Currituck Outer Banks
A wedding ceremony is one of the most beautiful and important celebrations of our lives. It is a ceremony that deserves a memorable setting, and the Currituck Outer Banks offers the perfect surroundings for any style of wedding the bride and groom may have in mind. Whether the couple is seeking a traditional church wedding, a sunset or Beach-side wedding, or even a simpler ceremony in a home setting, there is sure to be a perfect match on the Currituck Outer Banks. The interdenominational Corolla Chapel has been a part of Outer Banks life since its founding in 1885. Still retaining much of its original look and feel, the church recalls a simpler time, and the parsonage is able to handle larger wedding parties.
One of the most spectacular settings on the Outer Banks is the timeless roaring 20s era Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece known as Whalehead in Historic Corolla. This storied house museum is located in the heart of Historic Corolla on 39 acres within Historic Corolla Park. Whalehead features beautifully manicured lawns, a historic wooden footbridge and a gazebo overlooking the Currituck Sound. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse also makes for a stunning backdrop, and, like Whalehead, features breathtaking views and an awe inspiring natural setting. On the Currituck Mainland, ocean views give way to glorious wide-open expanses, southern hospitality and rustic charm. The CCRC (Currituck County Rural Center) offers all this and more, as do several mainland golf clubs and vineyards located on or around the majestic Currituck Sound.
Outer Banks Wedding Association
The Outer Banks Wedding Association Weekend Expo is held each year in January and features a variety of activities including: • The Wedding Tour, a self-guided tour of many of the reception and ceremony sites available on the Outer Banks. • A welcome reception and fashion show for brides and other attendees. • Exhibits of over 200 Outer Banks wedding vendors available to help you plan your dream wedding. For more information on The Outer Banks Wedding Association Expo, please visit www.obxwa.com.
Planning Your Big Day Spectacular sunsets, pristine beaches, and majestic historical attractions provide unforgettable backdrops for a magical wedding ceremony. Before selecting the ideal location and vendors for your nuptials, consider the following when planning your wedding: The Pre-Plan Schedule a pre-wedding trip to the Currituck Outer Banks to visit ceremony and reception sites. Reserve your chosen location as early as possible; many venues book up fast. Meet with local wedding vendors; these “experts” can help you navigate the wedding planning process. If you plan to hold your wedding outdoors, have an alternate plan ready. Set The Date Send “Save the Date” notices far in advance of your wedding. This will give your guests and family members time to make travel and lodging arrangements.

Furry family members at weddings are more popular than ever with dogs and even cats playing roles as ring bearers, flower “girls,” and welcome hosts. With a little preparation, you can plan a wedding on the Currituck Outer Banks that is fun for your family, friends, and pets. In Currituck County, dogs are welcome on the beach as long as they are leashed. Cats are not subject to this requirement, but must be in the control of their owner at all times.
Details, Details... Good to Know I want to get married on the beach. Do I need to obtain a permit from the county offices? There is no written permit required for weddings held on public beaches in Currituck County; however, if you will have 100 or more guests in attendance, a mass gathering permit may be required. Are tents and other structures allowed at beach weddings? Yes, however, structures on the beach (tents, chairs, altars, tables, flower containers, ropes, etc.) MUST NOT block beach patrol lifeguards, emergency responders, or the public vehicular lanes. Structures and other items are required to be removed from the site immediately following the event. Tents measuring over 200 square feet may be required to be inspected by the Currituck County Fire Marshal. Permits can be obtained at the Currituck County Inspections Dept., 153 Courthouse Rd., Currituck: 252.232.3378 or 1223 Ocean Trail, Corolla: 252-453-8555. Is parking available for my guests? For weddings held in the four-wheel-drive area, vehicles must not be parked as to inhibit the flow of traffic. The shoreline and the dune line are designated Fire, Emergency and Vehicular traffic lanes; parking in these areas is prohibited. Guests must park within designated parking areas. Carpooling or private shuttle is recommended. For weddings held at vacation rental homes, only the allowable number of vehicles may park in the driveways. Are there other regulations I need to know? Amplified music and public address systems must not violate the county’s noise ordinance. Affixing signage or ribbons to public buildings, property, signs, poles or plants is prohibited. All trash must be placed in trash containers. If the site does not have containers, or if trash volume exceeds container capacity, trash must be bagged and removed from the site. Guests should exercise care to avoid disturbing wildlife and vegetation. People are not permitted in undisturbed dune areas. Also note: there is an ordinance prohibiting people from getting closer than 50 feet to the wild horses. Fireworks and open burning (including bonfires) are not allowed along the beaches.
