Threads of

GOLD

Smales Jewellers rich history celebrated in their new Gold Heritage Collection

In Western Australian the gold rush began with the first discovery of gold in the late 1890s. News of the gold spread fast and soon gold prospectors were arriving to seek their fortune and the set-up of towns in the dusty landscapes of the Kalgoorlie emerged.

Lonely clusters of tents and rough bough sheds were soon transformed into a booming gold rush town. Hotels lined the main streets and bustling town centres soon boasted butchers, bakers, schools and churches with the completion of the Golden Pipeline, this arid region was given a constant supply of fresh water and an permanent residency for many.

In 1937, Ron Smales Snr opened Kalgoorlie’s first watch and jewellery repair store in the now historic Hannan Street. The street once a buzzing gold hub, continued to provide a fascinating glimpse into the colourful spirit of the gold rush era that once was.

It was here the small jewellery store grew from watch repairs to creating exquisite gold nugget jewellery. Nuggets were no longer seen as just gold rocks, but pieces of art, worn as pendants, earrings and rings.

Fast forward to 1989 and Ron Smales Jnr expanded the business to Subiaco in Perth. It was here the company established another jewellery and watch studio and introduced Seiko and Grand Seiko to Western Australia.

In honour of their humble beginnings the Smales Gold Heritage collection brings a slice of history into the millennium.

Gold is a commodity which is reliable on a combination of supply, demand, and investor behaviour. Since 2011 the price of gold has increased significantly, and has proven to be a valuable resource used to diversify financial and super portfolios, making this metal worth its investment. As history has shown gold has the ability to hold its value and to increase with time, creating an appeal like no other.

The collection combines gold nuggets with bespoke Deep Sea Australian Pearls, Kimberley Diamonds and Australian Boulder Opals. Each piece is unique, sourced from Goldfields prospectors and made in Australia with superior quality and craftsmanship. With a range suiting all tastes and budgets, you’re bound to find a golden thread to weave into your own beautiful story.

21

Want to Know More ?

What is a Natural Gold Nugget? It is a piece of gold that broke out of quartz deposits within the earth when erosion took place at some point of time. Each piece is a one of a kind with no two being exactly alike.

Where do they come from? All Smales nuggets have been sourced from the Goldfields of Western Australia.

How pure are they? Gold nuggets range from 75 to 95 fine 18-23KT gold and can have other mineral content such as silver and copper mixed in with it.

How are they weighed? They are weighed by the troy ounce which is 12 ounces to the pound. This differs from a standard pound which is 16 ounces. The larger the nugget the more rare and valuable they are. A one-ounce nugget is now considered as rare as a five-carat diamond. (How many of those do you own?)

What is meant by Natural Gold Nuggets? Not all Gold nuggets are natural, some are man-made by taking smaller gold flakes melting them and casting them into the shape of a nugget. All Smales Jewellers nuggets are genuine natural gold nuggets as found by the miners.

The Empyrean

Perched high above the City Beach streetscape overlooking the shimmering Indian Ocean resides The Empyrean, Zorzi’s breathtakingly modernistic custom build. Part structure, part sculpture, the bold cubist form responds to the steep street elevation with a series of horizontally oriented planes of contrasting tones that define and break up the home’s jaw-dropping scale.

Durable, low maintenance materials have been carefully selected to blend with the coastal surrounds from luxurious stone to warm composite timbers and feature cladding.

31

Ascending the entry staircase and opening the large double doors reveals The Empyrean’s sophisticated blend of open and intimate zones, with all rooms wrapping around two soaring upper level voids which further emphasize the homes grand sense of space.

The stylish and functional luxury kitchen flaunts two separate wet and dry rooms, with a black marble preparation island, designed to bring the family together. Simply compress the sleek concertina doors to open up the interior to the expansive resort style entertainment precinct, complete with alfresco kitchenette and a dazzling L-shaped pool.

32
33

The Peak

Situated on the banks of the Swan River in Dalkeith, this home offers family living at its finest. Despite its expansive size, incorporating 4 spacious bedrooms and multiple living zones, clever design and extensive glazing ensures of stunning river views from every single room of the home.

Expert craftsmanship and a plethora of features combine to create a home of the highest calibre. These include a basalt wall that flows from outside to in and two-storey floor to ceiling windows that allow an abundance of natural light to flow into the home whilst transforming the spectacular views into a backdrop for luxury living.

34
35

Dalkeith

Nestled in the heart of Dalkeith this luxurious family home was designed for entertaining in style. Winner of the HIA 2020 Perth and WA Golden Key Display Home of the Year, this home is set to impress guests, from the sleek contemporary façade and inviting entry, right through to the rear resort-style entertaining area.

The sophisticated, contemporary design features a neutral palette of quality materials, including stone flooring that

extends from the entry right through to the alfresco area, which when opened up via sliding glass doors in the combined kitchen dining and living area, creates a seamless expansive space for wining and dining guests with the sparkling pool and landscaped gardens as a backdrop.

With a number of living spaces and four bedrooms including a guest suite downstairs and master suite upstairs there’s also plenty of room for those who want to stay.

36
37

Nero

Despite a narrow, restricted building site, inspired design that makes the most of every available inch, crams 546sqm of luxurious living space into ‘Nero’ - a striking contemporary masterpiece from Grandwood by Zorzi. A monochromatic palette which flows from interior to exterior spaces adds to the modern aesthetic and creates visual continuity throughout the home. This is complemented by feature timber detailing in the kitchen and a spectacular double height feature stone wall in the living room that houses the fireplace and imbues an organic warmth throughout the interior.

38
39

The Retreat

Optimising the spectacular views was the key objective in the design of this gorgeous Mosman Park residence. As a result, the luxuriously appointed kitchen, dining, living room and covered alfresco have all been positioned on the upper floor of the home, allowing the expansive views of the river and city to the north and Mosman Park Golf Course to the south, to take centre stage.

40
41
42

A reflection of the neighborhood, the home is sophisticated and elegant, beautifully combining classic features such as feature pillars and timber clad ceilings, with sleek, modern cabinetry in the interior and exterior kitchens.

Oversized windows not only take in the stunning vistas but ensure the home is filled with natural light. On the upper level terrace louvres allow light and shade to be managed as well as offering privacy from neighboring properties. The home also features a custom cellar, an undercroft garage and a basement level games room.

