Karina's Story A young mother of two who is victim to emotional, phycological, and sexual abuse for over 13 years, and the two young children experiencing physical abuse as well as witnessing abuse. All three victims of the DV were under emotional and phycological abuse and had a core belief the abuse was their fault, and that they weren’t good enough. Living with no self-esteem both children had developed situational anxiety and the mother depression from the DV. The mother also experienced sexual violence with the abuser since age 16 and had a core belief its was ok and not abuse because he was her boyfriend/husband at the time. Both children experienced physical abuse directly in the form of; the daughter being shaken when crying, and the son being dragged across the house by the arm, thrown into walls or a dark room and locked in alone.

The abuse was continued and re trauma; as well as new trauma arose for all three victims when the abuser started to use system abuse to get to the mother, directly effecting both children when they tried to get out. The three vicim’s now live with the biological parents of the mother; who helped raise both children from birth. She continues to receive phycological support from a specialist dealing with woman in DV and so do both children.

The abuser had threatened to use court to further control the vicim (mother). Using alienation, the abuser managed to gain control and traumatise all three victims within the court system and process. The victim mother needs support in finance for legal fees and support for a trial to gain final court orders regarding custody of the children.

INTRODUCTION|1 AMBASSADOR PROGRAM The Ambassador Program's for equipping those to better support and understanding victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse.

Domestic violence is a complex issue that affects people of all ages, genders, and races. This program is designed for individuals who wish to learn more about domestic violence and offer support to those affected by it. We will explore the various forms of domestic violence and address the sensitive issues that arise.

This program is ideal for anyone committed to their community, whether your a health and social care professional, individual working in retail, hospitality, or studying. By participating in this program, you will gain valuable insight into the impact of domestic violence and the role of those working with victims of abuse.

At the end of the program, you will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to assist and support victims and survivors of domestic violence in your community.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 Personal Safety Survey, 2.2 million Australians have experienced domestic violence, while the number of individuals experiencing sexual assaults has risen steadily since 2010.

These are disturbing statistics on domestic violence and sexual assault in Australia.

It's worth noting that in all Australian jurisdictions, domestic violence covers a broad range of behaviours, including assault or personal injury (including sexual assault), intentional damage to property, and threats of such behaviour.

Family and Domestic Violence is a universal problem that claims many lives every year and results in long-term physical and mental difficulties in victims.

Other terms Used for domestic violence are: Domestic Abuse - Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Intimate Partner Abuse - Spousal Abuse - Dating Violence.

It can take place among: Married couples, Dating couples (including teens), Couples in a live-in relationship, Couples with children, and Same sex partners. Domestic violence typically involves violent abuse of an individual by their partner or spouse. Unfortunately, it does not receive the same attention, reportage and condemnation as other crimes in our society and is often overlooked due to these acts are perpetrated behind closed doors.

Victims are subjected to psychological abuse that discourages them from speaking out against perpetrators.

Let's look at some statistics to understand the risks posed by domestic violence in Australia: 17% of women (1.6 million) and 5.9% of men (528,800) have experienced physical violence from a current or former partner from the age of 15.

Around 41% of people seeking help from specialist homelessness services in 2019-20 were experiencing domestic and family violence.

Domestic and family violence was the main reason why 82,000 people sought help from specialist homelessness services in 2019-20 Of the people who sought help from specialist homelessness services due to domestic and family violence related issues, more than three out of four (or 79%) were female.

On average, one woman is killed every nine days by a current or former partner On average, one male is killed every 29 days by a current or former partner.

Healthy relationships are built on a foundation of good communication, mutual respect, honesty, trust, and equality.

Though disagreements may arise, the presence of these positive qualities helps partners to compromise and find solutions. Conversely, unhealthy relationships are characterised by behaviours that lack mutual respect for one another. It is important to note that not all unhealthy relationships are abusive, but they can become so if left unchecked.

Here are some common signs of an unhealthy relationship: Poor communication - Dishonesty Jealousy - Manipulation - Criticism - Disrespect Frequent arguments - Controlling behaviour.

Domestic violence is a behaviour constructed based on gender, with women being the overwhelming victims globally and in Australia.

In Western societies, cultural norms shaped by patriarchy and misogyny teach men to dominate in relationships, equating masculinity with violent behaviour and discouraging vulnerability and emotional expression.

Domestic Violence and Gender The socially constructed idea of gender behaviour increases the risk of violence in domestic relationships, regardless of sexual orientation. Men and individuals belonging to the LGBTIQ community also experience intimate partner violence, with studies showing that in most cases, the perpetrator is male.

A health and wellbeing survey of 5, 476 LGBTIQ respondents by the Australian Research Centre for Health and Sexuality found that 28% of maleidentifying individuals and 41% of femaleidentifying individuals reported being part of an abusive relationship.

A Look at Unhealthy Behaviour Stress is a natural part of human life and manifests itself in different ways and people use various methods to deal with it.

Instances of domestic violence may be higher in families facing severe financial crises. For example, those who are at the verge of losing their homes will be experiencing high levels of stress.

