THE CROSSOVER Year 4 Design Studio Feb-Jun 2018

The Crossover proposes a new shopping mall on Swanston Street that improves connectivity in downtown Melbourne and introduces an emerging retail typology, 'retail-tainment'. Located on the busy Swanston Street and between two major shopping malls, the new development takes advantage of the hectic flow of people by providing physical and visual linkages between localities, using the metaphor of a road crossing. The building form results from a parametric process of randomly assembling kit-of-parts, with the intention to facilitate crossover of retail, entertainment, culture and arts. Moreover, a compelling and emotional shopping experience is curated through a light-filled atmosphere that evokes curiosity.

FORM GENERATION & KIT-OF-PARTS

SHOPFRONT KIT-OF-PARTS

The form generation process begins with the collection of existing retail shops/ restaurants in the CBD. They are then simplified and randomly assembled, rotated and scaled to form a building block. Shop windows also collected in the CBD are simplified and applied to the building facades/ shopfronts as an expression of the cultural context.

FORM EVALUATION

20 outcomes are selected from an optimisation test on fitness to site boundary. Comparisons on total floor area, atrium area and interior view of the atrium are then conducted. The outcome that provides the most floor area and atrium area, and the most desirable internal view (evaluated by complexity, variety and asymmetry) is selected to become the final building form.

This form generation process successfully generates a variety of shop sizes, including double or triple span shop spaces. For example, a bookstore can feature a reading area on the lowest level, sell accessories on the middle level and house a cafe on the top-most level.

TAKE A BRICK Year 4 Design Studio Jul-Nov 2018

Take a Brick is a material research that aims to explore the potentials and limitations of 3D-printed Bioplastic-brick dust Composite, and based on those, to speculate on its potential application in architectural designs. The project takes inspirations from the modern transformative cities, in which numerous old buildings crumble to make way for new rising towers. However, challenged by excessive waste and environmental devastation, we must now begin to reflect on building life cycles and search for efficient ways to recycle materials from demolitions.

Three phases of experimentation include an exploration of materials and ratios, a robotic 3D printing exploration (par ticularly in path generation, geometr y and printing speed) and experimentations on the actual material based on previous findings. The final phase focuses on three typologies that work in compression: the vault (optimum curvature), the wall (span and depth of piers) and the column (irregularity and stability). 12

The biggest limitations in all tests are shrinkage and the height limit. Samples deform and crack when drying. When printing, the softness of the material cause displacement and failure at around the 22nd layer. As a response, an infill pattern was introduced to extend the height limit by allowing higher tolerance to displacement, providing more support to the object, and combat cracking by reducing surface area. Despite the abovementioned limitations, the greatest oppor tunity lies in its tactility and rich texture that express its str uctural capabilities. Also, the design can directly communicate to our senses, the visual impact, the smell, the touch and sound. Finally, through this material, we reclaim a sense of place by reusing the material of the previous building.

To sum up, although there are numerous possibilities yet to be explored, this project serves as the first step towards a more novel recycling of material and an inspiration to reflect on our current mode of consumption. Now, let’s take a brick and never stop imagining what a brick could be.

LEARN IN FLOW Year 3 Design Studio Jul-Nov 2017

This design of the new building at University High, Melbourne, aims to cultivate optimal learning experiences based on the Flow theory developed by psychologist CsĂ­kszentmihĂĄlyi. Flow involves intense focus attention facilitated by a rich environment, a carefully designed circulation that minimises disturbance and adequate break-out spaces for recovery. Meanwhile, spatial variety is provided to accommodate different learning styles. With a logical layout and detailed considerations into structure, function and site conditions, this design provides a practical solution for a fun and engaging learning experience for the 21st century.

Skyscraper


SKYSCRAPER Year 4 Applied Architectural Technology Feb-Jun 2018 Group work (contributions: structure and crown detail) This skyscraper consists of a reinforced concrete structural system and a steel diagrid bracing that wraps around the exterior for lateral resistance. It also provides unique aesthetics and environmental benefits (double skin facade). The bracing of 500x500mm steel hollow tubes runs from the ground level to the top to form the crown. It is connected to the concrete floor beams by steel outriggers. Connections occur at every vertex of the rhombus with a maximum span of 24 meters (6 storeys). The 20m high podium, suppor ted by a lightweight steel space frame, provides a large public area at ground level. The long-span space frame (21.6 meters) is supported by concrete columns as well as the steel bracing, which is thickened at ground level for this reason.

Secret Garden


SECRET GARDEN Year 2 Design Studio Feb-Jun 2016 Situated on the Herring Island, this pavilion serves as a resting space for visitors. Featuring an underground garden, this design stems from the idea of ‘secret’, which I define as ‘something that cannot be known from the surface’. The underground space is hidden by tree canopies and walls and hence cannot be seen from above. Light will filter through the underground space, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors to relax and self-contemplate. Another secret lies in the shape of the pavilion yet to be discovered by the visitors. For the bridge symbolises the Yarra River and the triangular core represents the Herring Island.