43

One Home, Two Happy Clients

Starting out as a Zorzi display home back in 2002, this Mosman Park residence was then home for a family for more than 12 years. When it was bought by new owners, they turned to Zorzi to undertake major alterations and additions to modernise the home and to change it to better suit their lifestyle.

Within a short period of time the back section of the home was completely gutted and extended, allowing for the

creation of a new luxurious kitchen with rich timber detailing and marble splashback and benchtops. A new scullery was built with more storage space than some entire homes and the previously enclosed alfresco was replaced with a fabulous outdoor entertaining space that incorporates a pizza oven, bar and built in fire pit.

This project resulted not just in a beautiful home but a second very satisfied Zorzi client.

44

“Our relatively long design brief to Zorzi was very well interpreted, we got what we asked for and despite the tight timing their Architect expanded on our ideas to create an end product that exceeded our expectations. We couldn’t be happier with our new home!”

“Fast forward 17 years and we have built three award winning homes with Zorzi. Living mainly overseas we have relied on Zorzi to guide us in the purchase of land and provide designs that have suited our changing styles over the years and generally as our building advocate. We have learnt a lot over the years and based on our friends experiences with other builders we continue to be thankful we chose to work with Zorzi”.

Sydney based artist Felicia Aroney, has built a solid reputation in the Australian art scene with her highly recognisable floral artworks which can be found beautifying the walls of many luxury homes and corporate spaces.

Her cubic abstract collection is drawing significant interest from both collectors and interior designers for their vibrant use of colour and texture - explored however with the same sculptural technique that highlights her true mastery of the palette knife.

Felicias` paintings evoke a sense of history and antiquity mixed with all things Australian. A wonderful synergy of her European heritage and Australian background.

Creating a beautiful interior is like creating a 3D work of art, it requires immense skill to both visually and spatially combine functionality, colour and texture in a way that works in harmony with the structure, intended purpose of the space and the personalities of those who will occupy it. Left to an amateur it can all go horribly wrong, which is why the expertise of someone like Sharon Wiley from Seven Willow Designs is a natural choice for those not born with a natural flair for design.

As the Principal of Seven Willow Designs, Sharon’s career spans over two decades. Her interior design portfolio is extensive and expressive, creative and intelligent, always focusing on the human experience and sense of place for her clients.

DREAM HOMES Creating Ultimate

As a second generation builder, Pirone Builders’ General Manager, Adrian Pirone has been around building his entire life. His father Mario started Pirone Builders back in the 60’s, building homes in Geraldton in Western Australia’s mid-west and a young Adrian would often join his father on-site, and eventually

trained and worked as a carpenter in the business. After relocating to Perth, Pirone Builders soon developed a reputation as one of Perth’s leading luxury home builders, constructing homes of the highest calibre which were recognised for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

58

Despite now also having a thriving commercial division, Adrian still has a hands on approach and is personally involved in each and every Pirone Builders project. It is this meticulous attention to detail and refusal to compromise on quality that has assured of Pirone Builders’ enduring success where other building companies have come and gone.

59

A true custom home is a unique reflection of your personality, your taste and your individual lifestyle. That’s why Pirone Builders work closely with a myriad of leading and award winning architects and building designers - each with their own forte’, ensuring Pirone Builders can deliver exceptional homes of every style from classic French Provincial and Hamptons-look homes right through to ultra-contemporary minimalist and industrial looks.

When it comes to resort-style homes there are few better than Chris Clout. Chris has gained a world-wide reputation and an impressive portfolio of awards for his innovative designs. When two companies at the top of their game join forces the results are usually something quite magical, something extraordinary, Pirone Builders are therefore very pleased to be collaborating with Chris Clout, as his chosen West Australian builder, to deliver his unique style

60

of impressive luxury homes to the West Australian residential building market.

Beginning his career as an apprentice carpenter, Chris designed and built the family home at the remarkable age of only 16. Since then Chris has forged a reputation for designing homes that are simply world-class. Although wow factor is a word frequently associated with his homes, at the centre of every

design is Chris’s core values which are centred around family life, creating highly functional spaces that bring families together, not simply designing a house but a home in the truest sense of the word. With a focus on open-plan design and spacious interiors that merge seamlessly with exterior living spaces the contemporary resort-style designs that Chris is renowned for are perfect for the West Australian lifestyle where we enjoy expansive coastal and river regions and views can be maximised.

61

Pirone Builders’ existing portfolio of luxury homes already includes many stand-out designs and homes with undeniable wow factor, despite this, the collaboration with Chris Clout is for Adrian Pirone an exciting step forward for Pirone Builders in residential construction.

“Of course we always have and always will design and construct custom homes that are completely tailored to our client’s individual lifestyle and taste, that’s never going to change but we believe Chris is one of the best home designers in Australia right now and we are therefore very honoured to be the only home builder in Western Australia working with Chris” says Adrian “We believe that with Chris’ innovative approach to design and the calibre of our craftsmanship, together we can deliver some truly exceptional homes.”

Sababa

There are few homes built that are so architecturally unique that they become iconic landmarks. In Perth, if you stumble across one, chances are it’s by Perth custom builder Weststyle. Weststyle has built a reputation designing and building multi-award winning homes on the leading edge of residential architecture - luxurious and visually unique homes that reflect the company’s innovative approach to custom home design like this City Beach showstopper featured on the cover of our yearbook.

Embracing styles of the Atomic Age, Futurism and American Mid-Century, the ultimate influence was the architectural style of John Lautner (an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright) and in particular his Elrod House, that appears in the James Bond movie “Diamonds are Forever”. The architecture of Harry Seidlers’ MLC Centre in Sydney, is also featured in the ribs that support the cantilevered top floor. The home is a true expression of the family who live there, who have named their home ‘Sababa’ - Israeli slang for “It’s all good”.

67

A grand staircase brings you from street level to the entry of the home evoking a feeling of anticipation as you begin your journey into this incredible home. Walking past raw concrete pillars through a frameless glass pivot door and into the art gallery-esque foyer, your focus is drawn to the central spiral staircase which has an almost mechanical appearance - like a cog in the wheel of this futuristic home and looking up feels as though it may actually continue on, right through the rooftop lightwell and into the heavens.