People often rely on past experiences to manage stress, utilising techniques they believe will work. However, some may resort to physically or mentally harming their partners to alleviate their stress. It's important to hold individuals accountable for their actions if they resort to violent or unhealthy behaviour.

Domestic violence should never be normalised as an acceptable way to manage stress.

Effects of Domestic Violence Domestic violence can cause deep and permanent pain and trauma in victims, resulting in emotional and psychological trauma such as shame, anger, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and disrupted mental wellbeing.

Victims may also turn to substance abuse and alcoholism to cope. Domestic violence can also lead to loss of home and physical injuries, disabilities, and death for the victim.

Effects on the family Domestic abuse has long-term and detrimental effects on the family members of the victims as well as the abuser. These effects include longterm conflicts, destruction of properties, emotional and financial difficulties for family members, frequent shifting of homes, physical and mental trauma for children, loss of hope for positive and safe relationships, and a tendency to engage in substance abuse and alcoholism.

TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE There are several types of domestic abuse, including physical, emotional, phycological, intimidation, coercion and threats, sexual, verbal, emotional, isolation, economic and financial, minimising, denying or blaming, and using children against the victim/survivor. Multiple types of abuse can occur in one relationship, and behaviours can escalate and change from one type to another. These behaviours are used to restrict and control the victim/survivor's life, and perpetrators often refuse to acknowledge their behaviour or minimise the harm they have done.

Perpetrators of domestic violence often use children to manipulate and harm their partners. This can occur regardless of whether they are the child’s parent or not. Here are some examples of how children can become involved in the abuse: Requesting children to pass on messages or using them to threaten you in a secretive manner, for instance, by putting notes in their bags or clothes.

Deliberately arriving late for scheduled appointments with the children or refusing to return them on time.

Utilising access visits to intimidate and stalk you.

Blaming you for the situation, even going so far as to turn the children against you.

Threatening to abduct the children or use a court order to remove the mothers contact with them.

The Impact of Domestic Abuse on Victims' Social Well-being.

Domestic abuse in any form inflicts severe emotional, physical, mental, and social damage on the victim. The victim's ability to engage in daily activities is impeded by acts of violence and acute controlling behaviors.

Even after breaking free from abusive partners, the victim requires extensive time and resources to recover and regain a sense of normalcy. Survivors may suffer career setbacks due to emotional stress and frequent absences.

Additionally, they may find it challenging to seek help to escape the trauma, resulting in a vicious cycle of vulnerability and dependence on the abuser.

DECODING DOMESTIC ABUSE Coercive control is a form of oppressive behaviour that instills helplessness and fear in the victim, gradually eroding their self-identity, self-esteem, and independence. Examples of controlling and coercive control behaviour provided by the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice include depriving the victim of independence, isolating them from friends and family, limiting their access to basic necessities, restricting access to healthcare and employment opportunities, creating a threatening environment, and employing psychological manipulation.

The wheel demonstrates how 8 different types of abuser tactics partner with physical and sexual violence to control a victim and is made up of an outer ring that focuses on Physical and Sexual Violence, then interacts with these components (sourced from DAIC): Different forms of abuse can be used to control and manipulate victims: 1. Intimidation through looks, gestures or actions to create fear.

2. Emotional abuse to exploit the victim's vulnerability.

3. Isolation to control the victim from personal and social resources.

4. Minimizing, denying, and blaming to shift blame and control the victim's emotions.

5. Using children as pawns to make the victim feel low.

6. Male privilege and abuse of power in patriarchal societies.

7. Economic abuse to restrict the victim's economic resources.

8. Coercion and threats through acts of assault, humiliation, and intimidation.

The Cycle of Abuse is a theory that explains the patterns of behavior in an abusive relationship.

It was introduced by American psychologist Lenore A. Walker in 1979 and is now widely used in domestic violence programs to help victims understand and break free from the cycle of abuse. The Cycle of Abuse consists of four stages.

Tension- Building - During this stage, hostility and high-stress begin to develop from the pressures of daily life. The stress is accompanied by frequent arguments and abusive behaviour.

Incident - During this stage, incidents of violence and emotional abuse / psychological abuse / economic abuse erupt. The abuser uses power and control methods to dominate the victim who may be inclined to seek help, call the police or leave the house but is afraid of the consequences, which discourages them from taking action. Instead, the victim chooses to stay in the relationship and pacify the abuser.

Reconciliation - The reconciliation stage is when the abuser shows remorse and asks for forgiveness. They manage to convince the victim that they can have a healthy relationship again.

The abuser may also blame the victim for acts of provocation.

Calm - At this stage, the relationship is calm and peaceful. The abuser makes efforts to change their behaviour. The victim begins to believe the horrid past is behind them.

However, abusers begin to go back to their old ways after a certain period and the Cycle of Abuse repeats itself.

In abusive relationships, children are often overlooked. They may feel responsible for the abuse and believe that nobody cares about

their

experiences.

Emotionally

abused children may be hesitant to discuss their feelings, and each child's reaction to domestic abuse should be understood individually. Identifying what the child has experienced is crucial instead of following a checklist of indicators for understanding what the effects of these experiences may be.

It's important to have conversations about their abusive experiences to help them understand that the violence is not their fault and that it's not an acceptable way to solve problems.

