The towns of Milton, Kentucky, and Madison, Indiana, face each other across the Ohio River, fifty miles northeast of Louisville. Kentucky was a slave state. Indiana was not. Communities segregated themselves into white and black. Swimming or boating across the river’s murky brown water resulted in freedom only once touching Indiana’s shore. In winter, when the water froze, people tiptoed across ice. Large trees and dense brush still cover the land. Fugitive slaves read maps in the stars, talked in code, and followed night voices singing into Madison’s safe houses, as they escaped northward. On Christmas Day in the early 1870s, Mattie Cosby was born on the Indiana side of the Ohio River. Her future husband, James Allen, was born in Kentucky. Government records mark their
