LOCAL > OUTDOORS
Welcome to Greenville! This is a fantastic place to live if you enjoy the great outdoors, thanks to our beautiful weather and opportunities to be active. Here, we’ll take a quick look at several different ways to be active around Greenville.
HIKING From easy to strenuous, the surrounding area offers great local hikes, each with “beautiful, breathtaking scenery.” You can, for example, walk just thirty feet from your car to take in stunning sunrises and sunsets at Bald Rock Heritage Preserve. For a steep hike that works up a real sweat, consider Rainbow Falls Trail. The reward will be closeup views of a “gorgeous, 100-foot waterfall plunging over a granite cliff.” If you love to walk, surrounded by gorgeous scenery, you won’t run out of opportunities in Greenville! CYCLING If cycling is your thing, there are plenty of amazing biking routes to enjoy.
LOCAL TIP Sunrift Adventures: I love adventure. I was so glad to find Sunrift Adventures in downtown Travelers Rest just 15 minutes out of Greenville. Here you can find great outdoor gear and a staff with a wealth of local intel about the best places to enjoy the outdoors in the upstate. - Joe S.

On such trail, Gateway Park in Travelers Rest, is designed for mountain bikers to gain the skills necessary to ride other trail systems in the upstate area. Plus, in 2017, our city completed the first on-street protected bike lane in all of South Carolina. It runs along Broad Street, between Main Street and Spring Street. There’s also the 20mile walking and biking trail known as the Swamp Rabbit Trail. PADDLING Paddling is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the crystal clear lakes and rivers of the Upcountry. Paddling options are limitless as there are numerous destinations for every skill level, while nearby whitewaters challenge the most advanced paddlers. Now, as a resident, you can enjoy paddling and kayaking close to home. EVEN MORE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN GREENVILLE Busy as those activities can keep you, that’s still only skimming the surface. If you enjoy swimming, there are wonderful places to take entire families, including Discovery Island Waterpark and the 7th Inning Splash Waterpark. Plus, there’s golf, tennis, ice skating, zip lining and much more—and, if you’re a baseball fan, check out Greenville Drive baseball, the highly competitive Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in a ballpark resembling historic Fenway Park. LOCAL > ARTS
For a city its size, Greenville has an outstanding array of cultural amenities that provide a wonderful quality of life for residents and a major attraction for visitors and tourists: A world-class performing arts center, four thriving theaters, a choral group that is 59 years old, an amazing symphony, a museum that houses two of the largest collections of Jasper Johns and Andrew Wyeth in the world, a nationally ranked spring arts festival, two dance companies, an upstate history museum and a children’s museum, to name just a few. Because of these organizations and many others, Greenville is the envy of cities with much larger populations. There are artist studios and arts groups in virtually every neighborhood throughout the greater Greenville area.
Just in the last few years, there has been an influx of artists to the area because of the many opportunities that are available in Greenville. Founded in 2015, the Greenville Center for Creative Arts in the village of West Greenville provides art classes to the public as well and studio and exhibition space for local artists. Events like First Fridays and Greenville Open Studios provide a fantastic awareness of the talent and professionalism of resident visual artists. Since 1973, the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) of Greenville has provided funding and other vital services to individual artists, arts organizations and arts education programs throughout Greenville County. In its 46-year history, MAC has played a major role in the expansion and diversification of Greenville’s outstanding cultural community.
LOCAL TIP Peace Center: We love the talent that visits the Peace Center! The facility is always well kept, and there are attendants placed strategically to help guide you to your seat. - Leo N.

Larkin’s on the River Restaurant - a wonderful steakhouse operating in a historical building downtown on the river. The building was originally part of a stagecoach factory, manufacturing stagecoaches, and then wagons for the civil war. The structure is aesthetically pleasing, historically relevant and restored with many of the original bricks (made from the clay of the Reedy River) still visible in the structure. It has been lovingly restored, and features some of the best views, food, and ambiance in Greenville. The Lazy Goat, a Mediterranean-themed menu features many small plates, and dishes that can be shared by the table. It is situated with an elevation above the river with a wonderful view of the Wyche Pavilion, Peace Center, and Peace Center stage as well as the Reedy River and surrounding area. The menu contains personal pizzas, many middle east flavored dishes and delightful cocktails. The terrace overlooking the river and Peace Center is a delightful way to enjoy dinner on a weekend evening and watching the events and festivities taking place across the river as well as people watching on the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
LOCAL TIP Sidewall: The best pizza anywhere. Great service, unique options and toppings. The only negative is that it’s so good it’s frequently crowded, but great food and service will do that! Always worth the wait! - Scott M.