Domestic violence and child abuse are strongly linked, with many child abuse crimes being committed in households where

Children who also witness abuse are at higher risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of domestic violence and may have difficulty developing social bonds. These experiences can have lifelong impacts on the child.

Children are increasingly recognised as victims of domestic violence in many countries, including Australia. Witnessing domestic violence take's various forms, including hearing, participation, and being used as a physical weapon, a spy, or a hostage. Children may also defend or intervene

Understanding the scope of witnessing domestic violence is critical to recognise the seriousness of the behaviour.

Child victims of domestic violence are highly vulnerable to experience prolonged physical or mental traumas and need a good support system and protection from domestic violence and its after effects. Abused children need to engage with someone "neutral' such as a social care assistant or child counsellor or phycologist.

The main objectives of intervention are to hold the perpetrator accountable and help the victim move forward. A strong understanding of the victim's vulnerability is crucial when working with them.

You should be extremely careful, sensitive, empathetic and non-judgemental while coming along side her support system.

Always be mindful of yourself as efforts taken to uplift victims of FDV can take a toll on a person both mentally and emotionally. Sometimes, unintentional mistakes can occur and the support person may not be aware of this happening. Always seek the advice of professionals.

Having a sensitive approached lead by empathy, care, knowledge and awareness about domestic violence can help you support someone who is going through it. While each woman and situation is unique, there are tips you can follow to ensure they feel safe and comfortable enough to ask for help.

If you are unable to provide direct assistance, you can help by finding the right professional help for them. Here are some recommendations on how to do this: Choose a convenient, safe, and confidential place and time to talk. Express concern and wait for her to open up. Communicate effectively about your intention and care for their safety. Listen to them and assert that whatever is happening is not their fault and that they deserve better treatment. Respect their choices and encourage them to stay strong and build a support system. Introduce them to support communities or encourage them to talk to someone close to them who could support them.

Work with her boundaries to understand what she needs. Provide her with the required contacts and connections with to legal, practical and social information that empowers her to file her cases in the right manner. Enable her to understand the impact of domestic violence and find measures to help recover from the trauma. Work with your community to spread awareness about domestic violence.

Educate her about the options for addressing her issues and empower her to choose what is right for her and her children. Give reasonable and practical advice and respect their choices. Don’t make her feel like she doesn’t have control over her choices. Ask instead of assuming. Convince her she is not at fault regarding abuse. Remind her that violence cannot

Exposure to family violence can have a detrimental impact on a child's mental and physical health, housing situation, general wellbeing, and development. Studies have shown that exposure to family violence is associated with a range of negative outcomes, including diminished educational attainment, reduced social participation, physical and psychological disorders, suicidal ideation, behavioural difficulties, homelessness, future victimisation, and violent offending. These impacts are being investigated as part of the First national study of child abuse and neglect in Australia, scheduled from 2019-2023. Furthermore, when a child is exposed to family violence alongside other risk factors, such as socioeconomic disadvantage, parental mental illness, and parental substance abuse, the negative outcomes are likely to be more severe. However, exposure to family violence alone does not necessarily result in negative outcomes for children. With the right support, children exposed to family violence can develop increased resilience later in life.

Sexual abuse in a marriage is a form of domestic violence. It's about one spouse having power, control, and dominance over the other, and is usually accompanied by other types of abuse.

Examples of sexual abuse may include: forcing or manipulating someone into sex, engaging in sexual activities when they are unable to consent, hurting them with objects during sex, involving others in sexual activities without their consent, or preventing them from using birth control or making decisions about pregnancy.

It's crucial to understand that sex should always be consensual, whether you're married or not. Being a spouse doesn't give anyone the right to demand sex at any time, and it's essential to recognise that sexual abuse goes beyond rape or forced sex. It can encompass any unwelcome sexual act or behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable. It's important to know your boundaries and recognise any signs of sexual abuse to ensure a healthy and safe relationship.

Many people may not even realise they're being abused and think it's a duty as a spouse.

Being sexually assaulted by a spouse is a personal violation of trust. This is the person you love and who is supposed to love and cherish you. To live in constant fear of that person is confusing and heart-breaking. A person in a committed relationship can not be raped, right? Wrong, any sexual act performed without your consent is rape, no matter if it is your spouse or a stranger. Victims of stranger rape do not always report their assault, and victims of marital rape almost never report it Spousal sexual abuse victims may not acknowledge their trauma due to multiple factors, including but not limited to: Loyalty to their spouse; Cultural or religious beliefs; Lack of experience with sex; Shame and guilt; The belief that sex under duress is not considered assault; A sense of obligation to their partner.

It's important to recognise that sexual assault can occur within a marriage and should not be dismissed or excused under any circumstances.

It is critical to understand that victims of sexual abuse by their spouse experience long-term mental and physical health repercussions if left without the right support. This trauma is no less severe than an assault by a stranger.

What's more, survivors must continue to live with their abuser and suffer from fear and anxiety. It's essential to report sexual assault to the authorities, even if it's by a partner. Remember, marital rape is against the law in every state in both Australia and the USA. .