A feat of engineering, the main open-plan living space on the upper floor is circular in design and of perfectly symmetrical proportions. To ensure of this, precise mathematical planning was required right down to the mm throughout each stage of the construction process - from the foundations to the ceiling that houses 12 equally spaced trough lights adding a futuristic glow to the home at night and the spectacular skylight which contains over half a tonne of glass which needed to be craned in.

68
69
70
71

At the core of this home is concrete, both in crisp clean form and raw and natural. The brutally exposed concrete elements reflect the strong, structural nature of the material. It has then been burnished to create a striking flooring material throughout the home. Complementing the concrete is extensive glazing which brings the outside in and allows the home to assimilate beautifully with its surroundings.

Including garage and alfresco, this standout home incorporates close to 1000 sqm of living space, with 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a powder room. The basement level is dedicated to utilities and entertainment. The entry level middle floor also houses the children’s accommodation and the top floor is the main living space and master retreat.

It’s undeniably clear that this incredible home would have been a challenging build, yet with the skill and experience of the Weststyle team the outstanding result makes it appear effortless – ‘ Sababa’ .

72

Copper & Wood

Situated on a prime riverfront site in stunning South Perth, is another architecturally striking home by Perth’s Weststyle. Externally clad with four tonnes of copper, the contemporary façade features the largest amount of copper ever used in a residential project in the southern hemisphere, making it a standout in the streetscape and adding an organic quality which will tell the story of the home’s evolution as the patina weathers and changes overtime.

74

Contrasting with the angular lines and hard, metal surface of the exterior, the interior is thoughtfully and immaculately detailed with extensive stone and timber finishes throughout which create a refined yet warm and inviting ambience. The exceptional craftsmanship is evident in the precision of extensive timber panelling which has been used throughout the home and in the construction of the central staircase which is a standout feature of the home.

76

A thoughtful and considered layout enabled the 710sqm site to accommodate a four-car garage, seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a large living area at ground floor, a family room, an entertainment room, a steam room, a large roof terrace and a lap pool. Another testament to the skill and the experience of the Weststyle team.

A Passion forSustainable Design

As one of WA’s leading architects for the last 20 years, David Hillam is responsible for some of Western Australia's most beautiful buildings. David’s new pet project, Loam, in Stirling Hwy Claremont is now allowing him to explore his passion for design, quality and sustainability in new ways through a carefully curated collection of furniture and homewares. The focus is on high quality brands that each offer their own unique ‘design story’, are beautifully crafted and highlight the importance of quality and longevity as opposed to the temporary disposable nature of mass produced furniture and homeware offerings.

“I am optimistic that an appreciation for quality and the benefits of excellent design are becoming increasingly relevant in society. There is a move away from cheap, imported, mass produced products to greater awareness and support for local designers and manufacturers. Social media and excellent access to information results in better educated consumers. A rise in personal wellbeing and conscious living is translating to improved home environments,ˮ says David.

“Sustainability is a key element, in that I believe that poor design and low quality products lead to great waste in society. Paying more for quality that lasts, results in less waste, benefiting the environment. In giftware and homewares, we are constantly looking to identify new products that resonate.”

A key component of Loam’s ethos is to support local WA furniture designers such as Jack Flanagan and Nathan Day and to collaborate on custom made, locally produced designs for the store.

“Architects have long seen furniture as an extension of the design process. I was aware that local designers require greater exposure and Loam provides us with an opportunity to explore this. We are currently actively designing lighting and expect to expand into furniture elements forming a part of the Loam offering” says David.

Explore the Loam range online at www.loam.com.au or in store at 280 Stirling Hwy, Claremont.

Inspired by Perfection

If you haven’t as yet taken a look at Domination Homes’ luxurious Applecross display home – The Residence, then we highly recommend you make some time to do so. From the moment you arrive and view the classic lines of the facade with feature stone cladding and polished stainless steel columns it’s clear that this is no ordinary home.

A double-height entry foyer with chandelier and beautifully lit staircase sets the tone of the home – Large format porcelain floor tiles flow from the entry though to the living spaces and a central courtyard which can be accessed from both living and dining area and be fully opened up with glass stacking doors, providing an expansive space and seamless transition to the outside.

French oak timber flooring in a herringbone pattern has been used in other spaces including the glamorous master suite with enviable ensuite and dressing room.

Another highlight of this beautiful home is a custom cellar which rather than being hidden away is a central feature of the living space, cleverly separating kitchen and living spaces.

88

Understated Luxury

Situated in the prestigious riverside suburb of Dalkeith, the brief for this residence was to create a family home, finished with quality materials and finishes that would provide ample space for both living and entertaining, a brief beautifully executed by Domination Homes resulting in a home that has a feeling of understated luxury in a striking, contemporary design.

Landscaped gardens and stunning feature stone walls provide a welcoming entrance to visitors. Walking through the custom-designed cedar entry door you’re immediately hit with an overwhelming sense of space. The expansive openplan living, kitchen and dining area on the lower floor has been made all the more spacious thanks to an upper-level void which allows for dramatic double height glazing and ensures of an abundance of natural light.

90
91

The finishes are sleek, with custom veneer cabinetry complementing porcelain tiles and black granite benchtops in the designer kitchen that includes a scullery to hideaway the mess whilst entertaining. In the open-plan living space, the built in cabinetry that contains a gas fireplace extends all the way to the upper level, providing a striking focal point at the centre of the living space. Dream Home Delivered

There was a period when the owners of this beautiful Dalkeith home thought they would not see its completion. With the original builders in liquidation, the owners were faced with a project in its infancy as well as devastating losses. Thanks however to award winning custom builder Luxus Homes, it now stands as a testament to why experience and reputation are crucial to choosing the builder for your new home.

At the onset, Luxus underwent an in-depth consultation with the owners and conceptualised a number of modifications to the original design that would both mitigate some of their losses and expedite the completion of their home without compromising the luxurious finish and feel the clients desired.

106

The result is a stunning three storey luxury residence which has a French Provincial interior aesthetic that is complemented beautifully by a resort-style alfresco and cabana outdoor area. A hydraulic lift links all three floors of this stylish home which has 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and expansive open-plan spaces, accessed through impressive floor to ceiling cedar stacker doors that flawlessly integrate the interior and exterior elements.