LOCAL > CYCLING 21-mile paved bike path starting in the heart of downtown. In addition to, Greenville has completely revitalized its downtown area and turned it into a major attraction full of art, gorgeous scenery, and an impressive culinary scene; a deliberate effort to actively pursue cyclists as tourists and potential citizens.
By Kurt Van Natta, resident
Greenville, South Carolina is a growing cycling destination. And word is beginning to spread concerning its strong cycling culture, as the city itself is addressing numerous cycling related issues - the development of an integrated network of bicycle facilities and supporting programs, linking neighborhoods and activity centers throughout the city. The network will

not only make bicycling a more viable mode of transportation, but will contribute to an enhanced quality of life for residents and visitors. Greenville is not exactly new to the cycling scene – it held the USA Cycling Professional Road National Championships from 2006 to 2012. What those riders all know is that Greenville offers miles of wide open space to explore, with everything from serious mountains to rolling farmland, and even a
It takes so much more than just open roads to make a great road cycling area. Road conditions, traffic and terrain are key of course, but so is a general acceptance that bikes belong on the road, and Greenville seems well-placed on all of the above. according to tourism spokeswoman Taryn Scher. “By November 2015, the total number of bike lanes, sharrows, greenways, and trails had grown to 60 miles and is still moving swiftly.” While more definitely needs to be done, those improvements have made getting in and around the city much more bike-friendly to be sure.

LOCAL > CYCLING just east of Asheville, where the riding lives up to its reputation, with hundreds of miles of trails spread out across over 500,000 acres. There are too many to list, but be aware – these trails are very hilly, and are renowned for their challenge and ability to take riders far into the wilderness. Pisgah is also the home of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern United States at 6683’.
> CONTINUED Once out of town, the roads and scenery open up and long, winding, rolling roads abound, with little traffic. North of town seems to be the more popular area, especially since the Swamp Rabbit Trail heads that direction out of town. The trail itself is a very flat rail-to-trail paved path, and it makes for a wonderful, casual spin out of town where you’ll share the trail with everything from pros to first timers, not to mention loads of runners and walkers. You’ll find that many of they cyclists are on their way to the little town of Traveler’s Rest, which has become a popular ride for Greenville locals – they ride out, eat some good food and/or drink some local beer and fresh coffee, and head back home.
When it comes to mountain biking, Greenville often takes a backseat to another outdoor adventure town, Ashville, NC, which is about an hour north over the hills. But Greenville has plenty of outstanding riding within a short drive, and many of the best areas are only a bit farther away than they are from Asheville. Three National Forests are less than 2 hours away, including Pisgah, Sumter and Chattahoochee (in NC, SC and Georgia respectively), and lots of other open space surrounds the area as well.
Another popular ride is much closer to home. Paris Mountain was featured prominently – and painfully – during the National Championships where it was climbed four times during the race. It is found just a few miles north of town, and offers a legitimate mountain climb.
Probably the best known area in the region is Pisgah National Forest,

With the recent revitalization of Greenville – especially the historic downtown area – the town has developed a surprisingly vibrant arts and entertainment scene, including a few things cyclists tend to appreciate: fresh, local, creative food; fresh roasted artisan coffee; and top-notch, micro-brewed beer from both local and national brewers. Choosing to stay active and true to the Two Wheel Fun theme of the article, I decided to check it all out on ... ahem ... a Segway Tour. Greenville Segway Tours provided the machine (and helmet!) and a quick lesson. The owner/guide provided tons of history about the area, including stories behind the seemingly ubiquitous – and quite impressive public artwork, and lots of useful info on entertainment as well. What Greenville has to offer residents and travelers alike is options. It is another great cycling destination that offers plenty of great food and drinks to keep you satiated when you’re not on the bike as well.

