OPINION

‘Quote’ T

he year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. - Pres. Abraham Lincoln , Oct. 3, 1863

U. S. Supreme Court to hear health care law challenge

A

s has been expected, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to decide the constitutionality of the health care reform law championed by President Barack Obama. The justices made their announcement in a brief order issued last Monday. Attorneys for the Government and the state challengers of the law will have oral arguments in March. The Supreme Court would then be expected to make a ruling in June 2012, making the decision a critical aspect of the 2012 presidential race. The decision comes days after Ohio voters overwhelmingly passed State Issue 3, the Ohio Healthcare Freedom Amendment. The measure calls for exempting residents of Ohio from national health care mandates which would stop any state law from forcing persons, employers or health care providers from participating in a health care system. Issue 3 passed 65 percent to 35 percent. The high court agreed to hear two major questions: whether the law’s key provision is unconstitutional, and if so, whether the entire law, with its 450 sections, is therefore invalid. At legal issue is whether the individual mandate section of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, requiring nearly all Americans to buy health insurance by 2014 or face financial penalties, is an improper exercise of federal authority. The 26 states who joined the suit

Turkeys unite - save yourselves (Editor’s note - this column is published posthumously for Thomas J. Turkey, a fighter for fowl rights. By the way, he was delicious!) s you read this, I am probably roasting in an oven somewhere, soon to become the centerpiece of someone’s Thanksgiving dinner. If so, I would plead for amnesty for my brethren. If not — please save my neck!! I am calling for all birds, not just turkeys to join “Occupy Thanksgiving.” For most of the year, we turkeys are the kings of the barnyard. We rule. But as autumn approaches, the respect we get from the other fowl begins to disappear. Even the chickens begin to snicker when they go by. The ducks and geese have been known to say “I hope you can carve a nice future for yourself…” before bursting into laughter and heading off to the pond where I can’t chase them. Why do you want to eat a big bird that doesn’t really have

A

much flavor until you add the gravy? It’s not OUR fault that we go so well Thomas J. with stuffing and Turkey cranberry sauce! And don’t forget Delicious with that eating turkey mashed potatoes always makes you and gravy fall asleep after the meal. But there are alternatives you should consider that won’t put you into slumberland. Wouldn’t a nice, succulent ham, or maybe a standing rib roast be more delicious? How about a roasted lamb with that mint jelly? But no — it’s always turkey. You don’t know how it is. I mean, I’d like to watch the football games on Thanksgiving, too. My brother said it was nothing to lose my head over and I told him that’s exactly what’s going to happen! I saw the farmer walking toward me last week and he said “Tom, old boy, I’m going to axe you something…” I responded “Do you mean ‘ask’?” He grinned… “Uh… no…” When I was just a poult (that’s what they call us when we’re

babies) I saw a cute female turkey. I said “Hey, chick… wanna go out?” Her mom stepped in, however… she said “His kind never stick around more than a year.” As I got a little older, I noticed my buddies and I were putting on a lot of weight. I tried to join a gym, but my feet wouldn’t reach the pedals on the stationary bike. I’m tired of being told to not get my feathers ruffled. I’m mad as heck and I’m not going to take it anymore! Over the years, the President of the United States has seen fit to spare one of us. I think that is a wonderful trend that should be repeated across the nation. What we turkeys need is a lobbyist in Washington. Right now, when someone mentions turkey to those guys, they think of a country like many that is fighting terrorism. Yet, we turkeys in America are terrorized each year. If I survive 2011, I am planning to start a PAC, financed by the beef industry, that will bring equal rights to turkeys. Freedom for Meleagris gallopavo!

Happy Thanksgiving 2011!

I

sometimes feel, in my careers as a talk show host and columnist that the world around us is an awful place and we’re lucky to make it through any given day. It’s the price I pay, I suppose, for examining and magnifying the news headlines. The fact of the matter is we have so much to be thankful for in this great United States of America! I don’t want to sit and create a list but it’s the only way I know to share with you the things for which I am grateful; a list I’m sure most of you share to some degree. I am so Blessed to have my wonderful wife Kathy for the past 36 years and looking forward to many more to come. God also presented us with two wonder-

ful children and the ability to share what happy, healthy families share. Even in the turbulent and sometimes bitter election we just wrapped up, we have to appreciate that we are so fortunate to live in a country where we can make the kinds of choices and decisions we make on Election Day without fearing arrest, or even death, for making those choices. We are about to enter

into religious Holidays that will have to be celebrated in hiding places in nations around the world, since religious freedom is seen as threatening to those nations’ rulers. I am thankful for all those who have touched our lives, some who are still with us and some who have moved on to their great rewards. I am so grateful for our extended families, some close by and some separated by physical miles, but present with us in our hearts. I am so thankful for the brave men and women in uniform all across the globe defending all the rights I just outlined in this country; and a special thanks to the families making the sacrifice here at home celebrating the Holi-