Overall the home has a feeling of classic luxury whilst still being warm and inviting, largely due to an inspired material selection that include Jura Beige limestone and walnut parquetry flooring, Italian and Turkish marble, imported antique brass lighting, solid European oak cabinetry, western red cedar lining and stunning freeform stone cladding.

This beautifully crafted home by Luxus, demonstrates that above all, professionalism and vision are the key to delivering the clients dream.

QAwith and OLIVIA

PORTEOUS

With a career in real estate that spans 22 years, Olivia Porteous has sold real estate all over the globe. At one stage a competitor, Olivia now works alongside her father William as a Director of W Porteous, Perth’s leading agency in prestige property. Olivia’s passion for real estate is clearly evident in her results. She is regularly featured amongst Australia’s top selling agents, a great achievement for anyone - an outstanding accomplishment however for this super-agent, who also juggles the demands of a hectic family life as a mother of four!

You started your real estate career selling villas in Portugal, many years on you clearly still have a passion for real estate, would you say it’s in your genes? Although it certainly seems genetic, I would say certain personality types are more suited to sales than others. Real Estate was never my aspiration however I fell into it in Portugal having spent a few years travelling the world being a free spirit. Once I made my first sale I was hooked!

You have a demanding career AND four children, what drives you? I have extremely high expectations of myself in whatever I do and have high energy levels. I thrive on being busy. I am driven by doing something I love. I love all things real estate and closing deals. Every deal is different.

What gets you going in the morning? Every day starts at 5am - it’s literally the only time I have to myself before the phone starts ringing! I take the early morning to run with girlfriends, dip in the ocean and get my coffee. We do this 12 months a year come rain, hail or shine or in some cases even in extreme weather warnings!!!! This morning routine is imperative to me having a clear head ready for whatever the day brings.

What book do you think every person on earth should read? That is such a good question, I am an avid reader and much prefer a good book to TV which I rarely watch. At the moment I am into thrillers which means I am always longing to get into bed at the end of the day to see what happens next! Having said that, I highly recommend all of Paulo Coelho

books. He is a Brazilian author who writes books based on his own experiences but touches on spirituality. My sister-in-law gave me her collection and I find myself highlighting passages which resonate with my own experiences.

You have a passion for interiors - is there anything you’ve bought that you love but others don’t like or understand? I am actually very conservative with my interiors. Less is more for me. I am totally obsessed with art at the moment though and bought a David Boyd painting over the phone at auction recently whilst spoon feeding my youngest child. My husband has got used to seeing new paintings pop up in the house - I never tell him I have bought it until it is up on the wall - by which time it is too late!

One of your other passions is building, do you think that has contributed to your success in the industry? Absolutely my husband and I develop and build. I am fortunate enough that my husband has a design background and has a building company. He has an amazing eye for design and I am very specific about what I like. We are all about simplicity but extremely high quality finishes choosing just a few materials and sticking with them. Our favourite combination at the moment is travertine alongside oak and copper. I look very much at building with a design that will not date and will still appeal in 20 years. Too cutting edge can mean you limit your resale market.

Do you see yourself selling real estate in 10 years time? I’ve been selling for the last 22 years so can’t see anything changing in the next 22 years. I love my work and the people I meet. It energises me. It is fantastic to be invited into people’s homes and lives and an absolute privilege to help my clients with what is usually their primary asset.

If you weren’t selling real estate what would you be doing? I’d probably be a headmistress because I am a bit bossy, very organised and just have that look about me, my mother always says I was born to be a headmistress!!!! Aside from making her take me to display homes from a very young age I always liked playing schools.

ANYA BROCK

118

Listless

Celebrated Australian artist Anya Brock is renowned for her vibrant use of colour, transforming dull interiors into joyful spaces and ordinary exterior walls into large scale, traffic stopping works of art. Her eye-catching large-scale murals are easily identified, spattered throughout her home town of Perth, to as far as Los Angeles and Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

Anya’s creative approach is fluid and organic, preferring at the onset to not know how the piece will turn out, rather choosing a starting point and switching off to an extent , allowing her intuition take over with the creative process, checking in only occasionally with her ‘design mind ‘ to ensure that the piece is working. It’s a method that obviously serves her well with a career that is going from strength to strength and an impressive body of work behind her from colourful abstract animals to nudes, reefs, boats and roses.

Her most recent series explores the contrasting brutality and beauty of the Protea – a robust yet feminine flower that can endure the most arid and hostile environments. With a sophisticated palette of muted tones, this work pays more attention to suggestive line work and abstract mark making.

Like most of Anya’s work the Protea series is available in original works as well as limited edition prints and canvases.

WA’S MOST AWARDED BUILDER

134

There’s a reason boutique custom builders A. Di Bucci & Son have a reputation as WA’s most awarded builder. Over the past 25 years they’ve accumulated an astounding number of building industry awards – in fact well over 50 of them. These are also not your average everyday awards, in fact A. Di Bucci & Son’s accolades include some of the most highly sought after in the industry and include the Master Builder Association of WA’s Top Home Award an impressive eight times, a record unsurpassed by any other builder. Their expertise has also been recognised on a national level with the MBA National Home of the Year twice -most recently winning both of these prestigious awards in 2018 for this spectacular contemporary home in Coolbinia.

2018 – Coolbinia - WA Top Home, National Home of the Year

The award winning team behind A. Di Bucci & Son, are Amico (Mick) Di Bucci and son Greg. A Di Bucci & Son’s building history dates back to 1960 when Amico “Mick” Di Bucci embarked on a building career, after moving to Australia from Italy.” In those days they used to be Jacks of all Trades, Greg recalls. He worked as a tiler, concrete, anything, really,” Greg recalls.

After many years Mick went on to form his own company and in 1978 when Greg joined the family business A. Di Bucci & Son was born. The duo now have over 80 years of building experience between them in a business that is driven by their passion for excellence, intentionally choosing not to grow but rather remain small to ensure they can maintain the impeccable quality standard that they have become renowned for.

