Cynthia Wiesanjaya was born in Indonesia, lived in Singapore for 5 years, and is currently living in San Francisco to pursue her dream to become an interior designer. Her journey of becoming an Interior Architecture and Design student started at the Academy of Art University in 2014.

Moving and traveling the world since the age of 12 years old has made her an independent person, and exposed her to a variety of architectural styles and cultures. She loves to explore different design styles and color palletes with the incorporation of thoughtful space planning. She continues to push herself to keep learning and improving her skills by exploring, as she believes that there is no end to learning. She aims to create comfortable and aesthetically beautiful spaces where her clients can be happy and satisfied to be at.

CONCEPT

SHORELINE The concept shoreline is inspired from the project location, which the neighborhood is surrounded by shores that are overlooking beautiful views of the ocean and beach.

Shoreline is the boundary where the ocean meets the land. The connection and constant interaction between water and land relates CYNTHIA WIESANJAYA | PORTFOLIO

to National Geographic’s mission and vision to connect nature and people through providing information and educating them.

The two floors will have separate concepts, which the first level will have the main concept of "Underwater", while the second level will have the main concept of "Land".

CAFE

The concept “Underwater is applied abstractly in this space. The cafe acts as the coral reefs/cave, where it is home and nursery for the fishes. Warm tones and suspended wood slat ceiling are used to bring warmth to the space for the people to get cozy and enjoy their meal.

15

PROGRESS SKETCHES

WAITING AREA Curvy flooring transition is used to reflect the concept of shoreline, which also helps to separate different spaces in an open area.

CONFERENCE ROOM

Curvy flooring transition is reflected onto the ceiling of conference room to add interest in the space.

CLIENT

JASON, CHLOE, AND AIMEE

Jason is a single father of his twin daughters, who works as a teacher in school. The twins named Chloe and Aimee are 12 years old, who share the same room.

Chloe excels in school and is active in sports. She plays soccer.

Aimee has a Cerebral Palsy and is visually impaired. She uses a wheelchair everyday.

CONCEPT

jellyfish Jellyfish is a free-swimming aquatic animal that has a dome shaped bell with series of tentacles. It is light, translucent, and sometimes vibrant in colors. Just like jellyfishes, the second level of Mariotto Residence will have movement and rhythm as the main design aspects, in order to create a comfortable and relaxing living environment. Despite the soft look of jellyfishes, they sting when there is a contact. The contrast between the lightness and boldness will CYNTHIA WIESANJAYA | PORTFOLIO

be incorporated into the design by combining soft neutral color scheme with an accent of vibrant colors. This boldness allows clients to live in a comfortable yet fun space that boost their activeness in their daily activities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROGRAM

mariotto residence level 3 The third level of Mariotto Residence is occupied by a three-generations family. Universal Design and ADA compliance is critical in this unit, as the design should meet future needs of Frank. An office space is required to accommodate

CYNTHIA WIESANJAYA | PORTFOLIO

CLIENT

MARIA, FRANK, AND SIMONA

Maria is 45 years old, a single mother that works from home. She has up to three employees that will be coming to her house for work. She also loves to invite guests over to hangout and chill.

Frank is Maria’s father, who is 75 years old. He is getting older and walks with a cane.

Simona is Maria’s daughter, who is 16 years old. She is active in school and loves to play sports. She specifically wants to have a study table and dressing table with mirror in her bedroom.

CONCEPT

VERDIGRIS Verdigris is a bright bluish-green patina that is created on metal when it is left exposed to air over a period of time, letting it to naturally oxidize. This is commonly used as coatings to protect copper or bronze objects in architecture. The transformation of verdigris involved active chemical reaction, which represents the clients of three generations,

CYNTHIA WIESANJAYA | PORTFOLIO

who are very active in their daily activities. The concept of verdigris will transform the third level of Mariotto Residence into a space, where the clients can relax and be productive in their work, while still holding its architectural value by exposing its raw concrete structure.

OPEN PUBLIC AREA The public areas are combined into one big space to accomodate guests. Accent of mirrors are used to make the space more open and appear larger. The raw concrete structure is exposed to preserve its architectural value of the building. A touch of copper and turquoise is applied to make the space more fun and unique. Marble accent is also used to give a little contrast and provide visual interest with the raw concrete walls.

CONCEPT

nest The idea of nest is connected to the history of the project site, Mission Bay area, as it was a home to shipyards and animals before the area was developed. The area became modern years later with all the modern architecture. The concept of nest will be applied to the space with a

CYNTHIA WIESANJAYA | PORTFOLIO

modern take.

Same with the idea of a nest, it is a sanctuary to nestlings that are waiting for their parents to bring food, as well as a sanctuary to the eggs that are waiting to hatch and offspring. This can also be connected with the client’s mission to provide organic, and high quality products for the customers as well as his vision to motivate and educate the community to have a healthier lifestyle. The market will act as the “nest”, while the client will act as the “parents of the nestlings” that supports and provides organic and healthy foods for the local community.

SPACE PLANNING

SPACE PLANNING Since nests are located at different levels on the tree, the spaces in Hatch Market will be separated based on their traffic flow. The busiest area, which is the restaurant is placed on top of the floor plan, where it is the noisiest and near the main entry. Going down the floor plan, there are gelato counter, demonstration kitchen, and prepared food, where they have medium traffic flow. The least traffic flow areas, such as the market and wine tasting area are placed at the bottom of the floor plan, away from the noise.

PROTOTYPE

Before the furniture construction starts, full scale prototype made of plywood is created to check on the proportion and sturdiness. The furniture construction started off with laying out the lumbers, cutting each pieces and its joineries, gluing everything together, then putting three coats of finish on the chair.

147

149

FINAL PRODUCT

SIDE VIEW Each leg has three parts that are connected by the use of mortise and tenon joinery technique. Dowel joinery is used to attach the legs with the side aprons in order to create a strong support for the chair.

ARMREST Floating tenons are used to attach the armrests to the legs of the chair. The exposed joinery on the armests shows the concept of puzzle, which creates a focal point and character to the chair. 150

FINAL PRODUCT

BACKREST Element of sharp angles are applied throughout the design of the chair to illustrate the idea of the repeating pieces in a puzzle. The sap wood is placed in the middle of the backrest to create a focal point in the center. The exposed dowel joineries show how the back is connected to the armrests and back aprons for support.

PURSE HOLDER The two top "V"s are not only to maintain the overall aesthetic of the chair, but they also function to hold small purses.
