Managing Grant Making
How our Years of Experience can help your Foundation Laurie Heller and Associates works in partnership with philanthropic foundations to assess needs in Israel, help develop effective programs, align organizational strategies and evaluate impact to strengthen your grant making. Laurie Heller (C.S.W.) established Laurie Heller and Associates (LHA) in 1999 after 25 years working as a consultant, grant maker, evaluator, and project manager for nonprofits and foundations in both New York and Israel. The values guiding our work are based on Tikun Olam "Healing the World," mutual respect and transparency backed up by sound fiscal and social work practice.
Knowledge and Experience By bringing her 25 years of professional experience in communal planning and allocations, Laurie and her team will help your foundation reach its funding priorities. Laurie's own experience includes directing the planning and allocation process for 29 Jewish Community Centers while at the UJA Federation of New York, and overseeing allocations of over $250,000,000 and directing the planning and allocations of over $125,000,000 to projects in Israel. Laurie’s strengths lie in agency strategic planning, program development and evaluation, budgeting, group work, community organizing and management consulting.
Supporting Grant Makers for effective Philanthropy LHA is proud to have built relationships with hundreds of nonprofit organizations in Israel. A dedicated partner, we have invested our expertise to develop coalitions of funders to expand the impact of projects. We have helped funders meaningfully engage with their grantees and other key stakeholders. Through our work we have brought together field staff and agency executives on issues as broad as youth services for Russian speaking youth, Jewish renewal projects, Israel Experience programs, and most recently an exploration of the nature, scope and possible solutions for food insecurity in Israel and the challenges facing the Bedouin community.
With you in making effective allocation decisions in Israel At the core of LHA’s relationship with its clients is a shared commitment to maximizing philanthropic dollars and achieving significant impact. We will become your partner who understands the nonprofit sector in Israel. With over 20 years of allocation experience to projects in Israel LHA knows what is achievable. Together we will formulate strategies to support program implementation that meet your mission goals. Knowing what you want to accomplish, where you want to focus your activities is key to the success of your efforts. We are attuned to the needs of the nonprofits in Israel. Our deep knowledge of issues includes immigrant absorption, education, economic development, inter-group relations, leadership development, enhancing a civil society and the Arab sector.
Providing Expertise in Research and Planning LHA identifies and analyzes issues, strategies and then explores relationships with possible institutional partners relevant to your grant making. Knowing that funding decisions need to be based on current data we have developed relationships with the major research institutions in Israel. By working closely with researchers we can assess what information is already known and what new foundation sponsored research might be required. If new research is not needed LHA prepares data review to be presented to the board so that informed decisions can be made.
Managing the Grant Making Process LHA provides your complete grant management infrastructure in Israel, including: Designing and issuing requests for proposals and funding guidelines. Providing applicant outreach and technical assistance. Analyzing proposals, conducting due diligence and recommending awards. We work with the funded projects to ensure that the relationship between the grantee and the grantor is built on trust and respect. Monitoring funded programs. Building collaborative programs with like-minded donors. Evaluation is key to knowing the outcomes of your foundations allocations. We work with your grantees to help them structure their assessment tools to maximize what can be learnt to improve the program. Meaningful board/staff site visits. Networking, a key activity. Well developed cultural competency.