2001 – Mandurah – WA Top Home
136
2003 – City Beach –WA Top Home

“What we offer is quality,” says Greg. “When you get a house built by us, you get a home that is without flaws. You get a home that will be finished immaculately, everything will be put together right, and there will be no stone left unturned to make sure that it’s the best it can be.”

Taking true personal pride in every project they undertake, each year they work on only a handful of projects to enable their personal involvement and commitment to both construction excellence and to building strong client relationships.

2005 – Ascot Waters - WA Top Home
137

“We’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Greg explains, “Clients can ring us weekends, nights – it doesn’t make any difference to us, our phones are on all the time. They know that if they wake up after dreaming of something, they can pick up the phone and give us a call and that’s okay. It’s our business, it’s our life, and it’s what we do.

Their willingness to go over and above for their clients, and the outcome, has resulted not only in the vast collection of industry awards they’ve accumulated over the years but in long lasting relationships - with many clients returning several times over the years to A. Di Bucci & Son to build their new home, and a vast amount of their business being generated from direct client referrals.

But it’s not just client relationships that Mick and Greg have been fostering, A. Di Bucci & Son have been working with some of their tradesmen for decades – with some relationships also spanning generations, as subcontractors have passed on their business to their children. Greg acknowledges that the company’s success is largely due to the team of expert tradesman that they’ve built over the years. “We’ve developed a good group of guys who stick with us,” he says. “Our subcontractors are very loyal, and are the best in the industry, this is how we are able to consistently deliver the quality that sets our homes apart from every other builder in Perth.”

FUTURE Building for the

142

More and more people are starting to realise that sustainable living is the way of the future and dream of a life living off the grid. Even big business is starting to plan for a more sustainable future with resource giants such as BHP & Rio Tinto looking at sustainable products and aiming for carbon neutral production.

One small WA family business however has been leading the way in sustainability, building and designing passive solar, sustainable homes now for over 30 years! Based in WA’s South West, Seascape Designs have won multiple awards for their sustainable homes, owner, David Pratt talks about Seascape’s history and future, in passive solar design.

It all started in Victoria back in the 80’s building sustainable homes on coastal and bush properties for owner builders. We camped out on site for months, cutting down trees for timber and digging up mud to help owners build their own mud brick homes and teaching people how to build and live more sustainably. We also learnt from owners who had invented their own off the grid systems with flowing water, wind and solar power. We created rainwater harvesting systems, as well as some of the first attempts at grey water recycling i.e. recycling household waste water into the garden.

Back in the 80’s we used a lot of recycled materials in our homes. In our first home we used Baltic pine lining boards from the old San Remo Post office in our kitchen. We also used old sleepers as post & beams and classic old fashioned timber window frames & doors. We were lucky enough to work on a few historical demolitions and many materials were upcycled into new building sites.

Winner Best Alternative Construction Home $250-$300,000 2020 Photos by: Realimagephotograhy.com.au Dunsborough.

As a result of the recession ‘we had to have’, we made the decision to relocate our young family to WA in the early 90’s and worked on residential and commercial projects from Jurien to Carnarvon. Initially we found construction in the west somewhat frustrating as most construction favoured Hip & valley roof designs & double brick construction which we found to be repetitive and boring, but gradually over time we were able to engage a client base that were keen to explore alternative construction techniques and we have since had the enjoyment of building many homes for our clients using a wide range of building materials and creative designs.

Mix of materials, colours and textures, Kalbarri
144
Swansea House, Geraldton West End

Our ethos is to build and design quality sustainable homes, customized for individual lifestyle and budget. In every home we build, we aim for:

1. Optimal site orientation to ensure natural, comfortable heating and cooling

2. Construction using low embodied natural materials

3. Minimisng waste as well as incorporating energy and water wise principles

4. Ultimate customer satisfaction

We also encourage our clients to source materials that they can recycle back into their new home. This can be an exciting part of the build for the owners to be involved in - an old piece of the Carnarvon jetty turned into a light fitting, or incorporating beams from a 100 year old bridge in Subiaco into the build makes for an interesting talking point for visitors.

Timber & stone, Kalbarri
145
Yallingup pyramid studio

After completing the HIA Greensmart course under the guidance of Griff Morris from Solar dwellings back in 2006 we also set up our own waste management plan for all off our domestic & commercial building sites. We utilise 5 recycle bins on site to minimise site waste by 50-70% on each job.

Recently we have become involved in the Witchcliffe Ecovillage near Margaret River as a preferred builder. We are very excited to be part of this unique housing estate for the future which offers so much including, affordable housing, energy and water self-sufficiency, a low carbon footprint and most importantly work / life balance.

We are passionate about what we do so we will continue to explore methods and materials such as Hemp construction, one of the most sustainable & carbon neutral materials grown in WA, that will advance what we already have learnt over the last few decades to create an even more sustainable future.

Riverside Renovation

With an enviable riverside location overlooking Perth’s stunning Swan River and an existing home with ‘good bones’, the owners of this Mosman Park residence made a decision to renovate and extend rather than rebuild in order to accommodate their young family and bring the home up to the level of style and sophistication they desired. No renovation comes without its challenges for the builder, but with the additional difficulties of working with an elevated site which also backed onto a cliff-face and restricted access which made it extremely difficult to utilise heavy machinery, the sensational outcome of this project is all the more impressive and a true credit to the expertise of builder Adrian Zorzi.

151
152

Maximising the spectacular river views was obviously one of the key objectives of the project. A third storey was added to accommodate the sleeping quarters including a stunning master suite which is separated from the remaining three bedrooms by a family sitting room. Due to the difficult access, low maintenance Equitone cladding was chosen for

the exterior upper level walls. This is fixed on a studwork structure requiring a high level of skill and workmanship to install.

At mid-level a considered floor-plan flows through a series of interconnected rooms from the rear of the home to the expansive terraces overlooking the river - separated only by a striking staircase and a sophisticated bar area concealed behind sleek timber cabinetry.

153
154

For continuity, stone flooring has been used throughout, flowing from interior to exterior spaces and creating an expansive and impressive area for entertaining, further enhanced when the home is opened up to the waterfront terrace.

In the kitchen integrated cabinetry that conceals appliances creates a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic whilst combining with luxurious materials including Pantheon stone to the island bench which was book matched to create a seamless finish.

