TO THE COMMUNITY As we look back on the past year and look forward to the year ahead, we are happy to be able to showcase our efforts to enhance our role as the community’s provider of choice when it comes to healthcare services.

Many exciting developments, some of which you will read about in this year’s annual report, are on the near horizon for us here at CVMC. Now in our 26th year serving Carson Valley and the surrounding region, we have grown from a small medical clinic, when our doors first opened in 1993, to a network of more than 130 board-certified physicians and a support staff of more than 400 employees working in multiple conveniently located facilities around the community today.

The past year has seen a number of significant improvements to the way we continue to care for the community’s health, including the addition of a 128-slice CT machine, which will allow for increased ability to perform cardiac studies and other important diagnostics, the completion of an expansion to our Minden Family Medicine clinic, and the arrival of 3D mammography technology at our main campus – all as part of a continued effort to grow to meet the needs of a growing community and allow you to access highquality healthcare services close to home.

And that is the heart of it – this community, your home, is our home. We are a proud partner in your health, and we look forward to continuing to raise the bar on quality and scope of services offered to our friends, our neighbors and our community.

Together We Are Stronger: Key Partnerships In Our Community East Fork Fire Protecti on District & Douglas County Sheriff ’s Offi ce It’s the community’s first responders who provide the most integral healthcare partnership when it comes to immediate critical need. East Fork Fire Protection District is an all-risk fire and EMS service provider and is one of Nevada’s largest combination fire and emergency medical services agencies.

It has a career staff of 62 who work hand-in-hand with 34 volunteer fire and medical personnel to meet the service demands of our community. The District supports fourteen fire stations including five stations manned 24/7 and eight volunteer departments to provide all risk service. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office employs 122 people through its administration, investigations, jail and patrol plus more than 200 volunteers. In addition to carrying out law enforcement and emergency response functions within the community, DCSO provides youth programs such as Explorer POST and interaction with schoolage children through the School Resource Deputies. CVMC is proud to work in partnership with both agencies in practical day-to-day interactions as well as through organizational partnerships such as the Douglas County Behavioral Health Task Force, the Committee on Health, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Community Emergency Response Team and the Quad-County Healthcare Coalition.

Western Nevada College Over the years, Western Nevada College has become a highly valued healthcare provider with its Nursing & Allied Health division. WNC is among the top-ranked nursing schools and boasts job placement rates of 100 percent in recent years. Aside from producing top-notch registered nurses, the school also trains laboratory assistants and certified nursing assistants, along with emergency medical technicians and health information technologists. CVMC has had the pleasure of taking on nurse apprentices from WNC in recent years, giving them valuable on-the-job experience in our emergency and inpatient departments.

Douglas High School Douglas High School’s athletic department annually produces competitive teams that involve our community’s teenagers as they continue to develop in sports and physical fitness. CVMC supports the school’s athletic programs and this past year donated a pair of automated external defibrillators, which can be used to re-establish effective heart rhythms in an emergency.

Raley’s – Gardnerville This past year, CVMC employees donated portions of their annual bonuses toward Raley’s Food For Families program, which helped provide holiday meals to families in need within the community. Raley’s customers also donated funds to purchase teddy bears to be given to young CVMC patients in need of some comfort during their stay in the emergency department or hospital.

“I’ve never worked at a small local hospital,” said Dr. Krull, who completed her medical training at the University of South Florida and in New York City. “When I interviewed here [with CVMC], I loved the staff, and the small community was just very appealing to work in. And the need for rheumatology in this area is great.”

A rheumatologist is a physician trained in internal medicine who further specializes in musculoskeletal diseases and systems. They can treat and manage autoimmune conditions, conditions that affect muscles, bones and joints. Common diseases treated by a rheumatologist include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, gout, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Dr. Krull said her main focus is on building strong relationships with her patients in order to enhance and improve their treatments. “I like to get to know my patients as a whole, not just the joints or conditions I’m treating,” she said. “I discuss with them what they are comfortable with – what medicines, or if they want to try alternative therapies. I have found that when you take into account the patient’s desires as to how they want to treat their conditions, you get the best results.”

“I’m just excited to be able to provide this care to these patients because I know that this area has really needed a rheumatologist for a long time. I’m excited to be able to offer that for people and be here to help them.”

Dr. Krull also said she is looking forward to getting better acquainted with the community. “I love the outdoor activities and just being in the mountains,” she said. “I’m a Florida girl, so I am used to the beaches and that sort of thing. This area has a whole different world of outdoor activities to participate in – hiking, boating, skiing in the winter. I’m still learning to ski, but I enjoy it.”

SERVICES expand our services to better meet the needs of our community.

