Officers President: Patrick Johnson (Oso)

Vice President

Looking back, 2009 was certainly a busy year for the association, we had many terrific rides, elected new officers, took on some new charities, welcomed a lot of new members, received our American Motorcycle Association charter, saw a new and improved website, launched a newsletter, attended the Lone Star Rally, made the annual Texas Honor Ride to San Antonio, and, closed out the year with a wonderful Christmas party, there where many people responsible for all of this and the names are to numerous to mention here, but as we all reflect back let’s take just a moment to think about the membership and the great work they put in, each and every member in some way has contributed so give yourselves a big “OHHRAH! and WELL DONE”.

From the President “Bear Facts

By: Oso

Marines,

As the year comes to a close and the Holiday Season is upon us, it is only natural for us to look back and reflect. This past year for our Association has been an excellent one. Locally, we added twelve members into our fold, while in Iowa we have added three new members. We continue to participate in traditional events to include Memorial Day, Frank Glover Memorial Ride, Lone Star Rally, Texas Honor Ride, and the Marine Corps Birthday celebration in Huntsville, as well as the Toys for Tots Ride in Pasadena. In addition, we returned to having a Christmas Party where we can relax over a good meal and drinks with friends. More importantly our Association has taken the initial steps in broadening our support of Veterans and their causes by aligning ourselves with the Bay Area Builders in addition to continuing our support of the Texas Honor Ride. In addition, this year saw the creation of this newsletter, as well as the continuation of our website. As an Association we became a Chartered Member of the American Motorcycle Association. As we look back on the past, we can only naturally then think of the future. I feel that it will only get better from here. As of this writing, we are in the process of incorporating as a non-profit organization. In addition, the Board of Officers is finalizing the ride calendar for 2010, which will afford all members ample time to mark their calendars for each planned event. In 2010 I foresee Iowa getting their tenth Marine, which will enable them to Charter as their own Company, while we here in Houston will surely continue to grow. As an Association, our growth has been at a steadfast pace with individuals of solid character being added to the fold. We have come a long way since our first meeting in 2006 when fourteen of us gathered and shared our vision as to they type of Association we wanted to belong too. We have had our growing pains along the way, but we continue to move forward in becoming what I truly feel is the premier group of Marines in the motorcycling community. I again charge each of you in taking personal ownership of or Association. Participate in as many activities as you can. Volunteer to assist where needed, and reach out to that Marine that you know who rides motorcycles, but has not yet come out to ride with us. Most importantly, take care of yourself and your families. Happy Holidays to Each of You and Semper Fi! God Bless, Oso

2009 Texas Honor Ride

By: Oso

This years Texas Honor Ride was held on November 7th. We again hooked up at Love’s Truck Stop located just outside of Katy where we then rode into Schulenburg to hook up with Larry and Mari Perry. After a stretch and topping off of tanks, we then rode a very crowded highway to Luling. When we arrived in Luling, something was in the air, and it wasn’t love. A large fire of unknown substance was burning and smoke hung thick and heavy in the air. To say anyone did not get their fair share of carcinogens would be a lie. Needless to say, we didn’t hang around long. After another topping of the tank we then rode to the truck stop just past Luling where everyone who had not yet registered for the event did so. Whereas last year we hung out for a while, this year would not be the same. We were part of the first group to leave the truck stop, doing so around 1030 hours. Although this is a police escorted ride, it seems as though they did not have as many police as they have had in the past. Unfortunately it was gear up, gear down, and burn up the breaks all the way into San Antonio. I honestly don’t know how we did the entire ride from Houston to San Antonio like we did the first time we participated in this event. It seems like the crowd gets smaller and smaller each year, but that did not curtail the enthusiasm for the cause this event supports. This year had a nice change in that a rather large contingency of troops who were receiving treatment at the Brooks Army Medical Center were actually out amongst the crowd. They were asked to go to the front of the stage where they were then recognized. Doug “Daddy’O” McLeod was instrumental in aligning the “Kissing Sailor”, Glenn Edward McDuffie in scheduling an appearance at the event. However, health reasons prevented him from doing so. That did not however stop a signed photograph of the infamous picture from bringing in a large cash donation to the Texas Honor Ride during an auction which was held after lunch had been served. We then made our way to The Menger Hotel. After a short rest we hooked up in the Menger Bar and toasted our Beloved Corps on more than one occasion throughout the night. We were joined by members of the Marines Motorcycle Club for a while in doing so. Members then ventured out for a meal and entertainment on the River Walk and even carriage rides, eventually returning to the hotel’s bar for a nightcap. A number of members met the following morning for a breakfast and then departed the hotel in hopes of beating the rain that was looming overhead. Alas, it was not to be. The rain caught us before we made it out of the city limits. It was then a long, wet ride home from there. Everyone made it home safely at which time they immediately re-evaluated their personal rain gear, ordering new sets if the old ones did not meet muster. Semper Fi, Oso

The Annual Christmas Party

By: Curly

The annual Association Christmas party was held on December 12, 2009, Emma Cullen put together a great party that was hosted at the Sheraton North hotel, the food was plentiful and delicious, the music was provided by Stan “Chi Town” Bilski who has an amazing collection of music from across the decades, a good bit of dancing took place as evidenced by the photo below, a rousing game of “Dirty Santa” was played and everyone left with a gift from the Christmas tree, many of the group remained at the hotel overnight which allowed for a full evening of enjoyment without the risk of travel, all in all I can safely say that it was a time of merriment and pleasure for all who where able to attend. Toys for Tots Ride The annual Marine Toys for Tots Ride was held on December 12, 2009 from League City to the Pasadena Fairgrounds, in spite of the really crummy weather a few of the members where able to attend and represent the association at this very worthy event, the ride itself was pretty wet, but not unsafe and we did have a very good time at the Fairgrounds, as usual they had a ton of vendors, live music, and a lot of displays including an Apache Helicopter, An Amphibious Assault Vehicle, an inflatable slide and obstacle course, a rock wall, petting zoo, photos with Santa Claus, trampoline, a chili cook off, a 4x4 show and shine, and car crush and some riding skills events.

BABA House Warming Ride The Bay Area Builders Association is a charitable organization that builds homes for disabled veterans and donates them to the vet for absolutely no charge including taxes for the first couple of years, thus far all of the homes donated in Houston have been to Marines and as such this association has begun supporting this very worthwhile and needed endeavor, a home was recently donated in League City and a few of the Association members where able to ride there and attend the event, it was a truly moving experience and the family that received the home where not only in need of it but also very deserving, the recipient SSgt Scott Worswick was wounded in was injured on a mission to confront insurgents in, Afghanistan, when his convoy was ambushed and in typical Marine fashion he sustained wounds while caring for his team mates, you can learn more about this worthwhile organization by clicking here to read the latest newsletter from them