days missing their loved one stationed abroad. Yes, the list could go on and on. Suffice it to say, it’s great we have a Thanksgiving Day to pause and realize just what, and who, we all too often take for granted. wasteful spending” and accuses Sen. Sherrod Brown of “ignoring the problem” with Medicare’s finances, the truth is that the changes in the health care law actually extended the life of Medicare. The ads say that the law means “seniors could lose their doctors” or that it “threatens seniors’ ability to keep their own doctor.” However what the ads are talking about here has nothing to do with the Affordable Health Care Act. Some doctors have said they may stop accepting Medicare patients because of scheduled payment cuts set in motion by a 1997 law, cuts that are unaffected by the new statute. The ads say that the Affordable Health Care Act cuts $500 billion from Medicare. It’s true that the law would restrain future growth of the program, but this isn’t cutting from existing spending, as the amount is spread over 10 years, totaling about 7 percent of what Medicare is project-

ed to cost over that decade. The ad also features seniors saying the law will “hurt the quality of our care.” The truth is that the Affordable Health Care Act specifically forbids cuts in the basic package of Medicare benefits, and even adds some new features, such as wellness checkups. It also closes the “doughnut hole” gap in the prescription drug benefit, which will save Medicare recipients a substantial amount of money. It is very ironic that the right wingers are saying that Senator Brown is attempting to defund Medicare, as these very same right wingers in the House of Representa-

tives voted several months ago for the Paul Ryan Budget which would replace Medicare with a half-baked voucher system, which would greatly diminish health care for seniors. The radicals on the right despise Senator Brown, because he along with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, has been the most vocal against their efforts to eliminate Medicare and Social Security. The people of Ohio will not be swayed by these feeble attempts to distort Senator Brown’s record. --John Murphy is the president of the South Dayton Democratic Club. It has been the most talked about high school basketball showcase in the Miami Valley each of the past 10 years, bringing some of the best talent from across the country and pitting them against the best the Dayton area has to offer. Last week, it added national recognition to that impressive resume’. The 10th Anniversary of the Good Samaritan Flyin’ To The Hoop Basketball Invitational will be held Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (January 13-16) back at Trent Arena in Kettering. Flyin’ To The Hoop President Eric Horstman was notifed last week that the event was named the number two showcase event in the entire nation by CBS Sports and Maxpreps. Past success has certainly played a part in gaining national attention, but the 2012 field is enough to grab some attention. This year’s field includes two of the top five teams in the nation in Findlay Prep, NV (#1) and Huntington Prep, WV (#2). The top-rated senior in the nation, Isaiah Austin out of Grace Prep, TX will be joined by the top-rated sophomore in Andrew Wiggins out of Huntington Prep. Four of the top 10 seniors in the nation will be on display along seven 5-star players and 14 4-star players. The top two teams in the state of Ohio will battle it out on Saturday night when Columbus Northland (#1) takes on Garfield Heights (#2). The showcase currently boasts more than 75 division I college recruits and that list continues to grow. The schedule for the 2012 event includes:

CHS graduate is Good Neighbor Award finalist Fort Wayne realtor Lynn (Halloran) Reecer, a Centerville High School graduate, is one of 10 finalists out of about 1.1 million realtors nationally in the Realtor Magazine Good Neighbor Awards, earning recognition for her extensive efforts in creating the Aboite Trails (now a part of the Fort Wayne Trails network) with co-founder Stephanie Schultz and their devoted team of volunteers and staff. Reecer is a 1980 graduate of Centerville High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University. This year marks the 12th year the Good Neighbor Awards program has recognized

Realtors who volunteer to serve the needs of those who are less fortunate. The Realtors acknowledged by this program over the years have donated their time, money and efforts to help improve the quality of life for others in their communities. Five winners will be selected from among the 10 finalists and will receive travel expenses to the 2011 Realtors Conference and Expo in Anaheim, Calif. Winners will also receive national media exposure for their community cause and a $10,000 grant for their charity. In addition, five honorable mentions will receive a $2,500 grant. The winners will be

announced in the November/December issue of Realtor Magazine. Reecer co-founded and led a nonprofit to design and build a state-of-theart bicycle and pedestrian trails system in Allen County. Following the tragic death of a close family friend and cyclist in 2001, Reecer co-founded Aboite New Trails (now Fort Wayne Trails), which raised $13 million, built over 20 miles of new trails, successfully influenced the city of Fort Wayne to hire a greenways manager and partnered with the public sector to make Fort Wayne safer, pedestrian friendly and economically viable.
