Scandinavian all-mountain since 1981

It began in 1981, when the founders Patrik Söderlund and Stefan Cederberg started to make snowboards in their parents’ garage in Östersund, Sweden. They had picked up the signals of what was going on in the US and soon they started to experiment with snowboard manufacturing. The families’ garages were turned into an inventor’s workshop with a lot of ideas and creativity. In 1993 Extrem Snowboards of Scandinavia was founded and the tiny garage was changed into a larger factory building. The growth came quickly and very soon Extrem became one of the most selling snowboard brands in Sweden. In 1998 the company started to make skis under the same brand, which were then the first Swedish made alpine skis in 25 years. Today, only skis are manufactured and sold under brand name Extrem.

After having been owned by a Norwegian outdoor group for four years, Extrem was repurchased by the founders and three new investors in 2011. The company is now called Åre Skidfabrik (Åre Ski Factory) and is Scandinavia’s only alpine ski factory, where Extrem is a wholly owned brand. Most of the machinery is from 2009, when large investments were made in the factory. The choice of machinery has been made by the requirement to produce skis with very high quality and with flexible production. In addition to the modern machinery, the employees have long experience from building high quality skis, suitable for all kind of skiing. The product development is to a large extent still managed by the founders.

All-mountain optimized for slopes

Female performance

For skiers who want playful performance whether it is icy pre-season, newly groomed corduroy or spring snow conditions. The all-mountain tip and tail rocker makes the skis turn effortlessly on hard packed, as well as floating on all soft snow. The construction with Swedish birch wood core, reinforced with double layers of titanal and dampening rubber membranes, gives all-mountain piste skis with incredibly sharp performance to have fun with on the entire mountain.

Exactly the same models as PT 84 and Project 100, but built with lighter and softer wood cores, adjusted for lighter skiers. In other words, all mountain skis for the entire mountain custom built for female riders without sacrificing any performance. The female construction concept on these two skis has proven to be great and the largest Swedish ski magazine Ă…ka Skidor picked the Project 100 Woman as an obvious winner in the category All-mountain skis for females 2013.

Project 100 & 110 Scandinavian all-mountain

”Praised as the best all-mountain ski that Åka Skidor has ever tested, and that says a lot.” (test review on Project 100, Åka Skidor #6 2012). Simply optimal all-mountain skis for demanding Scandinavian conditions that work on icy slopes, windpacked, powder or spring snow! The elliptic tip and tail rocker adds floatation in the soft snow, at the same time as it becomes easy to ski on the hard packed. The construction with a birch or poplar woodcore, reinforced with double layers of titanal and dampening rubber membranes makes the skis stable and the skier confident.

Based on the Project 100, but with a 20 percent lighter high-performance construction for all-mountain skiing or backcountry tours. The birch wood core is exchanged to a lighter poplar wood core, the double titanal layers are exchanged to double layers of carbon and the rubber dampening in tip and tail is exchanged to the lightweight material Tubecomb for less swing weight.

OPINION

A uniquely community-developed ski Created by the members of Freeride.se, Scandinavia’s largest web site for skiers, in a forum thread with 1.400 member posts, 600.000 visits and one year of development. Opinion, and the unique product development behind the ski, has been awarded with one of the most prestigious awards in the global sports industry – ispo Award Gold Winner 2014 in the Ski category. Opinion is optimized to quench the powder thirst and to rule in slush and other soft snow, but at the same time be able to ski with plenty of pressure on the slopes. A harmonious tapered tip and tail, combined with a low-rise rocker profile, has created a ski that is a delight to spend time with in all types of snow conditions. The ski is made out of snappy poplar wood and stable beech wood, in combination with the lightweight material Tubecomb in tip and tail. This has created a ski that is playful and easy to manoeuvre, but which also shows full performance at high speed over bumps and on hard packed. Read the full product development process in the thread at freeride.se/opinion.