Over the three levels, the home incorporates 661sqm of luxury living including a double car garage, study, bathroom and cloakroom on the lower level, a powder room, the main open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, a formal sitting room and playroom on the midlevel and four bedrooms on the upper level.

155

To accommodate a children’s play area, the existing swimming pool was removed and a new pool installed with a travertine clad wall and custom made steel water feature. Visible from nearly all spaces, this serves as an important backdrop to the home, expressing the cliff face into which the home is nestled and anchoring the house at this point in contrast to the openness and loftiness that is experienced on the other side.

You COOK Try Before

Let’s face it, all kinds of shopping can be stressful these days. Even for the simplest of purchases, many of us frequently find ourselves staring dumbly at a supermarket shelf, overwhelmed by choice and unable to decide upon the best coffee pods or salad dressing to add to our cart.

When it comes to major purchases, like new appliances for your home, the time investment is usually considerable, online research, consumer reviews and advice from friends and family is usually all part of the process, but with so many brands and models to choose from, it’s sometimes difficult to even know where to start.

Now, changing the way you buy major appliances is new appliance retailer Hart & Co by Rick Hart, a collaboration

with his children, Belinda & Michael Hart and long term associate Nicholas Kirby. Hart & Co’s new state-of-the-art showroom, located at Rick Hart’s original flagship store address in Guthrie Street Osborne Park, offers world-leading brands and aims to redefine the entire appliance purchasing experience, offering you the unique ability to ‘try before you buy’ - yes you can literally bake in an oven, cook on a cook top and wash in a washing machine before you purchase!

For those not sure where to even begin, Hart & Co offer a ‘Signature Appliance Consultation’ where one of the Hart & Co experience team will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, how you use your kitchen and laundry appliances and guide you toward options that may best suit you.

160

With long term customer relationships being as important to Hart & Co as making the right purchase decision is to you, Hart & Co have employed an in-house foodie who runs both pre and post purchase workshops to ensure you know that it is right for you before you buy and help you get the most out of it once you get it home.

The Hart & Co experience also includes a dynamic events program to introduce their premium brands to consumers as well as industry professionals including architects, interior designers and builders.

The Proof is in the Seating

It was in Michigan, in the Spring of 1928 when cousins, Edward Knabusch and Edwin Schoemaker used the timber from orange crates to put together the very first chair with a mechanism that simultaneously pushed the seat forward and tilted back. A later suggestion to upholster the chair turned their creation into the very first La-Z-Boy recliner.

Over 90 years later, the famous La-Z-Boy recliner is still a comfort favourite in homes all over the world and with a multi-generational history, often evokes our memories as children cuddling up with grandparents for story-time on their La-Z-Boys.

To last this long in the very competitive furniture game, they’re clearly doing something right. A commitment to both innovation and quality that includes a genuine Lifetime Warranty on the reclining mechanism of the traditional La-Z-Boy recliner are no

doubt contributing factors. They’re also creating chairs for every new generation, modern, customisable designs that cater to both style trends and the expectations of each new customer group. The static Arna chairs pictured above and the United (1st Class) powered recliner pictured to the right are great examples of this – with the latter having a zero-gravity / lay-flat feature, supreme comfort and even the option of an App that remembers your favourite seating (or lying) positions! But ultimately like the proof of the pudding is in the eating, the proof of the chair is in the seating - La-Z-Boy claims their chairs are so comfortable you really don’t want to get out of them!

So grab a coffee and get down to your local La-Z-Boy showroom, take a seat, relax and find out for yourself.

ART DECO Style

The owners of this new Mt Lawley residence had a 1930’s bungalow-style home in one of Perth’s inner city suburbs. The home featured stunning Art Deco detailing throughout, including art deco ceilings and windows but it was aging and in need of a big overhaul. Owners Peter and Dave decided to look for a new abode with similar features but their search was without luck. Locating a fabulous site in Mt Lawley with a demolition ready home, they decided to build their dream home with all the art deco details they were seeking and the finished home is quite extraordinary, sitting inconspicuously amongst the grand neighbouring homes of original age, so that unless one looked thrice you might never guess it was brand new.

One of the outstanding details of this charming new residence with a yesteryear feel, are the spectacular art deco style leadlight windows that feature throughout the entire home designed and created by Perth’s Tradition Stained Glass. As Perth’s premier glass artisans, TSG have not only restored many authentic period style homes for clients, builders and architects but have also been regularly commissioned to recreate this unique style in many homes of distinction here in Perth. That experience made them very familiar with authentic art-deco style including what types of glasses were traditionally used.

“It is the is the mixture of glass with different clear textures that makes a classic Art Deco leadlight including custom handmade bevelled glass and convex slumped feature inserts” says TSG’s Director and head glass artist, Kim Fitzpatrick.

175

Each beautifully crafted window and door, incorporates the classic geometric patterns of the Art Deco style. Kim, was given free-reign to design each artwork adding a splash of colour to the bedroom and formal living area windows at the client’s request and both client and Kim were thrilled with the outcome. “We are very proud of our contribution to this truly amazing home where many fine tradesmen worked together” says Kim.

“Sometimes, not all the time, we get a chance to shine with what we really do best and are given license to create what we believe will work within the client’s brief. This kind of trust is never taken lightly and in Peter and Dave’s case it really

motivated our team to strive for excellence in both creativity and craftsmanship . All these factors helped us to succeed in creating what we feel are beautiful artworks that add to the overall character of the home.”

THE BROMLEY COLLECTION at the

old Castlemaine Gaol

As an artist you are constantly searching for streams of inspiration, like a miner you hope you won’t just find a piece of prized gold or opal but rather a large deposit, a series of paintings or sculpture that grows and expands on a theme that has many facets. When we purchased the old Castlemaine Gaol two years ago we were, as we are with many things, happy to let it evolve...

181

In days gone by, the gaol sat as a reminder to locals that you do not want to end up in one of the claustrophobic cells, which for most of its existence had windows without glazing, so if the already chilling breeze didn’t cut through you, a gust in the wrong direction could send the rain right into your cell. Some have found the interior of the building somewhat foreboding, as did we when we first entered the space, which is set up like many American prisons. Even more so having read about the gaol’s history - ten people were hung there and then buried standing, facing the wall in the courtyard so that the offender could not tread forward even in the afterlife. Its very being is that of a gaol, obvious to just about anyone that architecturally that’s what it is, but we wanted to play with the story.