LOCAL > SHOPPING
Across the Upstate, there is a healthy mix of familiar brand name shopping, specialty boutiques and local retailers. Another thing you can be sure of when shopping in Greenville? There are plenty of great restaurants nearby should you need to refuel along the way. Explore the listed areas below and discover for yourself how “retail therapy” really works.
10 GAFFNEY OUTLET MARKETPLACE The Gaffney Outlet Marketplace is the closest outlet shopping experience to downtown Greenville and home to more than fifty stores. Brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors and Brooks Brothers are well-represented, as are the likes of Ann Taylor, American Eagle, Guess, Aeropostale, Banana Republic, Gap and J. Crew. While apparel is central to the shopping theme, there is plenty more offered besides clothes, including Bath & Body Works, Yankee Candle, Pottery Barn, Kitchen Collection and Vitamin World. Regular hours are Monday Saturday Open 10:00AM–9:00PM, Sunday Open 1:30PM–7:00PM. 9 CHERRYDALE POINT Nestled between downtown Greenville and Furman University, off of North 2020
Pleasantburg Drive, this shopping center offers a wide range of familiar favorites. Stores include Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Shoe Carnival, Bath & Body Works and Ross. In addition to the department stores, you will find Ingles Market, T-Mobile, AT&T, Gold’s Gym and a Regal Cinemas. 8 FAIRVIEW ROAD The nearby area of Simpsonville has benefitted from Greenville growth, and offers tremendous shopping opportunities as well. Fairview Road is unrecognizable from the scatter of farms and pastures it was but a few decades ago. Department stores such as Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Michael’s are found either in or just outside of Fairview Station. Belk, Kohl’s and TJ Maxx are featured clothing stores. Footwear, video games, pet supplies, sporting goods,
jewelry and beauty products each have a specialty store of their own. 7 AUGUSTA ROAD Extending out of the heart of downtown Greenville, Augusta Road is a common meeting place, and centerpiece of the Upstate community. It’s one of the oldest neighborhoods around, and it gives you quick access to other parts of the city. Restaurants are plentiful, so a day of shopping is easy and comfortable. Take time to pop in and out of the eclectic collection of specialty shops; Twill, a women’s fashion boutique, offers a sophisticated yet casual style, complete with a cozy sitting area and fully stocked bar. 6 GREENVILLE STATE FARMERS MARKET Located off North Pleasantburg Drive is the State Farmers Market. There you will find all sorts of produce such as apples, peanuts and tomatoes year-round, while a separate shed, open on Sat-

Other vendors set up flower stands in the parking lot. 5 VILLAGE OF WEST GREENVILLE DOWNTOWN The Village of West Greenville is a year-round showcase of local, talented artists. Full of studio space and galleries alike, its reputation as Greenville’s art district is rightfully earned. While exploring the Village’s many galleries, take a coffee break at Village Grind or stop in for a bite at GB&D. Ember Outfitters, Pace Jewelers and Rocker Belles each offer a shopping experience unique only to West Greenville. 4 THE SHOPS AT GREENRIDGE This attractive shopping center is anchored by Barnes & Noble and several other superstores. Several free-standing brick buildings at the center of the complex house stores such as Ann Taylor Loft, White House/Black Market, Ulta, Talbot and Yankee Candle. 3 MAGNOLIA PARK Strategically located between three major roads in Greenville; Woodruff Road, I-385 and I-85, The Shops at Greenridge provides a regional destination where shoppers can go for one-stop shopping. Open, outdoors and reasonably walkable, Magnolia Park quickly established itself as one of the key shopping destinations in town. Magnolia Park is home to Cabela’s, Costco, a Regal Cinemas and the only Dave and Buster’s in the area. Pier 1 Imports, Nordstrom Rack and Golf Galaxy line next to one another.
2 DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE In 2002, the Main St. Liberty Bridge over the Reedy River opened up the West End and Falls Park on The Reedy, and business boomed. Anchored by the Hyatt Regency on one end and the West End on the other, downtown is lined with arching trees and pretty street lighting. You’ll find an abundance of unique, local retailers, as well as upscale chains like Brooks Brothers, Orvis and Anthropologie. Not just national chains but smaller ones such as Mast and its next-door neighbor, O.P. Taylor’s Toy Store also find their place along the Main St. 1 HAYWOOD MALL Open from 10:00AM-9:00PM Monday through Saturday, and from noon-7:00PM on Sunday, perhaps Greenville’s most popular shopping destination, the Haywood Mall houses over 150 stores. Sears, JCPenney, Dillard’s, Macy’s and Belk, the mall’s largest stores, and the likes of smaller retailers such as Gap, Sephora, Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Forever 21 and Banana Republic make for a very complete shopping experience. A food court and restaurants like Grill Marks and Cheesecake Factory, are convenient when you’re ready for a bite to eat.
Although you can basically find anything you desire at one of these premier, Upstate shopping centers, there are countless other retail stores, boutiques and specialty shops in the area. Because there are so many options, below is a list of local favorites. SPLASH ON MAIN We are a fun, unique, eclectic, yet high-end boutique located in beautiful downtown Greenville, South Carolina. PARKS State Parks are great family destinations. They feed the minds and souls of children and adults alike. They are beautiful and unique and inexpensive. Parks and recreation facilities are the places that people go to get healthy and stay fit. According to studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, creating, improving and promoting places to be physically active can improve individual and community health and result in a 25 percent increase of residents who exercise at least three times per week. State parks promote the preservation of natural ecosystems. Our efforts to protect state parks today will make our children and future generations proud of how we acted in regards to the natural, environmental, recreational and cultural resources in our care.