This year, we are excited to introduce: 3D Mammography Early in 2019, CVMC added wide-angle 3D mammography to its array of advanced diagnostic imaging services. The new equipment was recently installed in a newly upgraded imaging suite designed specifically to house the technology. 3D mammography has quickly become the standard of care in the medical field, giving patients the best chance for an early and accurate diagnosis. The revolutionary technology works by taking X-ray pictures of each breast from many angles that are not available in traditional mammography. The tube moves in a 50-degree arc around the breast, taking 25 images during the exam. Those images are then sent to a computer and assembled into a three-dimensional picture of each breast. The result is a clearer image that helps radiologists look inside the breast, layer by layer, to find tumors better than standard two-dimensional mammography alone, leaving breast cancer with no place to hide.

In 2018, the CVMC Hospital Foundation received $135,956 in charitable contributions. Funds raised through the CVMC Hospital Foundation go directly back into the community by supporting CVMC in the acquisition of life-saving healthcare equipment and expansion of healthcare services.

In recent years, foundation funds have been integral in establishing the CVMC Foundation’s education scholarships; the Pink Fund, which assists local patients dealing with the challenges of breast cancer diagnoses and treatments; and the purchase of UV light disinfection technology for our surgery department, ICU and acute care hospital.

Behavioral Health CVMC has offered behavioral health services to patients over the age of 65 through its Vitality for Life program for many years and will continue to do so. However, in 2018, growing requests from the community, area physicians and healthcare partners led CVMC to begin exploring expanded options for behavioral health services.In an effort to direct the assessment and implementation of continued expansion into the field of behavioral health, CVMC hired its first Director of Behavioral Health Services in November. Minden Family Medicine The Minden Family Medicine practice at 1649 Lucerne Street in Minden expanded in 2019, improving access to same day and walk-in primary care access in the Carson Valley community. The expansion was largely funded through contributions made by the CVMC Hospital Foundation. The newly configured practice features new exam rooms, a children’s care room and an expanded waiting room. The practice received more than 12,300 visits in 2018 – nearly a 10 percent increase over 2017, which saw nearly a 9 percent increase in visits over 2016. With six primary care providers on staff and the additional space to better accommodate its patients, Minden Family Medicine is looking forward to continuing to grow and serve more of the community well into the future.

SERVICES expand our services to better meet the needs of our community.

This year, we are excited to introduce: 3D Mammography Early in 2019, CVMC added wide-angle 3D mammography to its array of advanced diagnostic imaging services. The new equipment was recently installed in a newly upgraded imaging suite designed specifically to house the technology. 3D mammography has quickly become the standard of care in the medical field, giving patients the best chance for an early and accurate diagnosis. The revolutionary technology works by taking X-ray pictures of each breast from many angles that are not available in traditional mammography. The tube moves in a 50-degree arc around the breast, taking 25 images during the exam. Those images are then sent to a computer and assembled into a three-dimensional picture of each breast. The result is a clearer image that helps radiologists look inside the breast, layer by layer, to find tumors better than standard two-dimensional mammography alone, leaving breast cancer with no place to hide.

In 2018, the CVMC Hospital Foundation received $135,956 in charitable contributions. Funds raised through the CVMC Hospital Foundation go directly back into the community by supporting CVMC in the acquisition of life-saving healthcare equipment and expansion of healthcare services.

Behavioral Health CVMC has offered behavioral health services to patients over the age of 65 through its Vitality for Life program for many years and will continue to do so. However, in 2018, growing requests from the community, area physicians and healthcare partners led CVMC to begin exploring expanded options for behavioral health services.In an effort to direct the assessment and implementation of continued expansion into the field of behavioral health, CVMC hired its first Director of Behavioral Health Services in November. In 2018, CVMC built on its Stay Hydrated program, geared toward encouraging the community toward proper hydration. More than 10,000 bottles of water were distributed for free through our Hydration Station at community events during the year.

Community Wellness Program Hand in hand with our vision to strengthen our community by providing accessible, affordable, high-quality healthcare to all, CVMC has constructed an annual Community Wellness Program focused on helping members of our community improve their health through affordable wellness screenings, health education courses and resources, and youth- and senior-specific programs. These include “Know Your Numbers” monthly lab draws and wellness tests at discounted rates, special monthly screening packages, online weekly wellness sessions, an annual community health fest, discounted youth sports physicals and our new “Silver Screenings” program, where senior citizens are offered free screening tests in the lobby of the local movie theater and then issued free admission to a movie currently playing at the theater. In 2018, CVMC rolled out special screening packages for heart health (February), hearing (March), women’s health (May) and men’s health (June).