Then Yuge had a remarkable idea, which was partly based on Damien Hurst’s ‘Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable’, the wonderfully named and in our eyes remarkably made film and exhibition, presented like a magical fairytale meets gothic Jules Verne journey to the depths of the imagination. The exhibition at Palazzo Grassi in Venice incorporated a myriad of works from dramatic small pieces to gigantic multi-media sculptural works that overwhelmed even the largest of spaces. Using the gaol to house our collection, add to it and allow it to be seen, begged the question - would it have some narrative with the gaol’s history? Well, in our eyes and souls the gaol speaks for itself and so our ideas evolved to allowing what is obvious about it be just that, but throw in many more playful and imaginary takes on scenarios related to a gaol, whilst also doing some things that are just about an iconic building which already captures your attention, sitting at the top of the hill overlooking the town.

182
“ We have endeavored to take the gaol from spooky and a reminder of oppressive confinement to an almost Midsummer Nights Dream meets Edward Scissorhands.”

As is often the case with our ideas, the original thought to go with a lesser amount of large scale pieces ended up with us bringing in truckload after truckload of our collection. This is based in a great passion for art, craft and design and a treasure hunting obsession for anything - Japanese ceramic through to bronze buddhas, modernist sculpture through to old theatre projectors… and so the working title has become The Bromley Collection at the old Castlemaine Gaol.

To present the collection we have endeavoured to take the gaol from spooky and a reminder of oppressive confinement, to an almost ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ meets ‘Edward Scissorhands’. It’s an eccentric collection with some key pieces ranging from a huge Japanese ceramic collection anchored in some Australian classics, from Shigeo Shiga and Derek Smith, to paintings by Charles Blackman, Dale Frank, and Jenny Watson through to Bernard Buffet. Then there’s sculpture, from old French lead coated cherubs to the pop playfulness of Thailand’s Udon Taipenich.

There are a substantial amount of Bromleys in there too, but as in our home, they are paired with many diverse things which help to perhaps show that our collecting is as much of passion as making art is. I’m not sure how many know of, or saw, Andy Warhol’s own personal collection, sold through Sothebys - with a 3 volume set of catalogues? Or David Bowie’s more recent collection sold through Sothebys (?), which I must say would be feigning false humility if I didn’t let it be known I was proudly in that Bowie collection. Their collecting, especially Warhol’s, is somewhat of an inspiration to us, as it also is with other people we know whose obsession with collecting has taken on a life of its own.

183

THE MUGSHOT SERIES

Inspired of course by the gaol, but also Warhol ‘s ‘America’s Most Wanted’ series and the fact that in recent years many old mugshots have become collector’s items in themselves, seen as artful portraits in their own right reflecting immense character in a gaze, this new series includes mugshots of celebrities from Jim Morrison to Frank Sinatra. A Steve McQueen mugshot forms the basis for a cell room, part fiction and part reality, there’s even an old classic motorcycle and small paintings that includes one of his wife Ali McGraw.

184

Many will ask why I haven’t just stuck with the history of this particular gaol but rather portrayed a broader narrative that includes caricatures of Jack Nicholson in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ - the building did hold people considered to be mentally unwell right through to young offenders, as the gaol was also a boys home for a while. I have also thrown in caricatures from Mad Magazine depicting Easy Rider through to Papillon and mugshots of people whose crimes were very small but their punishment was harsh.

As part of the collection, I have found the mugshots to be a strong inspiration for making art, looking relevant and forming part of the narrative of the building. I also found researching the characters in the mugshots utterly fascinating. For the celebrities, the mugshots on the whole seem to be almost worn like a badge of honour. Other, (for want of a better word) nobodies, forgotten and cast aside from society, may have a face that intrigues or doesn’t at first glance make you think the person is capable of the crimes

committed. I have found the stories intriguing to say the least and the subjects powerful to paint and yet feeling at times a sense of deep anguish for what trouble they caused and the severe price they paid.

We are however not resting on these narratives alone, also feeling that the building has a power to it, despite its harsh history and hope to give it other dimensions. We’re nearly there and hope that we may open early in 2021 - no different to an exhibition in clinical white gyprock walls, these walls just happen to have seen some very sad and violent parts to them.

We have grown, despite this, to really love this building with a passion and we hope where there was once deprivation and solitude to bring art and unique things to it, offering it a new beginning and new ways of being used and perceived.

We look forward to seeing you there soon!

Lighting is

EVERYTHING

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of home design - or any building design for that matter and yet, it is often not given close to as much consideration as it should. Lighting can literally make or break a space. It has the power to transform a cold and dull room into a warm and inviting one. It can set the tone of the room with a dramatic contemporary light fixture, classic chandelier, or LED strip lighting. It can make an ordinary outdoor entertaining area look like a resort hotel.

RiverfrontLUXURY

Situated in what is arguably Perth’s most prestigious street, offering expansive views of the beautiful Swan River, this spectacular resort style home epitomises modern luxury living. Designed by George Milankov and expertly constructed by JAV Developments, the home is highly specified throughout and finished in a refined selection of luxurious materials, incorporating nearly 2000sqm of living space over three levels with a focus on maximising the outstanding views.

Surrounded by some of Perth’s most prestigious homes, this residence is an absolute standout and not simply for its sheer size. The quality of construction and unique finishes such as custom designed fencing and gates by Unique Balustrading and feature stone cladding that flawlessly integrates with the darker render of the facade, makes it clear that this is no ordinary home. At night the home becomes even more glorious thanks to lighting installed along the fenceline and recessed in the stone-clad pillars.

A circular drive and covered portico leads guests to the entry of the home that could be likened to that of a luxury boutique hotel. The wow factor continues as you enter into a grand entry foyer with double height ceiling, created via an upper level void and set your eyes on a spectacular crystal chandelier that hangs dramatically down an entire level above the spiralling staircase. An absolute showstopper piece, weighing in at over 300kgs, it was necessary to tie it in at roof level to support its weight.

