Dear Friends, There is much to share and anticipate this month so grab a cup of coffee and read on!

0VER 90 SHINE IN THE LIGHTHOUSE Robert gives you all the detail in his Blarney update, but it is worth underlining how there are real signs that The Lighthouse is beginning to capture the imagination as an alternative way to learn and worship, and therefore connect with those we wouldn’t normally see at our usual Sunday morning services. After a slow start it is great to see the perseverance of the team under April Gunn’s leadership, lead us into a new and exciting ministry.

BUSY BUSY – TOO BUSY? The Lighthouse is an example of what Carrigrohane Union does well – reaching out innovatively. Every church in the Union has people of energy and passion and Robert and I are thrilled to minister into this situation, and of course do our fair share of generating ideas! BUT, and note it is a big but, there is a real danger we can lose the run of ourselves, or rather God. We run ahead of His plans and purposes. We wear ourselves out in the doing, instead of loving Him for Himself and enjoying the freedom He wants to integrate into the whole of our lives. Consequently, we lack the fruit of the Spirit in our personal experience. Our mission as a church lacks the expectation of God to touch lives and turn them around for the Kingdom. In the words of Galatians: “After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to finish with human effort? …Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by observing the law, or by believing what you what you heard?” (Galatians 3 v 3 & 5) The law was of course the law of the Jews, but all of us can easily find ourselves living by “laws”, ideas and attitudes that spring from within and the world around us. That is why we are excited to have John Hughes from New Wine come and speak to us at the end of April. For John and New Wine represent a call to join in the eventfulness of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Robert and I ask that, as much as possible, every one of us takes this opportunity to get along to most if not all of the sessions details of which you will find elsewhere in this Newsletter.

Blarney Update Now that the month of April is on the horizon and the clocks have changed, plans are beginning to come together in Blarney for all sorts of things happening both within and beyond the church doors. • The Parish Website continues to be developed • Blarney Church has its own Facebook page – please do “like” us. • We are looking at our summer programme in the church especially tourist friendly info leaflets which will be distributed in May- June. • This the end of this month we are looking forward to welcoming John Hughes - please do come along if you are free on any of the evenings / Saturday Morning. More details elsewhere. • Linking up with primary School’s in the Blarney Area. • Continue to Develop our Lighthouse Ministry – April Gunn reports on March’s Lighthouse : “The Lighthouse Easter celebration - Wow! So much enthusiasm! So many people and lots of happy noise and movement around the place! We have just had our Easter Lighthouse and there were a record 94 people in the church, with lots of new and familiar faces. It has been just such a joy to be able to be a part of Lighthouse and seeing the numbers attending it grow. Some of you are probably thinking, so what is this Lighthouse thing all about. Well Lighthouse is ‘Messy Church’ so as well as having songs, prayers, Bible stories, all of which regularly happen at church services, there are also lots of different activities through which the Bible story may be explored. This month we did such things as put red paint handprints on the shape of a cross to show how Jesus died to forgive our sins, fold and cut a piece of paper to give lots of different shapes which could be used to tell the story of Good Friday and also spell out the word ‘Alive’, make a model of the empty tomb, an Easter card to help us share the ‘Good News’ with others and ice and decorate biscuits to share together at refreshment time, as well as other games and activities. The Lighthouse is aimed at families with children 3-12 years, with a play area for younger children.” Why not come and join us at the next one which takes place on Sunday 14th April at 3.30 – 5pm.

THE OVERFLOW AND NEW WINE Personally New Wine has been a voice calling me to keep drinking from the Spirit and in 2008 at the annual Sligo conference John Hughes gave the daily Bible readings. God got to work that week and combined with the sabbatical I took, the summer of 2008 was a time of complete renewal – in body, mind and spirit. The upshot has been I default to belief instead of doubt and enjoy my ministry more than ever, all of which I thank God for while still of course aware of my failings! Which in itself is a huge part of this deepened experience – that we don’t have to have everything worked out. It is a ministry of grace to let Him work through us for a busyness that springs from the overflow of His power at work in us. With nearly a hundred people from Cork going to the New Wine conference in Sligo last summer, John’s visit is open to everyone from any and every church to consider what it means today to be ‘A Church Open to the Holy Spirit’. As a sign of the unity of the Spirit we are sharing the leading of the worship and seminars with members of Cork Grace Church who use the Church of the Resurrection Blarney twice a month midweek.

HEARING GOD—HEARING EACH OTHER! THE EASTER VESTRY—MORE THAN JUST AN AGM! A Church open to the Holy Spirit means that the work of the Vision and Development Group (VDG) must discern what God wants. As part of that discernment over the next few months the VDG members are going to review the ministries and the life of the Union – it will be an exercise in listening which we will then reflect on through scripture and prayer. So at the Easter Vestry on the 15th April (8pm in the Parish Centre) the focus will be on how the VDG aim to progress this Listening work. Of course with elections taking place, the usual reminder to pray about whether you might serve on the Select Vestry this coming year...as one of the 12 members or as a Church Warden.

BE PART OF A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD During the United Celebration on Sunday 7th April (11am) we will be joined by the Ballincollig Community Forum / Linking Hands Project who are attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the most hand-prints in one place. The aim of the project is to reach out far and wide, home and abroad, get everyone involved, and in the process, pay tribute to the community spirit shown by so many clubs, organisations, schools and groups in the area. They are asking everyone to buy a square for 1 euro, draw the outline of their open hand (they can be decorated and signed,) as a symbol of friendship and togetherness. The squares will be sewn together and made into banners tied together and displayed along the main street in Ballincollig in July. Moneys raised will go to 2 local charities, “Headway” a rehabilitation training centre for adults with acquired brain injury, and the Gunners Special Olympic football team who play and train on our North Field. After the service there will be an opportunity to draw your hand and be part of this Guinness World Record attempt, but more important still. Be part of a great community initiative. Every blessing and prayer, Ian

Thank you !

Cork Indigent Roomkeepers’ Society has been in existence for over 200 years and aims to assist financially those in need in the parishes of the United Diocese of Cork, Cloyne & Ross. Despite the gallant work of our collectors and donors the Society currently runs at a deficit which is eating into its reserves. In an effort to raise extra funds, committee member & Hon Treasurer, Noel Barber, with his wife Gillian, are at their own expense walking the final section of the Camino de Santiago de Compostella (The Way of St James) in Northern Spain in May 2013. There will be sponsorship forms in the churches—and all donations are most welcome. The Parish regularly supports this Society in our annual charity giving at the end of each year. Church Library—Catalogue

Lucia O'Donovan is currently cataloguing all the Christian books that are available to borrow from the Carrigrohane Union and the list will soon be up on the website and available to home groups and individuals to borrow. We would also like to invite you to offer Christian books of your own that you have found useful/interesting. We don't necessarily want you to donate them as storage would become an issue but if you have a book or 2 that you think might be of interest to others and that you would be willing to lend, please forward the book title, author's name and perhaps a comment about the book from your point of view to Lucia: 087 2942285. Thank you.