FAMILYFRIENDLY AT TRACTIONS/THINGS TO DO
One goal of ours at BeLocal is to guarantee our readers get the most out of every season and spend more time playing with their families. Fortunately for you, Greenville, South Carolina is a great city to raise a family. There are plenty of activities that everyone can enjoy. We believe families attach great importance to play but social factors limit opportunities. Concerns about traffic and strangers appear high on parents’ list of reasons for not allowing their children to play outdoors. Over one-quarter of parents admitted to limiting their children’s play because of concerns about accidents and injuries. One-third of parents say that their children cannot play outdoors due to the lack of play facilities near their house. A similar amount of parents feel that the general public has a negative attitude to children using public places to play. So we’ve compiled a list of accessible, kidfriendly attractions that will provide your children a proper and playful environment while providing you, as a parent, peace of mind and an opportunity to form long-lasting memories with your family.
FUN FACT Downtown Greenville is where Greenville’s first settler, Richard Pearis, established his plantation shortly after 1770, approximately located around East Court Street and Carpenter Brothers Drug Store on South Main Street.
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate TCMU’s downtown Greenville location allows visitors to experience 80,000 square feet and 19 exhibit galleries, with components and programming in the areas of arts, humanities, sciences, health, nutrition, and the environment, suitable to children ages 1-15.

GREENVILLE
TRIUMPH When Greenville entrepreneur Joe Erwin first heard the United Soccer League was looking to bring professional soccer to the Upstate, the image in his head wasn’t a highlight reel goal or a team holding up a championship trophy. It was a grandstand full of fans from all areas, backgrounds, and walks of life in the region. Community was at the heart of Erwin’s desire to help bring a team to Greenville. Two and a half years after those initial whisperings of the league’s interest in Greenville, Erwin and his team have built the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club, the Upstate’s first professional soccer team. Competing in the USL League One, they are only two levels below Major League Soccer (Atlanta United, MLS Charlotte ’21). The club built a roster mixed with players from England, Somalia, and South Korea, as well as local talent like defender Cole Seiler from Anderson, SC. They chose the “Triumph” name as a reflection of the spirit of the region, overcoming the shuttering of the textile industry to become one of the best places to live in the country.

In late 2019, they completed their inaugural season with an improbable run to the USL League One final, falling just short of winning the championship. Along the way, Upstate residents flocked to Legacy Early College in the historic City View neighborhood of West Greenville to cheer the team on. Taking in one of the club’s home matches, less than two miles from Main St., you’ll come across stands filled with young professionals, families, and a vocal group of the club’s supporters, the Reedy River Riot. They lead the stadium in chants throughout the match, and their goal celebrations are not to be missed. Arrive early and you’ll be able to see their march into the stadium, complete with drums, flags and Triumph-colored smoke.
Fast Facts: Inaugural season: 2019 League: USL League One Stadium: Legacy Early College, 900 Woodside Avenue, Greenville Ticket Prices $10+ Phone: 864-203-0565 Website: GreenvilleTriumph.com The team is coached by U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame member and former U.S. Men’s National Team captain John Harkes, one of the members of the 1994 World Cup team that sparked the growth of soccer in America. Harkes and his family were familiar with the area with their eldest daughter playing collegiately at Clemson. In a region full of soccer fields, the club sought out an opportunity to play in a location that would aid their core mission of bettering the community. The 4,000-seat stadium was constructed by the team on Legacy Early College’s existing soccer field as part of a partnership with the charter school that provides students with internships, soccer clinics, and much more. The club bills itself as having the most affordable professional soccer ticket in the country, as fans can get in to the stadium for as little as ten dollars. The Triumph’s season runs from late March to early October, with the majority of the matches taking place on Friday and Saturday nights. They’ve also added two afternoon matches in 2020 to accommodate fans with young children.
