect opportunity to serve your community. Your help will be welcomed and appreciated. Applications are in the Oak Room and must be submitted no later than the next board meeting on December 12th. Cypress Lakes’ Annual

Cart Caravan of Homes Kicks off Wednesday, January 4 at 9 a.m.

We will host this “open house” style event via golf carts every Wednesday through April. The typical caravan lasts 1 hour. If you have your home listed for sale with our office, or you are considering listing your home, we do include all of our home listings in this open house event; rotating 5 different homes each week. On average, we attract 45 attendants weekly, some of whom are looking to buy for themselves, and some who are looking at homes for their family/friends who live out of the area. Best part: hot cocoa and cookies! Not only is the event fun, but it’s valuable, too. We gather feedback from our attendees on the homes we have for sale, which is then shared with the sellers. If you have questions about this event, or about listing your home for sale in time for this event, stop by the Sales & Info Center or just give us a call: 859-1431.

TEAM TALK | See what our HCs are saying ...

A Note from Patty Lunski

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that I’m the new Housing Consultant (HC) at Cypress Lakes. John and I moved here June 15, but it feels like we’ve been here most of our lives! When I say we’ve been welcomed with open arms, we really mean it. The people here are so genuinely friendly and caring. We’ve made so many friends in the short five months we’ve been here. I am so excited to be able to share our experience with others who are considering purchasing a home here. Thank you all for the warm welcome, both as a resident and as the newest HC!

RESIDENT RELAY | See what our Residents are saying ... My husband and I have listed two homes here at Cypress Lakes on two different occasions with the Cypress Lakes Sales Team—Both times they did a super job at marketing our homes, and both homes "SOLD" in record time! Amy, and the entire Cypress Lakes Sales Team, were very professional and was extremely helpful throughout the entire process. -Carol D.

Garden Club

Garden Club Annual Plant Sale: The Cypress Lakes Garden Clubs Annual Plant sale and big fundraiser for the year was a big success. Plant sales were brisk from the moment the flowers and hanging baskets arrived until the last moment of the sale. This year’s selection of hanging baskets of petunias and begonias were full, lush and beautiful. Our flats of flowers from ornamental cabbages, salvia, pansies, etc. were a stunning array of color. The big deep red geraniums sold at a quick pace and our herbs made our plant sale complete. On behalf of the Garden Club we want to thank all who purchased plants from our sale. Every sale – whether it was one individual annual or many flats and baskets – enables us to use the proceeds to continue to beautify Cypress Lakes. Garden Club Holiday Meeting: On Wednesday, December 21, 2016, the Cypress Lakes Garden Club Members Only Annual Holiday Party begins at 3:00 pm in the Cypress Room. Bring a favorite snack, dessert or entrée to share. Please join us for this festive occasion. Any Questions call: Maddy Gaynor 414-855-0302 or

Garden Clippings

What to do in the garden in December. There’s always something to be done in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying or sowing. Time to plant daffodil bulbs and other spring flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next years display. Plant spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and primulas, hyacinth bulbs for display next spring. Start to plant bare-root roses—they can be planted any time between now and March, heathers, grasses and trailing ivy in pots for winter color. Now is the ideal time to plant a magnolia tree for a beautiful spring display. Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. Cut back the yellowing foliage of perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigor. Lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing. Now is a good time to root prune trees and shrubs that you plan to move in February. Christmas and Poinsettias go together, so when you go out to buy them look for green foliage to the soil line and the showy part (which most people call flowers, but are not flowers at all) are called bracts, should be large enough to extend beyond the lower green foliage and should be brightly colored. Veggies to plant—beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, collards, lettuce, onions, peas, radishes, spinach. Doggy Park News

What a beautiful day Sunday was for our Halloween Dog Park Contest. We had 26 small dogs entered and 4 large dogs. First place went to Ron with Riley, second place to Larry with Beau, third place to Melody with Maggie Mae and fourth to Betty with Ollie. First place in our large dogs went to Janet with Dakota and second place to Elaine with Penny. All the dogs were dressed great, I am sure our judges had a hard time selecting just 6. Thanks again to Ray and Anne for setting up, Lin for baking the dog treats and cupcakes, Elaine and Melody for their cupcakes, and Marie for being our MC and for everyone who was there for making it a wonderful day! Cindy Riesett 706-818-0012 Memorial Bricks If you have walked through the Garden Walk, I am sure you have noticed the memorial bricks. There are still several blank bricks. For $50 you can purchase a brick to commemorate an important event in your life, to remember someone dear to you or just to support the Garden Club. Funds from the sale of the bricks go to help maintain the Garden Walk. Karen Hamilton (863) 853-9678

