CELEBRITY

MISTAKEN IDENTITY

Joan Rivers mistaken for illegal immigrant LONDON US comedienne Joan Rivers was quizzed by British officials when she was mistaken for an immigrant illegally entering the UK. Four border patrol officers descended on Rivers as she disembarked from a fishing boat on the Swale Estuary near Kent, after they received a tip-off regarding a suspicious group of people. Rivers, her daughter Melissa, and her TV crew were questioned for several minutes at the scene before officials recognised Rivers. The funnywoman, who was filming a segment for her new TV show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best!, insists the incident was amusing and admits she thought her questioners were good-looking. “Even though we were innocent I am so sorry they didn’t arrest us. I love Englishmen and they were very cute!” she said.

Transition to kinder MARYANNE TAOUK Clergate PubliC SChool has little over sixty students, but that doesn’t stop them from being innovative. the small staff have held weekly transition classes for those heading to kindergarten next year. these classes began early in the year and have run right up until the end of year, to insure both students and parents are ready for the start of school the following year.

“it’s really to take the fear out of kindergarten, so they’re familiar with their surroundings, get to know the teachers and interact with other children” says transition teacher Sharon Cloete, “they are with the same group of children they will be starting kindergarten with, so they know how to make friends, it is to compliment the preschool programs.” the experience has the students raring to get to ‘big school’, “i paint and play in transition, i’m ready for big school, because i’m

big” says four year old Caitlin, “My friend is ellen, and this is my big school so we will play together. i’m not scared not even a little bit!” “We practice handwriting for big school, and paintings, i want to do craft in big school” says harry “My friend is lincoln and tully, and we play too.” Kindergarten teacher, Natalie Philpott, has been working with the up and coming students throughout the final term of school, to familiarise herself with the students and have them feel comfortable with their

surroundings. “i bring the children into the kindergarten classroom for the whole of term four, setting them up for next year, even taking instructions from someone different other than their regular transition teacher, is a big step in getting them ready,” says Natalie. Clergate School have had twentyone transition students attend their classes this year, ensuring there will be twenty-one parents and students that won’t be inconsolable come 9am on January 29th.