An inspired material selection including extensive use of marble and stone including polished stone flooring throughout the lower level is softened by the warmth of feature timber including beautiful American oak timber flooring on the upper floor and staircase balustrading as well as timber veneer panelling.

Marina Modern

Overlooking the marina in Mindarie, this stylish, contemporary home by award winning Mondo Exclusive Homes offers a whole lot of home on a narrow compact building site of 336sqm. With a lovely waterside position a key part of the brief was obviously to take full advantage of the available views. Incorporating large terrace areas and an open-plan design Mondo have created a home that allows the owners to enjoy the coastal ambience whilst still maintaining privacy from neighbouring homes.

Two tone render adds to the striking angular lines of the front façade, softened by a central timber framed doorway and warm timber lining on the eaves. Accessed via a gate and stairs at street level, the raised entry of the home has been finished in polished concrete with exposed aggregate which immediately sets the modern minimalist (with a touch of industrial) style of the home. A number of sliding glass doors provide easy access to the terrace area whilst also letting in loads of natural light and the views.

203

At the centre of the lower floor open-plan living space is the designer kitchen. Sleek black and timber veneer cabinetry contrasts with white marble tiles and an engineered stone benchtop to create a stylish and sophisticated space to cook and entertain guests without missing out on the conversation.

204

A lap pool surrounded by decking and adjoined by a covered alfresco area are positioned at the side of the home allow for private outdoor entertaining and midnight swims whilst still enjoying the seabreeze.

Separated from the three children’s bedrooms on the lower level, the upper floor parent’s retreat, is a self- contained little hideaway complete with its own kitchenette, lounger area and generous terrace with magnificent views.

Multi -layered Luxury

For over three decades, designers at Tim Davies Landscaping (TDL) have been creating gardens tailored to modern life. Each design is a miniature symbolic landscape that affects the entire quality of a home. Taking in the unique needs of the people inhabiting them and their architecture, and tempered by a rich horticultural knowledge and exceptional design sense, TDL has designed, built, and maintained some of the most beautiful gardens in the state.

Nestled throughout this modern tri-level residence overlooking Mosman Bay are a series of unique garden spaces by a multi-award winning, landscape design company TDL, each one offering its own unique comforts and surprises whilst beautifully complementing the designer abode with a landscape of equal layering, complexity and luxury.

221

Built on a steep sloping site, the property has two entrances and is somewhat of a labyrinth. On the lower level which contains the garage, TDL have planted a sea of Star Jasmine adding texture and fragrance and Juniperus Conferta to create a soft, elegant ground cover. Foliage from the ground level trees brushes up against the terrace above adding greenery and softening the edges of the balcony, enhancing the view.

With the entry door uniquely positioned at the rear of the home, visitors are lead down a gorgeous laneway of lush greenery that evokes feelings of a hidden pathway to a secret garden.

222

An array of varying textures and tones contrast against the clean architectural lines and smooth finishes of the contemporary home, whilst trees and hedging aid in softening the building’s towering boundary walls, creating a sense of privacy and seclusion. Additional features include a richly planted herb garden and a variety of citrus trees which serve to ground this otherworldly garden.

Reduce pain, lose weight, and sleep better

These are just some of the many health benefits of using an infrared sauna but with our busy lives we often struggle to find the time to make health our priority. iHealth Sauna’s extensive range of saunas enable you to optimise you and your family’s health and well-being from the comfort of your own home.

230

What is an infrared sauna?

Unlike traditional saunas that generate heat by pouring water over hot rocks, Infrared saunas use infrared light to safely increase your body temperature directly, creating an increase in cardiovascular activity, increasing circulation, and helping to release toxins and heavy metals from your body.

Mind & body benefits

Pain Relief – Multiple studies have shown that the use of infrared saunas can reduce pain due to a decrease in inflammatory markers in the body during and after a session, they can also assist with reducing the ongoing symptoms of chronic inflammation such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, with patients reporting less pain and stiffness as a result of regular use.

Detoxification – Your body often naturally develops a fever when unwell, this is because our immune system functions 86 x times faster when the core body temperature is raised just 1 degree. The effects of using an infrared sauna are similar, the increase in temperature promotes white cell production, decreasing the toxic burden on the body, resulting in an increase in energy and overall feeling of well-being.

Weight Loss – During a sauna session your heart rate can reach up to 150bpm, resulting in a cardiovascular workout and burning of calories. Use your iHealth Sauna daily and watch the transformation.

Muscle Fatigue – Infrared Sauna increases circulation whilst relaxing after a workout, helping to clear out lactic acid and bringing vital nutrients and enzymes to repair muscles and increase recovery time. High-level NFL and Crossfit athletes are now using infrared saunas as part of their workout recovery protocols.

231

Skin Rejuvenation – Whilst using your sauna, the infrared light penetrates through the layers of your skin, boosting cellular activity, and delivering more nutrients to your skin, which can result in healthier, youngerlooking skin. Sweating also pulls hydration through your skin which leaves your skin feeling supple.

Sleep Better – Not dissimilar to taking a warm bath before bed, infrared sauna activates the parasympathetic nervous system, leaving us feeling calm. This assists us to not only fall asleep easier but increases REM sleep, resulting in a better night’s sleep and feeling rested the next day.

With a model to suit everyone, from a City Compact 1-person sauna to 4 Person Premium sauna, and models which can be placed indoors and outdoors. iHealth Saunas has the perfect infrared sauna for your home wellness routine.

IN THIS NORTH FREMANTLE GARDEN Old Meets New

Despite working with a narrow corner block and an existing heritage listed retaining wall and surrounding heritage buildings, Springgreen Landscapes delivered not only a garden that exceeded the client’s expectations but also won Gold at the AILDM Design Awards for this North Fremantle project.

The home of an architect, the brief was multi-faceted; to create a garden that would unify the site’s heritage elements with the contemporary home, create an inviting outdoor space to meet with clients and also a design that was visually appealing when looking down upon the space from above.

236
237

Abyss split stone which was used on the ground floor of the building was chosen for the courtyard area too, creating continuity between interior and exterior living spaces. It’s subtle grey tone blends beautifully with the natural limestone and the palette of the carefully chosen plantings.

Adding both character and some privacy to the front courtyard area, two limestone walls were built to reflect the character and heritage of both the existing retaining walls and the surrounding area.