Grief and the Holidays: After a significant loss in your life, the holiday season can seem and be overwhelming. Here are some ideas that may help you be proactive about this season. 1). Let God into your heart. Ask Him to show you what you need to do day by day. Pray for His comfort and guidance throughout these days. 2). Lean into your feelings. It is fine to feel sad and uncomfortable. Just allow the feelings to be and know that it is normal. 3). Do as much as you can handle. You are not required to do all of the things that you did before your loved one died. Do just what feels right to you for this time. People will understand. 4). Change it up or not. You may decide to do the holidays in a different way. Go to a new place, fix a different meal, time things differently. Some may wish to keep things exactly the same and honor your loved one in some way. Whichever way you go don't be afraid to talk about your loved one and memories that you have. 5). Do not be afraid of the emotion. It will be there no matter what! Remember God loves YOU! Granny’s Attic Granny’s Attic has grown over the years to include many things you may need for visiting grands and great-grands! Booster seats, high chairs, pac-n-play units, car seats and strollers are some of the items we have been able to offer due to the generosity of other residents who had no use for these items as the babies grew (and no place to keep them)! As you can imagine, family holiday vacations were high-use times and with that comes normal wear and tear, as well as, expiration dates on many baby items because of increased safety regulations! We’ve had to pare the selection as items are returned with torn or missing straps, snaps that no longer worked, wheels that didn’t turn, etc. As the inventory of items has shrunk, we are no longer taking reservations for them. Availability is on a first come, first serve basis only. Plan ahead for the visits of those precious children and prepare accordingly if items you want are not in stock for use. We want to continue to provide clean, reliable and safe equipment so call the Activities Office at 859-2136 to see if we can accommodate your needs!

December 2016 Golf Shop News Season Kickoff Golf and Party 2016-17 is off and running. Our Season Kickoff event started with Brad Denton’s fantastic trick shot show. Wouldn’t you like to hit a putter that far? Straight? The Team Stableford was a little bit of luck but did help if you played well. In the end, Mark Lessard, Jan Hartman, Mary Hawn & Bob Horton led the way with 155 points with balanced scoring throughout the team. Closest to the pin winners took home our new Bridgestone golf balls as prizes. Welcome back to our Seasonal golfers and let’s have a great season. “Best Y ear Ever”

Night Golf is a BLAST!!! Let’s do it again!! We’re going to play ten holes this time. Friday December 2nd 6:30 Shotgun Round One Winners: Front Nine: Steve Davis Earl Kintz Peter McAllister 14

Back Nine: Pete Gregorich Arnold Munchalfen Gene Coffman & Tom McGorty 16

December Guys & Dolls With our annual match play event starting this month, let’s play a team match. Pick your own opponent, use your dots and play a Better Ball match against the other couple. Then watch those gimmee putts get really short. Prizes by matches and overall low Better Ball Net. Sunday December 18th with an 8:30 Shotgun.

Friendly Reminders:    

We play in less than 4 hours. Practice ready golf to make the game more enjoyable for all. We start shotguns with the goal of having “balls in the air” at the noted time, usually 8:30. To get weekly updates on golf activities, get on our e mail list by registering in the golf shop. Golf Shop tournament winnings must be used by the end of the year. You won! Now select your prize.

Swing Tip of the Month Your full swing is fine. Make your new goal to improve chipping, pitching, distance control and trajectory. Focus on the short game and the long game will follow. Fix the short game and lower your handicap.

Saturday morning Swing Tips December Swing tips are scheduled for the 10th and 24th. Sign up in Golf Shop for your 15 minute quick tip and Change your Game! Scott Yates, PGA

December Golf Association News North Stars

November 2nd was our Opening Day for our Fall season. We had our first Member-Guest tournament on November 16th. This season promises to be one of the best seasons yet. December is a busy month with our Christmas Scramble and Luncheon on the 21st. Please look for the signup sheets on the bulletin board. As you may know our major fund raiser of the year is our Angel Tree. Last year we raised over $1000. We are looking forward to sponsoring several children again this year. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Congrats to Diane Page who aced #17 in our Member Guest (pictured to the right).

Ladies Golf Association This months big event is our three day Santa Capers. That’s right, three days as we start with the Team Revealing Party on Monday the 12th. Festivities begin at 6pm so don’t be late. The Game starts promptly at 8:30 with our regular Tuesday morning routine and finish this year’s “Capers” with the 12:00 Luncheon on Wednesday the 14th. The Game is a drop out scramble so get those putters warmed up and get ready to go low.

North Men We welcome all the new comers who recently joined the North Course Men’s Association. We are looking forward to the new season with a lot more fun and competition now that our Northern friends are returning. Games for the month will be alternating low net/quota points. Our next hot dog day will be December 8th, rain or shine. Check the North Course Bulletin Board for any new changes that took place while you were gone and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas George Gardner

Swingers The weather is finally cooperating these Saturday mornings and I hope you have been enjoying the games! Don’t forget to check the SWINGERS Bulletin Board in the clubhouse for any updates. We have a “Special Day of Golf” committee as well. Looking forward to that day!! At the time of this writing, I do not know what charity we have chosen this year to donate our Christmas gift to. That will be reported in the January Newsletter. The Swingers decided a few years ago, if the temperature is 44 degrees or less at tee time we would call in to the Golf Shop and meet for lunch at 10:30/11:00 in the Grill. Golf Car Repair and Maintenance Let’s all congratulate our in house golf car mechanic, Eric Alicea. Eric just completed his Club Car mechanic certification course at their plant in Augusta Georgia. Eric is off to a great start here at Big Cypress and he is eager to help with all of our cart repair needs. Eric’s specialty is rebuilding old carts and his newest creation, the “Musical Cart” is available now. If you are ready to upgrade, see Eric and give the “Musical Cart” a test drive. As a reminder, if you need cart service, please call or stop in the Golf Shop to fill out a work order. Eric will then give you a call for a good time to pick up cart. His normal turn around is two days unless parts need to be ordered. Congrats, Eric !
